How to curl extensions

The best way to make straight hair curly involves testing the various options to see which works best. Sponge rollers and making tiny buns are two ways to get curls without involving heat. Using a curling iron is one of the easiest methods for getting various sized curls. These three methods create temporary curls while getting a perm is a semi-permanent method.

Foam rollers, also known as sponge rollers, can help with making straight hair curly. The hair should be slightly damp when starting. Take a small section of hair that fits evenly into the roller, then start from the tips and roll the hair up until it gets to the roots. Put the roller lock in place, then continue doing the rest of the hair. Sleep with the rollers in overnight if possible; otherwise, leave them in for several hours.

Another option for making straight hair curly is to create small twisted buns. Starting at the center part, grab a small section of hair and twist it from root to tip. When the piece is completely twisted, start wrapping it around the base of the section until there is a small and tight twisted bun formed. Secure it in place with one or two bobby pins, then continue the process until all the hair is in little buns. Leave it in for several hours so the curls have a chance to form.

A curling iron is the quickest way to make straight hair curly. The larger the barrel of the curling iron, the larger and more loose the curls are going to be. Put the hair up in a hair claw to start working with the hair underneath. Grab a small section of hair, and while holding the curling iron open, hold the tip of the hair and wrap it around the barrel. Leave it in place for at least ten seconds, then release the curl without pulling it.

Getting a perm, which is a chemical treatment performed at home or by a stylist, is an additional option for making straight hair curly, but not everyone is a good candidate for it. Those who have very thin or extremely damaged or processed hair may want to refrain from this option, as it could damage the hair further or not even take as well as expected. The process takes approximately two hours but it takes around a day for the perm to fully set. It will last about six months, at which time the process will have to be repeated.

While the hair is still straight, use mousse specifically meant for forming curls. After the curls are in place, use a shine serum or finishing creme to help keep them from frizzing. Flip the hair upside down and spray underneath with hairspray, then flip the hair back over to spray the top.

When curling hair extensions, you are able to give body to your hair and get those thick and luscious locks you desire! This is especially useful for those of us who have fine or thin hair.

Heat Resistant Extensions

Before you take out your curling iron, it is important to take into consideration the type of hair extensions you have before styling… you don’t want to risk damaging your beautiful alternative hair! While human hair can be styled using higher heat, synthetic hair is a little bit different as it is not always heat friendly. You must make sure you know what type of hair you are working with before starting! With heat friendly synthetic hair, you are able to use heat tools, as long as you don’t exceed 350 degrees. Follow the five easy steps below for quick, gorgeously curled hair.

How To Curl Hair Extensions

Before we begin, curl your own hair as you normally would. We are going to style the synthetic hair extensions prior to installing them… so go ahead and curl your bio hair so we can knock that part out of the way!

Step One: Make sure that your curling wand is set anywhere from 250-350 degrees if your extensions are synthetic. If you exceed this temperature, you risk melting the synthetic fibers! It’s important to remember not to use a regular hairbrush on alternative hair, instead use a wide tooth wig comb !

Step Two: Next, get the hair extensions ready for styling. Remember not to style the extensions before putting in! Using a Styrofoam head and T-Pins, pin your hair extensions to the Styrofoam head so that the hair extensions will stay secure while curling.

Step Three: Once the curling wand has warmed up to the correct temperature, wrap small portions of the hair around the curling wand and hold for 5-10 seconds.

Step Four: Clip it to cool it! Remove the curling wand, but keep the coiled hair in place until it cools using a clip or your fingers. This step is crucial in ensuring that the synthetic hair holds the curl! Repeat these three steps until you have beautifully curled hair extensions!

Step Five: Mist with hairspray designed for wigs and extensions. Make sure not to use hairspray formulated for bio hair… this can damage your hair extensions. Use Heat Treat by Jon Renau to extend the life of your extensions, so you can have beautiful hair for months to come!

