When the TONER LOW message appears, the following LED indications is shown on the control panel.
The Toner LED will turn on for 2 seconds and off for 3 seconds.

The error message TONER LOW indicates that the toner cartridge is approaching the end of its expected life, but the cartridge has not reached its end of life. It is recommended that the toner cartridge continue to be used if the print quality is still good. You should replace the toner cartridge when you feel the print quality is no longer acceptable or when the Toner LED is on or flashing.

However, it is a good idea to have a new genuine Brother toner cartridge on hand and have it ready for when the REPLACE TONER status is indicated.

The Brother machine has separate consumables the toner cartridge and the drum unit. Verify you replace only the Toner Cartridge and not the drum unit. If you want to know their difference, refer to “What is the difference between the toner cartridge and the drum unit?”

NOTE: Brother strongly recommends that customers use only genuine Brother drum units and/or toner cartridges. Each Brother laser printer is designed to work at pre-set temperatures that are matched exactly to each of our individual toner formulations. Each individual component is designed to work with the other to ensure quality and reliability. Using non-Brother supplies may affect the hardware performance, print quality, and machine reliability. The Brother limited warranty does not apply to any problem that is caused by the use of third party drum units, toner cartridges, or toner.

If you believe the TONER LOW message appeared too soon, consider the following:

The original toner cartridge that came with the machine may be either a starter, standard or high yield toner cartridge. The yield of the toner cartridge depends on the model and country where you bought the machine.

  • The number of pages that can be printed with a toner cartridge is affected by several factors, including paper size, number of pages per print job, amount of print on each page, font size, and print content, such as graphics, charts, etc. A typical printed document is one letter-sized (215.9 x 279.4 mm (8.5 x 10.9 in.)) page with 4%-5% print coverage, such as a small memo or letter approximately 1,500 characters. Print jobs with large text fonts, graphics, charts, and/or large amounts of solid black coverage will use much more toner and will shorten the life of the toner.)
    * The approximate toner yield is in accordance with ISO/IEC 19752.
  • The moment you notice that the pages being printed by your laser printer have streaks across the page, you should realize that it may be time to replace the toner cartridge. In this article, we tell you the steps involved in changing a cartridge.

How to Replace a Toner Cartridge and Drum Unit in a Brother Laser Printer.

If you have not replaced the toner cartridge or drum unit in your Brother printer for some time, you may have forgotten the process and how you need to separate the toner cartridge from the drum unit.

Below is our quick guide. We’ll show you how to install both for a selection of popular Brother laser printers. Installation steps do vary slightly depending on the printer and the consumable you are replacing but the process is pretty straightforward once you have an understanding of how the toner and drum unit work.

To begin we will start by reviewing each of the consumables so you know exactly what you are putting in your printer.

A quick look at Brother Toner Cartridges and Drum Units

The toner cartridge and drum unit work together to produce a print. The toner cartridge holds the toner powder and the drum unit is an electrically charged cylinder that transfers that toner powder to paper to create text and images.

Brother sells the toner cartridge and drum unit as two separate consumables. The cartridge fits into the drum unit and both are installed together as one unit into your printer.

Not all Brother printers accept an extra high yield option so be sure to double check your printer manual to verify what your printer will accept.

The drum unit is one size and is compatible with any of the cartridge sizes. Both the toner and drum will need to be replaced overtime, but the toner cartridge will always needing changing first.

There is no requirement to replace the drum each time a toner cartridge is replaced.

How to replace a toner cartridge in a laser printer

A leaking printer toner cartridge is the bane of many laser printer users. A leaking/streaking toner can imply a powdery mess inside the printer, a stained piece of clothing, or streaked printouts.

Basically, a leaking or streaking toner can ruin your day.

If your toner cartridge is leaking or has leaked inside the machine, it will need to be fixed or replaced.

Before we dive into the details of how to fix a leaking toner cartridge, let us first understand why it is spilling toner in the first place.

Damaged Toner Cartridges Can Experience Leakage Problems

Toner cartridges comprise of dozens of moving parts. All of these small components must work in unison so that your cartridge performs as expected.

If one or more of these moving parts aren’t functional, it could lead to toner leakage inside the printer.

Toner cartridges can also get damaged while in transit or due to accidental falls. A damaged cartridge can spill out toner or produce prints with streaks.

If any part of your toner cartridge or its photoconductor (the component with green or blue roller) is visibly damaged, the cartridge will need to be replaced.

Leakage Problems with Refilled Toner Cartridges

Some people refill toner cartridges at home or a local office supplies store. Refilling ink or toner cartridges is a bad idea.

Refilled cartridges don’t fit in properly in the laser printer and can leak easily.

During refilling, you may end up damaging the blade, fuser, photoconductor, or other components.

There are better ways to save money on replacement toner cartridges.

You can, for instance, buy compatible toner cartridges for your Brother or HP laserjet instead.

Your Drum Unit could be the Culprit

Toner leakage inside the printer or vertical streaks on printouts can be due to a faulty drum unit.

Your laser printer’s drum unit may also be past its useful life.

Depending upon whether your printer uses a separate or an integrated drum unit (with toner cartridge), you will need to get the necessary replacement.

A separate drum unit is more likely to be the culprit if you notice toner leakage in an old laserjet with a recently installed toner cartridge all of a sudden.

It may be a sign that your drum unit needs to be replaced. Other signs of drum failures include equally-distant smears or lines of toner across printouts or dots that appear evenly down the page.

