In this day and age, we tend to want things fast. From weight loss to internet speed to a response to your latest email or text, it’s all about instant gratification. This extends to the career sphere, too, where people tend to want to make money and become successful ASAP.

Truthfully, there’s no single secret hack that will make you successful overnight. However, there are certain proactive measures you can take in your career that can help you streamline your journey toward success. Try these tips to become successful faster:

1. Set concrete goals.

To become successful faster, you first need a road map for your career. After all, you can’t take shortcuts if there’s no end point in mind. The definition of success is different for everybody, so it’s important to get clear on your personal goals. What do you want to achieve in your career? Be as specific as you can, because it’s only when you’ve defined concrete goals that you can create actionable steps toward them.

Big, lon- term goals help you create a framework for your career. With goals in mind, you can create mini goals that act as achievable milestones. By setting the bar high, you’ll always have a source of motivation to work hard, which will help you become successful.

2. Establish a routine, and stick to it.

Most successful people already know this: There’s a big benefit to repetition. Routines keep you moving forward and help you to keep growing. For one thing, if you follow a routine, it’s much easier to monitor your progress over time.

For another, a routine helps you establish good habits that can advance your career fairly rapidly.

For instance, say your routine is to read publications related to your career path for an hour after dinner every night. If you set aside specific times for specific activities, after a while it will be like muscle memory. With positive routines in place, you often begin to see results quickly.

First, consider all the things that take up your time that are not helping to further your career. You know, things like checking Twitter every few minutes, or browsing on Amazon while you should be working. Once you’ve identified these time sponges, work hard to either eradicate them or at least keep them in check. It takes discipline to remove distractions, but you’ll be able to focus more, which will get you where you want to go career-wise a whole lot faster.

5. Learn how to say no.

Writer Herbert Bayard Swope mused, “I can’t give you a surefire formula for success, but I can give you a formula for failure: Try to please everybody all the time.”

Saying yes is easy and it’s gratifying. But if you say yes to too much, it could be sucking you dry. If you’re a yes person, you’re probably agreeing to take on way too many projects and commitments. Or you’re the type of person who agrees readily to things and then flakes out at the last minute. Either way, these tendencies are not doing you any favors in terms of career advancement.

It can be hard to say no, but it is usually better in the long run. It shows integrity, and you won’t find yourself wasting time on things that aren’t advancing your career.

6. Be smart about money.

It’s hard to get ahead when you’re constantly playing catch-up or living paycheck to paycheck. If you want to become successful faster, you need to get smart about saving money.

Do yourself a solid and put away some of every paycheck in your savings account. Yes, it might be boring, but a little restraint now can add up to success in the not-too-distant future. Successful people often live below their means. This isn’t to be stingy, but because they know that it sometimes takes money to make money, and they want to be prepared.

When you are smart about saving money, you’ll be able to grow over time with a safety net. When it comes to making an investment or starting up a business venture, you’ll be ready to move quickly and do it without breaking the bank.

7. Learn from your mistakes.

As Truman Capote once wrote, “Failure is the condiment that gives success its flavor.” The more you venture out of your comfort zone as an entrepreneur, the higher the likelihood you have of making mistakes.

If you want to become successful, you can’t let these missteps crush or break you down. Rather than seeing them as the end of the world, can you see them as an opportunity? Ultimately, failures can be our biggest teachers. After all, what feels like failure today could in fact be teaching you a lesson that will help you avoid a much bigger failure in the future.

Focus on progress, not perfection. If you can learn from your mistakes, you’ll become stronger and more savvy, and this can help you become successful far faster.

I’ve trained with some of the best coaches on the planet during my 20-year sports career, and again when I competed in the 2008 Olympics.

But when I wanted to start my own company, to share my knowledge about motivational psychology and training with others, it wasn’t as easy as I’d thought it would be.

Launching a new business is not easy. You have to give up the comforts of a stable paycheck to delve into the unknown, an unpredictable abyss. A lot of things keep us from making the leap—things like fear and insecurity. And one thing above all the rest: motivation.

When I looked back on my days as an athlete, I understood what was different. I remembered what (or who) made me push myself even when I didn’t want to. The difference was, as an athlete, I had structured days and a coach to report to. Structure keeps us focused and a coach keeps pushing and challenging us.

Thankfully I passed this stage and I founded Onbotraining, an online coaching service that helps people achieve their goals. I decided to collect the lessons I’ve learned along the way and to share them with others, like you, striving to better themselves.

So here are my 10 best tips for achieving anything you want in life.

