But before you simply combine a pint and some ice in a blender and push pulse, let’s discuss the optimal approach. After all, we’re not in the business of diluting a good beer simply in the name of coldness. There’s a method to this madness, and some context to boot.
While Americans have long sung the praises of ice-cold beer, the beer slushie was actually devised elsewhere. Exceptional culinary minds in Thailand brought the drink to life, the perfect complement for muggy weather and spicy cuisine. Also dubbed a jelly beer, these unbelievably cold brews benefit from a special container full of ice and salt. The beers are kept in motion by a subtle motor (so they don’t fully freeze) and when they’re cracked, they spill from the bottle at below 30 degrees with a slushie-like texture. Folks who have dined at places like Uncle Boons in NYC or Pok Pok (RIP) in Portland have likely witnessed and enjoyed such beers.
If you want to invest in a high-tech contraption that will make you a jelly beer, go for it. Yet, you can achieve just about the same quality through a pretty simple DIY method that requires very little extra gear or knowhow.
Start by selecting a lower-alcohol beer, like a lager or pilsner. A hop-bomb like an IPA can taste a bit off when frozen, as the green and bitter notes tend to skew some. Adding a bit of citrus (lemon or lime juice) and sweetness (simple syrup or a fruit liqueur of some kind) is recommended, as it can offset the dilution of the ice. You can also use grenadine or even some lemon lime soda.
The simplest way to pull this off is by creating the above mixture and pouring it into an ice tray or other freezable vessel. Freeze it, then blend. Don’t overdo it with your blending or you’ll end up back where you started, a fully liquid state. A lower setting at minimal increments is a good way to start. You can pause as you go to check in on the consistency.
Another method involves creating the slushie texture as you go. Freeze the mixture in a shallow container for about two hours, scraping it every thirty minutes to keep it from fully solidifying. In the end, you’ll have a Slurpee-like serving of beer, ideal for hot weather happy hour.
Throw a pint glass or two in the freezer beforehand, as a chilled vessel works best (preferably one with a handle to create some distance between the drink and your relatively warm hand). A spoon is great for scooping but the best way to enjoy a beer slushie is through a stainless steel straw. There’s hardly a more playful way to drink a beer.
And for the diehard IPA heads out there, it can be done. You’ll just need a little extra juice or fresh fruit to round out the hops. Go with something substantial like a double IPA . The higher ABV style will freeze more slowly, but it will stand up nicely to dilution and whatever you select to counter the bitterness (try tropical flavors like pineapple juice or orange juice).

Usually this means putting your desired drink in the freezer and waiting until it reaches the desired state of being froze, however with this awesome method you can have a frozen slushie drink in just a few minutes!

