Typically, it is easier to find work in a field that you have experience in. However, what happens if you don’t have any relevant experience in a field that you want to work in? Let’s take a look at what you need to do if you want to get a hospitality job despite your lack of a resume.

1. How to Get a Job in Hospitality

If you are looking for career opportunities in the hospitality industry, it may be a good idea to start by getting a college degree or other relevant certifications. Employers love workers who have a formal education because they tend to have an understanding of how the industry works today and how to leverage that understanding to increase the company’s bottom line.

In addition to a college degree, in some country, you may need to have certifications such as RMLV certificate, a mandatory course in Queensland, Australia – which must be completed by the licensee or an applicant for an Approved Managers Licence for a licensed premise or course like RSA refresher training to ensure you are aware of their obligations and that in-house training particularly in reference to RSA.

In most cases, you can either get this training on the job or at some point after you have been hired but before your first shift. It may be a good idea for business owners in the hospitality field to undergo this training to help them relate to their workers.

2. Job Opportunities in Hospitality Are Plentiful

There are plenty of job opportunities for those who are looking for part-time work, a full-time job, or a full-time job that may lead to a career. As there are relatively high levels of turnover in restaurants, bars, and hotels, there are almost always positions available for those who meet the legal requirements to hold a job.

As a hospitality worker, you will need to show a willingness to learn and a willingness to offer quality customer service. For the most part, this means smiling when addressing customers and talking to them in a courteous and respectful manner.

The goal is to treat them well and make them enjoy their experience. If you can do that, you should have no trouble getting entry-level work.

3. Connections Can Help You Find Work

If you lack experience or any type of formal education, you may be able to get a job based on who you know. For instance, if you know someone who owns a restaurant or stays at a hotel in town, that person may be willing to hire you or put in a good word that may lead to getting a job.

It is important that you don’t embarrass anyone who does vouch for you or give you an opportunity in the industry. Therefore, make it a point to show up on time, do everything that is asked of you and do everything possible to represent the company in a positive well wherever you go.

4. Showcase Relevant Skills That Could Translate Well

In some cases, it may be a good idea to show that you have skills that could translate well in the hospitality industry. For instance, you may want to mention any previous customer service jobs that you have held or the fact that you once ran your own company. This may indicate that you have the skills necessary to be successful as a bartender, a hotel front desk employee, or a waitress at a restaurant.

If you are going to highlight previous jobs when applying for a hospitality position, make sure that those jobs were in the recent past. Showing a job gap may cause an employer to ask questions that may actually hurt you in your quest to find work.

5. Stay Determined In Your Search for Work

There is a chance that your application could be denied or thrown away without ever receiving an interview. However, this is not necessarily an indication that you should give up.

Instead, try to get feedback from the employers that you applied to in an effort to learn why you weren’t chosen for a job and what you can do to get better. This may help you either refine your pitch to employers or help you understand what skills you may need to eventually land your first hospitality job.

While it can be tough to find work without experience, it is not impossible to do so. This is especially true in the hospitality field where many workers are college students or others who are hired on a part-time or seasonal basis. However, you choose to find work, make sure that you prominently showcase your skills and personality to ensure that employers know how well you can do if given the chance.

Hotel maintenance workers are well-rounded helpers who offer preventative maintenance and repairs to all areas of the hotel, including its exterior, heating and cooling systems, plumbing, electrical systems, floors, walls and furniture. They have the skills to use a variety of equipment and the ability to work a physically demanding role that can demand on-call work to handle emergencies. Since this career requires a wide repair and maintenance background with varied duties each day, working in hotel maintenance can be a good fit if you are a jack-of-all-trades and like doing different tasks each day on the job.

Job Description

Working in hotel maintenance, you are responsible for keeping the hotel maintained and fixing any errors that are needed. This can include putting in new carpets in guest rooms, repairing holes in walls, changing settings on cooling and heating equipment, putting new light bulbs in the hotel’s outdoor lamps and performing general cleaning tasks inside and outside the hotel’s building. Other hotel maintenance duties and responsibilities include repainting walls, fixing broken furniture, fixing minor electrical issues and making faucets stop leaking. You can expect physically demanding work that includes using tools and equipment and moving around much of the day, including having to climb ladders, lift heavy items and crawl in tight spaces when necessary.

