How to make a watermelon smoothie

Watermelon – The trick to make a creamy watermelon smoothie is to freeze the watermelon and other fruits beforehand. You can chop a large melon, freeze all of it and keep using it to make the smoothie.

How to make a watermelon smoothie

Choose a ripe and juicy watermelon. The watermelon should be dark green in color and free of patches. It should feel heavy for its size.
Check for the splotch. Watermelon develops a splotch where they rest on the ground. When this splotch is creamy yellow, it’s ripe.
Tap the underbelly of the watermelon. A ripe one will have a deep hollow sound, which means it is juicy. Under-ripe or over-ripe melons will sound dull.

How to make a watermelon smoothie

To freeze watermelon, peel it and cut it into small chunks of about ½ inch square.
Line a cookie sheet with wax paper. Place the fresh-cut watermelon on the cookie sheet in a single layer.
Cover them with plastic wrap and flash freeze for about an hour. Gather the pieces and freeze them in a ziplock bag for up to 3 months.
You can also freeze the watermelon in a 3-cup portion for one batch of smoothies.

Strawberries – Strawberries add to the color and a tangy-sweet taste that complements the taste of watermelon really well. Check out my post on how to freeze strawberries when they are in season and use them year-round.

Milk & Yogurt – To add creaminess to the smoothie, we will use vanilla Greek yogurt and whole milk. You can also use unflavored Greek yogurt, but I feel vanilla adds a delicious flavor and sweetness that makes the smoothie even more delicious.

You can opt for non-dairy milk and yogurt options to make a vegan strawberry watermelon smoothie. Adding coconut water or orange juice in place of milk is also a great option for a cooling and refreshing smoothie.

Maple Syrup – Add in some sweetness with maple syrup, which can be substituted with honey (not vegan) or stevia too. You can also add a ripe frozen banana which will not only make the smoothie sweeter but also creamier.

Fresh Mint Leaves – Lastly, add in some fresh mint leaves for a beautiful refreshing flavor. Even fresh basil leaves work great in this smoothie.

You can also add protein powder, chia seeds, hemp seeds, etc to make it even more nutritious.

How To Make Watermelon Smoothie

Place 3 cups (16 oz) frozen watermelon, 1 cup (6 oz) frozen strawberries, ½ cup vanilla Greek yogurt, ½ tablespoon maple syrup, ½ cup whole milk, and ¼ cup mint leaves (or basil) in the jar of a high-speed blender.

Note – If the watermelon and strawberries are too hard, thaw them for 5 minutes to ease the blending process.

How to make a watermelon smoothie

Blend until smooth, adding more water as needed if the smoothie is too thick.

Taste and add additional maple syrup if you’d like the smoothie sweeter. Garnish with a wedge of watermelon and a sprig of mint and serve immediately.

Frequently Asked Questions

To make it vegan, skip adding the vanilla Greek yogurt and milk and substitute them with the non-dairy yogurt and milk options. All the other ingredients used are vegan-friendly.

Watermelon goes really well with fruits such as banana, strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, mango, pineapple, etc. I prefer to add strawberries rather than any other fruit, as it doesn’t overpower the taste of watermelon and makes it shine in this smoothie recipe.

Storage Suggestions

Smoothies taste the best when served fresh, and the same goes with this watermelon smoothie too. You can prep ahead – cut and freeze the fruits which take most of the time. Once the prep is done, it hardly takes 2 minutes to blend the ingredients together.

Leftovers can be stored in a mason jar or a covered glass jar in the refrigerator and should be consumed within a day. Do not forget to stir it well before consuming it.

To freeze, pour the smoothie into airtight freezer-safe jars or containers, and freeze for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator before serving.

There is no fruit like watermelon that screams summer and keeps you cool on hot sunny days.

Like any watermelon aficionado, I experimented with countless watermelon recipes from watermelon juice to summer fruit cakes.

Out of all, hands-down, the best and repeat-worthy one is this watermelon smoothie.

It’s the epitome of a summer drink that’s healthy, hydrating, and simply, wonderfully delicious.

And quite possibly, it’s the most refreshing smoothie recipe you’ll ever make.

Luckily, it’s also really simple and easy to put together with minimum ingredients.

With a dash of lemon juice and a few springs of mint leaves, you’ll crave this smoothie at the poolside all summer long.

How to Make a Watermelon Smoothie

Watermelon makes such a hydrating drink.

It has high water content making this summer fruit extra juicy and full of water.

Rather than creamy texture, many fruits like bananas give, watermelon adds an icy, slushy-like texture.

And I adore and crave the lightness during the summer.

With additions of lemon and mints, this watermelon smoothie is something between a fruity mint tea and cold slushy.

What’s more, it only requires four simple ingredients.

It’s made with real simple ingredients.

Whether you are looking for another way to cool you down on a hot day or hydrate after a run, this is the watermelon smoothie you’ll want to make again and again.
