You don’t need a travel budget to find new backgrounds for your photos. See how graphic artist Erica Larson uses Adobe Photoshop to place the subject of a photo in an entirely new environment.

How to use adobe photoshop

Erica Larson dreams up inspired designs every day as an Associate Creative Director on the Adobe Studio team. She makes stuff that makes others want to make stuff.

How to use adobe photoshop

From blank walls to lush gardens, take your photos on a journey. The steps are written out below this one-minute video.

Before you start.

Need images? Use these sample images or practice with your own.

Step 1: Hide the wall

Larson’s first step is hiding the plain gray wall. Use the Quick Selection tool to select just the shape of the model. Choose Select Subject and then choose Select And Mask to enter the Select And Mask workspace.

How to use adobe photoshop

Step 2: Remove rough spots

In the Properties panel of the Select And Mask workspace, move the Shift Edge slider to the left to refine the edges of the selection, and choose Output To Selection. Note: when leaving Select And Mask, the original background comes back; you’ll fix this in the next step.

How to use adobe photoshop

Step 3: Delete the wall

With the model layer selected, click on the Add Layer Mask icon. Since Larson had output the model as a selection from the Select And Mask workspace, Photoshop masked (or hid) anything that was not selected so the gray wall disappeared and the selected model remained.

How to use adobe photoshop

Step 4: Create a consistent look

Larson wanted to match the lighting of the model with that of the background. To do this, duplicate the New Background layer, move it above the model layer, and choose Filter > Blur > Average. Option-click (or alt-click) between the green layer and the model layer to create a clipping mask.

How to use adobe photoshop

Step 5: Add a new background

With the green layer selected, set the Blend Mode to Soft Light, and reduce the Opacity setting. Larson applied a dark blue Solid Color adjustment layer to give each of the layers below it a finishing color cast. Set the Blend Mode to Soft Light and also reduce the adjustment layer’s Opacity setting.

Whether you’re having fun on social media or fixing a group photo, Photoshop face swaps can give your pictures a new look.

How to use adobe photoshop

Swap faces and capture everyone’s best look.

Sometimes a photo is perfect, except for that one friend’s face. They might be blinking or making a funny face, ruining an otherwise amazing shot. But if you have another photo of them, you can swap out a blinking face for a warm smile. A face swap is a great way to fix a family photo, for example — an edit photographers need to make all the time.

Even if you’ve never seen what’s trending on social networks like Snapchat you’ve probably seen selfie face swaps, face swap memes, or even mind-boggling celebrity deepfakes, fake videos of well-known figures. Novelty face swap apps are a dime a dozen on Android and iOS, but face swaps can look better than those done on a free app for iPad or on smartphones. With Photoshop, no one will know your sister didn’t smile for the family photos. There are several methods for doing a professional-level face swap with Adobe products.

Face swapping with mask layers.

If you have photos of similar size and composition, it’s easy to layer them on top of each other in Photoshop for a basic face swap. Just follow these steps:

Set the face you want to swap in as a bottom layer, and the picture with the face to be replaced as the top layer.

Line up the faces in the two pictures. Use the Auto-Align feature and make sure that the two figures you want to join together roughly align.

Add a white mask layer onto the top. Set the opacity to 100%.

Select the Brush tool. Set the opacity to 100%. A softer brush style tends to work well for this kind of work.

Using the black brush, paint over the face you want to swap out on the mask layer. As you paint over the mask layer, the face beneath it will show through in real time.

This method works with pictures that are roughly the same size and composition. Sometimes, though, you want something a bit more complex, such as a cat face swap or trying your hand at a new face swap meme. For those moments, you’ll need to explore a different set of Photoshop skills.

Face swapping with Object Selection.

Photoshop’s Object Selection tool lets you grab whatever you like from a photo. You can use it to grab a single feature, like an eye, a nose, or an entire face or head. Using the Object Selection tool you can cut out the face you want to swap into an image. When you do, save it as its own layer.