Step 1: Gather What You Will Need

Step 2: Pour Drink Into Plastic Bag
Pour the drink into one of the plastic bags. Make sure that you seal the plastic bag completely to ensure no spills.
Step 3: Put Plastic Bag Inside Other Bag
Put the plastic bag with the drink in it inside of the other plastic bag. Again, make sure that the plastic bag with drink in it is completely sealed.
Step 4: Fill Bag With Ice
Fill the outer bag with ice. Make sure to leave enough room to be able to close the bag.
Step 5: Pour Salt in Bag
Pour salt into the outer bag. You should be pouring the salt on top of the ice. How will this work? Salt and ice create a chemical reaction that “superchill” your inside drink. This will require quite a bit of salt.
Step 6: Shake Bag for About 5 Minutes
Now seal the outer plastic bag that is containing everything and shake. Shake the bag for a good 3 – 5 minutes or until you can visually see the drink become a slush state.
WARNING : The bag will get very cold, so consider using a towel to shake and handle the bag.
Step 7: Enjoy!
After shaking the bag for about 5 minutes, the inside drink will have became a slushy! Do this with any drink including soda, juice, or just water! Coffee specialty drinks cover an array of styles, hot and cold. Lattes, frappuccinos, mocha, espresso and what not. There seems to be a coffee variety for everyone. If you haven’t found yours, that type of coffee that just sings to you, then perhaps this coffee slushie will.
Coffee slushies are just that — a coffee-flavored icy drink with the same texture of any drink made in a slush machine, like a Slurpee.
Slushy drinks became popular some years ago, and now you can find them in many convenience stores. Still, the refreshing drink category found a new market recently. Icy, boozy drinks.
One of the most popular party starters is the coffee slushy, especially with a splash of whiskey, coffee liqueur or brandy. Although spiking up your slushie is tons of fun, today we’re keeping it family-friendly, making a sans-alcohol coffee slushie. What you do with it later is your own business if you know what I mean.
Now, getting a slushie right is a bit harder than just throwing everything into a blender, mainly because home blenders don’t work like a slush machine. You need to keep liquid ingredients to the minimum, or else your slushie will be too runny.
Having said that, we’ll use half a cup of water and another one of milk or your favorite milk alternative. Then we’re using only solids — instant freeze-dried coffee and sugar . Don’t try using regular coffee or simple syrup, or you won’t get that icy texture.
We must create our own coffee ice cubes for the perfect iciness, which will blend nicely into a slush. This is a superb technique, and although you must wait for your ice cubes to set, it’s totally worth it.
Since we’re using very little liquid (basically just the milk), there’s a chance your home blender will have a hard time. If it gets stuck, just pour a little more milk, one splash at a time, until your hard-working appliance slushes your creamy coffee.
Once you have your coffee slushie ready, have fun with it. Pour it in a glass and top it with whipped cream, chocolate syrup and crushed nuts; let your creativity flow!
News flash, everybody: Summer is hot. I always seem to forget how hot it gets here in California, until it happens. The temperature starts to creep into the high 90s and I start to panic. It’s that how many layers of clothes can I remove in this social situation and still remain decent? sort of panic.
I’ve come up with a solution to cool things down: How about we make some slushies? They’re easy to whip up in a blender, made with real fruit, and best of all, ice cold.
When I was a teenager, I used to drive my crop-top-sporting, bedazzled-shorts-wearing self to 7-11 and dish myself out a Cherry-and-Cola Big Gulp. The red and brown ice would mix together into a dark brown sugar rush.
But as I get older, I find that I can tolerate sugar less and less. I have a feeling that if I tried to suck down a Big Gulp now, my heart might explode. But this doesn’t stop the urge for one of my favorite summer treats! I had to create a slushie that didn’t make me feel like I was about to have a heart attack.
It all started with this Watermelon & Mint Slushie. Since then I’ve been experimenting with all kinds of fruits and flavor combos in order to bring you a formula that you can easily tweak for your own fruity creations. It turns out that it doesn’t take much to make a healthier, satisfying version of this old summer favorite. It’s a simple ratio of fruit, ice, and sparking water!
My favorite part in this process is thinking of fun and creative add-ins once you’ve got your fruits picked out for your base. You can just add a few herbs for a flavor pop, some honey to sweeten the deal, or a bit of citrus to give it a kick! I’m sure you can think of countless other combos, but I give a few of my favorite add-ins at the end of the recipe below.

High-powered blender (or blender strong enough to crush ice)
Wash and chop the fruit: Wash the fruit and chop it into manageable pieces. Discard any pits. You can leave peels on or remove them, as you prefer. Measure the fruit to make sure you have 1 1/2 to 2 cups total.
Combine the ingredients in a blender: Combine the chopped fruit with 1 cup of ice and the sparkling water in a high-powered blender. If you're using any flavoring extras, like mint or lemon juice, add them now.
Blend on high until the mixture is the consistency of a slushie: Blend on high speed until the ice is completely crushed and the fruit is blended. Check the texture and add more ice or more fruit as needed to reach your desired slushie consistency. If the type of fruit you're using has more water in it (such as watermelon), it might affect the amount of ice needed. The ratio of 1 1/2 cups fruit to 1 cup ice is a really great jumping-off point.
Pour into a glass and drink it up! Slushies are best if sipped right away! They will lose their slushie-like consistency the longer you wait.