Styles to curl your hair extensions

Style 1: Classic Flat Curl

So, the classic flat curl is a no-brainer, every girl either knows or needs to know how to get this simple go-to look. Simply start by wrapping your hair or your clip-in extensions around the barrel of the wand all the way to the ends. Don’t allow any spaces between the ribbons of hair and I would say give it about 10 seconds to get a nice, solid curl. Then, allow it too cool in your hand for a couple of seconds. Follow this pattern all over and you will get an elegant, classy, curl that is perfect for any special occasion or just to add a little something extra to a casual look.

Style 2: Twisted Spiral Curl

The first step is to take a small section of your hair or hair extensions, and twist it all the way to the end. Next, wrap the twist tightly around the curling wand. After the curl is set, allow it to cool in the palm of your hand for a bit and then release it. This curl is great for a night out on the town with friends or a fun day of shopping.

Style 3: Soft Hollywood Wave

Start by wrapping your hair or clip-in hair extensions around the barrel horizontally. Now, instead of holding the hair in place on the barrel, gently roll the barrel up and down. Also, instead of allowing the curl to cool in your hand or releasing it completely, you’ll need to pin the curl up using hair clips. Complete this process all over. Once all of your hair has cooled you can take the pins out and brush the curls all over. Don’t be afraid to brush it good since you’re going for more of a soft wave instead of curl.

Style 4: Victoria Secret Curl

Divide your hair or hair extensions into four equal parts, two at the front, two at the back. Starting at the bottom of each section curl your hair up and hold until the curl is set. Pin the curl up and start the next section. Once each section is done and pinned allow them to cool down completely. Then, simply let the curls down and shake, shake, shake.

How to curl extensions

Now that the world is slowly but surely opening back up, it’s time to brush out those extensions for a night on the town. Maybe you’re headed out with girlfriends for a long-awaited girl’s night? Or perhaps you’re gearing up for a dinner date with that special someone. Whatever the occasion, we’re all excited to get back out in the world, and it’s a great excuse to glam it up! For me, a night out is never complete without hair extensions – check out this post, this one, or this one for ideas. Now, you might notice that in many of our tutorials we suggest curling your hair and extensions as the first step. But if you’re new to extensions, that leaves out some very important information: how to curl hair extensions. In this post, I share my three favorite techniques to make curling your hair extensions a breeze. Let’s get started!

Before You Start: Detangle.

Option 1: Curl Before Clipping.

Option 2: The Over-The-Hair Technique.

How to curl extensions

This technique is my personal favorite! Clip one track at a time onto the crown of your head, over your natural hair. Yes, I know it looks crazy, but it’s only for while you’re curling! Simply section the extension hair, and curl each piece as you normally would. This technique is great when you are trying to get your curls going a certain direction. Though your extensions are few inches above where you’d actually place them, your curling form will be the same, which ensures they curl in the direction you intend them to. Curling this way works even if your hair is un-styled, and it’s also perfect if you don’t want to separate your natural curls too much.

Option 3: The Clipped-In Curl.

How to curl extensions

Our final option for how to curl hair extensions is to simply clip the tracks into your hair as normal, and curl them together with your natural hair. You can even separate everything into layers once your tracks are clipped! This technique is perfect if you need to curl and style quickly, and it’s a great way to blend extensions with your natural hair. The only time I would not recommend this is if you’re using a curling method that tugs on the hair. Once your wefts are clipped in place, you don’t want to tug too hard – this causes them to slip! While the Cashmere clips are rubber-backed for slip-proof wear, repeated hard tugging will push their limits.

How to curl your hair extensions: Crimping

Crimped hair was one of the biggest trends in hair and rose in mainstream popularity during the “highly fashionable” 80’s. The best thing about hair crimping is that you don’t even need a hair crimper to achieve this look – you can achieve the exact same look with a hair straightener!

1) Start the hair crimping process by braiding parts of your hair into three different braids and then tying them up with hair elastics.

2) Then press your hair straightener (this may work best with a GHD) onto the three braids you have just created and slide along as if you were straightening your hair.

3) Remove all hair elastics and you will then have 80’s style crimped hair!