How to use adobe photoshop

It’s a good idea to work with a face that’s larger than the face you’re trying to swap out. It’s easier to fit a large face over a small one. Also, with a larger, higher-resolution face you won’t have to deal with distortions from pixelation as a result of resizing.

Drag the face you’re swapping onto the head you’re using, and then gradually resize and line up the features. Turn down the opacity in the face layer so you can see the original features underneath the face you’re using. Match the eyes, nose, and mouth, and gradually move the new face over the original. Once you have it placed to your liking, adjust the opacity back to 100%. The new face should be placed as naturally as possible over the old one.

Blending and color-correcting a face swap.

The lighting and skin tones of people’s faces can vary wildly, and sometimes one person’s look can change across different photos. You’ll almost certainly have to correct for subtle differences between the two photos if you want your face swap to look professional.

Match the multiple skin tones with the Match Color feature (Image › Adjustments › Match Color), using whichever image you want to match colors from. Gradually adjust colors to match the skin tones together. Use the Blur tool to match the amount of blur on the head and face, and use Auto-Blend Layers with Seamless Tones and Colors selected to merge the face and body layer together.

Artists have added color to photos since the earliest days of photography. Explore how to colorize old photos with Adobe Photoshop.

How to use adobe photoshop

Why add color?

People seek realism in their photos. They want to capture life, not just in light and shadow, but also in full color. “When you see something in color, there’s definitely an immediacy. It elicits an emotional response, and people relate to it in a way they couldn’t before,” says Jordan Lloyd, professional photo colorist.

In the 19th century most photographs were monochromatic, so people hand-colored them, often for purely aesthetic reasons. Photos with color just looked nicer on the mantle. Contemporary artists still add color for those reasons. Tina Tryforos, artist and teacher, began hand-coloring photos early in her career before going digital. Painting by hand, she worked with a limited color palette, and she still prefers that simplicity. “I really like the more painterly, nostalgic look, rather than trying to make it look accurate,” she says.

Photographer Kenton Waltz loves colorizing black-and-white photos because he can choose which colors to include in an image and which to leave out. “The elegance of the photo is the simplicity of the color,” he says. “You appreciate the quality of light and dark.”

The first steps to colorize images.

Whatever your motivation for colorizing, the basics are generally the same.

1. Create a new layer.

Get in the habit of creating a new layer before you touch your source image, so you always have the original. Then you can use layer masks to add the right colors to every part of the image.

If you’re working with an old photo, the first thing you should do is clean up the image. You can do this easily by making slight adjustments to the Radius and Threshold levels until the little flecks are gone. If that doesn’t remove all of them, you can always create a layer mask to paint over any remaining flaws.

3. Neutralize the color and adjust the contrast.

If the photo is sepia-toned, add a Black & White adjustment layer to neutralize the color and a Levels adjustment layer to fix the contrast.

A few (of the many) techniques for adding color.

Option A: Use the brush with Solid Color adjustment layers.

This method involves adding a Solid Color adjustment layer for every aspect of the photo you want to paint. Change the blending mode to Color so the details of the original image show through the paint. Invert the layer mask to black and use the brush to paint over the part of the image you want to colorize.

How to use adobe photoshop

Option B: Use the Quick Selection tool with Solid Color layers.

Once you’ve created a new layer, use the Quick Selection tool to outline the area you want to color. You might need to zoom in to fix any areas selected accidentally. Click the Refine Edge button to smooth the edges of your selection. (The Refine Edge tool is also great for colorizing fine details like hair.) Then add a new Solid Color Fill layer, choose the color, and set the blend mode to Color. Then you can simply adjust the color until it looks right. Repeat this process for each element in the image. Quick Mask mode can help you quickly remove areas you don’t want to paint (like buttons or eyes) inside of a larger selection.

How to use adobe photoshop

You can also add color by creating a Curve adjustment layer. Find the color you want by adjusting the cyan, magenta, and yellow curves, and then use the brush to paint. Create a new layer for each color.

How to use adobe photoshop

A few tips before you begin.

Learn keyboard shortcuts.

