# How to learn trigonometry Trigonometry is a branch of mathematics. Trigonometry is the study of triangles. It is very easy if approached in a right way. Trigonometry is all about the relation between the sides and angles of the triangles. In this article, we will discus how to learn trigonometry basics in 5 steps.

Step 1: Review your all basics.

Manipulating algebra practice. That is a crucial step in any branch of mathematics. Practice quadratic equation, linear equation etc.
Practice all the basics of geometry, Geometry is closely related to trigonometry.

a) Right angle: Right angle is of degree 90 and the radian of right angle is π/2

b) Straight angle: Straight angle is of degree 180 and radian of Straight angle is π.

c) Full Rotation: Full Rotation is of degree 360 and radian of Full Rotation is 2π.

Step 2: Start with the right angle triangles. It is a three sided triangle with one of its angle is 90 degree.

Right angle has three sides opposite, hypotenuse and adjacent.

Hypotenuse is the longest side of a right angle.

There are three basic sine, cosine and tangent function in trigonometry.
a)Sin θ = O/H
b)Cos θ = A/H
c)Tan θ = A/O

These functions can memorize in this way,
a) SOH=> Sin(sine). Opposite over hypotenuse.
b) CAH=> Cos(Cosine). Adjacent over hypotenuse.
c) TAO=> Tan(Tangent). Adjacent over opposite.

Learn Pythagoras theorem.

Example: A right angle have two sides 5 cm and 3 cm find the hypotenuse.

Solution: Given opposite =5cm and adjacent=3 cm

Using Pythagoras theorem
=>Hypotenuse2 =52+32
=>Hypotenuse2 =34
=>Hypotenuse=√34
Step 3: Go through the non-right triangle. These triangles are not a right angle triangle.

Its do not use Pythagoras theorem.

Sine, cosine and tangent function play the same role.

There are two important rules,
a) Sine rule: This rule holds the ratio of the length of a side to the sin of the angle of the opposite side. It is equal for all three sides.
a/sin A= b/sin B = c/ sin C

b)Cosine rule: Let a triangle with side a, b and c, the opposite angle of the side c is C
then,Cosine rule is,
c2=a2+b2-2ab cos(C)

Step 4: Learn the other important function of trigonometry.

Learn about measuring angle in radians. It is a another way to measure angle.

Like 180 degree in radians is π or 3.14.

Learn three important fundamental identities,
a) sin2 θ +cos2 θ =1
b)1+tan2 θ =sec2 θ
c) 1+cot2 θ =cosec2 θ

Learn the other three most important ratios.
a)cot θ =1/tan θ
b)sec θ =1/cos θ
c)cosec θ =1/sin θ

Step 5: Practice is the key for any branch of mathematics. Trigonometry is very easy to apply only when students know how use the rule and formulas.

For example, you have an equation have terms sine and cosine, your first step is ether change sine in terms of cosine or cosine in terms of sine. Practice on Trigonometry Help Online. Trigonometry helps us find angles and distances, and is used a lot in science, engineering, video games, and more!

## Right-Angled Triangle

The triangle of most interest is the right-angled triangle. The right angle is shown by the little box in the corner:

Another angle is often labeled θ , and the three sides are then called:

• Opposite: opposite the angle θ
• and the longest side is the Hypotenuse

### Why a Right-Angled Triangle?

Why is this triangle so important?

Imagine we can measure along and up but want to know the direct distance and angle:

Trigonometry can find that missing angle and distance.

Or maybe we have a distance and angle and need to “plot the dot” along and up:

Questions like these are common in engineering, computer animation and more.

## Sine, Cosine and Tangent

The main functions in trigonometry are Sine, Cosine and Tangent

They are simply one side of a right-angled triangle divided by another.

For any angle “θ“:

(Sine, Cosine and Tangent are often abbreviated to sin, cos and tan .)

### Example: What is the sine of 35°?

Using this triangle (lengths are only to one decimal place):

sin(35°) = OppositeHypotenuse = 2.84.9 = 0.57.

The triangle could be larger, smaller or turned around, but that angle will always have that ratio.

Calculators have sin, cos and tan to help us, so let’s see how to use them:

### Example: How Tall is The Tree?

We can’t reach the top of the tree, so we walk away and measure an angle (using a protractor) and distance (using a laser):

• We know the Hypotenuse
• And we want to know the Opposite

Sine is the ratio of Opposite / Hypotenuse:

sin(45°) = Opposite Hypotenuse

Get a calculator, type in “45”, then the “sin” key:

sin(45°) = 0.7071.

