How to Make a Watermelon Fruit Basket
Watermelon fruit bowls look so beautiful on a barbecue or cookout food spread. They are easy to make and look super impressive!
Simply follow these easy step-by-step instructions and fill with your favorite fruit salad or dip recipe.
- Ripe watermelon
- Large sharp knife.
- Razor blade knife or craft knife.
- Melon-ball tool (optional)
Make the Bottom Flat
With a large sharp knife, cut a very thin slice from either long side of the melon. Making the bottom flat will allow the melon to sit upright without wobbling. It also makes it much easier to cut the edges out of the top of the melon!
Cut Off the Top
Scoop Out the Center
Use a melon-baller to remove edible watermelon pulp and reserve for fruit salad or other use. you can also carve out the melon with a regular knife or scoop it out with a spoon. The balled melon looks the nicest in the fruit salad, but you can also cut it into chunks!
Carve the Edge
Carve evenly-spaced V-shaped notches around the top edge of the watermelon bowl. Have them connect to form the zigzag shape at the top. It you are look to create a round edge, space them farther apart and then round the edges with your sharp knife.

A watermelon fruit bowl is so darn pretty to serve at a party. You can fill it with all kinds of colorful fruit. It displays well and look gorgeous on your serving table.
This version turns your watermelon fruit bowl into an adults- only fruit salad. Chop up whatever fruit you’d like for this recipe. I recommend watermelon (of course), honeydew melon, strawberries, blueberries and blackberries. You’ll be drizzling a boozy syrup over the top to create a Liquored Up Watermelon Fruit Bowl!
How to Make a Watermelon Fruit Bowl:
The most important step in making a watermelon fruit bowl is making the bowl itself out of an actual watermelon. Buy a seedless watermelon from the store. Cut it in half either lengthwise or crosswise (depending on what shape you’d like your bowl to be).
You’ll notice that the (round) watermelon half might be a little wobbly when you try to set it on your work surface. There’s a solution for that! Just cut a thin slice on the bottom of the watermelon to create a flat area on which the watermelon can sit.
Then you’ll take a knife and gently cut around the edge of the watermelon half- near the rind. Then take a knife or a flat ice cream scoop or large spoon to cut out chunks of the watermelon until you have created a nice bowl inside the watermelon half. You can then cut the watermelon into chunks to use in the salad. Repeat with the other half if you’d like to make two bowls!
Add the fruit to the bowl. At this point, you have three choices for how to serve this. Serve it as a fruit bowl just the way it is (without any alcohol), make a lime simple syrup and drizzle that on top, or make the liquored up simple syrup and drizzle that on top.
If you’re making the liquored up version, be sure to serve it at an adults-only party… or keep it safe out of reach of the little ones who like their fruit. It’s a fun summer dish to serve, but it’s definitely not for the kids!

T he watermelon basket is one of the most popular and easy fruit carving presentations around.

1. First, cut a thin piece off the bottom of the watermelon so that it sits flat on a plate without rolling.
2. Make your design on the watermelon with a water marker and cut around until pieces separate easily.
3. Carefully cut the fruit away from the basket “handle” and slowly scrape away any remaining fruit with a spoon or melon baller.

- Cut a watermelon in half.
- Using a melon baller, ball half of the watermelon.
- Once you have balled half of the melon, scrap out all the remaining pieces of watermelon and drain out any watermelon liquid. Just like you do a pumpkin before carving it.
- Now lets make that empty watermelon look pretty and use it as a bowl. Using a pairing knife, cut small triangles around the entire cut edge of the watermelon.
- Rinse your grapes and raspberries and then pat dry with a paper towel.
- In a large bowl toss together: balled watermelon, grapes, raspberries, feta crumbles, and sliced mint.
- After you have all the ingredients mixed together, transfer to the hollowed out watermelon.
- Garnish with a few sprigs of uncut mint.
Can you make this Summer Watermelon Fruit Salad Ahead of Time?
Yes, yes you sure can! This fruit salad, (following this recipe) will last for 3-4 days when stored in your fridge. Now, itвЂ™s important to remember that this is based on this recipe and the fruit that I am using. Should you choose to make adjustments to the recipe using different fruit, this salad may not last as long or could last longer. Most fruit will keep for at least 3 days but that does depend how fresh the fruit was when you put it in the salad.
Tips for Storage:
- Room Temp Storage: This salad will stay fresh at room temperature for about 6 hours. After 6 hours you will want to move this watermelon fruit salad back into the fridge.
- Fridge Storage: In the fridge this recipe will last 3-4 days. I recommend wrapping the salad in plastic if storing on the watermelon bowl.
- Freezer Storage: While you wonвЂ™t want to put this salad in the freezer to eat as a fruit salad, you could still freezer the fruit. Say you serve this salad but you have some left over. DonвЂ™t toss out the leftover fruit, freeze the fruit! You can use that fruit later as toppings to your yogurt bowl, or your ice cream, or you can use them to make smoothies.
- Hot Outdoor Temps: Thinking of bringing this fruit salad to a picnic? That is a wonderful idea! This Fruit salad would be good outside for 2-6 hours depending on how hot it is. You can extend the life of this salad outdoors by placing the bottom of the blow in a bucket of ice to help keep it cool.

