How to persuade your parents to get a dog

That one-liner by Winston Pendelton is one way to convince mom and dad to get a dog. However, if you really want to add a canine companion to your family, there are several (better) strategies you can use when presenting your case to reluctant parents.

First, put yourself in their shoes. You say “dog” and they most likely hear “time, expense, disruption of schedules, a lot of extra work, and possible destruction of furniture and household goods.” You’ll want to address their concerns, while also highlighting the best parts of dog ownership. But, you can’t just talk the talk … you have to walk the walk. Here are some ways to show your folks that you’re ready for a dog.

1. Plan out a daily routine. Whether you get a new puppy or an adult dog, he will need food, walks, exercise, grooming, and training. By creating a list of daily tasks, you’re showing your parents that you understand how much time and effort goes into raising a happy, healthy, well-adjusted pet.

2. Show them how you plan to implement that routine. Will you get up earlier to feed and walk the dog? Are you willing to give up some after-school activities in order to come home and take care of him? Will you clean up after him? Are you willing to contribute to the expense? Far too often, families get a dog “for the kids,” but mom and dad end up doing all the work. Show them that you’re eager to take on a lot of the responsibility.

3. Prove to your parents that you’re responsible. Start by completing all of your household tasks, without being nagged to do so. Make your bed, pick up your room, take out the trash, and do the dishes. You might even get extra credit for taking on additional chores.

4. Do your research. Every breed is different, from size and appearance to temperament and exercise needs. A cute dog you saw in the park may not be the right breed for your family. For example, if your family is athletic and wants a dog to take on summer hikes, a breed in the Toy Group might not suit your needs. If you live in an apartment, a large breed could take up too much space. Explain your reasons for wanting a particular breed. If you need help deciding what kind of dog to get, check out AKC’s Breed Selector or take an AKC breed class on Outschool.

5. Figure out a way to help with the expenses that come with dog ownership. If you’re old enough, consider getting a part-time job or offer to do odd jobs around your neighborhood. You can even save up your birthday money. If you really want to show your parents that you’re ready to take care of a dog, offer to walk or petsit your neighbors’ canine companions.

6. Talk up the pros of owning a dog. Here are a few you can put on your list:

  • Owning a dog often equals more time spent as a family. Walks, games in the backyard, and training sessions are activities the whole clan can enjoy.
  • You’ll spend more time outdoors. Fresh air and physical activity are good for both you and your dog.
  • You might feel safer with a dog at home. You don’t have to get a guard dog, but with training, most breeds can learn who is welcome in your home and who is not. Plus, households with dogs are less likely to get burglarized.
  • Dog ownership teaches responsibility. You’ll learn to stick to a routine and follow through on promises. Plus, you’ll experience the joy of caring for another living being.

7. Draft a family contract. Specify which tasks you will personally take on. That could mean walking the dog twice a day or cleaning up any accidents he has in the house. This is the moment to have an open and honest conversation with your parents. Everyone can sign it to indicate how committed they are to making

8. Address your parents’ concerns. Perhaps your mom or dad is allergic to dogs. You could always present them with a list of hypoallergenic breeds. If they’re worried about your grades or extracurricular activities, don’t get defensive. Hear them out and respond honestly. Then, give them time to think about your proposal.

Owning a dog can be one of the greatest joys in life, but it comes with a lot of responsibility. If you can show your parents that you’re willing and able to take on that responsibility, you might just secure yourself a canine BFF.

How to persuade your parents to get a dog

First off, I just want to say that thank you. Thank you for giving me everything I ever needed, wanted, asked for, and desired. Thank you for giving me an amazing childhood and working so hard in order to let me have a wonderful life and pick the college of my choosing. Thank you for loving me unconditionally, supporting me, and always being there for me. You both truly are the greatest, but there has always been one thing I have wanted — something I have asked for many times but to no avail. I think now is a perfect time to bring up the matter because I am older and you guys need a new friend to keep you company on those long months when I am away. I would like to bring up the discussion of getting a dog once again. Maybe you will huff in frustration due to my constant nagging on the subject or smile at my determination or simply ignore this subject completely.

But I still would like to bring up this subject because I think a dog could benefit the whole family. I am going to take a big breath and discuss all of the benefits that a dog would bring to our loving family.

To begin, getting a dog would mean adding an extra friend to our family. Getting a dog would mean always having a friendly, furry, furiously-wagging tailed friend smile at you every time you walk in the house. The joy and excitement that our dog will show you every time you come home from a long day’s work will help you guys relax and be excited to spend the rest of the day with your furry friend.

