If you’ve never made one before, think of it as a sort of “thought pyramid” with a central idea at the top and supporting ideas split into tiers underneath. Of course, graphic organizers don’t have to mimic the shape of a pyramid – you can design one any number of ways using Kapwing!

2. Rearrange and Add Shapes

You can use the template as is or change it up by clicking and dragging the Shapes into different formations. You can also delete Shapes by clicking them and hitting the “Delete” button or duplicate them by hitting “command” + “c” then “command” + “v.” Or add shapes by clicking “Elements” and selecting the ones you’d like to add to your canvas.‌

Next, make the center of each shape transparent. Click on the shape itself, then select “Fill Color” under “Edit” in the Style Toolbar and select the no-color option (or any color you want!). If you’d like to change the color and/or thickness of the shape’s outline, you can do so by selecting the “Outline Color” and increasing the “Outline Width” (also in the Style Toolbar).

As educators, we’re always looking for new ways to help students classify and communicate their ideas more effectively. A visual guide, such as a graphic organizer, can do just that, as well as help students plan and structure their ideas in an organized manner. Here we will take a brief look at what a graphic organizer is, the different types of graphic organizers that you can use, as well as how you can use them effectively in the classroom.

What is a Graphic Organizer?

A graphic organizer is a powerful, visual learning tool that teachers like to use to help students organize their ideas. They can also be used to clarify or simplify complex concepts, help with problem solving or decision making, or be used to plan research or brainstorm ideas.

What are the Different Types of Graphic Organizers?

While there are several types of graphic organizers, each with a specific purpose, we will briefly go over the top five most popular used in the classroom.

Venn Diagram

A Venn diagram is a graphic organizer that has two interlocking circles. This type of organizer is used to identify differences and similarities. Students write details about how the topics are different in the outer parts of the circles and how they are the same in the shared inner space of circles.

Venn diagrams can be used to compare and contrast two characters. For example, students would write how each character is different in the outer spaces and how they are the same in the overlapping space in the middle. Then, students can use this graphic organizer to help them write an essay about each character.

Concept Map

A concept map is a graphic organizer that looks like a web with arrows connecting each circle. This type of map helps students identify a main concept as well as sub-concepts. It can be used to help visually organize thoughts as well as illustrate hierarchical information.

There are a variety of ways this type of organizer can be used in the classroom. Students can show relationships between specific concepts, characters in a story, or even vocabulary words. Many teachers like to use it to assess students’ prior knowledge on a topic.

T-Chart

A T-chart is a graphic organizer that is used to compare and contrast two different things. Students can use a T-chart to make comparisons related to a variety of topics or subjects; they can also be used in any content area or genre. For example, in social studies students can compare two different political candidates, then use the chart to help them in a class debate.

Idea Web

An idea web is a graphic organizer that is used for brainstorming and helps students organize ideas or concepts. Much like a concept map, an idea web is comprised of circles that are connected. This type of organizer is mainly used to help students brainstorm story ideas. For example, a topic is written in the center circle and students write in the details in the surrounding smaller circles.

KWL Chart

A KWL chart is another popular graphic organizer, especially in the elementary classroom. This visual learning tool consists of three questions, each in their own column (‘what I Know’, ‘what I Want to know’, and ‘what I Learned’). This is a great graphic organizer for activating prior knowledge.

This organizer is used both before and after learning a concept. Before learning, students write down “what they want to know” and “what they already know” about the topic. Then, after the concept is learned, students write down “what they learned” in the third column of the chart. This three-step process is great for developing a sense of purpose and helps students become more engaged in the topic they are learning.

How to Use Graphic Organizers Effectively

Graphic organizers can be a helpful learning tool, especially when they can guide students to a deeper understanding of what they are learning. To effectively support student learning, it’s important to always model how to use the organizer, as well as instruct students on why you choose the graphic organizer that you did for that specific topic.

For example, explain to students that you choose a Venn diagram as a starting point for an essay they will be writing because it will help them compare two characters in an organized manner before they begin writing their essay. When students understand what they are doing and why they are doing it, it will give them a sense of purpose.