Take a bite out of summer fun with this friendly fruit shark. It’s sure to be a hit at baby showers and birthday parties alike. For the fruit basket filling, use any fresh, in-season fruits your guests will love. Cantaloupe, stone fruits like peaches and plums, and even orange segments will work well.

Place watermelon lengthwise on a cutting board. Slice off a 2-inch chunk from one end of the watermelon and discard. Using the flat end as a base, stand the watermelon up.
Starting at the tip, begin to cut the watermelon in half, stopping about two-thirds of the way down. (Don’t cut all the way to the cutting board.) Make a second cut, starting at one of the end points of the first cut, angling up and moving in a curved line toward the end point on the other side to create a large wedge. Remove the wedge, creating an open mouth for the “shark.” Reserve the wedge.
Using a vegetable peeler, slice off 1-inch-wide pieces of watermelon skin along edges of the mouth. Discard the watermelon skin. Using a small paring knife, cut triangular incisions along the top and bottom edges of the mouth, forming teeth.
Scoop out the inside of the watermelon, leaving 2 inches at the bottom, to form a bowl. Chop the scooped-out watermelon into chunks and reserve.
Cut a half-rainbow shape from the reserved watermelon wedge. Skewer the half-rainbow into the back of the watermelon, rind-side up, forming a fin.
Arrange blueberries and blackberries around the base of the watermelon. Fill the watermelon bowl with the reserved watermelon chunks, strawberries, raspberries and pineapple. Skewer blueberries on the sides of the watermelon to form eyes.

Our Chef’s Favorite Fresh Fruit Salad Recipes With Watermelon
Watermelon Mojito Salad
Nothing quite says Miami like a watermelon mojito salad which contains our city’s signature drink!
To make a watermelon mojito salad you’ll need:
- 3 cups of the melon, diced.
- 1/2 to 1 cup of cucumber. Make sure you dice and peel them first.
- 2 tablespoons of thinly sliced mint leaves.
- The zest from 2 limes.
- 1/4 of a cup of lime juice. You’ll likely need two limes to get this amount of lime juice.
- 1 tablespoon of avocado oil
- 1 pinch each of sea salt and black pepper
- A splash of your favorite rum, if you choose to make this watermelon salad with alcohol.
To make the watermelon mojito salad, first mix the melon, cucumber, and mint leaves in a large bowl. Next, use a small bowl to mix the other ingredients by shaking or stirring. Pour the lime and rum mixture over the watermelon mojito salad’s melon, cucumber, and mint leaf mixture and stir, then place in your serving dish of choice.
Fresh Watermelon Salad with Cucumber and Feta
Try this fruit dish with a Mediterranean twist! To start, you need the following ingredients:
- 5 cups of cubed, seedless melon.
- 1/2 cup of red-wine vinegar.
- 2 teaspoons of honey.
- 1/4 teaspoon each of salt and ground pepper.
- 1/4 cup of extra virgin olive oil.
- 1 chopped cucumber.
- 6 ounces of feta cheese. Make sure to cut them into cubes that are 3/4 of an inch in size.
- 1/2 cup of red onion, thinly sliced.
- 2 tablespoons of mint, chopped.
Follow these steps to make this watermelon salad:
- Whisk the vinegar, honey, mint, salt, and pepper together in a small bowl. As you’re whisking this mixture, gradually add in the extra-virgin olive oil.
- Combine the melon, cucumber, feta cheese, and onion in a large bowl. Stir in the 1/2 cup of vinaigrette very gently, then refrigerate for 20 minutes to 2 hours.
- Right before you serve, drizzle the vinegar mixture over the fruit, cucumber, and feta cheese. Then enjoy it.
- Red Fruit Dish
This is one of our favorite fresh fruit salad recipes with watermelon. It combines our favorite melon with raspberries and red seedless grapes or pitted cherries.
Here are the ingredients you’ll need for this watermelon salad recipe:
- 4 cups of our favorite summer melon, diced.
- 1/2 pint of raspberries
- 1 1/4 cup of seedless red grapes cut in halves or pitted cherries (or both!).
- 2 tablespoons of chopped purple basil.
Making this recipe is very easy. After you’ve prepared all the ingredients, simply mix them together gently. If you’d like, you can serve with yogurt.
Seven-Layer Fruit Dish
If you’re looking for aesthetically-pleasing fresh fruit salad recipes with watermelon, you need to try the seven-layer fruit salad. This watermelon salad recipe calls for:
- 2 cups of the summer melon, diced.
- 2 cups of halved blackberries.
- 2 cups of honeydew melon, diced.
- 2 cups of pineapple, diced.
- 2 cups of green grapes, cut into halves.
- 2 cups of quartered strawberries.
- 2 cups of cantaloupe, diced.
- 1/2 cup of orange juice.
- 1 tablespoon of lime juice.

