Learn how to make pop up cards for any occasion with this simple pop up card template. Use the included illustrations or make your own to make your 3D card totally personalized and perfect for giving!
What do you need to make a 3D pop up card….
All you need for these 3D pop up cards is paper and something to add color with! That makes these 3D cards an inexpensive and easy project for kids of any age!
You can use any kind of paper- copy weight paper, printed or colored scrapbook paper, etc. We used cardstock in white and colors. Cardstock folds crisply and is heavy enough to hold the “pop ups” nicely! You’ll also need to gather up a pair of scissors, glue stick, and something to color with. Crayons, markers, or colored pencils will all work well! That’s it- easy!
Constructing a 3D pop up card…
The basic idea here is that you will create two cards, one slightly smaller than the other. In the illustration above shows a standard 8.5 x 11 piece of colored cardstock cut in half. The white paper inside is slightly smaller than the outer layer and contains the actual “pop up” or three dimensional elements of the card!
Fold the white card stock in half. Starting on the fold cut three sets of cuts that extend about two inches into the body of the card. Do not cut these tabs off. These are the portion of card that will bed away from the card and “POP!”
The dimensions for these tabs is completely optional. You can have has many tabs as you want and change up their size every time!

While you can make a pop up card any shape or any size I’ve provided you with a super easy pop up card template here. Assembling your printable pop-up card…
Once you’ve popped the tabs out use a glue stick to apply glue everywhere BUT the tabs. Glue the inner piece of the pop up card to the colorful outside portion, allowing the tabs to pop out and fold when the card is folded. Now the technical portion of your card is done and it’s time to add some personality.
You can literally add anything to these tabs to make your card perfect for any occasion. The only thing you’ll want to keep in mind as you create illustrations for to add to the pop up tabs is that they should be small enough, that when the card is closed, they do not extend past the edge of the card.
Watch me do assemble my pop up card template…
The few cuts and folds that are involved in making your own pop up card are really pretty simple. If you’re a visual learner watch the video below and I’ll walk you through everything you need to know to make your own pop up card. The video is only a couple of minutes long and I think it will answer any questions you have about using my pop up card template! You’ll be ready to use my template or build your own pop up card of any size or shape!
Free printable illustrations to personalize your pop up cards…
I’ve included the illustrations below as part of the pop up card template pack in my Free Resource Library. When you download the template these illustrations will also be part of that file. Color and cut any three of these illustrations out for an easy way to personalize your pop up card.
Don’t see just what you’re looking for? Make your own small drawings or letters using the provided illustrations as a guide for size!
Attaching the details….
Once your illustrations are colored and cut out it’s time to attach them to the tabs on your pop up cards. You’ll want to attach them using a dot of glue or a glue stick. Keep in mind that not the entire illustration will make contact with the pop up tab. Lots of the illustration will hang off the edges of the tab. If glue extends beyond that area just leave your card open until the glue dries so you don’t end up with the whole thing glued shut!
Adding more details….
Use a fine tip black marker to add any handwriting or a signature to your handmade pop up card.
Of course, the exterior of the card can be added to as well. Add an additional layer of white paper to give a clean surface to decorate on the front of the card or draw right on the colored surface!