Graphic organizers are great tools to meet the needs of all learners. By presenting information in a graphic format, you can easily make a lesson accessible to all students. To increase the effectiveness of a graphic organizer, always make sure to model beforehand and explain why you are using it and what you are using it for. Also, make sure that each graphic organizer that you choose is aligned with your learning goal; this will ensure that students will apply the information learned and develop a deeper understanding of the concept.

Using Google Drawings to create graphic organizers can help students gather their thoughts and customize to their needs.

S ometimes, we just need some help organizing our thoughts — students AND educators.

Paper versions of graphic organizers can do a nice job of that. But by making them digital in Google Apps, they instantly become customizable. Multiple people can collaborate on them in real time. They can be shared with a link, embedded in a website or downloaded as an image file.

In short, digital graphic organizers are more versatile.

In Google Apps, there’s a highly powerful yet highly overlooked app called Drawings.It gives users a blank canvas where they can add text, shapes, lines, etc. When done, they can save their work as image files or PDF files and can add those images to documents, slides and spreadsheets.

Drawings can be the virtual page where students can gather and process their ideas.

I used to shy away from doing a lot of graphic organizers because it’s hard to design them in Google Docs; the moment I learned that you could change the page set-up to 8.5 x 11 inches, my world CHANGED. Now I rarely use Google Docs to make *anything*; I use Google Slides by default because I can add more graphics and have better control of the overall configuration. — Amy Nolan, high school English teacher, Commerce, Texas

Creating graphic organizer templates with Google Drawings

As Amy mentioned above, Google Slides can be used to create these as well as Google Drawings. The difference — Drawings focuses on one single page; Slides has multiple slides, which allows for multiple pages.

I’ve created 15 of them (see links below) that can be copied, saved, changed, tweaked or completely redone to fit your needs and your students’ needs. We have added 10 more that were created by the Ditch That Textbook community and shared with us for this post.

It took me about 90 minutes to make 15 of them so that averages out to six minutes each. (Some were more time-consuming than others, and I got faster at making them as I progressed.)

Sharing your Google Drawings graphic organizers

Once you’ve created a graphic organizer (or have saved one of mine), there are a few easy ways to get them to your students:

  • If you use Google Classroom, create a new assignment and choose the option to deliver a copy of your graphic organizer to each student.
  • You can copy the URL (link) to the graphic organizer and deliver it to students via a class website, SeeSaw etc. You can also make a shorter, easier URL to type with URL shorteners like Bitly and TinyURL. (Check your Internet filter to make sure your shortened URLs come through. I’ve found that TinyURL works in most schools’ filters.)
  • Using the blue “Share” button, click the “Get shareable link” button and set the document as “Anyone with the link” at the top and “Can view” at the bottom. That way, students won’t be able to change your original copy and will have to make a copy of their own.
  • PRO TIP: When you copy a URL (link) to any G Suite file, it probably says “view” or “edit” at the end of it. If you change that word to “copy”, it will force whoever opens that link to make a copy of the file instead of opening your file. That’s another trick to keeping your original version from being altered. (If you assign it through Google Classroom, you won’t need to do this.)

Activity: Creating Graphic Organizers

  1. Open Microsoft Word.
  2. On the Menu Bar, choose File, then Page Set Up.
  3. Change the Top, Bottom, Right, and Left Margin measurements to half an inch. (.5)

  5. If the Draw toolbar isn’t visible (usually at the bottom of the screen), on the Menu Bar, select View, then Tool Bars. Select the Drawing Tool by clicking it with the mouse.

