You will Learn in this Post

How to make fake earrings that look real

Making fake hoop earrings

How to make fake earrings

You’ll need to make use of one of your notebooks with the spiral metal rings. But if you don’t have one of these or you cannot find it, go to the nearest art shop or bead shop and get some 20-24 gauge metal wire in any color of your choice.

  • Using a pair of wire cutters, snip off one of the loops, then another for the other earrings. You should now have two identical metal rings. Just make sure you’ve cut off the hook that’s often at the end of the metal ring. Don’t use scissors, though, because the metal will dull it.
  • Using the metal wire, cut off about 1 or 2 inches using paper cutters, then wrap this wire around a marker or a pen to shape the wire.
  • You could slip down one (or 3) pretty bead down the wire to make the earrings fancier.
  • Note that if you need to make dangling hoop earrings, you’d have to get the charm or the pendant from one of your bracelets or necklaces.

How to make fake earrings

  • Take your round pliers next, the twist the wires into each other, with the end of the wire curling inwards. You’ll need to pinch the cut end using pliers then fold it inwards – this is an important step that will help make the earrings softer and a lot more comfortable for you to wear. These loops will also keep the beads from falling if you choose to add the beads for decorative purposes.
  • Now, shape or reshape the earrings as needed, and for your comfort – you could use either your fingers or even a pen to easily curve the earrings into the perfect ring shape. Just make sure you leave out enough space between the loops you’ve folded.

Finally, wear your new hoop earrings!

Make Magnetic Earrings

How to make fake earrings

  • If you haven’t pierced your ears but need to accessorize, you could never go wrong with magnet earrings. You only need to find two pieces of matching metal that could work as the flat backs for your earrings. They don’t even have to be metallic – they could be rhinestones, buttons, or a pair of cute beads. Just make sure that the size is right for your earlobe and also not too chunky/ heavy. If you choose to use the buttons off your coat or your stud earrings, you’ll need to snip off the loop or the prong using wire cutters. Kids engaging in this project will need some adult supervision.
  • Next up, take 4 disk-shaped, small magnets, and make sure that the magnets are all the same size but smaller than the pieces you’ve selected for the main jewelry. Consider looking for magnets designed specifically for earrings – a visit to the beading section of the art store will give you a good range of options to choose from. But you could still use the small black regular magnets – though these are not as powerful, they won’t feel painful or strenuous on the ears. You may also opt for the rare-earth, silver magnets if you need stronger magnets – but beware of the pain they may come with, especially if you have sensitive ears. Generally, you should skip the silver-colored, rare-earth magnets if your ears are sensitive.

How to make fake earrings

  • With the main parts of the earrings picked out, spread some glue on the backs of the two magnets, setting aside the other two magnets for later use. Press these two into the glue, with the flat side facing down, the magnet sticking out underneath. Allow the glue to dry, and keep them apart from each other so that they don’t get attracted to and stick to each other.
  • Once dry, wear your new earrings, holding them against your earlobes. Now, pick the other magnet and put it on your earlobe’s back. The magnet should stick, but if it doesn’t, you’ll only need to flip it around. Do this to the other earring.

Conclusion

If you wish to make fake hoop or stud earrings, the two options above are just perfect for you. Just keep in mind that they are temporary fixes, and these earrings will not last as long as earrings from the jewelry store would.

An allergic reaction to jewelry usually occurs when your skin comes into contact with certain metals present in your jewelry or piercings. This reaction is commonly known as contact dermatitis, and its main symptom is a red, itchy rash. While this rash isn’t contagious or life-threatening, it can be very uncomfortable.

Most jewelry allergies are caused by the metal nickel, which is used as the base metal for many inexpensive pieces of jewelry. It takes repeated or prolonged exposure to these items before a person develops a nickel allergy, and patients with sensitive skin should avoid products containing nickel as much as possible.

Causes of a Jewelry Allergy

People can be allergic to any metal, but nickel allergies are the most common. The exact cause of this allergy is unknown, but it may develop due to your immune system’s sensitivity to nickel. Ordinarily, your immune system will only fight off bacteria, viruses, and other toxic substances. However, a nickel allergy indicates that your immune system sees this metal as a harmful substance as well.

It may take repeated exposure before your body develops an adverse reaction to nickel, but once it happens your immune system will always respond negatively whenever you come into contact with it. This may also happen with any other metal, even gold.

Aside from wearing cheap jewelry, here are other factors that may increase the risk of developing contact dermatitis:

  • Working with metal: If your occupation causes you to come in contact with metal frequently, you are more at risk of developing an allergy. The risk is increases if you’re exposed to wet metals, such as when you sweat or come into contact with water.
  • Family history: If you have family members who are sensitive to certain kinds of metal, the chances are high that you will inherit the same type of allergy.
  • Being female: Since females traditionally tend to have more piercings, they are more exposed to metal allergies when compared to males.

What Are The Symptoms of an Allergic Reaction?

A jewelry allergy typically begins 24 to 48 hours after being exposed to the item. These symptoms may last for as long as 2 to 4 weeks, and will usually only appear where the metal came into contact with the skin.

The symptoms of a jewelry allergy may resemble a reaction to poison ivy. More specifically, the symptoms that result may include:

  • Itching or irritation
  • Redness
  • Tenderness
  • Swelling
  • Warmth
  • Bumps
  • Rashes
  • Dry patches that resemble a burn
  • Blisters and draining fluid

Are there Any Risks with Inexpensive Jewelry?

When wearing cheap jewelry results in rashes, the rash may become infected with bacteria. This may happen when the skin becomes moist, or if it becomes broken and raw due to scratching. It’s best to see a dermatologist for treatment if your skin becomes crusted, yellow, weeps, or smells odd. The infected rash will not improve until it’s treated.

Treating an Allergic Reaction to Cheap Jewelry

There is no permanent cure for an allergy caused by metal. The best thing that can be done is to avoid certain metals, especially those found in jewelry. Here are some steps you may take to help treat your skin after an allergic reaction:

  1. Remove the jewelry responsible for the allergy. If you suspect a certain piece of jewelry is causing the problem, it’s best to stop wearing it and observe how your skin reacts.
  2. Apply a steroid cream on the surface of the rash to help it heal. Your dermatologist may prescribe a corticosteroid cream, nonsteroidal cream, oral corticosteroids, or an oral antihistamine. Medication will help reduce the symptoms and relieve the irritation.
  3. Emollient creams or soothing lotions such as calamine lotion, petroleum jelly, or mineral oil can help ease the itching. It’s also important to moisturize regularly, since your skin’s natural barrier has been disrupted by the allergens.
  4. A wet compress can help soothe your blisters and relieve the itching. You can soak a clean cloth in tap water, then apply it onto the affected area of the skin.
  5. Avoid over-the-counter ointments like antibiotic creams, as these may contain ingredients such as neomycin which can worsen an allergic reaction.
  6. For patients whose allergies do not get better with topical or oral steroids, phototherapy is another treatment you can try. A phototherapy procedure involves exposing the skin to a controlled amount of artificial UV light.

