If you’re a makeup lover like we are, then you likely have plenty of eyeliners already stashed in your makeup bag. Chances are, you definitely have a basic black eyeliner, and maybe even a few brighter shades, too. But what about nude eyeliner? You may not have given it a passing glance before, but it turns out that nude eyeliner can be one of the most useful and versatile products in your entire makeup collection. How, you ask? Keep reading to learn about seven nude eyeliner hacks that will change how you feel about this multi-use (yet often overlooked) eye makeup product.
OUR BEST NUDE EYELINER
Before we share our favorite nude eyeliner hacks, let us introduce you to our favorite nude eyeliner pencil: The L’Oréal Paris Infallible Pro-Last Waterproof, Up to 24HR Pencil Eyeliner in Nude. You can follow all of the eyeliner hacks to come using just this one nude eyeliner pencil, which is formulated to glide on easily and evenly. Moreover, thanks to its no-smudge formula, you can rock your nude eyeliner look all day—and you can use it on your waterline. Now that you have your nude eyeliner picked out, it’s time to get to those hacks!
NUDE EYELINER HACK #1: BRIGHTEN THE APPEARANCE OF YOUR EYES
In the same way that you highlight your upper cheekbones to create a brighter appearance, you can also highlight your eyes to help make them appear brighter. To do so, grab your nude eyeliner pencil and apply a thin line along your lower waterline. Go slowly—this technique takes practice because it’s such a delicate area.
NUDE EYELINER HACK #2: WIDEN THE LOOK OF YOUR EYES
Nude eyeliner can also help make your eyes look bigger. To get the slightly stretched look, apply a dab of nude eyeliner to the inner corners of both eyes. For a seamless finish, blend the nude eyeliner out ever so gently using a cotton swab.
NUDE EYELINER HACK #3: MAKE YOUR EYES POP
If your gaze seems sunken or your lids simply aren’t popping as much as you’d like, grab your nude eyeliner—it can seriously help, and we’re going to tell you how. Simply color in the center of your lids to create a bit of dimension. When the center of your lids are lighter than the sides, this gives the illusion of rounder-looking eyes.
NUDE EYELINER HACK #4: SHAPE YOUR BROWS
Bold, properly-shaped eyebrows are trendier than ever, and they’re not going anywhere. One way to help fake the appearance of perfectly shaped brows, or accentuate the shape you’ve already got, is to use a nude eyeliner. To do so, simply trace along the outside of your brows to carve and sculpt them into your ideal shape. The key to this hack is to fully surround your arches with the nude eyeliner and then blend it out with your fingers or a cotton swab to get rid of any obvious lines.
NUDE EYELINER HACK #5: HIGHLIGHT YOUR FACE
By now, you’re probably a pro at highlighting and contouring your face. If not, all you have to do is trace a swipe of bronzer in the shape of the number “3” stretching down from your forehead to your cheekbones and finally your jawbone. Then, follow up your contouring with highlighting above your cheekbones, between your brows, down your nose, and on the center of your chin. While highlighter definitely has a place in your makeup bag, on those days when your clutch is simply too small to fit another compact inside, nude eyeliner can be used in its place. For real, give it a try!
NUDE EYELINER HACK #6: FAKE FULLER-LOOKING LIPS
The best way to fake the appearance of a pillow-y pout is by highlighting your cupid’s bow, which is the small dip above your upper lip. Thankfully, if you’re without highlighter, you don’t have to give up on your dream of having full lips—nude eyeliner can come to your rescue. Draw a little bit of nude eyeliner onto the top of your cupid’s bow, then blend out with your finger.
NUDE EYELINER HACK #7: HIDE IMPERFECTIONS
No color-correcting concealer in sight? No problem! All you have to do is reach for your nude eyeliner. Spot a pesky blemish? Quickly dot on nude eyeliner and blend with your finger to expertly mask the look of any imperfections.
WHAT TO PAIR WITH NUDE EYELINER
Once you’ve finished applying your nude eyeliner like a pro, finish off the rest of your makeup with flawless-looking skin, a bold lip, and a flirty set of lashes. Start by applying a full coverage foundation, like the L’Oréal Paris Infallible Up to 24HR Fresh Wear Foundation, Lightweight, with the L’Oréal Paris Infallible Blend Artist Foundation Blender. For your bold lip, go with a trendy matte finish, swiping on the L’Oréal Paris Infallible Pro-Matte Liquid Lipstick. Finish off with a few coats of the L’Oréal Paris Voluminous Lash Paradise Washable Mascara and you’re good to go.