Save yourself hours by memorizing these keyboard shortcuts for the brush and painting tools in Adobe Photoshop.

Try a graphics tablet.

Every artist has their preferred style of work. Tryforos uses a trackpad, as she has throughout her career, which she says works fine if you have a large screen. If you’re doing a lot of colorization, Lloyd recommends using a tablet. As photographer Martin Evening famously wrote, “Once you have experienced working with a pen, using the mouse is like trying to draw while wearing boxing gloves.”

Do some research.

If you want to make educated guesses about the colors the photographer saw through the viewfinder, do some digging. For his historical photos, Jordan Lloyd consults with experts on everything from soft-drink history to Egyptology to pulp fiction from 1920 to 1950. When you do have to guess, Lloyd says, “if it doesn’t look right, it probably isn’t right. Winston Churchill did not wear a purple jacket.”

Cultivate patience.

Colorization is a time-consuming, labor-intensive process. Realistically capturing undertones in skin is especially difficult. You may have to add subtle layers of pink, orange, yellow, or blue. Experts recommend finding a color photo featuring similar skin tones to use as a reference.

There are abundant online tutorials to help you learn how to colorize photos. “It’s actually a low barrier to entry,” Lloyd says. “Find the right photograph, follow the technique, and you’ll have a pretty good result. Beyond that, it’s just a case of experimenting.”

How do you know you’re done? “When all the bits have been filled,” Lloyd says.

Adobe Photoshop is perhaps the most popular photo editing and graphic design software. Part of the Adobe Creative Suite, it has grown considerably over the years. Now, it’s more sophisticated and convenient to use than ever before.

A lot of people still think it’s merely a graphic design tool. It can do much more than that and is used in many different industries across the world. Here are some of the popular ways people use Adobe Photoshop:

Fixing Old Photos

Fixing old photographs and colorizing them is a highly time-consuming task. While you’re fixing the photo, you don’t want to alter any details. Many historians rely on the skills of Adobe Photoshop experts to bring old images back to life.

Photoshop has specific tools like the patch tool that can help fix marks and smudges in the real photos. Similarly, you can overlay color layers on top of the different layers in the photos. Once you apply the differentiate effect, the color details of the layer become visible, but now with the colors.

A lot of people have used Photoshop to add colors to historic black and white images.

Photoshop is also a big part of video making. A lot of the graphics we see in videos on YouTube and other social media platforms have been created in Photoshop.

Do you know how some people are looking great in their videos like they do in their pictures? It’s all Photoshop’s magic.

With tablets and styluses, electronic drawing has become a popular hobby. Even professional artists and illustrators who were drawing manually on paper are switching to drawing on tablets. It’s so convenient, and the results are simply amazing.

Adobe Photoshop’s mobile app is allowing artists to express their creativity in many ways. It makes it easy to draw freehand and share that work with the world. If you have a touchscreen laptop like Microsoft Surface, you can draw with a pen on those too using this amazing software.

The textile and fashion industry heavily relies on Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator to create patterns, graphics, and prints for clothing. Those prints you see on t-shirts typically are designed in Adobe Photoshop first.

Similarly, textile prints are also designed in Adobe Photoshop. It has the right tools to create large patterns easily. Patterns are all about repetition, and Photoshop does that beautifully and accurately.

Web Design

You might think what has Photoshop to do with web design? A lot! The panels, buttons, borders, and many other design elements are often designed in Photoshop. It allows UX designers to create flawless web layouts.

Photoshop is all the more instrumental for custom websites where everything is designed and coded from scratch. With the latest versions of Photoshop, many tools and layouts are geared specifically towards web design.

Common Photoshop Errors

No matter what purpose you’re using Photoshop for, you’re bound to run into errors. If you have a slow running Photoshop, chances are your machine doesn’t have enough resources to support it.

Make sure you have ample memory and CPU power to run Photoshop. It also helps if you just use Photoshop and close other applications.

Another common error is the amtlib.dll error. It could be the file is missing or corrupted. This file was created by Adobe and is necessary for running their applications.