Tips For Wearing Costume Jewelry

When you are diagnosed with some form of allergy to metal, it’s important to stay away from jewelry and other accessories containing that metal.

However, this is easier said than done as many jewelry products contain metals like nickel. Silver or gold plated jewelry contain nickel alloys underneath. Any gold jewelry that is less than 24K, such as white gold, will also contain a mixture of metals to provide structure to soft, pure gold.

Here are some ways you can continue to wear inexpensive jewelry and keep your skin safe at the same time:

Purchase hypoallergenic jewelry

If you’re allergic to a specific metal, be sure to check that the jewelry you plan to buy does not contain that metal. Look for hypoallergenic jewelry such as nickel-free stainless steel, surgical-grade stainless steel, titanium, platinum, sterling silver, and 18K gold. Avoid buying jewelry plated with another metal or made of mixed metals like white gold.

Create barriers for your skin

Creating barriers will help you reduce the risk of an allergic reaction while handling metals. For example, use gloves if you’re working with metals. With jewelry, three coats of clear nail polish can do the trick. Apply the clear nail polish on the part of the jewelry that comes into contact with your skin, so you limit the amount of irritants that interact with body heat and sweat. Be sure to reapply additional coats of polish after a few wears.

Visit a reputable piercing studio

If you’re planning to get piercings done, make sure to choose a studio that provides piercing services in a clean and professional environment. Check if the studio uses sterile, sealed surgical-grade stainless steel needles. Piercing guns should also be maintained so that the part touching a customer’s skin will not be used on other customers. Ask your piercer for hypoallergenic jewelry made of sterling silver or similar metals, and see if they can provide documentation on the metal content of their products.

If you love jewelry, you appreciate the irresistible allure of their sparkle that keeps you going for more. Looking at brilliant jewelry at a store is enough to make most people buy another piece. However, even the most glamorous jewelry fades with time and the first option you have is to take it to a professional for cleaning. This can be an expensive and tedious affair. In fact, many people opt to buy new gleaming jewelry instead.

Now there is some good news for all the jewelry lovers out there. You do not have to pay through your nose to get your jewelry cleaned by a professional. You can maintain your pieces in mint condition by using DIY cleaning methods at home. This article offers tricks to keep that diamond cocktail ring or any other piece of jewelry you have in your jewelry collection to make it look new, including your diamond solitaire pendants with ease.

Let us have a look at how you can do that. Learn step-by-step how to clean a diamond ring with our following tips.

1. Avoid Using Harsh Chemicals To Clean Your Jewelry

If you wish to maintain your jewelry in sparkling condition, this tip will help you a lot. You may think that the abrasive cleaners that you use for normal cleaning around the house will work on your jewelry, but you are wrong. You see, the best jewelry items are made of alloys some of which may contain reactive natural materials, and if you use harsh or abrasive bleaches to clean the surface, you might end up running these jewelry pieces altogether.

2. Using Ammonia

Do you know that you need to clean your diamond jewelry to maintain its sparkle? So, If you want your diamond to retain its sparkle, then you have to work for it. To do this, soak your diamond jewelry pieces for about 15 minutes in a mixture of a cup of warm water and a quarter cup of ammonia. After they have soaked, use a soft-bristled toothbrush to scrub away any dirt or grime that remains on the surface in the crevices of the setting of the piece. Rinse the pieces in warm water and wipe them with a soft cloth. The natural return of the sparkle of your diamond jewelry will leave you impressed with the results.

3. Using White Vinegar

It is likely that you will have vinegar in your kitchen. Vinegar is one of the most important items for DIY cleaning. You can use your gold and gemstone diamond earrings also. Drop the pieces in a jar of vinegar and let them stay there for 10-15 minutes. You can stir them around occasionally and after the 15 minutes are up, use a soft-bristled toothbrush to remove any grime on the surface or from the crevices of your jewelry.

4. Lemon Essential Oil

You can find lemon essential oil in most homes as it comes in handy for many things. What you might not know is that this can help you maintain your jewelry in mint condition. Whatever your kind of jewelry, lemon essential oil comes in handy. To use it, add 3 drops of lemon essential oil to 85 ml of water. Take your jewelry pieces, drop them into this solution, and let them sit for at least 5 minutes or overnight.

Take the piece out of the solution and use an old toothbrush to scrub any grime and dirt that is hidden in crevices. Use a soft polishing cloth to wipe away the solution and your jewelry will sparkle once more. This is one of the most effective techniques for cleaning jewelry.

5. When In A Hurry, Use Baking Soda

You can find baking soda in almost every home. However, most people do not know how effective this cooking ingredient is for jewelry cleaning. You need 1 tablespoon of baking soda, 1 tablespoon of dish soap, 1 cup of warm water, and 1 tablespoon of salt. Line a bowl with aluminum foil and then add these ingredients. Stir the solution to mix it properly, and then drop your jewelry pieces in. Let them soak in the solution for 10- 15 minutes. Rinse and then dry using a soft polishing cloth. Your jewelry will regain its gleam and look new. Most people say that this is the most effective tip for cleaning jewelry as it works for all types of materials.

6. Using Window/Glass Cleaner

This is another effective jewelry-cleaning tip that you could try when you need to remove oil, dirt, and grime from your pieces. Mix a few drops of dish soap and a glass cleaner in a small bowl. Drop your jewelry in the mixture for some time. Scrub the piece using an old toothbrush and then rinse it after about 10-15 minutes. The effect will surprise you.

7. Clean Silver Jewelry Using Pieces of Chalk

Silver jewelry is without a doubt among the most popular in the market because it is brilliant, durable, and versatile. However, there is a big problem with tarnishing over time. You can prevent tarnishing by dropping some pieces of chalk into your jewelry box. The chalk will absorb excess moisture and prevent tarnishing. Your silver jewelry will always sparkle.

8. Use Mild Shampoo, for Delicate Pearls

Pearls are delicate but you can still clean them at home. Tie your delicate pearls in a nylon stocking and then fill your kitchen sink with warm water. Add mild shampoo into the water and rub the nylon stocking against the pearls gently. Rinse the pearls after some time and gently pat them dry.

9. Using Antacid Tablets

You may be surprised to know that the fizzing power that cleans your stomach when you swallow anti-acid tablets can also help clean your jewelry. Add two antacid tablets to a glass of warm water and drop your jewelry piece into the solution. Let it sit in the effervescent solution for about two minutes and then remove, rinse and dry.

10. Use Beer For Plain Gold Jewelry

Pour some lager on a soft cloth and rub your gold jewelry. Use a clean cloth to dry and you will notice the return of the sparkle of your jewelry.