The love our dog will have for you two will be infinite, and since I am away at college and you are unable to be surrounded by my sunshine every hour of the day, what better way to receive your daily dose of sun and happiness than through the purchasing of a dog as an exciting addition to our family?

Second, a dog is an amazing motivator for exercise. Mom, I know you love to stay healthy and exercise. You know I have done my research on dogs best suited as running partners. Instead of taking those long runs alone, you will have the opportunity to take an amazing companion along with you. If you get tired, no worries! Our dog will push you and motivate you until you reach your exercise goals!

Dad, you’ll be able to walk around the city and enjoy the sights and beautiful environment around you while being accompanied by an amazing friend. Our dog will allow you to enjoy nice long walks, and as an added bonus you get the luxury of playing cool activities such as frisbee and catch with our new furry family member. Our dog will keep you both outside and loving the city! You will never be bored because there are endless outdoor activities that can be done with our new furry friend.

Third, you will always have a friend around. I know you guys are both so busy and hardworking that it can be difficult to find time to have fun and go out to eat with friends or simply spend time with people you care about. If you had a rough week, are in need of comfort, or just want someone to listen to your thoughts and feelings, getting a dog is the way to go! Our dog will always greet you with a smile, be willing to listen to your thoughts, worries, and feelings as well as be your cuddle buddy in times of need. Instead of driving an hour to grab lunch with an old buddy you can simply head to the pantry, grab some food for our new furry family member, and spend your time with a friend who will always make time for you and love you no matter what.

Fourth, getting a dog will bring an extra dose of happiness to our already happy family. We are a very tight-knit bunch but I know my siblings and I agree that having that extra dose of sunshine will really bring a lot of extra joy and excitement into our household. Getting a dog would encourage us to exercise more, take responsibility for someone other than ourselves, and will help us learn to be more selfless and caring because we will be responsible for making sure our new furry friend is always safe, happy, and loved.

Finally, I just want to say I understand if after reading this you still don’t want one, but I want to thank you for taking the time to read it. I thought I could give this issue one last shot because I can assure you that all of us would take care of the dog and put our heart and soul into making sure our dog is loved. When I am home, I pinky promise to do all of the chores that some dog owners don’t like such as bathing them, clipping their nails, cleaning up all of their fur, and picking up their droppings on our joyful walks together. I will always greet our dog with a smile and make sure that our dog is always happy and loved every single moment of the day.

A dog will bring more excitement and life into all of us and I know getting a dog would be completely worth it. There is not one person I know who doesn’t love having a dog, and I am positive any dog would love to be a part of our family. For now that is all I really have to say, I hope that this article has helped opened your eyes just a teeny bit more on the amazing benefits of having a new furry family member. If it hasn’t, I am glad I gave it a shot, and hopefully this article has helped other children convince their parents to purchase a dog. And thank you again for being such wonderful parents; you both truly are the greatest.

How to Persuade Your Parents to Get a Dog

Phrases.org.uk says that dogs received the moniker of being “man’s best friend,” because of their loyalty and the affection they show to their owners. The phrase “man’s best friend,” first appeared in a newspaper in 1821.

They famously used the phrase in a court trial in Warrensburg, Missouri, USA, during 1870 to describe the value to the owner of a dog shot by a neighbour. The attorney in the case, who represented the dead dog’s owner, gave a moving speech. He was George Graham Vest, who later went on to become a Senator.

He said a dog stands by its owner, whether rich or poor, healthy or sick and that a dog’s love is as constant as the sun’s rising each day to traverse the heavens.

Who tried the legal case four times, and Who made even an appeal to the Supreme Court of Missouri to overturn the ruling in favour of the dog’s owner. The Supreme Court upheld the lower court’s ruling, and the owner of the dog shot by his neighbour won the case. A statute of the dog, named “Old Drum,” now stands in front of the Missouri courthouse in memory of the beloved animal.

Working dogs are beneficial to sheepherders. Dogs serve as guards for homes and businesses. Dogs work aside law enforcement officers. Other dogs serve a vital function as companion care animals. The ASPCA notes that more pet dogs in America (between 70 to 80 million) than people in Britain (about 64 million).

Europeans love their animals also. The Pet Food Manufacturer’s Association says, 46% of homes in the UK have pets, and there are over 9 million dogs in Great Britain. The European Pet Food Federation says that there are 70 million homes with pets in the rest of Europe and 25% are dogs.