The minimal makeup style doesn’t leave you bare, but it keeps your look natural. Using color shades that are slightly lighter and slightly darker than your skin tone, a nude makeup style will provide just enough definition to highlight your features.
When done right, this barely-there look is subtle and stylish. But don’t let the subtlety fool you into thinking that it doesn’t take some effort. In the tutorial below, we’ve broken down the steps on how you can achieve the flawless look of nude makeup.
Prime Eyelids: Start by priming your eyelids. This will enhance the eyeshadow colors that you use and it will keep your makeup looking good all day long. Here, we’re using Urban Decay Eye Primer.
Eyeshadow Base: Using an eyeshadow that closely matches your skin color or is slightly lighter, cover your entire eyelid with a base coat to create a clean canvas. Here we’re using a Wet ‘n Wild Blending Brush with the Morphe 350M Nature Glow Matte Eyeshadow Palette.
Define The Eyelid Crease: Using a nude eyeshadow tone, define the crease of your eyelid. Start by applying shadow directly to the crease, and then blend it out and up. Repeat this process until the crease is noticeably defined. We’re using the same brush and eyeshadow palette from the last step.
Lower Eyelid: Using a nude color that’s two or three shades darker, apply eyeshadow on to the lower lid between the lash line and the crease. Blend up into the crease to create a smooth transition. We used the same Morphe 350M Palette, but we switched to a flat eyeshadow brush from Urban Decay like the UD Pro.
Lower Lash Line: Using your flat eyeshadow brush, apply the same color that you used in the previous step along your lower lash line.
Mascara: Define your lashes with a black mascara like the Mary Kay Ultimate Mascara that we’re using here.
False Eyelashes: Apply false lashes to further draw attention to your eyes.
Line Lips: Now switch to your lips and line the edges using a warm nude color such as the Kylie Cosmetics Pencil Lip Liner in Hazel that we’re using here.
Lipstick: Fill in your lips using a similar shade to the liner. We used the Kylie Cosmetics Matte Liquid Lipstick in Hazel.
Lip Gloss: Add some shine to your lips with lip gloss. Here, we’re using the Anastasia Beverly Hills Lip Gloss in the color Gilded.
Doesn’t this nude makeup style look so good? The contrast of the matte finish on your eyes with the high gloss of your lips creates interest and adds dimension to your look. Even though it looks natural, it certainly doesn’t look boring.
It’s a perfect look for daytime. But it also looks good for a night out.

Start by evening out your complexion with a lightweight yet full-coverage CC cream like the Dermablend Continuous Correction CC Cream SPF 50+ . Give your skin a luminous look and your CC cream even more staying power with a dusting of the Giorgio Armani Beauty Luminous Silk Glow Setting Powder on top. To keep the monochromatic look from appearing flat, apply a touch of blush on the apples of the cheeks.
Using an eyeshadow brush, dust a beige-colored shadow, like Laredo from the Urban Decay Naked Wild West Eyeshadow Palette , all over the lids, going from the inner corners to the outer corners and into the crease.
For a low-maintenance, barely there look, use a medium-brown eye pencil like the Maybelline New York Tattoo Studio Eye Pencil in Smooth Walnut to create a thin line of color on the upper lash line. Repeat this on the bottom lashes, but focus on the outer corners and sweep it into the middle of your bottom lash line.
If you’re planning on wearing the look from day to night, use a black liquid liner on your upper lash line instead. Try the L’Oréal Paris Lineur Intense Felt Tip Liquid Eyeliner for a budge-proof finish.
Swipe on Mascara
Curl lashes with an eyelash curler, then sweep two to three coats of a mascara like Lancôme Lash Idole . It gives lashes a fluttery, defined effect that’s perfect for a low-key look.
So, how do you apply it? While a wash of Wild Shadow Pot in Auburn Envy is perfect when you’re in a rush, a little more time affords you a lightly-contoured nude eyeshadow look. The sculpting appears almost undetectable, but it makes your eyes look bigger and gives just enough glow to brighten your whole complexion. Here’s how to get the look…
Keep your eyeliner look soft with the lightest etching of Kohl Pencil in Brown. Nudge it just between the upper eyelashes to lend definition and a subtle lash-plumping effect.