These methods are super easy and very efficient to make any of your jewelry pieces maintain their sparkle. If you feel your diamond cocktail ring or any other jewelry item has lost its sparkle, try one of these tricks and you will marvel at the results.

Summary: Wearing magnetic earrings you needn’t experience the pains from pierced ears. Our tutorial is to inform you practical tips about how to make magnetic earrings look real.

You want to pierce ears for jewelry wearing? Yes, most of you are eager to wear earrings to adorn yourself and show off the beauty, but the pain of piercing is a huge obstacle which gets you cringed! Maybe you are too young or too old to be allowed to get ears pierced. So magnetic earrings are a better choice, and this tutorial is to tell you how to make magnetic earrings look real ones.

Never touch or pull hard on them

Do not attach heavy and long dangles to your magnetic earrings, and stop others or yourself from touching or pulling them, otherwise they will move, cause pain feelings and even fall.

Fake the back of your magnetic ones

Magnetic earring studs have the plain flat round backs that are easily detected by some sharp eyes; so you’d better tear some backs from real earrings and snuggly glue them onto your magnetic ones, which can to a great extent deceive the public.

Cover the magnetic backs and fix the “piercing” place

If your hair’s long enough, use it to naturally cover the magnetic backs, or wear a hood when wearing them; moreover you must fix the places where you wear them, or people will notice they are fake as every time your earrings are in different places.

Some certain cultures, religions or medical ailments, however, may prohibit an individual from piercing ears. Because of individuals, you will discover choices to pierced ears including clip-on earrings, ear cuffs and magnetic jewelry. After referring to the how to make magnetic earrings real tutorial, you will wear them in a very fine way.

For individuals with pierced noses, it can be difficult to find an appealing nose stud. Unfortunately, many piercing businesses offer a limited selection of nose studs and it can be hard to find the right stud by shopping online, as it’s difficult to get an idea of the stud’s exact size, profile and precise appearance. Making a homemade nose stud is ideal for cases when a stud or nose ring is accidentally lost and an immediate trip to the nearest retailer isn’t possible. (Leaving a nose piercing without a stud or ring will result in closure of the piercing hole, sometimes in a matter of hours in the case of a newer piercing.) But fortunately, it’s fairly easy to make a nose stud from traditional stud earrings.

  • Gold or Silver Stud Earrings
  • Two Pairs of Needle-Nose Pliers
  • A Fine-Grain Metal File
  • A Pierced Nose
  • Ruler or Tape Measure
  • Rubbing Alcohol or Hydrogen Peroxide

Creating Your Own Nose Stud

Select the stud earrings that you’d like to turn into a nose stud. The studs should be gold or silver to avoid irritating the sensitive skin of the nose. Pay attention to the profile of the earrings; studs with a large stone and large setting will protrude from the nose. The best nose studs are made from earrings that are small, with a low profile when viewed from the side. They should be lightweight; a large, heavy gem will pull out of the nose instead of resting flush against the skin.

Use a fine-grain metal file to smooth the edges at the end of the earring post. This portion of the earring will be located inside the nostril, so it’s important that it’s smooth to avoid irritation.

Starting at the bottom of the stud setting, measure 1/5 of an inch down the stud post.

Grasp the stud post with two pairs of needle-nose pliers positioned on either side of the point located in Step 2 — a point on the earring post that’s about 1/5 inch down from the bottom of the setting.

Use the needle-nose pliers to slowly bend the earring post into a 90-degree angle, creating an “L” shape. The bend should be about 1/5 of an inch down the post.

Position one pair of pliers at the very tip of the earring post, which is now the horizontal part of the “L.” Position the other pair of pliers on that same horizontal portion of earring post, right before the bend.

Use the pliers to gently bend the lower, horizontal portion of the earring post (the bottom part of the “L”) into a half-circle, curling upward.

Place the new nose stud into a cap full of rubbing alcohol or hydrogen peroxide for two full minutes to sterilize the stud before inserting it into the nose piercing.

If the visible portion of the nose stud sags and pulls away from the skin instead of sitting flush, this may be due to a stud gem that’s too heavy. This can often be remedied by positioning the 90-degree bend slightly higher on the earring post. For a more subtle look, opt for gold instead of silver. Gold tends to blend with skin better than silver, which offers more contrast.

Rings are my favorite piece of jewelry to collect, wear and make. Learning how to make rings is easy and opens up endless possibilities for personalization. Start with simple bands or stacking rings you can make by simply combining silver wire with basic metalsmithing and texturing tools likes hammers and files.

I prefer standard 8-gauge half-round wire for ring making, but you could use 6- to 10-gauge round, half-round, flat or square wire, as well. Branch out to alternative metals such as copper, and you’ve multiplied your options even further. Then there are patinas you can add with products like liver of sulfur; the options are truly endless!

To learn how to make rings, let’s focus on one type. This simple step-by-step tutorial will walk you through how to make a silver ring using simple tools for metalsmithing jewelry. Then you can use these basic steps to make bands for more elaborate rings, like rings set with stones or other designs.

Easy Ring Making: How to Make Sterling Silver Stack Rings

  • 3–4″ piece of narrow paper, scissors
  • 8-gauge half-round sterling silver wire
  • Jeweler’s saw, 4/0 saw blades
  • Flat-nose pliers
  • Sharpie marker
  • Medium tooth (#2) file
  • Torch setup with firing brick
  • Sandpaper
  • Medium solder, solder pick
  • Flux and brush
  • Burlife or Gemlube
  • Pot of hot pickle and tongs or tweezers
  • Bowl of water
  • Rawhide mallet, steel ring mandrel
  • Texturing tools: Hammer(s), file(s), etc.

How to Make Rings:

  1. Measure and cut: The first step in learning how to make rings is to wrap the slip of paper around the lucky finger and mark where the end overlaps. Use this as a guide to mark the length on your wire. Mark off as many as you’d like to cut.
  2. How to make fake earringsUsing the jeweler’s saw strung with a lubricated 4/0 saw blade, saw on the marks using a smooth, fluid sawing motion. Don’t use wire cutters, because they’ll pinch the ends into points instead of cutting them evenly and straight; then you’ll have to file more, wasting metal.
  3. File and pre-form: File the ends flawlessly even so they will match up perfectly and your band(s) will be seamless. Then file off a tiny bit of the flat, interior side of the wire (as shown by the red arrow in the photo at right) to make room for soldering.
  4. How to make fake earringsUse your fingers and flat-nose pliers to curve the wire into an oval ring. Don’t bother with a mandrel and don’t worry about the shape being perfectly round or even, but do be sure that the ends meet up perfectly (in a butt joint). There should be absolutely no light passing between the two ends. Making the joint side a little flat will help the ends meet perfectly. Note: If you intend to keep your ring polished rather than add texture, use coated pliers or take care not to scratch or mar the wire.
  5. Try on the ring to make sure it fits. If it’s too large, file and test again; if it’s too small, start deciding who you’ll give it to!
  6. Pickle: Drop the ring(s) into hot pickle to clean it for a couple of minutes. Sand the end of your solder wire to make sure it’s clean, too. Next, snip off a small (about 1mm) piece for each ring and use tweezers or a solder pick (not fingers) to place the solder on your firing brick. Lift out the ring(s) with copper tongs, then rinse and dry. Avoid touching the metal with your fingers at any point during this part of the process.
  7. How to make fake earringsFlux: Holding the ring(s) in tweezers, paint them one at a time with flux and place each one on your firing brick so that each seam/joint is facing you and directly on a piece of solder wire. Note: If you’re making multiple rings all at once, only heat/solder one at a time.
  8. Soldering: Fire up your torch with a quiet (non-hissing) reducing flame. Keeping the flame moving and with the blue cone about ¼-inch from the surface, heat the brick around the ring, from back (away from the solder bit) to the front (near the solder), heating it gradually. Slowly move closer to the ring, passing over it more frequently as you go.
  9. Watch for the flux to bubble and turn white. This tells you you’re at about 400°F. Heat the metal more directly now, still moving the flame but staying on the piece, keeping the blue cone about ¼-inch away from the surface. Pass near the solder more frequently now and watch closely! You need to pay attention to notice as the different stages of heating occur.
  10. How to make fake earringsLook for the flux to turn clear and glassy. When this occurs, you know you’re at 1,100°F and your solder is melting. It will soon flow. When it does, you’ll see a bright silver line appear, and the solder will seem to slide up into the seam/joint almost instantly. Remove the flame immediately.
  11. Use tweezers to move the ring to the cup of water; tiptoe it in slowly to quench it before dropping it in the pickle pot. Remember that the metal is very HOT at this point, so be careful to protect yourself from burns. Repeat Steps 4 through 10 to solder your other rings.
  12. After all your rings have been soldered, quenched, and bathed in the pickle for at least a few minutes, pull them out with copper tongs, then rinse and dry them. Test the joints and resolder if necessary. If your joints are secure, it’s time to round them.
  13. Form: Drop one ring at a time onto a steel ring mandrel and hammer it repeatedly with the rawhide mallet. A little bit of magic happens here; the ring spins a bit on the mandrel as you hammer it, and soon you will have hammered all the way around and it has become round. Be careful not to hammer downward (from the smaller end toward larger end of the mandrel) or you’ll stretch it.
  14. Texture: I used a planishing hammer to add some texture to one band. For another, I filed in two directions with a checkering file to create a Florentine finish. I decided to leave the third ring smooth and shiny. Add whatever texture(s) you like or even mix textures on one. Add patina and darken the metal with liver of sulfur if you like.
  15. Finish, polish, and buff: Use a Dremel, a rotary tool of your choice and/or a buffing wheel to polish and buff as desired. This is the finishing touch on your ring, so be sure to stop at points to check your progress to see if you’re getting the desired results.

Many people have a special piece of jewelry they got from a department store or as a gift. The problem is, it’s not “real”.

What do I mean by real? Well, a “fake” ring is usually made from a metal that is not a precious metal, like copper or pewter. These base metals are oftentimes gold or silver plated to give it a precious-metal look.

The problem with these platings is that overtime they will wear off. You might even notice your skin starting to turn green where the metal comes into contact with the skin.

I have found that even though people know that their jewelry is not “real”, they absolutely love the design. This is often true with costume jewelry.

Rings that are plated usually show wear the quickest as they come into contact with more objects than earrings or a necklace would.

The bottom of the rings will be the first place you start to notice the plating wearing off. This will continue all over the ring until eventually the gold plating is either gone, or an incredibly uneven look is now obvious.

The bad news about this is there is no easy way to add the plating back on. A lot of goldsmiths (including myself) refuse to do gold or silver platings on jewelry as it’s pretty messy business. Besides, we are goldsmiths, not “fake gold” smiths!

How to make fake earringsThe original “fake” ring (2 of 2)

There are two main ways to turn a fake ring into a real one. The first would be to recreate the design using Computer Aided Design, or CAD software. The ring’s design is copied and rendered to be an exact match of the original. A 3D wax is printed from the CAD model and then cast into a precious metal!

The second way to replicate a piece of jewelry would be to make an actual mold of the the jewelry itself. Once the mold is made, it is wax injected to get the wax model for casting. From there it is the exact same process as before. The wax model is cast into any precious metal.

This ring was cast in 18kt yellow gold.

The gold plated ring on the left has more of an orange look to it. While plated rings can often do an ok job at replicating the color of real precious metal, nothing beats the real thing! There is a certain shine and luster that always accompanies real precious metal.

The best part of this project? The original center stone was preserved for the new ring!

How to make fake earringsGold Plated Vs. 18kt Yellow Gold (2 of 2)

The best part about a “real” ring is that it will be able to be polished time and time again to restore it’s brightness. It is not possible to polish plated jewelry without the plating coming off.

In addition, this 18kt yellow gold ring will not turn someone’s finger green!

How to make fake earringsAll of the original ring’s design was preserved in the new ring How to make fake earringsA solid 18kt gold ring that will last a lot longer than it’s plated counterpart

Now we can see that it is more than possible to take a “fake” or costume piece of jewelry and turn it into the real thing. The result is truly stunning!

Have you ever wondered if porcupine quills would make good jewelry? The lovely natural colors and smooth texture inspire jewelry designs, but you are a little leery of the sharp ends. Porcupine quills have been incorporated in jewelry for centuries. The material is delicate, so care must be taken when handling porcupine quills.

Select from several different sizes of quills. The smallest ones can be used in jewelry designs on cloth, such as cloth barrettes or shirt designs. Medium and large quills make great necklaces, bracelets, pendants and hair jewelry.

Cut the sharp points off the porcupine quills. Use well-sharpened scissors to prevent the fragile quill from splintering. Carefully file the point so it is smooth. Take care not to file too hard because the quill may crack.

Make a solution of soapy water in a bowl and gently wash the quill with a soft cloth. Dish-washing detergent with anti-grease agents work well, because the quill may be greasy. Rinse thoroughly. Dry the quill carefully also. Quills splinter very easily.

Dye the quill with food coloring or manufactured dyes available at craft supply stores. Follow the dye manufacturer’s instructions. Remember to dye the quill before you cut the tips off to get the best color quality. If you must dye a quill without tips, less dyeing time is required to get color. Do not subject the quills to boiling water during the dye process because it can cause splintering and cracking. Rinse the dye from the quill in cold water and air dry.

Decide the hanging length of your earrings. Choose your beads, quills, ear-wires and sterling-silver wire. You want small quills that fit desired earring length. Follow the cleaning and trimming instructions in Steps 2 and 3. Take jewelry wire cutters and cut sterling-silver wire several inches longer than the quill to provide room for the beads and ear-wires. Straighten the wire with your fingers. Use jewelry pliers to attach the ear-wire to the wire. Slide a bead onto the wire. Carefully thread the wire into one end of the quill until it comes out the other end. Attach a bead or two to the end of the wire. Use pliers to twist the wire into the desired shape to prevent the bead from slipping off. Repeat on the second earring.

