I heard a story recently about a little boy who was afraid of gorillas.

In his fear, the little boy convinced himself that a gorilla lived underneath his bed… and that the gorilla would eat him when he slept! So night after night, the little boy slept with his blankets over his head, believing that if the gorilla couldn’t see him, he wouldn’t eat him.

And even though that little boy would get very hot and sweaty while under his covers, he continued to sleep that way night after night. He just knew that keeping those covers over his head would keep the gorilla from eating him while he was sleeping!

Of course this little boy grew up and got over his fear of gorillas. But when you think about it, don’t you and I act exactly like this little boy when we decide to worry? Because the fact is, we usually worry about things that really aren’t there!

In our own fear and lack of faith, we irrationally anticipate the worst. And as a result, we start to sweat and panic — all because of something that never really ends up coming to pass!

In the book of Proverbs, Solomon likens worry and anxiety to a weight… a weight that “weighs a man down” (12:25). And I would like you to take some time to think about what “gorillas” in your life are weighing you down.

You know, as a father, grandfather, and now great-grandfather, I can tell you — there’s plenty in life to worry about. But you know what? As believers, Scripture doesn’t give us the option to worry. Nowhere in the Bible does it give us permission to fret.

In fact, Jesus asks us in Luke 12:25-26, “Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life? Since you cannot do this very little thing, why do you worry about the rest?”

If you struggle with the issue of worry in your life today (and who doesn’t from time to time?), I want to give you some encouragement. I want to help show you how to stop worrying and really start living!

As you know, worrying involves your thought life. So I want you to think about your thought life as a corral. Everything within that corral is what you know to be true. But as we go through life, it’s easy to let our thoughts wander out of the corral and into the territory of worry and anxiety.

That’s why you and I have to build strong fences around the corral of our thought life! And how do we do build these fences? With the truth of the Word of God. The only way to stop worry dead in its tracks is to attack it with Scripture.

At the end of this article, I’ve listed some very helpful Bible verses that speak directly to the subject of worry. And as you read these verses, I encourage you to commit each one to memory — to start “building fences” around your mind.

A great passage to begin with is one that is probably very familiar to you: Philippians 4:6-8. It says the following:

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable — if anything is excellent or praiseworthy — think about such things.

Whenever your mind is tempted to jump the fence and start to worry, say this verse aloud or to yourself. You may even have to repeat it over and over again. Eventually, the truth of God’s Word will redirect your thinking… and you’ll learn to live without the weight of worry tying you down!

Friend, you can stop worrying and really start living. And it’s my prayer that God will encourage your heart with this promise today!

Dale Carnegie also talks about the top insurance salesman in the country. He wasn’t always at the top though and was struggling until he asked himself the following questions:

A Simple Set of Questions to Eliminate Worry

Frank Bettger, one of the top insurance salesmen in America, used these questions to reduce his worries and multiply his income.

Early in his career Bettger began to despise his work and felt discouraged. He was working too much and was burning out.
Frank was always either in meetings or calling out prospects and wasn’t having much success at all.
Then, one day, he wrote down and answered these questions:

  1. What is the problem?
  2. What is the cause of the problem?
  3. What are all the possible solutions?
  4. What is the best solution?

3. How to break the worry habit before it breaks you

  1. Stay busy: no free time, no time to worry (my note: don’t do this as Brene Brown explains)
  2. Don’t allow small things to get in your way
  3. Understand numbers: chances of catastrophic events are slim
  4. What you cannot change is not worth worrying about
  5. Put a stop loss order in your life: after a certain threshold, you move and that’s it
  6. Stop worrying about the past. It’s useless

4. A mental attitude for peace and happiness

  1. Think and act joyfully and you’ll be joyful
  2. Thinking about what we don’t like is poisonous: don’t waste a minute with people you don’t like
  3. Don’t expect gratitude and you will not be disappointed by the lack of it
  4. Focus and count your blessings, not your troubles
  5. Be yourself and don’t try to copy others
  6. Do the best with your losses. Profit from them. When life give you lemons, make a lemonade
  7. Help others to help yourself

5. The perfect way to conquer worry

Dale Carnegie suggests that believing in a greater being, in God, and praying, is a great antidote for worry.

6. How to keep from worrying about criticism

  1. Unfair criticism is often a compliment: it means you have raised envy
  2. Grow a thicker skin: you’ll be criticized anyway. Your job is to do your best, not to avoid criticism
  3. Criticize yourself first and then ask for more criticism: it’s the best way to grow

7. How to prevent fatigue and worry and keep energy and spirits high

Rest is important, says Carnegie.