1. Focus on commitment, not motivation.

Just how committed are you to your goal? How important is it for you, and what are you willing to sacrifice in order to achieve it? If you find yourself fully committed, motivation will follow.

2. Seek knowledge, not results.

If you focus on the excitement of discovery, improving, exploring and experimenting, your motivation will always be fueled. If you focus only on results, your motivation will be like weather—it will die the minute you hit a storm. So the key is to focus on the journey, not the destination. Keep thinking about what you are learning along the way and what you can improve.

3. Make the journey fun.

It’s an awesome game! The minute you make it serious, there’s a big chance it will start carrying a heavy emotional weight and you will lose perspective and become stuck again.

4. Get rid of stagnating thoughts.

Thoughts influence feelings and feelings determine how you view your work. You have a lot of thoughts in your head, and you always have a choice of which ones to focus on: the ones that will make you emotionally stuck (fears, doubts) or the ones that will move you forward (excitement, experimenting, trying new things, stepping out of your comfort zone).

5. Use your imagination.

Next step after getting rid of negative thoughts is to use your imagination. When things go well, you are full of positive energy, and when you are experiencing difficulties, you need to be even more energetic. So rename your situation. If you keep repeating I hate my work, guess which feelings those words will evoke? It’s a matter of imagination! You can always find something to learn even from the worst boss in the world at the most boring job. I have a great exercise for you: Just for three days, think and say positive things only. See what happens.

6. Stop being nice to yourself.

Motivation means action and action brings results. Sometimes your actions fail to bring the results you want. So you prefer to be nice to yourself and not put yourself in a difficult situation. You wait for the perfect timing, for an opportunity, while you drive yourself into stagnation and sometimes even into depression. Get out there, challenge yourself, do something that you want to do even if you are afraid.

7. Get rid of distractions.

Meaningless things and distractions will always be in your way, especially those easy, usual things you would rather do instead of focusing on new challenging and meaningful projects. Learn to focus on what is the most important. Write a list of time-wasters and hold yourself accountable to not do them.

8. Don’t rely on others.

You should never expect others to do it for you, not even your partner, friend or boss. They are all busy with their own needs. No one will make you happy or achieve your goals for you. It’s all on you.

9. Plan.

Know your three steps forward. You do not need more. Fill out your weekly calendar, noting when you will do what and how. When-what-how is important to schedule. Review how each day went by what you learned and revise what you could improve.

10. Protect yourself from burnout.

It’s easy to burn out when you are very motivated. Observe yourself to recognize any signs of tiredness and take time to rest. Your body and mind rest when you schedule relaxation and fun time into your weekly calendar. Do diverse tasks, keep switching between something creative and logical, something physical and still, working alone and with a team. Switch locations. Meditate, or just take deep breaths, close your eyes, or focus on one thing for five minutes.

You lack motivation not because you are lazy or don’t have a goal. Even the biggest stars, richest businesspeople or the most accomplished athletes get lost sometimes. What makes them motivated is the curiosity about how much better or faster they can get. So above all, be curious, and this will lead you to your goals and success.

The most successful people in this world maintain and master good habits. They realize what they do on a daily basis and where they direct their energy deeply matters when it comes to reaching their goals.

The habits you have picked up over the past couple of years is a reflection of where you are right this moment.

The sad news is that most people don’t have very good habits. The great news is if you are unhappy where you are at in your life you can gradually change the trajectory by altering what you do daily. To achieve high levels of success, you must start to develop the habits of the highly successful.

Below you will find four habits that will help you maximize the results you have been producing and live the life of your dreams.

1. Focus your energy. Learning how to direct your energy towards your most rewarding tasks is crucial for achieving high levels of success. One of the biggest mistakes that many people make is directing their energy towards low-valued tasks. Take a look at everything you have going on right now in your life. Pay close attention and ask yourself what the high-valued tasks are — the ones that have the potential to bring the most reward to you and your business.

2. Ability to prioritize. Think of what is your most important goal right this moment. If you had to pick one goal that would make everything else in your life tick, this is it. High achievers never lose sight of what their major goal is. Every day, do something that will inch you closer to the achievement of your main goal.

3. Can project and complete tasks. Being able to start something and follow through until it’s completed is a key to long-term success.

Picture yourself completely finishing your projects and tasks. Take note of how you feel visualizing yourself getting the job done. The more you can picture yourself following through and completing important tasks, the more determined you will be to actually do so.

4. Having a PMA. To be successful, you need to have a positive mental attitude, or PMA. If you do nothing about negative thoughts, chances are you will be settling for average. Instead, you need to continually feed your mind with positive thoughts.