You can make variations of the earring format by twisting wire around the quill or beads. The number of beads and types of beads used can create many different designs.

Select quills, beads, sterling silver wire and clasp for a bracelet. Clean the quills and cut off the sharp ends. Determine the bracelet length. Use wire cutters to cut the wire several inches longer than the desired length. Use pliers to twist the wire around the clasp opener. Slide a bead onto the wire. Thread the wire through a quill, followed by a bead. Repeat the pattern until the bracelet is complete. When you reach the end of the bracelet, use pliers to attach the clasp ring.

Make a hair stick with porcupine quills. Follow Steps 2 and 3 for cutting and cleaning the quill. Select a headpin and four beads. Place the beads on the headpin in the desired order. Cut a piece of sterling-silver wire with jewelry wire cutters. Use round-nose pliers to twist the wire around the beads in a design. Apply craft glue to the end of the headpin. Gently stick the headpin into one end of the porcupine quill. Let the hair stick air dry upright overnight.

Store quills in a cool, dry place. A plastic storage container is a good option.

How to Test Your Jewelry to See if It is Gold Plated

Inspect for Markings

How to make fake earrings

First, you’ll want to see if there are any markings on the jewelry. This is important because many metals from silver-plated to sterling silver or palladium look the same to an untrained eye. Most of the time, jewelry will have markings on them that indicate the type of metal and purity. For example, a 10k gold ring will have the marking for 10k directly on the ring. On earrings, it’ll be visible on the back. In necklaces and bracelets, it’ll be near the clasp on a tag or directly on the clasp or link.

Sterling Markings

  • The word “Sterling” will be stamped on the metal.
  • It could have “.925” as a stamp.
  • Some sterling silver has “925”, which means that the silver is 92.5 percent silver.

How to make fake earrings

Gold Identification Marks on Jewelry

  • Number followed by the letter “k” or the word “karat” will be stamped on the metal.
  • Gold that is 10k might have “.417” stamped on it as well.
  • 14 karat gold could have “.585” on it.
  • 18 karat gold might have “.750” stamped on the gold itself.

Other Markings

  • Platinum will be marked with the word “plat”, “platinum” as a stamp.
  • Sterling silver with gold plating will be marked Vermeil.
  • Manufacturers like Tiffany will have their stamp on each item, too.

This isn’t always proof, though, since manufacturers are only required to provide information about the metal content, but they may do that with a tag or an invoice after purchase. If you’ve received the jewelry used, you might have to test the piece to learn whether it’s real.

Check for Wear

In locations where the jewelry might have rubbed against the skin, check for discoloration. If a piece is gold-plated, the gold can wear and show the true metal underneath. Also, if you’re wearing a ring that turns your finger green or causes a weird reaction, it’s likely that the metal isn’t real gold or silver.

Slip the ring, bracelet, or necklace under a bright light. A plated piece of jewelry will have a visible tint in areas where it’s been worn. Fake metals that are meant to mimic silver or white gold will have a plating of rhodium over them. This is what makes them shiny and white, but when viewed under a light, the worn areas will look yellow.

How to make fake earrings

Magnet or Ceramic Test

When testing gold to see if it’s real, you can use a strong magnet to see if your gold is as pure as advertised. When an item is gold-plated, there’s metal underneath, which will cause the magnet to stick. Gold will not stick to the magnet. However, this isn’t always accurate because the jewelry could be made of a metal that doesn’t stick to magnets. All jewelry that sticks to the magnet is not gold.

For a ceramic test, you’ll need to have an unglazed ceramic plate. Drag a part of the jewelry across the ceramic. If it leaves a black mark across the surface, it’s not made of gold. A real gold piece of jewelry will show a gold streak.

Here is a video showing the magnet test for seeing if gold is real.

Bleach or Nitric Acid Reactions

In a small stainless steel container, place the jewelry that you want to test. Place a drop of nitric acid on the gold and watch for the reaction. If the item shows green, it’s is not true gold. It’s a gold plate. A gold reaction means that your item is brass. If there’s a milky reaction, it’s gold-plated over sterling silver. No reaction indicated a real piece of gold jewelry.

If you can’t get your hands on nitric acid, you can try a bleach test. It won’t cause a reaction in real gold, but fake gold will see a loss of color.

Fake or Costume Jewelry Won’t Have Real Stones

The gems that come in that costume or fake piece of jewelry won’t be real gemstones. They might be crystals, plastic, rhinestones or simulated gems. Once you’ve tested the metal itself, that should tell you whether the stone is possibly real or not. You definitely won’t see real stones in fake jewelry.

How to make fake earrings

After the above tests, if you’re still not sure if your jewelry is gold plated, you should take it to a jeweler to be tested. He or she will have professional tests that will determine whether your jewelry is real as well as the purity of the metal itself.

Want to wear fake braces to fool your friends or to look geek chic for a party? Check out how to make fake braces that look real, in this CraftCue article.

Important Tip!

Please remember that fake braces can be dangerous for kids as they can swallow the small parts by mistake. Be careful when wearing fake braces; always remove them when eating or drinking.

Whether you want to look geek chic for a party or need braces for a play, wearing fake braces is an excellent idea. But, why buy expensive braces when you can easily make them at home?

Yes, making fake braces at home is very simple and does not require much time either. Also, ready-made fake braces may contain lead or other toxic substances, so it is always better to make them yourself. We, at Buzzle, have two DIY methods to make fake braces that look real―(i) using paper clips; and (ii) craft wire.

Things you will need

  • Paper clips
  • Wire
  • Earring backs
  • Beads
  • Rubber band

Using Paper Clips

Take a clean paper clip and straighten it. Then slightly curve the ends to form a very wide “U” shape.

By placing this clip on your teeth, make markings according to the placement of your teeth. All the visible teeth should be marked.

Now put the beads on the marked spots in the clip. Stick them using non-toxic glue.

Use pliers to bend the ends, as shown in the figure. The end should be bent at a right angle.

Stick orthodontic wax to the ends. If orthodontic wax is not available, you can use chewing gum.

Your fake braces are ready! Put them in your mouth and position them properly so that you feel comfortable.

Using Craft Wire

Take a craft wire, and bend it to form a “U” shape. Using pliers, bend the ends to form hooks.

Now attach a rubber band between the hooks.

Stick colorful beads or earring backs on the wire according to the position of your teeth.

Stick orthodontic wax at the ends, and your fake braces are ready to flaunt!

