1. Start their days early.

It’s not that passionate people don’t enjoy sleeping – they do. It’s just that once they’re up, they get excited about the work ahead of them. Just as the passionate get excited, they also can come off as very moody. They go from happy and excited to pissed off and miserable. Because they are passionate, they are much more emotionally connected to whatever it is they are doing – so when things go well, the world is a beautiful place, but when things go awry, sh*t gets real very quickly.

5. Willing to risk more and put more on the line.

If you’re passionate, you have a clear understanding of what your purpose in life is – if only your purpose for that very moment. For this reason, you give much less importance to other things. Therefore you’re willing to risk more for the thing(s) that you find most important, that you are most passionate about. Those that are passionate are much more willing to give up things that don’t fall in their scope of passion.

6. Devote their lives to their dreams.

Life is filled with things worth doing and things not worth doing. That which we are most passionate about is what we believe to be worthwhile, everything else seems to be wasteful and lacking. Passionate individuals gradually gravitate towards their passions and away from the rest that life has to offer. They know what will make them happy and are willing to ignore the rest.

People say that it isn’t good to bring work home. However, for the most passionate, work is home. It’s clear that lifelong learning has become important in many industries. In this article, Pierre Vandergheynst and Isabelle Vonèche Cardia of the École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne in Switzerland referred to it as “a passport to success” and predicted that a model of continuous learning could even surpass traditional education routes in the future.

“If lifelong learning was to become a priority and the new norm, diplomas, just like passports, could be revalidated periodically,” they wrote. “A time-determined revalidation would ease administration for everybody. 1. Unleash Student Involvement: Turn Any Project Into a Passion Project

Look at Ronald J. Bonsetter’s “Inquiry as an Evolutionary Process” chart below. See how student-led inquiry gives students more of a decision-making role in the project?

Some teachers are afraid that, by giving students too much freedom, they won’t meet standards. First, share the standards with your students. Second, let students propose an inquiry-based project to meet the standards. This empowers student choice.

Teachers will need to engage with students. Students will need coaching. They’ll need advice as they create their final product. Rubrics can help them stay on track, but teacher involvement is essential.

All projects are not alike. A teacher-directed, hands-on project can be as unexciting as an old-fashioned worksheet. Passion projects inspire curiosity and interest while still meeting standards.

2. Make Time to Create: Schedule Genius Hour, 20 Percent Time

Many classroom best practices are circulating around Genius Hour and 20 Percent Time. In my classroom, I’ve learned to give students choices and help them set goals. By using a tool like Trello, I’m able to coach and track student work.

Don’t have an hour? There are other ways to foster a time to create and innovate. Some schools have puzzles or tools laid out in a certain place and change them out each week. Others issue a design challenge and let students invent ways to meet the challenge.

I’ve found that great Genius Hour work revolves around problem solving or creating. Genius Hour is not recess or free play. It can help students reflect, incorporate the scientific method, provide materials and tools to spark creativity, and deliver an audience for finished student work.

3. Supply Creation and Innovation: Create a Makerspace or FabLab

Some libraries are putting a makerspace in their learning commons. STEM labs, STEAM labs, and FabLabs are other ways to create places for making. Other schools have classes around making, robotics, or design challenges.

In my opinion, every school board and parent should be asking these three questions:

  1. Where is the makerspace in this school?
  2. Who has access?
  3. How often?

A well-used makerspace means that students are inventing and creating. A makerspace might be in a corner or in a full classroom, but it should be somewhere.

4. Spark Technology Innovation: Create an Online Student Makerspace

Let’s discuss the ignored place for a makerspace: online. Why do teachers neglect one of the easiest places to create a makerspace? An online makerspace can be a web page, blog post, shared document, or anywhere.

As you assemble this virtual creativity destination, include tools and apps to complete various projects by category, such as image editing, presentation, collaboration, drawing, cartooning — you name it. Students and teachers might not be using these tools yet because they don’t know what’s available. You can change that by sharing the makerspace with everyone.

A great way to start assembling your online makerspace is to have students do it. They can research different tools, test them, and add the ones that they think will work in this online environment.

Tip: When assigning a project, never require a specific tool (unless you’re teaching it). Instead, tell your students, “Create the multimedia artifact of your choice” or “Create a spreadsheet in the software of your choice.”

5. Know Your Students: Empower Student Interests and Dreams

Help students be social entrepreneurs. Help them map their heartbreak. Join the #choose2matter movement and connect your classroom with other students who want to make a difference in the world. Survey your students’ interests at the beginning of the year. Create projects where they share their dreams with you and the class.

The better you know your students, the better you’ll know how to teach them.

Want your students excited about learning? Then become excited about your students. Here’s how we can share and direct their excitement:

When children are learning from home, it’s important to make learning sessions as regular and predictable as possible. Consistency—doing your learning at the same time and in the same way each day—will help your child know what to expect so you can get the most out of your time.

UNICEF recommends setting a goal for a learning session and working up to it.[4] If your ultimate goal is 30 minutes per session, for example, try starting with 10 minutes and working a little longer each time.

2. Encourage your child to stay focused for the entire session.

Pay attention to what your child is currently learning in Waterford Upstart. When a situation arises that relates to a recent lesson, see if you can quiz your child to practice the concept.

7. Guide your child back to the task if they get distracted.

Even the hardest-working students are sometimes distracted. If your child has trouble focusing, try not to criticize or punish them. Instead, remind them that right now is their time to focus on learning and help them with their task as needed.

In an article with Edutopia, educational researcher Youki Terada suggests using regular, short breaks to help children focus and feel less stressed.[10] If your child seems overwhelmed about a lesson, suggest that they take a 10- to 15-minute break and come back to it when they’re feeling better.

Unionlearn is the TUC’s learning and skills organisation, which aims to help unions encourage learning among their members.

Why did you take on the post at ­Unionlearn?

Having been a teacher and lecturer, and now general secretary of an education union, I’m passionately interested in the skills agenda and in training and development for working people. This is one of the most important roles in the TUC, and I’m honoured to do the job. It is about learning at every level for people and, because union representatives broker the learning opportunities, it is far more likely that, through Unionlearn, people will be able to get the training and development they ­really want, as opposed to what management think they need.

What qualities do you bring to your work?

I bring a passion for learning for all people, whatever stage they are at, and a belief that if you can engage in learning that’s helpful to you personally and also meets your professional needs, you are more likely to gain satisfaction at work and find greater personal opportunities. For people who may have missed out on learning opportunities the first time round, this is essential.

How different are the two roles?

The essential quality is to know the difference between governance and management. Making that distinction is crucial. I’ve known governors who have not done so. In my own job at ATL, I manage more than 150 professional staff, so the job is professional leadership. At Unionlearn, I’m a governor. I don’t manage the staff. I’m responsible for strategic direction and I’m on the audit committee, ensuring funding is properly allocated and wisely spent. It’s about strategic advice, overview and audit.

You are said to represent the modern face of trade unionism. In what way?

I’m very clear that one of the key jobs for a union is to help its members progress in their careers, to be better and to gain promotion. At ATL, there is a big focus on continuous professional development. I do think that is a modern approach. And if you look forward, over the next two or three years, it’s unlikely that unions will be able to establish big wage premiums, so they will have to provide a range of services.