A great percentage of successful people have all experienced some sort of setback or failure. They could have just stopped their journey right there and called it quits. Instead, they had a positive mental attitude about themselves and their abilities, which gave them the power needed to continue along and reach their goals. Creating this sort of attitude could be one of your most important habits that you end up incorporating on a daily basis.

No matter where you are in life, there is always more to reach for. When you constantly strive to become a better person, refine your skill set and invest in your future daily, you become more as an individual. When you become more as an individual, your value increases. The more your value increases, the more successful you will become — and it all starts with your habits.

It’s not that hard to be successful. But it is hard to be incredibly successful.

As Cloninger says, “To succeed, you want to be able to regulate your impulses while also having the imagination to see what the future would be like if you tried something new.”

Sounds like every successful person I know.

So go ahead. Embrace your inner novelty seeker. You’ll be healthier, you’ll have more friends, and you’ll be generally more satisfied with life.

3. You don’t think work/life balance, you just think life.

Symbolic work/life boundaries are almost impossible to maintain. Why? You are your business. Your business is your life, just like your life is your business–which is also true for family, friends, and interests–so there is no separation because all those things make you who you are.

Incredibly successful people find ways to include family instead of ways to exclude work. They find ways to include interests, hobbies, passions, and personal values in their daily business lives.

If you can’t, you’re not living–you’re just working.

4. You’re incredibly empathetic.

Unless you create something entirely new–which is really hard to do–your business or profession is based on fulfilling an existing need or solving a problem.

It’s impossible to identify a need or a problem without the ability to put yourself in another person’s shoes. That’s the mark of a successful businessperson.

But exceptionally successful leaders go a step further, regularly putting themselves in the shoes of their employees. (Here’s what that looks like in practice.)

Success isn’t a line trending upwards. Success is a circle, because no matter how high your business–and your ego–soars, success still comes back to your employees.

5. You have something to prove–to yourself.

Many people have a burning desire to prove other people wrong. That’s a great motivator.

Incredibly successful people are driven by something deeper and more personal. True drive, commitment, and dedication spring from a desire to prove something to the most important person of all.

6. You ignore the 40-hour workweek hype.

Studies show that working more than 40 hours a week decreases productivity.

Successful people work smarter, sure, but they also outwork their competition. (Every successful entrepreneur I know who reads those stories probably thinks, “Cool. Hopefully my competitors will believe that crap.”)

The author Richard North Patterson tells a great story about Robert Kennedy. Kennedy was seeking to indict Teamsters head Jimmy Hoffa (who some still believe is hanging out in Argentina with Elvis and Jim Morrison). One night, Kennedy worked on the Hoffa case until about 2 a.m. On his way home, he passed the Teamsters building and saw the lights were still on in Hoffa’s office, so he turned around and went back to work.

There will always be people who are smarter and more talented than we are. Successful people simply want it more. They’re ruthless–especially with themselves.

In short, they work smarter. and they also work harder. That’s the real secret of their success.

7. You see money as a responsibility, not a reward.

Many entrepreneurial cautionary tales involve buying 17 cars, loading up on pricey antiques, importing Christmas trees, and spending $40,000 a year for a personal masseuse. (Wait–maybe that’s just Adelphia founder John Rigas.)

Successful people don’t see money solely as a personal reward; they see money as a way to grow a business, reward and develop employees, give back to the community. in short, not just to make their own lives better but to improve the lives of other people, too.

And most importantly, they do so without fanfare, because the true reward is always in the act, not the recognition.

8. You don’t think you’re remarkable.

In a world of social media, everyone can be their own PR agent. It’s incredibly easy for anyone to blow their own horn and bask in the glow of their insight and accomplishments.

Truly successful people don’t. They accept their success is based on ambition, persistence, and execution. but they also recognize that key mentors, remarkable employees, and a huge dose of luck also played a part.

Exceptionally successful people reap the rewards of humility, asking questions, seeking advice, and especially recognizing and praising others because.

9. You know that success is fleeting, but dignity and respect last forever.

6. Have a Firm Resolution to Succeed

“I made a resolve that I was going to amount to something if I could. And no hours, amount of labor or amount of money would deter me from giving the best that there is in me. And I have done that ever since and win by it. I know.”

Often, people start working on their plan to success full of enthusiasm and confidence. But as they encounter some difficulties or their circumstances change, they immediately give up or change their aim. This is entirely wrong.

Remember, a GOAL is never easy to achieve. You will face hardships at each and every station of your journey. Only those who halt for a while at the station, drink a little water and continue their journey reach their GOALS. So, always have a stable resolution and do not compromise in it.