Points to remember

  • Always use non-toxic glue.
  • To prevent poking, twist the ends.
  • If the ends feel sharp, use sandpaper to soften them.
  • Make sure that all the materials you use are clean.
  • These braces should not be used by children at any cost.
  • Be extra careful about not swallowing any parts.
  • Do not sleep with the fake braces.

You can wear these fake braces to lend authenticity to your nerd look this Halloween or at some costume party. Enjoy surprising your friends and family, and don’t forget to have a great time flaunting your new braces!

I came across this interesting post by Zell Lee over on Resin Obsession which shows how you can make real butterfly wing resin jewelry or charms such as this one for a bookmark. Most butterfly wing jewelry makers sandwich them between glass which is then soldered around the edges. That is because butterfly wings are incredibly fragile. You cannot glue them either as it will affect the wing colors.

So I liked Zell’s solution which is to laminate them first before doming with resin. Her way makes it fun as you can cut the laminated wings in many different shapes. You can also glue the laminated pieces into metal bezels if you prefer. No soldering needed!

Please do not catch wild butterflies and kill them. Many species are already in decline with habitat losses and possibly other causes.

But if you find dead ones in say your greenhouse or garden, then go ahead! I have planted several butterfly attracting plants in my garden – buddleia or butterfly bush, purple cone flowers and salvias. There are many other plants to consider.

There are also butterfly breeding farms and conservatories where you could perhaps source wings from dead butterflies. And there are pros and cons with such commercial industries.

David Anderson who commented on that tutorial post had this to say : “They are farmed and must be euthanized immediately upon setting their wings to produce an A1 specimen. A few morphos are net caught wild, which the seller will indicate. But most Papilio and Morphos are farmed. Consider this, no forest, no butterflies. Collecting and farming does not extinguish butterfly species, habitat destruction does. A commodity harvested from the forest gives financial incentive to the indigenous persons to conserve the tropical forest intact. Caterpillars at farms need lots of host plants, those come from the forest. Farming butterflies helps to conserve butterflies. All humans have a vocation for sustenance. If a person earns money from a protected forest through butterflies, that is a protected forest that won’t be clear cut. Yes, farmed butterflies are euthanized without experiencing a full life. But the forest that supports farmed butterflies also supports butterflies that fly naturally free.”

How to make fake earrings

Jewelry has the power to be the one little thing that makes you feel unique– Elizabeth Taylor. Jewelry like Lapis Lazuli is something that gives a sense of perfection to a woman because Lapis Lazuli is one of the most widely used stones that people are using in jewelry for several 100 years.

One can not easily distinguish between a real and a fake lapis lazuli, so today we will be talking about how to tell if lapis lazuli is real or not?

It is not easy enough to differentiate between a fake lapis lazuli and a real lapis lazuli because the world is changing rapidly and people are becoming smarter enough to make the fake copies and trap their customers.

The techniques used for making the fake copies of lapis lazuli are becoming truly exceptional with every passing day so it is not easy to tell whether the lapis lazuli that you are wearing is in actual real one or fake.

So let’s go through a proper procedure by which you will be able to distinguish a real lapis lazuli with a fake one.

Table of Contents

TIPS TO CHECK IF YOUR LAPIS LAZULI IS REAL:

Want to know, how to tell if lapis lazuli is real or fake? Here I am going to list down some of the amazing tips by which you will be able to tell whether your lapis lazuli is real or fake:

Analyze the Product by its Price First:

This is one of the primary tests that you can make to check whether the lapis lazuli that you are using is real or fake. So the very first thing that you have to do is to check carefully the price of your product.

Make sure that the product you are buying is not cheap in price because lapis lazuli never ever comes in cheap price even an ordinary necklace of lapis lazuli is like above 40-50 dollars and even higher than that.

So if you see any product of lapis lazuli which is quite reasonable in price then this is one of the first-ever indications that the product you are buying is not a real one.

Check whether the Lapis Lazuli you are buying can be easily Dyed or Not:

This is one of the widely used techniques that people are using for several years to make the fake copies of lapis lazuli. The sellers bring low-quality stones and then they apply dye over it to make it look like a top and quality oriented product.

In order to check whether your lapis lazuli is dyed or not, all you need is acetone or alcohol.

Now wipe your lapis lazuli with alcohol or acetone, at this stage of cleaning, if your stone leaves its original color then it is definitely a poor quality and fake product and if it does not change its color at the time of wiping, then that means it is an original and quality lapis lazuli.

Observe the Color of your product:

An indication of the fake lapis lazuli is that you will find it in a too much uniform blue color and it will obviously be cheaper in price.

A real lapis lazuli is found in two types of colors, either it is in a pale blue color which is commonly found but still not in a cheaper price or it is found in a royal blue color which is rare.

Carefully observe the Pattern of your Lapis Lazuli stone:

If you want to know that your lapis lazuli is real or not then this is one of the most important steps to check the quality and authenticity of your product. Before proceeding forward, you must carefully check the pattern that your stone has.

The original and quality lapis lazuli will surely have Golden flecks and Swirls of White Color as its beautiful pattern whereas the fake lapis lazuli is completely different from that of the real one due to the reason that it is greyish blue in color and the pattern of this fake lapis does not contain any golden flecks and white swirls on it.

Check Whether your Lapis easily gets Scratched or not:

This test can be termed as the hardness test for assuring the quality of your Lapis Lazuli, so in order to validate your product, you must perform this test.

An original lapis lazuli stone gets easily scratched by a knife or any other sharp object whereas a fake lapis lazuli stone does not get scratched by a knife or any other sharp object when applied on its surface.

Check Whether the Color of your Lapis Lazuli fades away or not:

You can simply test the quality of your Lapis Lazuli by testing it with Acetone. You can perform this test by simply rubbing acetone on your Lapis Lazuli stone. The color of an original lapis lazuli never fades away.

While rubbing acetone on your stone, you will feel the changes in color, if the color of your stone fades away then that means it is a fake and copy of lapis lazuli stone whereas if it’s color does not fade away then that means this is an original lapis lazuli.

Final ThoughtS:

With the help of the above-mentioned tips, you will be able to tell if the lapis lazuli that you are using is real or fake.

I hope the tips proved helpful to you. Every user must consider these tips and techniques while they purchase a Lapis Lazuli product because you should never compromise on the quality.

We are proud to create and distribute authentic meteorite rings here at Jewelry by Johan. Many customers come to us very excited that we can hand make a completely custom piece with a variety of materials in a ring, especially meteorite.

Meteorite is rare and can be difficult to find in custom jewelry pieces. But now that you’ve found it, how do you know that the meteorite in your jewelry is authentic meteorite? How do you know that a jeweler doesn’t just toss some random mix of metal into your wedding band?

The fake meteorite on this ring is razor-thin, wrinkled foil.

Notice how the coating above the foil hides the wrinkled texture that imitates Widmanstätten patterns.

Even if it was possible to slice meteorite this thinly, the price is still too good to be real!