How to curl hair extensions: Loose waves

Loose waves are a great hair style for that little-to-no-effort effect, creating a subtle head of loose curls perfect for this upcoming season. Loose curls or waves have been one of the most popular trends in hair as they are not too over the top but still cute and casual. We show you how to curl your hair extensions in the next few steps below!

1) Once again, all you need to achieve loose curls or waves is a hair straightener. Be sure to start your loose curls by applying a heat protector over your hair and also clipping or tying up sections of your hair that you will curl later.

2) Start by taking a section of your hair and spraying it with hair spray to ensure it will stay in place while you are curling the other sections.

3) Clamp your hair straightener halfway down your hair and twist the section away from your face until you reach the ends of your hair.

4) Keep in mind that the faster you slide down on your hair, the softer the curl will be. Pressing down slower on the section of hair will create a bigger and more defined curl.

5) You can then brush through your curled sections of hair with a soft bristled brush to create a looser, and fluffier head of curls.

How to curl hair extensions: Big bouncy curls

The big beautiful curls have made a return! We’re seeing more and more girls with hair styled to the roof with the biggest bounciest curls you have ever seen! Perfect for a night out or the end of year formal, we’ve got your easiest instructions for how to curl your hair extensions.

When reading how to curl hair extensions, the temperature of your styling tool is always in important factor in how your style will look once complete.

2) Ensure that all your hair is dry before you apply any heat. Use a heat protector over the top for extra protection against excessive heat damage.

3) Separate the hair into sections, this is so that the hair can be styled as quickly as possible, as the curling process can be a timely process.

4) Clip the top half of the hair up so that you can begin styling the bottom section of the hair. Wrap sections of your hair (one by one), holding it still on the wand and then release within 5-10 seconds. Repeat the process until all hair sections are complete.

How to curl extensions

You now have big glamorous curls, styled to last you all night. You now know how to curl hair extensions! Watch the short clip below for a more detailed tutorial.

Call it the Kardashian effect but we all long for those lucious glam curls or effortless beachy waves seen on the red carpet, but when it comes to curling our hair, we’re all stumped so where can you turn when you want those enviable curls?

First and foremost, you want to make sure you’re working with the best tools.

Before deciding on your curling method, familiarize yourself with the best products on the market to achieve the look without damaging your hair. The best curling irons will likely be ceramic, titanium or tourmaline as they provide even heat distribution for a smooth surface that won’t damage your hair.

Then, select what type of curl you’d like to create:

For tighter curls, a small-barreled iron will be your best bet. For looser waves, a large-barreled iron will help achieve that old Hollywood glam.

For that coveted side swoop, wrap the front piece of your hair away from your face and pull the curl out toward the back. Pulling the hair from the crown of your head forward with the iron will also help increase volume and give your hair some lift.

Another great trick is to hold your iron vertically for looser curls, and horizontally for bouncier, tighter curls. For short hair, it’s best to use a small-barreled iron facing down which will create tighter curls on the underside and give your hair a bouncy, voluminous look.

There are different types of waves you can create depending on your process. For natural looking waves, let your hair air dry after washing, then curl. For a voluminous look, blow dry your hair to create extra volume, and then curl. For sleek curls, you can straighten your hair, then curl for a shiny wave.

The drying methods will help your curling iron do its job while also eliminating the chance of burning your hair with it. For best results, It is not recommended to use an iron on wet hair.

Always allow curls to set:

If you want to build long lasting curls, slowly slide your hair off the wand into your palm allowing the curl to cool before dropping. This will allow your curl to set, resulting in longer-lasting curls. If you’d like to go a step further, you can also clip your curls straight off the barrel in coils on the top of your head so they can fully cool and set, then for extra hold, spray the clipped curls before letting them down.

Find shortcuts where possible:

We don’t always have time to perfect our hair look but you can still get great hair in a pinch.

If you’d like to keep the top sleep but have wavy ends, curl your hair while it’s in a low ponytail for effortless waves. Once your hair is curled and cooled, take down the ponytail and spray with your favorite stylist product for a soft hold that will make it last.

If you’d like all over curls, repeat the above steps on a high ponytail and release. Set with a styling product and enjoy a great hair day!