Watermelon Salad Recipe with Cucumber and Orange
For our final watermelon salad suggestion, you’ll need:
- 4 cups of the summer melon cut into 3/4 inch chunks. You’ll likely need one small melon to achieve this quantity.
- 1 1/2 cups of Persian cucumbers, oblique-cut. This usually requires 3 cucumbers.
- 1 cup of navel orange sections. You’ll most likely need 2 oranges to achieve this.
- 1/3 cup of pitted and torn Castelvetrano olives.
- 1/4 of lemon juice (you’ll likely need 2 lemons).
- 2 tablespoons of chopped cilantro. If you’d like some cilantro for your garnish, you’ll need even more.
- 2 tablespoons of mint, chopped. Additional chopped mint will be needed if you’d like to add it to your garnish.
- 1 ounce of crumbled goat cheese (which equals about 1/4 cup).
- If desired, lemon zest.
To make this fresh watermelon salad, gently combine the fruit and cucumbers in a large bowl. Then, place the mixture on a large platter.
Next, stir everything else together in a small bow. Drizzle over the melon, orange, and cucumber platter. If desired, add extra cilantro and mint as a garnish.

Easy Recipe that Improves Memory and Brain Power
While this is probably not the recipe you want to prepare before a big exam, this is perfect for any picnic or outdoor get together. Its very easy to make as you’ll see in the video, and you get to offer a unique, edible platter with a variety of fruit for many different palates.
- 1 medium Watermelon
- 1 apple (any type)
- 1 cup grapes
- 4 strawberries
- 1. Outline the watermelon with a permanent marker or other tool that leaves prominent lines
- 2. Use a paring knife or other easy-to-handle knife to cut the lines you just drew with the marker.
- 3. Carve out the inside of the picnic basket handle.
- 4. Score the watermelon that remains in the bottom half of the picnic basket.
- 5. Scoop the scored watermelon into a medium sized bowl, leaving a watermelon wall in the middle of the picnic basket (acts as a divider for two different fruit salads)
- 6. Chop the apple and strawberries into preferred size.
- 7. Mix apple, strawberries, and grapes into a bowl.
- 8. Fill one side of the watermelon basket with the apple, strawberry, grape fruit salad.
- 9. Fill the other side of the watermelon basket with the watermelon that you scooped out.
- 10. Serve at a picnic or other outdoor event.

Your summer party will be the hit of the season when your guests “dive into” this incredible looking watermelon fruit basket! With all the goodness of healthy fruit and the eye catching appeal, you’ll make a big splash with this one!
What You’ll Need
- 1 oblong-shaped seedless watermelon
- 1 (4-serving-size) package blue gelatin, prepared in a small plastic container according to package directions
- Assorted cut-up fruit pieces
- Beach-themed items for decoration
- Gummy fish for garnish
What to Do
- Cut a 1/4-inch slice off the bottom of the watermelon to provide a stable base.
- Draw lines in a wave design, with a sharp pencil or thin marker, approximately halfway up and all the way around the watermelon. Cut the watermelon along those lines.
- Scoop out the flesh with an ice cream scoop or large spoon, and reserve for fruit salad.
- Create a water scene by placing the blue gelatin container in the watermelon bowl. Fill in around the “water” with fruit salad cut into fun shapes and balls.
- Arrange small, clean, non-toxic, new, small beach-themed toys and plastic dolls toward the edge of the watermelon bowl to create a beach scene. Garnish the sides with drink umbrellas and plastic palm tree swizzle sticks, and add gummy fish to the top of the salad and gelatin to complete the scene.
