Trafficking is the use of force, threat of force, fraud or coercion to recruit, harbor, transport, provide or obtain any person for labor or commercial sex or to cause a person under 18 to engage in a commercial sex act.

Human trafficking is a modern-day form of slavery involving the illegal trade of people for exploitation or commercial gain.

Every year, millions of men, women, and children are trafficked in countries around the world, including the United States. It is estimated that human trafficking generates many billions of dollars of profit per year, second only to drug trafficking as the most profitable form of transnational crime.

Traffickers use force, fraud, or coercion to lure their victims and force them into labor or commercial sexual exploitation. They look for people who are susceptible for a variety of reasons, including psychological or emotional vulnerability, economic hardship, and lack of a social safety net, natural disasters, or political instability. The trauma caused by the traffickers can be so great that many may not identify themselves as victims or ask for help, even in highly public settings.

Together, the Middle District of Alabama United States Attorney’s Office (MDAL-USAO) and members of the task force aim to serve the Middle District of Alabama collaboratively by identifying victims, serving victims, and prosecuting human trafficking cases.

Prevent, identify, investigate, disrupt, and prosecute human trafficking crimes.

Dismantle any criminal organization that promotes or participates in the commission of human trafficking crime.

Promote a coordinated approach to the provision of services for victims of human trafficking at the federal, state, and local levels.

Provide federal leadership and direction to improve victim services.

Coordinate victim services effectively through collaboration with victim service providers in the district.

Conduct outreach, awareness activities, and resources for the public.

Testimonial

“I joined the sex-ed program in Texas to gain more insight into the issues present in health education. Stemming from some of the experiences I’ve seen in my public health work, I wanted to learn more about sex-education in a population that affected me. I didn’t have any expectations going into the program, but I left with an invaluable experience that I can bring back to my community. From the people I got to work with to the conversations I’ve been able to have, I got the chance to enter a space where I can live and learn from my peers. The program helped me be a better advocate for people in every direction, but it also gave me creative control to express myself in a way I’ve never done before. I got to be surrounded by a group of amazing friends that I could be open and honest with, and I felt heard in their presence. I’d recommend anyone to give the program a shot and see what is in store for them. It is a difficult process, but incredibly rewarding. I’d do it all over again if I could.”

Founded in 1973, the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force Foundation (NGLTF) works to build the grassroots power of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community. We do this by training activists, equipping state and local organizations with the skills needed to organize broad-based campaigns to defeat anti-LGBT referenda and advance pro-LGBT legislation, and building the organizational capacity of our movement. Our Policy Institute, the movement’s premier think tank, provides research and policy analysis to support the struggle for complete equality and to counter right-wing lies. As part of a broader social justice movement, we work to create a nation that respects the diversity of human expression and identity and creates opportunity for all.

How to Act Now

Tell Your Senators to Pass the Equality Act

On May 17, 2019 the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Equality Act. Now we need the U.S. Senate to act! The Equality Act will add sexual orientation and gender identity to existing civil and human rights laws while expanding protections for existing protected classes.

Help Overturn the Hyde Amendment

The EACH Woman Act is a bold effort to reverse the Hyde Amendment’s ban on abortion coverage through Medicaid. Pro-choice lawmakers in both chambers of Congress introduced legislation on March 12, 2019 to block the Hyde Amendment and other bans on insurance coverage for abortion care.