What does the 0.7071. mean? It is the ratio of the side lengths, so the Opposite is about 0.7071 times as long as the Hypotenuse. For the best introduction to trigonometry you want to start by WOWING your class. Before you even mention you are starting trigonometry take them through a real world problem.

Pick one student from your class. Preferably one who doesn’t usually pay attention (Let’s say his name is Johnny).

Draw them a picture on the board like this! Johnny’s dog is at the bottom of a cliff looking up at him. What is the angle of elevation between the dog and Johnny? Is there a tool we can use to find this? If this were actually happening in the real world. Johnny was actually on a cliff looking for his dog. We really needed to measure the angle of elevation. The only information we have is that the dog is 100 ft away and Johnny is 50 ft up the cliff from the dogs eye site. How could we measure this and with what tool?

You can’t! You will need to use Trigonometry to find this angle.

## What Next?

Ask them to give you other examples. Maybe give them a few more.

• Airplanes to ground (Angle of Depression)
• Boat to Para-sailor on the back (Either)
• Cat in a Tree
• and so on.

Then let them make a list of uses.

## Finally.

Give them your Introduction to Trigonometry Lesson! Now that you have their attention you can talk some math 🙂

Here is a cool video for more ideas! Most of them will not have seen anything like this before!

Trigonometry has been a tiring subject for students for years. Remembering the values and using those to solve problems have been an intimidating task for many. Even though they succeed in memorizing the elements, the concepts may get jumbled up during exams. Learn mathematics online leading to overall performance in Mathematics.

It would be an exciting experience if you learn the subject the way you should! Grasping the crux of the topic is what will change the game. Nothing can stop you, once you have imbibed the basic factors.

“Are there easy ways to learn trigonometry functions?”

“Yes, there are. We are explaining a couple of those in this article.”

This post will tell you two methodical approaches for studying trigonometry. Those are observing the applications of trigonometric formulae and a focussed approach to understanding the concepts.

## Understand the Concept

Trigonometry studies different types of triangles, the relationship among the angles present, and uses the analyzed data to obtain solutions. There are predefined rules that could be applied to calculate missing values, proving a relation, and so on.

The basic thing that a student should never forget is that the total of three angles in a triangle will always be 180 0. The essence of trigonometry lies in this very fact. Some of the common trigonometric terms include:

· Right Isosceles Triangle

Understanding the concept in reference to a Unit Circle helps in quick learning of principles of trigonometry. A circle with a radius of 1 is called a Unit Circle. The study begins with calculating Sines and Cosines of a right angle triangle placed in this circle, with the center (the origin) considered as 0, 0.

Studying the trigonometric functionalities is the next step. Six functions define trigonometric calculations. These would be utilized in relation to each other to explain different values and derive the properties of a triangle.

The functionalities are:

· Sine in short Sin

· Cosine in short Cos

· Tangent in short Tan

· Secant in short Sec

· Cosecant in short Cosec or Csc

· Cotangent in short Cot

The Unit Circle you drew initially explains the relationships perfectly. Having a fine understanding of the subject circle will instill better insights into trigonometric explanations. Each of the elements above has importance alone as well as in conjunction with other elements and assists you in evaluations related to triangles.

## Insights about the Application of Trigonometry

Trigonometry has wide usages in practical life. The subject could be applied to calculations of varying motions and behavioral analysis of objects depending on their movement patterns. Scientists apply the trigonometric formula to calculate the possible path and predict the result after a certain cycle.

For example, the moon cycle can be properly studied by the application of trigonometry. Researchers have already been using sine waves to depict motions.

You can connect trigonometric calculations with every movement you see around. Once you succeed in this, you will start enjoying the subject and would be able to connect with the subject brilliantly.

Consequently, you can derive formulae for the observations around. Unlike other subjects or topics, Trigonometry has widespread implications in life.

## Prepare Before the Class

You may find it difficult to follow the teacher the first time. The components or the elements viz. Sin, Cos, Tan, Cosec, Sec, and Cot would not register in our brain. It would be better if you can go through the lessons before the class. Therefore, you should be familiar with the subject in advance.