Education Requirements

A high school education with classes in repair and maintenance can prepare you to be a hotel maintenance professional. These courses should give you a well-rounded background in topics like plumbing, electricity, air conditioning and heating systems, wall repair, carpentry and cleaning. The hotel that employs you may also provide job shadowing and training to teach you common maintenance tasks. Depending on what type of hotel maintenance tasks you do, tour state may require you to pursue additional certification or licensure.

As of May 2017, general maintenance and repair workers got paid a median wage of $37,670 a year, with half making less and the other half getting more. Pay varied significantly from below $22,820 for the bottom 10 percent of workers to over $61,720 for the top 10 percent. Travel accommodation ranked third in employment level and offered workers an average of $34,730 a year, coming after $37,180 for real estate and $42,750 for local government.

Industry

The BLS reported in May 2017 that around 85,000 of an estimated 1.3 million general maintenance and repair workers found employment in travel accommodation, where they worked in hotels, resorts, rental homes, hostels and other lodgings. While some maintenance professionals offer services to multiple facilities at a time, hotel maintenance workers tend to stay at the same facility for their work shifts. They often work irregular hours and may come in on their days off, if the hotel needs an emergency repair.

Years of Experience

Working as a hotel maintenance leader can lead to raises and promotion opportunities based on how many years you have worked in maintenance. While PayScale.com did not report salary ranges by experience for hotel maintenance workers, it did show a pay range in May 2018 of between $21,023 and $41,244 that will depend on your experience. To have a more generous income, you can seek promotion to a hotel maintenance manager role, which PayScale.com listed as having a higher pay range of $25,491 to $49,377.

Job Growth Trend

The BLS reports a good outlook for all general maintenance workers between 2016 and 2026. This occupation will grow not only by 8 percent, but also it will feature many job openings to replace retiring maintenance workers. The greatest demand is for maintenance professionals who make home repairs, although new building construction and maintenance needed for older buildings also will fuel growth. You can expect better prospects, if you have at least a year of experience doing maintenance work.

If you are staying in a hotel and need Internet access but don’t have a wireless card, there are a couple of other ways to get on the Internet. If your hotel offers Internet access, they often offer wired access through an Ethernet jack in your hotel room. If your hotel doesn’t offer the Internet at all, you can take a few extra steps and connect with a dial-up connection using a standard telephone cable.

Locate the telephone jack in your hotel room. If it contains a separate Ethernet jack, your hotel likely offers high-speed Internet. (The Ethernet jack and the corresponding cable, will be slightly larger than a standard telephone jack.)

If the hotel room supports Ethernet, use an Ethernet cable to connect your computer to the hotel room’s Ethernet jack. (If you don’t have an Ethernet cable, the front desk may have one available.) Turn on your computer; it should automatically detect the Internet connection through the Ethernet cable.

If the hotel does not offer an Ethernet connection, connect your computer to the telephone jack using a standard telephone cord. Unplug the hotel phone to do this, if necessary. In this manner, you can use a dial-up connection to connect to the Internet.

Make note of the hotel’s procedure for dialing out of the room (for example, dialing “9” before the number). This should be printed on or near the telephone. Ensure your computer is set up with the dial-up information for the Internet service provider you use at home.

Open your computer’s dial-up connection, and type in whatever extra numbers the hotel requires for dialing out.

Be aware of any charges you might incur before trying to access the Internet. Some hotels offer free Internet access, but some charge a fee. Also, if you use a dial-up connection, you may incur charges from the hotel, even for local calls. If possible, to save on costs, contact your Internet service provider for a toll-free number or local access number for the city where you are staying. If none of the above options works, check with your hotel to see if they have a business center with a computer. If they do, it’s likely they also offer Internet access at that computer.

Do not attempt to use a dial-up connection if your hotel uses a digital telephone line. You can burn out your computer modem by connecting it to a digital telephone. Check with your hotel first.

Hotel front desk employees (also known as guest services employees) are responsible for making sure each guest has a pleasant experience at a hotel. Tasks typically involve checking in and checking out guests, taking reservations, and answering any questions guests may have.  

You don’t need a college degree or any relevant experience to be a hotel front desk employee, although an associate’s degree in business, administration, or hospitality can help.