7. A Lifetime of Self-Examination

People make mistakes and their attitudes change. This is how they grow. It is important to take time to examine yourself and your attitudes along the way.

A brittle person is a good candidate for crumbling dust. Examine yourself and your business practices, not just your finances and profits. In the end, it is your attitude that makes you successful in life, career or business. So, start examining yourself today.

1. You find happiness in the success of others.

Great business teams win because their most talented members are willing to sacrifice to make others happy. Great teams are made up of employees who help each other, know their roles, set aside personal goals, and value team success over everything else.

2. You relentlessly seek new experiences.

Novelty seeking–getting bored easily and throwing yourself into new pursuits or activities–is often linked to gambling, drug abuse, attention deficit disorder, and leaping out of perfectly good airplanes without a parachute.

But according to Dr. Robert Cloninger, “Novelty seeking is one of the traits that keeps you healthy and happy and fosters personality growth as you age. If you combine adventurousness and curiosity with persistence and a sense that it’s not all about you, then you get the creativity that benefits society as a whole.”

As Cloninger says, “To succeed, you want to be able to regulate your impulses while also having the imagination to see what the future would be like if you tried something new.”

Sounds like every successful person I know.

So go ahead. Embrace your inner novelty seeker. You’ll be healthier, you’ll have more friends, and you’ll be generally more satisfied with life.

3. You don’t think work/life balance, you just think life.

Symbolic work/life boundaries are almost impossible to maintain. Why? You are your business. Your business is your life, just like your life is your business–which is also true for family, friends, and interests–so there is no separation because all those things make you who you are.

Incredibly successful people find ways to include family instead of ways to exclude work. They find ways to include interests, hobbies, passions, and personal values in their daily business lives.

If you can’t, you’re not living–you’re just working.

4. You’re incredibly empathetic.

Unless you create something entirely new–which is really hard to do–your business or profession is based on fulfilling an existing need or solving a problem.

It’s impossible to identify a need or a problem without the ability to put yourself in another person’s shoes. That’s the mark of a successful businessperson.

Success isn’t a line trending upwards. Success is a circle, because no matter how high your business–and your ego–soars, success still comes back to your employees.

5. You have something to prove–to yourself.

Many people have a burning desire to prove other people wrong. That’s a great motivator.

Incredibly successful people are driven by something deeper and more personal. True drive, commitment, and dedication spring from a desire to prove something to the most important person of all.

6. You ignore the 40-hour workweek hype.

Studies show that working more than 40 hours a week decreases productivity.

Successful people work smarter, sure, but they also outwork their competition. (Every successful entrepreneur I know who reads those stories probably thinks, “Cool. Hopefully my competitors will believe that crap.”)

The author Richard North Patterson tells a great story about Robert Kennedy. Kennedy was seeking to indict Teamsters head Jimmy Hoffa (who some still believe is hanging out in Argentina with Elvis and Jim Morrison). One night, Kennedy worked on the Hoffa case until about 2 a.m. On his way home, he passed the Teamsters building and saw the lights were still on in Hoffa’s office, so he turned around and went back to work.

There will always be people who are smarter and more talented than we are. Successful people simply want it more. They’re ruthless–especially with themselves.

In short, they work smarter. and they also work harder. That’s the real secret of their success.

7. You see money as a responsibility, not a reward.

Many entrepreneurial cautionary tales involve buying 17 cars, loading up on pricey antiques, importing Christmas trees, and spending $40,000 a year for a personal masseuse. (Wait–maybe that’s just Adelphia founder John Rigas.)

Successful people don’t see money solely as a personal reward; they see money as a way to grow a business, reward and develop employees, give back to the community. in short, not just to make their own lives better but to improve the lives of other people, too.

And most importantly, they do so without fanfare, because the true reward is always in the act, not the recognition.

8. You don’t think you’re remarkable.

In a world of social media, everyone can be their own PR agent. It’s incredibly easy for anyone to blow their own horn and bask in the glow of their insight and accomplishments.

Truly successful people don’t. They accept their success is based on ambition, persistence, and execution. but they also recognize that key mentors, remarkable employees, and a huge dose of luck also played a part.

Exceptionally successful people reap the rewards of humility, asking questions, seeking advice, and especially recognizing and praising others because.

9. You know that success is fleeting, but dignity and respect last forever.

Providing employees with higher pay, better benefits, and greater opportunities is certainly important. But no level of pay and benefits can overcome damage to self-esteem and self-worth. (Here’s a heartbreaking story that illustrates the point.)

The most important thing successful people provide their employees, customers, vendors–everyone they meet–is dignity.