Using the Masterpiece Nude Palette in Golden Nudes, apply the middle gold shade across the entire lid and along the lower lash line, taking it up to the socket for a gilded wash of colour. Apply the deeper bronze shade (sixth shade in) to the crease and blend for subtle contouring. Then, use your finger to tap the lightest shimmer on the inner corner of your eye.
Nude eyeshadow and polished brows are the ultimate no-makeup makeup pairing. Keep your arches groomed using the Brow Shaper eyebrow pencil to frame your eye look flawlessly. First, use the brush end of the pencil to tease strands upwards, revealing any sparse patches. Then fill by sketching the pencil in short, sharp strokes that mimic real hairs. Give brows one final brush-through, and you’ve got natural-looking fullness covered.
Full, fluttery, clump-free lashes are the goal when creating a nude eyeshadow look. Try Masterpiece Max Mascara, which creates up to four times your bare-lash volume in a single sweep. For an eye-opening effect, tuck the mascara brush right into the roots of lashes, then glide through to the tips, zig-zagging the wand as you go for even coverage.
When it comes to makeup, some days I’m totally into the doing the most, and other days the most I’ll do is a tinted moisturizer. But it’s tricky finding a balance between full-face and bare faced, so I’ve sought out advice from makeup artist and Burberry’s makeup artistic consultant Wendy Rowe. Here are her tips for achieving a simple, natural makeup look for those in between days.
Rowe says the key to nailing a natural look is to have a good base. You would never start a painting on a dirty canvas, so make sure your skin is clean and moisturized before you start your makeup. Rowe also says to change your moisturizer like you change your coat. You wouldn’t wear a puffer coat in the summer, so switch out your heavy creams to lighter moisturizers in the summer and vice verse.
Embryolisse Concentrated Lait Cream, $22
For a natural daytime look, Rowe recommends evening out the skin tone while keeping it glowy and light. A water-based product, like the Burberry Fresh Glow Gel Stick, will move with your skin for a natural, hydrated finish unlike a powder-based product, which can crease and dry out. Rowe suggests applying with brush only on the areas where you want to even out your skin rather than all over for the most natural finish.
Burberry Fresh Glow Gel Stick, $48
Rowe says to keep your under eyes looking natural but also concealed, you want to maintain the shadow that your bottom lashes create to prevent the area from looking too flat, which in turn, doesn’t look natural. To do so, Rowe recommends using a sheer concealer only in the inner corner and in the deepest hollow of your under eyes (rather than all the way up to your eye lashes) and blending it in by tapping with your finger.
Laura Mercier Candleglow Concealer and Highlighter, $32
Instead of heavy contour or bright blush, Rowe loves to use a shade that’s slightly gray, which she describes as a “slight shadow with warmth to it.” To apply it, she uses an angled blush brush and swirls it on the apples of the cheeks and along the cheekbones. This, she says, gives you a slightly sculpted, sophisticated look that still looks natural.
Burberry Light Glow Natural Blush in “Earthy Blush No. 7,” $42
Using the same taupe blush as before and a fluffy shadow brush, work the shade into the crease of your eye to give them subtle depth. Then use a black liquid liner to line the eyes, but Rowe says the trick to a subtly lined eye is to lay the tip on the lashes as you draw. This will not only keep the line steady, but it’ll create just enough definition without being too much.
Milani Eye Tech Extreme Liquid Eye Liner, $7
Rowe says when you’ve filled in your brows solid, that’s when they start looking a little fake. In reality, brows have really fine gaps, so to maintain that look, you want to create fine strokes in the direction that the hairs grow. Rather than a powder or pencil, Rowe recommends using a pen to get the most natural effect.
Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Brow Color, $21
Instead of applying the lip color straight from the tube, Rowe suggests rubbing the color onto your finger and blotting it onto the lips for a hint of color without looking too overdone.
We’re always looking for a new beauty look to try—and what’s not to love about bold black eye makeup? This beauty trend has been everywhere from your local hangout to the runway to the red carpet. Of course, a bold look like this one is so much more than eye makeup. Ready your blackest eyeliner and smokiest eye shadow, because we’re sharing how to wear a bold black eye makeup look.
