– A square of paper ( if you don’t have one you can use an A4 sheet )
– A pair of scissors
Step 2:
If you have a square sheet of paper you can skip the next couple of steps and go on to step 6.
Take your A4 sheet of paper and fold over the top left corner so that it reaches the other side in a triangular shape. Crease along the folded line with your thumb nail or a bone knife if you have one.
Step 3:
Underneath the triangle there should be a rectangle pull it up so that the bottom of the rectangle is in line with the bottom of the triangle. Crease along the fold line.
Step 4:
Unfold all of the sheet until your left with an A4 piece of paper with 2 creases on it.
Step 5:
Cut off the rectangle shape at the bottom of the page so you have a square.
Step 6:
( If you made the square out of the A4 paper you will already have this crease line )
Fold the paper in half and open out.
Step 7:
Fold in the top and bottom points so that the edges meet along the central crease.
Step 8:
Fold back the left hand point to the folded edge.
Step 9:
Fold over the short diagonal edges from the ends of the left hand triangle as shown in picture.
Step 10:
Fold forward the top of the model along the central crease.
Step 11:
turn over the tail at a sharp angle and make a crease, then open out the body, fold the tail inside and reverse the creases.
Step 12:
Now you can see the shape of the whale.
Step 13:
Now you can draw a face and designs on your whale.
Step 14:
Now you have finished you whale and it should be able to stand up like in the picture. I would love to see your creations so take a picture and post it in the comments. Thanks for looking at my instructable and hopefully making. 🙂
These origami whale instructions were put together for Arkive, an online image library dedicated to endangered species. This origami whale does have one tricky fold which I’ve been careful to give clear and simple instructions for. Aside from that, it is fairly simple to make.
Step 1: Begin with a square piece of origami paper. If you only have regular 8.5×11 paper,
follow these instructions to make a square sheet.
Step 2: Fold the paper in half by folding the left corner to the right corner, then unfold.
Step 3: Fold the lower left and right edges to the center, then unfold.
Step 4: Now fold the upper left and right edges to the center, then unfold.
Step 5: Fold the top corner to the bottom corner, then unfold.
Step 6: Let’s work on the fins. Pinch the left and right corners with both hands and bring the corners to meet at the center.
Step 7: Fold the fins back against the top half.
Step 8: Fold the top corner down until it meets with the corners of the fin, then unfold.
Step 9: Turn the figure over.
Step 10: Fold the top corner down at the crease you made from Step 8.
Step 11: Fold in a portion of the left and right corners. Try to make the folds even on both sides.
Step 12: Fold in half by folding the entire right side of the figure over to the left.
Step 13: Fold down the fin (loose flap).
Step 14: Turn over.
Step 15: Now fold down the other fin.
Step 16: Create the tail by folding the bottom corner of the figure to the side, then unfold.
Step 17: Now we’ll attempt an outside reverse fold.
Open the the whale and bend the tail backwards along the crease. Both sides of the tail sould wrap around the edge.
Step 18: Finish! Your tail should look like this when you’re done.

NOTE: If you have single-sided origami paper then do not worry at all just place the colour side facing down however that side will be the outer side of the whale.
Fold the Both Side Till Center Line
Now open the paper and see a centerline due to the diagonal fold. First of all, take the right side of the paper and fold it to the center and similarly do it for the left side as well.
Fold the Bottom Part of the Paper
Once the side folding is done from both sides then you can see the bottom part is popping out. However, fold the bottom part of the paper towards up as you can see in the image below.
Fold the Paper into Equal Half
Now after the bottom part folding you have to fold the whole from the center as you can see below in the image. And then make a proper crease at the sides.
Let’s Create a Tail of the Whale
Now hold the bottom part and then fold the little part of it towards upwards and similarly do the downwards as well as you can see in the image below.
Fold the Tail and Push it Inside
Now open the folding and then hold the tail and then using your finger to make the tail pointer as shown below and further, push the tail inside. This fold will determine the width of the whale’s body.
Make Use of Scissor to Create a Slit On the Whale Tale
Now take a small scissor and slowly make a small cut at the edge of the tail as you can see I am doing it and further flatten the whale and make a proper crease.
It’s Time to Draw a Face of the Whale
Make use of a regular black pencil and with freehand draw the face of the whale however y ou can also use a black colour sketch pen. If you love to make origami paper crafts then you must have a look at my collections.