The images above illustrate an example of a horribly-made, fake meteorite ring. We ordered it online from a not-to-be-named retailer who was claiming that this was real meteorite. The ring was just $39.99. We cut it apart to see the results of the inlay, which appeared to be foil paper with a clear, plastic protective layer over the top.

The ring was not only cheaply made, but it was clearly not real meteorite. We promise this is not what we do here at Jewelry by Johan. Here’s how you can verify any jewelry purchased from us or elsewhere is real meteorite.

Examples of Fake Meteorite Rings

These examples of fake meteorite rings look very uniform, with repeating patterns that look like wrinkled metal foil. There are also several contextual clues that can help you spot a fake meteorite ring, including various coatings and metal choices:

This ring has a repetitive pattern, which is unnatural.

On this fake meteorite ring, you can see that the foil “meteorite” is recessed underneath the metal edges.

This ring is plated gold metal. Plated rings are mass-produced for resellers, and 99% of the time are not authentic. Read more about plated rings in our blog!

This fake meteorite ring has a prominent clear layer protecting the foil underneath.

This ring’s fake meteorite inlay has been replicated with raised textures, which are not present on authentic meteorite patterns.

At $120, this ring’s price is too low to be authentic meteorite. Also, the term “immitation meteorite” is hidden in the description. Read the listing carefully!

Examples of Authentic Meteorite Rings:

These genuine meteorite rings may have a similar design or layout to the fake rings, but they are the real deal. Here are a few things to look for on real meteorite wedding rings:

The Widmanstätten patterns on this genuine meteorite ring are etched directly within the meteorite metal, and are not imitated with wrinkled foils. This is real Gibeon meteorite!

Looking carefully, you can see that this authentic meteorite wedding band features no coating or foil-like texture. Plus, the patterns are unique and do not repeat themselves. It’s the real deal!

Real meteorite rings can be crafted in intricate patterns, which is not something mass-produced and/or fake meteorite ring makers will spend time or effort to do.

This gold meteorite wedding band is made with solid gold. It is not plated like other cheaply-made fake meteorite rings.

Other Signs of Authentic Meteorite Jewelry

✅ Authentic Meteorite Jewelry May Include a Certificate of Authenticity

We value our customers and love providing them with custom, authentic meteorite jewelry that they can cherish forever. Our meteorite comes straight from the source, usually Gibeon Meteorite. We send Certificates of Authenticity for every type of meteorite we use in our items so that you know where your meteorite originated from and have peace of mind that it’s the real deal. Learn more about meteorite types we use in our items in our Education Center.

✅ Authentic Meteorite is Magnetic

Another way to quickly identify if you have a real piece of meteorite is by checking with a magnet. Since about 99% of meteorite is magnetic, real meteorite will be attracted to the magnet. If your jewelry is not magnetic, it is not likely to be real meteorite.

✅ Real Meteorite Has the Potential to Rust

Because meteorite is an iron-based material, it does have the potential to rust. If you’re lucky, the meteorite in your jewelry might not rust at all, but the majority of real meteorite does tend to rust over time. The good news is, there is a way to care for it in order to prevent it from rusting. All of our rings include instruction on how to properly care and prolong the longevity of your item. One of the benefits of buying from Jewelry by Johan is that we offer a free Re-Etching Service (a $75 value). The Re-Etching eliminates rust and exposes the meteorite pattern that was underneath. Contact us today if your meteorite jewelry needs to be re-etched, or order our Meteorite Care Kit for touch-ups at home!

Our Meteorite De-Corroder and Wax Polish easily removes rust and prevents it from reappearing. Check out our quick care kit video to see how easy it is to remove.

✅ Exposure to Strong Acids will Damage Real Meteorite

Meteorite cannot withstand exposure strong acids, including hydrochloric acid, nitric acid, and sulfuric acid. Needless to say, testing your jewelry’s reaction to these puts it at risk of damage, so we recommend using the methods previously mentioned to verify its authenticity first. If your jewelry comes in accidental contact with any of the strong acids listed and does not damage, it is most likely not real meteorite.

Wondering how to tell real pearls from fake ones? Nowadays, you can easily find various types and shapes of pearls on the market and you should know how to identify real pearls. Not all pearls are real pearls. There are a lot of vendors who claim that they are offering authentic pearls and instead they are selling you plastic beads. With the increased number of online pearl stores, no wonder you question yourself more than once whether the pearls you want to buy are real. Therefore, you need to know how to identify fake pearls and what to do if you get the feeling you’re getting tricked.

We know how upsetting is to find out that you spent a lot of money on a product that is actually fake. You invest your time, money, hopes in something that you want to last forever and to create a beautiful memory. Pearls are considered a luxury item and many are tempted to buy them at more affordable prices. But imagine you want to offer a real pearl necklace to your loved one and you go to a jewelry store that sells impressively good-looking fake pearls. You don’t know this and you get tricked. And the person who receives it knows how to tell real pearls. What do you do in this case? Do you apologize and take it back? What if she does not want to hurt your feelings and says nothing about it?

Don’t let yourself seduced the next time you intend to purchase pearls in a flea market or from sellers who claim to have authentic pearls. Take your time and investigate them discretely by following our steps! After all, you do want to take care of your money and you want to own a timeless piece of jewelry.

Fake pearls or artificial pearls are made out of unnatural materials. The human intervention dictates the final result. Glass, plastic, ceramic, shell are various types of material sources that man uses in order to create imitation pearls. The bead is then coated with a varnish of fish skin to simulate that luster or iridescence.

How artificial pearls are made?

Technology and innovation have led manufacturers to improve their creation processes. Therefore, there are various ways to make false pearls: waxed glass beads imitation, solid glass beads imitation, plastic beads coated imitation, imitation pearl beads, shell powder synthetic beads.

How can you tell a real pearl from fake? Here are nine easy, non-invasive and non-damaging ways that will help you check your pearls.

1. The first feature that helps us on how to tell real pearls from fake is their surface. Real pearls have like a fingerprint-like surface ridges in them, so they are not identical or perfectly spherical. If you look very closely at them even under a magnifying glass you will notice these surface ridges and the specific quality to each pearl, whereas fake pearls they all of them look identical and have smooth surfaces. As a result, this is a great and easy way to tell the difference between imitation and real pearls. Basically, in the case of fake pearls, they all look the same.

2. The second step that will help you identify fake pearls is to look at the overtone color. All real pearls should have an overtone color that’s very lustrous, whereas fake pearls have a dull, milky sort of color.

3. The next tip on how to check pearls is that real pearls are reflective. So if you hold them into light, you should see a little reflection of the light in them. Fake pearls are dull, therefore they won’t be reflective like that.

How to make fake earrings

4. The next tip on how to identify real pearls would be a slight difference in their size. If you look at a strand of real pearls and check each individual pearls and you actually notice that each one of them has a slightly different size and shape and texture and that is because they occur in nature. Whereas a fake pearl would have the same size and shape. They would all look identical.