Churchill took two naps a day during WWII. Make sure you get enough rest as well.

At work, clear your desk of all papers, because the mess around you translates into mental mess and stress.
Then prioritize and execute (a mantra of Extreme Ownership).

All the tips make sense, but they’re also common sense.
What would have been more useful are all the nitty gritty of how to actually do it. I believe guys like Tony Robbins do a better job at that.

  • Too Busy To Worry… Really?

The suggestion to get too busy to worry is not only scientifically unfounded, but counterproductive. It doesn’t address the root cause.

It’s like telling the hangover patient to keep drinking and the headache will go away. Better drinking water instead.
The hang over will take more time to heal, but it addresses the root causes.

“How to Stop Worrying and Start Living” is one of the grandfathers of the self help books.

It has sold 6 million copies, and if Nassim Taleb is right when he says the longer something remains successful, the better it is, then you can’t go wrong with this old classic.

The content is indeed top notch, and most of it is evergreen -as Ray Dalio said, great is better than new-.

However, don’t miss out on new contemporary authors because neuroscience has developed a lot since Carnegie and can teach us a lot.

When I first started out writing blog, it took me more than 3 months to publish my first post. Just because I was worrying if anybody is going to like it or not.

Then I accepted that the worst would be nobody gonna read my posts. And started out writing for my own growth.

For example, if you feel worried when asked to speak on stage in front of a big crowd.

You may create a ton of imaginings in your head about all the bad that will happen to you. But in reality, worst will be that some people may leave without listening. That’s all.

They are not going to shot you in the head.

Clearly define the worst outcome, and you’ll soon start to realize how ridiculous and stupid most of your worries are.

Think if today is your last day on earth. Will you still be worrying about your lesser grades, outdated phone, or job promotion.

Obviously NO. You would enjoy whatever you have. You will actually value life and that’s all which is needed.

3- Day Tight Compartments

  • In order to prevent worry from creeping back into your life, live in day-tight compartments.
  • In the early 1900s large ocean vessels were designed so that if one part gets flooded other could be sealed off by watertight iron doors which would prevent the ship from sinking.
  • This concept can also be applied to your life.
  • Act like the captain of your life ship who has the ability to press a button and shut the iron doors on today’s compartment.
  • Thus preventing the fears of yesterday and the worries of tomorrow from flooding into your mind.
  • To activate your iron doors do two things-
    1. First, wake up every morning and imagine you’re living a new life. Imagine your old self had died last night and your worries and regrets died with them and this morning is the first day of the rest of your life.
    2. Then tell yourself if I take care of today, tomorrow will take care of itself.

  • Sitting on the couch and worrying and procrastinating about things has nothing to do with being busy.

  • Simply get busy with what you are passionate about and your brain simply won’t even have the time to worry.

How to stop worrying and start living

For much of my life I was quite the worrier. I was under the impression that if I worried about all the bad things that could happen, I would never have a bad surprise. While technically my thought process was accurate, there were three major downsides with my line of thinking:

1. Worrying caused a lot of mental stress that would turn into physical stress. After a period of worrying, my shoulders and neck would be sore and tight. I would then worry about my physical distress which just made me worry even more!

2. By thinking about what could go wrong, I was subconsciously setting myself up to achieve the outcome I didn’t want. Jack Canfield refers to this as negative goal-setting.

3. Worrying puts us out of alignment with God. If we are busy worrying about what could go wrong, we are less likely to notice God given us solutions to our problems.

The solution to worrying? Stop worrying. Worrying simply adds on more to the problem you already have. Instead, focus on a possible solution. For example, when I have to travel to a place I haven’t been to before, I visualize making it there safely and take steps that help me do so (i.e. arriving at the airport early and paying attention to my surroundings). I also say a prayer and ask God for guidance. I have found that when I do, God will find a way of getting an answer back to me in one form or another. The best part when you stop worrying is that you enjoy life more!

How do you stop worrying from sucking your energy and ruining your life? Well, it’s quite easy. The magic solution is to stop worrying.

Well it may seem downright impossible. After all, worrying comes naturally. It’s what humans do.

That worry bug will be persistent. So every time it bites you, crush it. All you need is some practice, a dash of determination and a pinch of commitment.

I used to believe that worrying was my way of problem-solving. I would spend countless hours working through every scenario. (My problem-solving usually involved backup plans in case the first plan didn’t pan out.)