Utilising https://emblem.finance EmblemVault application to make NFTs into Cryptocurrency vaults, you can also add 3D modelling into them as well.
EmblemVault can be currently used on both Ethereum & Matic Mainnets.
Go to https://emblem.finance and login to your Metamask or WalletConnect compatible account. Select which Mainnet you wish to use.
If this is your first time using the application you will need to purchase Circuits of Value (COVAL) cryptocurrency, it costs 300 COVAL to make a EmblemVault.
The easiest place with Metamask to purchase is on Uniswap.
EmblemVault’ s primary focus is a cryptocurrency trading platform, so with the “Private” option you can hide the Bitcoin, Ethereum/Matic addresses with a password of your choice, that will only be revealed if the password is inputted.
We will be using the “Public” option — click next.
Insert a name into the “Vault Name” box and information into the “Vault Description” box.
If you click on the “Include Encrypted Text In Vault” button it will reveal the Key/Value tabs, this can be used to ‘Sell’ information, such as CD-Keys, codes, discount tokens …etc.
This will only be revealed when the NFT is broken and not in further use for onward transmission.
You can choose to use any image file including GIFs upto 50Mb of data from the “Choose File” button.
However, to use the 3D option use the URL underneath.
We have currently used the following methods, from two online 3D modelling sites. https://sketchfab.com & https://www.shadertoy.com
I shall use this image to create this demonstration.
I am using Creative Common (CC) Licences for any existing NFTs I have created, if 3D modelers wish to copywrite and sell as unique NFTs that is achievable and can be protected on NFT marketplaces such as Opensea.io
The CC Licence is ‘CC Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike’ which means I will not be selling this piece for monetary gain, just using it to make this guide.
Select the “Embed link” and copy the information highlighted to the URL box.
and click “DO IT!”
A contract will then be created and Metamask will be opened for you to agree on the Network Gas fee.
Using your mouse you can now grab the image and turn it about or use the scroll button and view in and out.
Here is a YouTube video of the movement in use.
The same can be done on Shadertoy.com
Selecting “Sell (Opensea)” will open up the Opensea.io hyperlink — however you can also use any other NFT marketplace that supports Metamask.
We are currently working to input a graphic on the Opensea interface page.
You can create Emblemvaults on Matic — however there is no current marketplace, (Opensea are currently integrating theirs) unless you wish to transfer it inside an existing Ethereum Emblemvault NFT address and trade it on Opensea. You can verify the contents on Matic blockchain explorers.
As a graphical NFT you may wish to keep it as it is, but as a Crypto NFT you may wish to claim the contents or reveal the encrypted hidden code, please see the following guides.

How make a Pop Up Unicorn Card
I have TWO How to Videos for you to check out – the first shows you how to make all your “Unicorn Card PARTS”, the second shows you how to assemble them. Alternatively, read the WRITTEN INSTRUCTIONS BELOW each video!
Creating your Unciorn Parts
Remember that you will need to SKIP the part where you turn your bauble into “one full 3d sphere”. It is at THIS point that you need to move onto the 3D Card Assembly video!
Preparing the Paper Unicorn Head
Make use of our printable workheets on teacher’s pay teachers or follow the video/ step by step instructions.
- Sketch out your unicorn head or use our unicorn template. You will need 2 of these facing in opposite directions (draw one, get two pieces of paper, cut 2 at the same time.. flip one over)
- Add details in pen – e.g. for the ear, eyes and nose
- Now it is time to cute some rainbow paper strips – I cute red, orange, yellow, green and blue – I made them very narrow – 2mm wide and about 3-4 cm long (but you will trim them later).
- Add a little glue to your unicorn head… and start sticking down your main. Stick it as neatly to the edges as you can as sometimes the line is visible through the white paper.
- Add the a golden horn
- Add some extra main to the other side of the horn, so it matches both sides. Trim the mane if need be!
- Glue on your second head piece, so that your paper unicorn is pretty on both sides.
The Unicorn head is now finished.
Preparing the Paper Unicorn Tail
- A an extra red, orange, yellow, green and blue strip of paper – again approximately 2mm wide and 3-4 cm long and put those to one side
Preparing the Paper Unicorn Legs
- Cut strips of white paper 1cm wide and 2-3 cms long.
- Cut gold strips of paper – approximately 1cm wide 1.5cm long. Fold in half. You don’t have to use the gold, you can use pens to draw on some hooves too.
- Glue over the bottom of the white strips of paper to form a golden hoof. Trim to neaten.
- Put to one side.
Make your Paper Unicorn “Bauble” Body
- Cut 9-10 white circles (you can use our template for size)
- Fold the circles in half.
- Add glue to one half of the circle and lay a second circle on top.
- Continue until all half circles a stuck together.
We are now ready to assemble your card.
How to assemble your Pop Up Unicorn Card
Watch the 3d Unicorn Card Assembly video, or read the step by step instructions below!
Final Assembly of your Unicorn Pop Up Card
- Make sure you have NOT closed the paper bauble “in on itself”.
- Position the paper bauble in the centre of the card and glue the bottom half of it down (not the top, as you still want to slide “bits” in)
- Now you can add glue to your Unicorn head and slide it under the bauble on the right.
- Repeat the same ofr the tail. IF you have glued the whole bauble down already – don’t worry, just glue it on top of the last piece of paper, it will still look nice!
- Finally postion your unicorn’s legs and also glue them in place.
- If wanted, added a little cloud to your sky.
Your 3D Unicorn Card is now finished. Isn’t it adorable. If you want you can fill it with confetti stars for some extra special sparkle…