Read more about the history of dogs and how dogs became man’s best friend in this treatise from the Oxford English Dictionary.

Hint for Kids: To convince parents to let you have a dog, explain how much you know about the history of dogs, why a dog makes such a good companion of great value that Who proved in a famous court case, and how a dog can help guard the household if that is a possibility.

Dogs Teach Children Responsibility

The main reason for a family to get a dog is for fun and companionship. The benefit is that caring for a beloved pet teaches responsibility in the very best way. Parents who find it challenging to get children to put down the video games and go outside soon realize a dog compels them to either take the dog out for a walk or go out into the backyard to play.

It is an incredibly wholesome experience for children to take care of an animal. This is true, especially when they are fully responsible for the daily attention the animal needs. Feeding a dog, walking a dog, and playing with a dog are all delightful ways to get children to put down their fixation with electronic devices for a moment and have a meaningful relationship with an animal.

Hint for Kids: This is how to get a dog. First, show that you can be responsible. Ways to show you are responsible include:

  • Help clean the table and wash the dishes after every meal.
  • Clean your room without being asked.
  • Do homework before watching television or playing video games.

If showing responsibility and making good clear reasons for having a dog is not enough, it is time to move to more diplomatic and persuasive efforts.

How to Convince Your Parents to Get a Dog, Tips applied to Mom and Dad.

Talk with your parents one at a time and plan to have a family meeting to discuss the idea of how to get a puppy or how to get a dog in detail. Find out if there are any specific objections to having a dog. Common objections include:

  • Having a dog creates new family expenses for dog food, a dog collar, a leash, flea treatments, veterinarian bills, medicine if the dog gets sick, vaccinations, and neuter or spay procedures to avoid unwanted puppies.
  • Taking care of a dog is lots of work.
  • Having a dog is a permanent, not a temporary thing.
  • Occasionally people have an allergic reaction from dogs.
  • People may prefer cats to dogs. A few people do not like any pets.

To address expenses, kids can do extra chores without receiving payment or help their neighbours pay and use the money to take care of the dog. When a person loves dogs, taking care of them is not work; it is a pleasure.

Dogs are always so happy to play, to receive food, to go for a walk; it is hard to feel bad when doing these things. The fact that a dog is a permanent friend is the very best part. The only sad thing is most people outlive their dogs.

Nevertheless, a dog’s death helps children understand the dying process, a precious life lesson. Some dog breeds are thought to be more hypoallergenic, and those breeds cause fewer allergic reactions in people. All types of pets are great for kids. Cats are great too.

Summary

When parents do not agree to have a dog, perhaps it is not the proper time. Don’t give up. Kids should continue to explore ways to convince their parents and learn more about dogs in the meantime. When it comes time to get a dog or puppy, seriously consider getting a rescue animal from an animal shelter instead of buying a dog or puppy.

The ASPCA reports that about 1.7 million abandoned dogs are euthanized (put to sleep) every year. Kids can tell their parents they want to save a dog’s life, which is very convincing.

How to persuade your parents to get a dog

Don’t we all want a furry friend in our lives? If you are fond of dogs and their cheerful nature, you may consider getting a pup. However, the major concern with the entire process is convincing your parents. You need to convince them that you are responsible enough to take care of your dog, and for that, you need to have a prior plan.

How To Convince Your Parents To Get A Dog? Convincing your parents is the first step in getting a dog. Giving them logical reasons that they will agree upon. Being responsible, involving in outdoor activities, saving money, discussing the benefits of having a dog in a family with your parents, and so on will help you with the convincing process.

10 amazing tips to convince your parents to get a dog

1. Discuss the benefits to the entire family.

Dogs are cheerful and will help lighten everyone’s mood.

Having a canine companion will strengthen family bonds as people will spend more time at home. Dogs can make even a small picnic or get-together interesting and fun. Their joyous nature rubs on everyone, and you will enjoy even the normal activities like an evening walk or a movie night at home more with a dog by your side.

2. Outdoor activities

Parents always complain about how the younger generation is stuck to their phones and don’t indulge in outdoor activities as much as they should. Dogs need their exercise, and having a dog around will force you to cut out some time from your video game playing session and to go out with your pup. This will help you get some air and is a very good reason to persuade your parents.