    Recovery Blade May be Damaged

Recovery blades are thin plastic blades that direct residual toner onto rollers.

If the recovery blade is damaged, it will result in random dots all over your printouts.

This is referred to as ‘flicking toner.’

With a damaged recovery blade, toner continues to accumulate on top of the blade. Excess toner accumulation eventually appears as if the toner cartridge is leaking.

So, you need to get the recovery blade repaired or replaced to fix the issue.

    Cleaning a Toner Spill

Remember not to use the standard vacuum cleaner to quickly remove the stains.

First, excess pressure can damage your laserjet. Second, toner powder conducts electricity and can damage (short-circuit) your vacuum cleaner.

    Cleaning a Leaking Cartridge

In case the cartridge is damaged, toss it in the bin.

    Final Words

Loose toner powder can damage your laser printer in many ways.

So, it is important to remove excess toner and replace or fix a leaking/streaking toner cartridge as soon as possible. It’s a part of the standard laser printer maintenance routine.

In some cases, you may also need to replace other components (as described above) to fix toner leakage.

The first time I ever had to think about changing a toner cartridge for a laser printer, I felt overwhelmed. My father had just given me his HP Laser Jet 4000n, and after a few uses I saw the change toner indicator light blinking. I was very comfortable changing out ink cartridges in a jet printer; however, a laser printer seemed so foreign to me that I procrastinated switching out the old toner.

One morning before an interview, I had to print out several copies of my resume. I was already running late so I was frantic when I clicked the print button and a change toner message appeared. Every time that message blinked on the screen, I felt my anxiety level increase; I was being forced to leave my comfort zone by a machine! Luckily, I had a spare toner cartridge on the shelf. Finally, without a minute to spare, I put aside my fears and changed the toner cartridge. Remarkably, the process was quicker and easier than replacing ink jet cartridges!

Below are the steps on how to replace a laser printer toner cartridge:

    1) Lift the laser printer’s lid exposing the toner cartridge. Look for a handle that will assist in removing the cartridge. Be careful not to get the toner powder on your hands or clothes. Examine the cartridge for its make and model number and jot it down. Dispose of the cartridge or recycle it.

    2) Based on your budget, decide whether you want to spend the money for an original manufacturer toner or an OEM compatible toner (less expensive choice). Then choose whether you want to purchase it online or at a local office supply store. Either choice, be sure to use the make and model information previously jotted down.

    3) When the new toner is in hand, remove it from the box, gently shake it, remove plastic covering, and remove protective tape.

    4) Insert new cartridge into toner seat aligning arrows. Gently push cartridge until it snaps into place.

    5) Close the cover and print a test page to verify that it is installed correctly. Congrats! It is now ready for you to use!

How to replace a toner cartridge in a laser printer

There are different styles of toner cartridges used in laser printers, but you can refill most of them in similar ways. Toner in a laser cartridge is used up over time, as prints are made, and you can replace the cartridges to get more toner into the printer. There are some toner cartridges, however, that can be easily refilled rather than simply replaced. These typically have a refill hole that you can open up to fill them, though doing so without proper training can create messes and potentially void the warranty on your printer.

How to replace a toner cartridge in a laser printerA laser printer toner cartridge.

    Removing the Cartridge

One of the first things you usually need to do to refill a toner cartridge is remove it from your laser printer. Read the instruction manual that came with your device to determine the best way to remove the cartridge from it. This is usually quite simple, though you may need to press a release button or move a lever that normally keeps it in place. You should also be careful of any toner on the outside of the cartridge, as it can easily stain your clothes and the area around your printer.

    Cartridges with Refill Holes

Some toner cartridges are designed to be easily refilled, often having holes in them into which toner can be poured. These holes are usually clearly visible on the cartridge and typically have a stopper or plug that you can remove. Refill kits provide toner in small bottles that include funnels or narrow tips, making it easy for you to place the tip into the refill hole without spilling it. The toner itself is powder so fine that it moves much like a liquid, and it can easily be poured into the cartridge.

    Making a Refill Hole

There are also toner cartridges that do not have refill holes in them, since they are not designed to be refilled, only replaced. You may be able to create a hole in such a cartridge by using a hot object to melt its plastic case. Some refill kits suggest that you do this, but you should be very careful about doing so. Such changes are likely to void any warranty you have on a printer cartridge, which means you will need to pay for a replacement cartridge if you damage it. Improper placement of the hole can also result in toner spilling out inside of your printer, causing damage that might not be covered by your warranty since the hole you created likely violated it.

    Choosing the Right Toner

When refilling toner cartridges, it is important to choose the right type of toner for your particular printer. There are guides you can follow when ordering a refill kit to ensure the toner is compatible with your machine, and the manual that came with your printer may also indicate what toner to use. If the manufacturer of your printer sells refill kits for toner cartridges, it may be best to use one of these to ensure you get the right toner and equipment for your hardware. Once the cartridge is refilled and the hole properly sealed up, simple replace it in your machine as instructed in the owner’s manual.

    Calibration and Resetting Counts

Many laser printers need to be properly calibrated and toner cartridges within them must be aligned prior to printing. After you refill and replace the cartridge, be sure to run any setup procedures as appropriate to ensure clean, aligned printing. There may also be a page counter on the cartridge that needs to be reset to indicate to the printer that the toner has been replaced. The instruction manual for your device should indicate how to do this.