  1. The Draw Tool Bar contains many tools that are useful in creating flow charts, Venn diagrams, story maps, causal chains, time lines, sequencing, character webs, and others.
  2. Click the AutoShapes Button on the Drawing Tool Bar. A pop-up menu will appear. Move the mouse over the choices on the menu and other pop-up menus will appear. Click on the shape you wish to use.
  3. The mouse tool will change to cross hairs. (+) Position the cross hairs where you want the shape to be placed. (Usually we start with a shape from Basic Shapes) example:

  1. Drag the mouse to create the shape on the document.
  2. The shape contains handles that are represented by squares on the corners and sides. The shapes also include yellow diamond shapes that can be used to manipulate the shape.
  3. Move the shape around the page by placing the mouse in the middle of the shape and clicking and dragging with the mouse to the desired location.
  4. Position the required shapes on the document. Example: Sequencing Chart

  1. To add the text to the shapes, click the Text Box Button on the Drawing Tool Bar.

  1. Position the mouse on the inside of the shape you wish to type in. Draw the Text Box within the shape using the mouse. Type in the contents. The Text Box also has handles to manipulate its size and shape. To make it easier to adjust Text Boxes or AutoShapes, push down the Alt Key while manipulating the mouse on the shape handles.
  2. Click on the outside of the shape to see how the text looks inside the shape. If part of the shape is missing after adding the text, it means that the Text Box is covering it.
    1. Think of each shape and Text Box as having a white background. It is part of the white background that is covering the shape behind it.
    2. To make the Text Box transparent (clear), select the Text Box with the mouse so that you can see the outline and the handles of the Text Box.
    3. Select the Fill Color Tool (paint can) on the Drawing Tool Bar. Select “No Fill”.
    4. Select the Line Color Tool and select “No Line”.

Using Excel as a Graphic Organizer

Webs are common features of the TCAP assessment. This activity will use Excel to create the sample web that is seen below:

Open an Excel workbook. First, let�s remove the grid lines before we draw the web. Go to the Tools menu, slide down to Options and click one time. On the View tab, in the bottom left corner there is a checkmark by the word Gridlines. Click in the box to remove the check mark and then click OK to return to a blank worksheet.

You must have the Drawing toolbar open to draw this web. If the toolbar is open you will see the word Draw in the bottom left corner of the Excel window. If you do not see the word Draw, go to the View menu, select Toolbars and slide over to Drawing and click one time.

Next, we will draw one of the four ovals. Click on the oval shape on the Drawing toolbar and move your cursor onto the blank sheet. Notice that the mouse pointer has changed to a cross hair. That is the drawing cursor. Click on the left mouse button, leave the button pressed down, and drag diagonally to the right and down to draw a shape like you see above. After drawing the oval shape, copy the shape by holding down the Ctrl key and tapping the C key ( Ctrl + C ) one time. After a shape is copied, paste three more of the ovals by holding down the Ctrl key and tapping the V key ( Ctrl + V ) four times. Move them into an arrangement like you see above.

To add text in an oval, click on the oval and type the text you see above. Text will look small, we will fix that later. Leave one oval blank or enter a question mark as you see above. You can make changes to each oval, one at a time, or change them all at once. Click on an oval, hold down the Shift key and click on each of the other ovals. Release the shift key. All of the ovals you clicked on are selected. To change them all at once, go to the Format menu and click on AutoShape . On the Font tab select a text size of 11 . Use a larger size if you drew a larger oval. On the Alignment tab select Center for both vertical and horizontal alignment. Click on OK to see the changes you made.

The next step is to connect the outer ovals to the center oval. To do that, we will use a part of the AutoShapes menu named Connectors . Click on AutoShapes , move your cursor to Connectors and select the second one, a straight line with one arrow head. Your cursor is now a cross hair. cursor used for drawing. Without clicking, move your cursor to the top oval. Notice that blue dots pop up showing where you may start drawing the connector. Click on the dot closest to another oval, let go of your mouse button (don�t click and drag) and move to a lower oval. When you see blue dots click one time on the dot closest to the title oval. Follow this procedure until all three ovals are connected to the title oval.

To make the web look as much lick the TCAP sample as possible, enter the question and four choices below the web. Put each line in a new line on the worksheet. Start every line after the question one cell further to the right than the cell where you typed the question.