3. Be responsible.

If you want a wholehearted consent from your parents, you have to act responsibly. Prove that you can take care of yourself, which will help them further believe that you can take care of a pet as well. Start helping with the household chores, finish your homework before time, and you should also get a part-time job if possible. These activities will help build faith in your abilities and will also boost your self-confidence.

4. Saving money

The first argument for not getting a pet can be the funds required. Dogs are expensive, and some breeds may cost a lot of money. You will also require funds to maintain the dog and for medical checkups. Save some money before you try to convince your parents. This will help them see that you really want a pup and you are responsible enough to save for something that you want. You can save up the amount from your pocket money, or you can get a part-time job to finance the breed that you want

5. Mental benefits.

Having a dog at home is always comforting. Dogs are intuitive and can find ways to cheer up their human friends. Dogs can also serve as a therapy dog because of their amusing nature. If your parents stay busy with work and stay away from home most of the time, you can tell them how having a dog can provide company and lighten your mood. The caring nature of a dog is unparalleled to any other pet and has huge mental benefits.

6. Protective nature of dogs.

We all know that dogs are faithful and dutiful creatures. They protect their packs at all costs. They consider their humans as part of the pack and are ready to do anything for their security. With the right training, dogs can learn who is welcome and who is not. They can serve as a protector for the house and family when your parents are away on a work-related trip or vacation.

7. Consider adopting stray dogs

You can enlighten your parents about how stray dogs face abuse and loneliness. Adopting a dog is a humane act which your parents will certainly approve of. This will be an opportunity to be compassionate towards these little creatures by providing them a home where they are loved and appreciated. Also, adoption is an inexpensive option compared to buying a high breed dog.

8. Be patient

It doesn’t matter how effectively you have communicated to your parents the idea of getting a dog; they may not agree right away. You need to be patient. Do not ask them repeatedly as it will annoy them, and they may feel that you are not ready for a pet. Keep doing your chores responsibly, including your studies and bring the topic occasionally so that your parents will get used to the idea and will take your demand seriously.

9. A list of reliable veterinarian doctors.

Taking care of a dog includes taking care of its medical needs. This could be the tricky part as your parents may not have enough time to look after a dog and do research on reliable vets. Providing your parents with a list of reliable doctors will not only solve their concerns but will also help you feel responsible. They will have enough confidence in you that you can take care of a pet. You can search for veterinarians in your area, or you can get recommendations from your friends who already own a dog. You can also search the internet and find information regarding a veterinarian, including client reviews.

10. Be considerate to other member’s concern

The first step of convincing is being respectful of the views of other family members. These concerns can be medical issues or allergies that your parents or siblings suffer from. You can explain to your parents about the availability of hypoallergenic dog breeds. You will also need to assure your parents that the dog won’t cause any damage to the house, furniture, or other family members. Be patients and hear them out so that they feel their opinion is respected.

Getting a dog is one of the happiest decisions you will ever make, and the efforts required are worth it. These are some of the tips that can help convince your parents about getting you a dog who can be your companion for a lifetime.

My two siblings and I are on the case to persuade my parents to get us a dog! Throughout my experimenting, I have some strategies that really work to get a dog, besides just asking a lot, and showing them potential dogs 🙂

Send Articles

The first thing I did, when I started lobbying for a dog, was to email my parents every other day with links connected to articles proving dogs are helpful to families. Some of the ones I used are linked here:

Make sure that you are polite and not too pushy when sending these emails so that you do not make your parents mad which will lower your chances of getting a dog!

Make a Schedule

Making a schedule when asking parents for a dog is essential so your parents don’t get mad at you for asking too much. You may download the customizable schedule using the link above. I left Saturday off the schedule because it is important to give them a break!

Put up Post-it Notes

You can really put the post-it notes anywhere, but I decided to put them above my parents’ bed reminding them to talk about getting a dog. As they are lying in bed and look up they see sticky notes trying to get them to agree. Every time I asked them they said they would discuss it. But, I decided to give them a little nudge.

Show that you are Responsible

Instead of taking out the trash, or clearing the table (which will not show your parents you are responsible, because you are ‘expected to do that anyway’ ) what better way to show that you will take care of a dog, then to actually walk someone else’s dog! If you know that someone with a dog lives on your street, and ask if you can walk their dog. This shows that you are on top of stuff

Arty, the dog I walk to show I am responsible.

Put Up Cute Dog Pictures

Print out many cute dog pictures and put them around the house for them to notice constantly. Tape the pictures in places that your parents look at a lot like across from the toilet, next to the TV, at the bottom of the stairs, etc.