STEP #1: PREP YOUR FACE
Before doing your eye makeup, you want to give yourself a flawless complexion. Here’s how to get one:
1. Apply makeup primer
Start by applying a makeup primer to ensure your look is long-lasting. The L’Oréal Paris Magic Lumi Primer Magic Lumi Light Infusing Primer is a light infusing primer that blends seamlessly into your skin and will give you a luminous glow.
2. Move on to foundation
After applying primer, grab your foundation. For this look, you’ll want a foundation that has high coverage. The L’Oréal Paris Infallible Total Cover Foundation gives 24 hours of full coverage while having a lightweight feel on your skin. Apply it using the L’Oréal Paris Infallible Blend Artist Foundation Blender using dabbing and rolling motions to effortlessly blend it into your skin.
STEP #2: Define Your Face
Don’t let your look fall flat. Sculpted features will truly complement this look. Don’t worry, it won’t take the attention away from your eyes!
1. Highlight with concealer
First use a concealer to leave your eyes looking more awake. Apply the L’Oréal Paris True Match™ Super-Blendable Multi-Use Concealer in a color that is 1-2 shades lighter than your skin tone. Dot it on in an upside-down triangle shape under your eyes, on the bridge of your nose, and on the center of your chin to highlight your features. Blend it in using your same makeup blender for seamless application.
2. Get sun-kissed skin
Next, it’s time to apply a bronzer. The L’Oréal Paris True Match™ Lumi Bronze It Bronzer will give you a sun-kissed glow. Apply the bronzer to the corners of your forehead, jawline, and the hallows of your cheeks.
3. Complete your cheeks with blush
After you’ve applied your bronzer, add a subtle touch of color to your cheeks with a blush. Avoid bright colors as this will take away from the intensity of your eye makeup look. The L’Oréal Paris True Match™ Blush in Rosy Outlook will give your cheeks the perfect flush. Apply this to your cheekbones, steering clear of the apples of your cheeks.
STEP #3: FILL IN YOUR BROWS
Just as important as your eye makeup itself, you want to make sure your brows are full and defined. Fill your eyebrows in using the L’Oréal Paris Brow Stylist Definer Mechanical Pencil. Lightly fill in the natural shape of your brows with purposeful strokes. Comb through your brows to softly blend.
STEP #4: GET YOUR SMOKE ON
Your eye makeup is the center of this look. For a bold black eye look, you’ll want to stick with matte eye shadow shades. The L’Oréal Paris Colour Riche Quads in Cookies & Cream has all the colors you’ll need for this look. Here’s how to apply it.
1. Smudge a grey shade across your lids
First, use the dark grey color allover your lids.
2. Place black eye shadow in the crease
Next, apply the black with a fluffy eye shadow brush to the crease of your eye. Use a blending eye shadow brush to ensure the two colors blend seamlessly.
3. Apply a brow bone highlight
Apply the white shade on your brow bone to highlight it.
4. Define your lower lash line
Take the black shadow with a small, flat top eye shadow brush and drag the shadow along the lower lash line, making sure to blend and smudge the line so it isn’t too harsh.
Once your eye shadow is complete, line your waterline using a black eyeliner to intensify the look. The L’Oréal Paris Pro-Last Waterproof Pencil Eyeliner in Black will last up to 24 hours, making it ideal for your night out.
Finish your eyes by applying mascara. Since this eye makeup look is more intense than your everyday eye look, you’ll want to amp up your lashes a little more than you usually do. The L’Oréal Paris Voluminous X Fiber Mascara in Blackest Black will give your lashes extreme volume and length.
STEP #5: COLOR YOUR POUT
To complete the look, a neutral, barely-there matte lip color will keep the attention on your eyes. The L’Oréal Paris Colour Riche Matte Lipstick in Matte-Cademia is a nearly nude color that will leave your lips feeling soft and smooth.
STEP #6: SEAL IN YOUR MAKEUP
Now that all of your makeup is applied, ensure it lasts by applying a setting spray. Spray the L’Oréal Paris Infallible Pro-Spray & Set Makeup Extender Setting Spray 8-10 inches from your face 4-6 times in an “X” and “T” motion.