5. Further, if you want to check if your pearls are real, check the drill holes. Real pearls tend are generally drilled from both sides, to meet in order to meet in the center. Fake pearls tend to have larger or even straighter holes, which gives them a lower value.

How to make fake earrings

6. A good way to tell whether the pearls are real of fake is what we like to call the body heat test. Real pearls are cold to the touch. Their temperatures are very interesting. When you haven t put them on yet, and you touch them, they feel cold. But when you put them on, they sort of warm to your body temperature, whereas fake pearls generally tend to remain at room temperature, so if you touch them they will feel about room temperature.

7. Another aspect to take into account when identifying real pearls is their weight. Real pearls are heavier than fake pearls. Fake pearls light. If you pick up a strand of them, they are going to feel really light, whereas real pearls are kind of heavy to your hand.

8. It may sound a bit strange, but using your teeth is a good tip on how to tell real pearls from fake. If you were to take a string of pearls and run them along your teeth, if they have a gritty feeling, then they would actually be real pearls. If they have a smooth feeling, they are certainly fake pearls. We only recommend doing this at home in case you want to check your own pearls and not inside a jewelry store or a public market.

9. Finally, there is the viscosity or the fluidity test. Genuine pearls are silky to touch, while the imitation pearls don’t feel smooth. They have a sticky feeling when rolling or sliding. Consequently, they won’t give you the nice sensation that only real pearls are able to.

In conclusion, these are the easiest and quickest ways to find out if your pearls are fake or not. We are aware that in some cases you can’t always follow these steps, but hopefully, we gave you some useful tips. Try to spend more time checking your pearls and always make sure you’re buying them from a certified seller. Reviews are also helpful, so take some time to read them as well. On our website, you can find reviews under each pearl item. Explore our store and purchase your pearls without worries!

The old, long, tedious way to preserve your cheap jewelry was to apply a coat of clear nail polish to it. But there is an easier, faster way. And it takes only seconds to do.

By spraying a clear protective coating, namely a rust repellent such as Rust-oleum Crystal Clear Enamel, or Krylon Crystal Clear on your fashion jewelry, you can make your jewelry last for months, even years to come. beauty supply stores, or from anyplace that sells beautiful fashion jewelry. I found that my fake gold jewelry was tarnishing too quickly, sooooo I went to Walmart and found the Krylon clear protected gloss to spray on my jewelry so that it can stay gold for a longer time. And it has. It looks just as beautiful and new as the day I bought them. Yours will too if you take a few minutes to coat them using a protective rust repellent.

Also, if you are allergic to cheap jewelry, the protective coating can stand as a barrier between your skin and the jewelry. Although we can’t make any guarantees that you won’t have an allergic reaction, even after using the crystal clear glaze, you may want to test coating your jewelry for yourself to determine whether or not you will have an allergic reaction before deciding to invest in large amounts of cheap jewelry. Most people with allergies have found they do not have a negative reaction if they place a protective glaze on their jewelry.

If you are allergic to fake jewelry, here’s a testimony from someone who is allergic to cheap jewelry, but can now wear it because of Krylon Crystal Clear.

I hope this helps you as much as it did me because my fake jewelry has lasted longer than ever! Good luck!

How to make fake earrings

You got yourself a pair of earrings or plan on buying a pair. You want to know if the earrings are real diamonds or fake. It’s always good to be able to tell the difference in a real pair of diamond earrings. I want to give a few tips on how to tell if they are real, as well as some other valuable information.

Different Types of Diamond-Realness Testing

There are several different ways to see if a diamond is real and then there are some myths that are false. I want to break down some simple at-home steps below.

The Old Fog Test

The fog test has been around for some time. It has proven correct on several occasions. It is simple and requires little skill or effort and it’s something you can do at home.

Here are the steps:

  • Wipe the stone off with a clean rag.
  • Hold the stone by the stem of the earring.
  • Put the stone in front of your mouth and fog the diamond, like you would glass or a mirror.

The Results Should Be:

  • The diamond should not fog up.
  • If fog does appear it should dissipate in a matter of seconds.
  • This should occur every time you try this test.
  • If they do fog up, then your diamond earrings may be fake.

A Jewelers Loupe Works Amazingly Well!

A jeweler’s loop has been around a long time too. It has been able to detect real diamonds for ages. The only issue using this test is that you must know what you are looking for and this test is more so a back up to other tests. You can buy a Jewelers loupe for under $20.

Things to Look For:

  • Imperfections. Almost every diamond has them.
  • Flecks.
  • Minerals.
  • Slight color changes.

Things to Note:

  • There are some diamonds that do not have imperfections. These are rare. All in all, don’t count your diamond out just yet!
  • Lab-Grown diamonds do not have imperfections. They are still diamonds but they are not naturally occurring diamonds.

The Earring Setting Mount Says a Lot.

The earring’s setting mount tells if a diamond is real or not quickly. Think about it. Who would set a natural diamond in a cheap setting mount? No reputable jeweler. That just runs the risk of losing your diamond. With that, check the mount.

Here is How to check the mount:

  • A visual stamp indicates if something is gold, silver or platinum.
  • They are usually on the stem of the earring.
  • If it states CZ, your diamonds are not what you think! They will be Cubic Zirconia.

WikiHow.com tells how to do all three of these steps above to check for real diamonds. It’s worth checking out their website.

More Professional Testing

You can always take your earrings to a jeweler or even a pawnshop to have them tested. This can take a lot of time if you have a lot of earrings you want to test out. If you plan on testing diamonds more often and want a more reliable source you can try some of these steps below. Always use safety.

Heating the Diamond

You can try heating up the stone. If it is fake it will shatter. This can be dangerous so make sure you use all the proper safety gear, and no one is around to get injured.

Here is How:

  • Heat the stone for 40 seconds using a set of needle-nose pliers, fire safe gloves, and a propane torch
  • Drop the stone in cold water.

Results:

  • A diamond will not shatter. Diamonds are the strongest material on earth and will not break under the pressure of heat and expansion as with glass or other materials.

Here’s a result for a fake diamond:

If you don’t have a propane torch, then you can try a lighter:

Using A Thermal Conductivity Probe

This is a bigger word for meter really. It is used to determine the thermal conductivity of the gem. Diamonds disperse heat effectively. When using this meter, it can quickly tell if the gem is a genuine diamond or not. This requires you to be a professional to use though. It is the most effective.

Examination Under a Microscope

Testing a gem under a microscope takes a lot of skill and practice. This is a great tool to learn if you plan on handling diamonds a lot. At a magnification of 1200x, you can see all the imperfections and little details that real diamonds carry.

Some Final Thoughts on the Matter.

Every diamond is unique, and each carries its own flaws. They are a beautiful gem that can be easily identified with the right information and the right tools. Make sure you do all your research and before long you will be able to spot a real diamond set of earrings with ease.