Well, this was endlessly exhausting. I always ended up with tight knots in my stomach. And guess what?

That problem I was so eager to solve using the power of my worrying never materialized.

But after many tight knotted, sleepless nights, it hit me.

I should concentrate on the worries that I could solve, not the ones I had zero control over.

Man, that whittled my list down significantly.

Here’s how you can tell if a worry is something you can solve. Start by asking yourself these questions.

Step #1: Is The Problem Solvable?

Is the problem something that is currently happening, or are you dealing with imaginary scenarios?

What I mean is, are you asking yourself what if this happens or what if that happens?

If the problem is an imaginary scenario, on a scale of one to ten, how likely is it to happen? Be honest.

Here’s one of my past worries: What if I get cancer?

Now on a scale from 1 to 10, how likely is this to happen?

What can you do to solve the problem, prepare for any fallout? Is the situation out of your control?

Ok, now it’s time to take action. Make a list of your current nagging worry scenarios. Let go of perfectionism while making this list.

Now that you’ve made the list, think of ways you can go about solving the problem.

Example: Maybe you’re worried that you may not be able to pay the rent next month. You sit down and plan a course of action that might involve taking a second job to supplement your income. Or maybe you may want to look at planning a monthly budget.

Taking action like this will empower you, sharpen your problem solving skills, and send worry ducking for cover.

Step #2: Set Time Aside to Worry

– Make worrying a regularly scheduled event. Say every afternoon from 2:00 – 2:15.

– Buy a pocket-sized memo pad and carry it around with you everywhere you go.

– Every time an anxious thought pops into your mind write it down and say aloud to yourself, “I’ll worry about this at 2:00 this afternoon (or whatever time you select).

– When the time arrives, get out your memo pad and set a timer.

– Go down your list and worry away.

– When the timer goes off up, put away the memo pad.

– Are there still items on the list? That’s ok; you can continue where you left of the following day at your designated worrying time.

Step #3: Accept Uncertainty

For a long time, the thought of being comfortable with uncertainty was extremely anxiety producing. To be honest, the concept seemed utterly ludicrous.

I needed to know what the future held for me.

Worrying made me feel safe in a way. It made me feel like I was doing something, taking control of my life, I guess.

But worrying, making up doomsday scenarios and “planning” for the worst didn’t make life any more predictable.

It wasn’t until I learned to challenge my negative, doomsday thoughts that I began to feel empowered and less anxious about my future.

You too can gain the power to accept uncertainty by challenging negative thoughts before they turn into worry.

Step #4: Challenge Thoughts that Feed Worry and Anxiety

Part of chronic worrying is seeing the world as more dangerous than it is.

You might automatically believe that the worst will happen despite not having any proof. This is distorted thinking that holds you back from taking reasonable risks and ultimately living life to the fullest.

The simple answer is to retrain your brain.

True, it’s easier said than done. But it’s totally doable.

Get a pen and paper, or go ahead and open a word processing program if you prefer.

Now, answer these questions:

1. What evidence do you have that the thought is true or untrue?

2. What’s the possibility that this situation will actually happen?

3. Is this thought/worry solvable? If so, come up with a game plan and take action?

4. Get out of your head for a moment.

What would you say to a friend with this worry? Pretend you’re helping someone else with this problem.

Sometimes when you try to help someone else the answers are made clearer.

A study states that keeping a worry journal helps reduce symptoms of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). (Out of the 51 study participants most saw a reduction in their symptoms as they realized that many of their worries didn’t materialize.)

Here are a couple of extra tips for clobbering those worry bugs.

Take Note of How Others Affect You

You know the saying: Laughter is contagious? Well, the same goes for emotions, especially stress and anxiety.

Being around negative people who bring you down and make you anxious will feed your worries and fears. Limit the amount of time you spend with negative people.

This can be especially difficult if the individual is a family member. In this case, how about declaring certain topics off limits.

Choose your friends and confidants wisely. It’s great to have people you can confide it. But your private thoughts are sacred and shouldn’t be shared with just anyone. Make sure the person with whom you share personal thoughts and feelings with is trustworthy.

Develop A Mindfulness Mentality

Learning to focus your mind in the present makes it easier to let go of worrying thoughts. Practicing mindfulness meditation is a great way of centering and calming your mind. All the while helping to break the cycle of worry and fear.

Don’t expect to be an ex-worrier overnight. It takes time to develop this skill.