If you receive this error, there are a few ways to fix this issue:

  1. Run antivirus to see if your PC has any virus or malware that may have affected the file. Once you’ve run the scan and the antivirus reports fixing issues, try running Adobe Photoshop again.
  2. If the error persists, and you’re sure the file is there in your PC system folders, you can try System File Checker. Open Windows Command Prompt and type ‘sfs/scannow,.’ Once the scan is complete, restart the PC and launch Adobe Photoshop again.
  3. Lastly, you can download amtlib.dll file from DLLDownloads. It’s a safe source for common DLL files that can resolve the missing or corrupted DLL file issue. Make sure to download the right version according to your Windows (32-bit or 64-bit).

Adobe Photoshop is a great tool when it comes to graphic design or picture editing. However, it’s much more versatile than those two main applications. It’s a heavy software that utilizes a lot of resources so the performance is dependent on your machine too.

How to use adobe photoshop

Adobe has been adding machine-learning and AI-powered features to Photoshop and Photoshop Lightroom. In March 2021, Adobe added “Super Resolution“—a way to enhance missing details in lower resolution files. Here’s how to use it.

What Does Super Resolution Do?

Super Resolution uses Adobe’s AI platform, Adobe Sensei, to double the horizontal and vertical resolution of an image. It quadruples the number of pixels so, in effect, it takes a 12-megapixel photo and turns it into a 48-megapixel photo.

Super Resolution is an evolution of Enhance Details, another machine learning filter that reduces image artifacts and enhances small details in your RAW photos—without changing the resolution.

In other words, Super Resolution makes the file big—and, if you’re using RAW files, Enhance Details makes sure it looks good. It still, however, works on other file types like JPEG, PNG, and TIFF.

Whatever file type you use, Super Resolution will convert it into a .DNG RAW file.

How to Use Adobe’s Super Resolution

Super Resolution isn’t a Photoshop feature: it’s an Adobe Camera RAW (ACR) feature.

Now, ACR is built into Photoshop and it’s what does all the image processing under the hood in Lightroom, but it’s technically separate which is why finding Super Resolution can be slightly tricky.

How to Open a Photo in Camera RAW

To use Super Resolution, you need to open the image in an ACR-powered editor. There are a few ways to do this:

  • If you use Lightroom, just open any image in your library in the Develop module.
  • If you use Photoshop and want to edit a RAW file, open the file as normal. ACR will open before the regular Photoshop editor.
  • If you use Photoshop and want to edit a non-RAW file, open Adobe Bridge and navigate to the file. Right-click and select “Open in Camera RAW”

Note: As of the time of publication, Lightroom hasn’t been updated to support Super Resolution, however, Adobe says it’s coming very shortly and it is available for Photoshop.

How to use adobe photoshop

How to Apply Super Resolution

First, open the image you want to edit in an ACR editor.

How to use adobe photoshop

Right-click anywhere on the image and select “Enhance”.

How to use adobe photoshop

Check “Super Resolution” and you can see the effect in the “Preview” box.

If you like it, click “Enhance” and let ACR do its thing. It’ll take a few moments.

How to use adobe photoshop

Once it’s done, you will have a duplicate file called something like “FileName-Enhanced.dng (2 of 2)” open as well. It will have twice the vertical and horizontal resolution of the original. (Up to 500-megapixels.)

What Is Super Resolution Good For?

Super Resolution uses machine learning to quadruple the resolution of your images better than existing algorithms. You can see some more comparisons on Adobe’s blog post announcing the feature.

However, there are still only a limited number of situations where this is useful. If you’re just uploading images to Instagram and Facebook, for example, it’s unlikely to have any effect. Where Super Resolution shows the most promise is:

  • Up-sizing older images and tightly cropped photos so you can make better prints.
  • Enhancing details in images you need to crop really tightly.

Otherwise, Super Resolution is a cool and interesting application of machine learning—but it’s not something you need to do for every photo you take.

How to use adobe photoshopAn example Adobe uses to show how much better Super Resolution is. Adobe
