How to recharge

When your car’s air conditioning (AC) begins to lose power and doesn’t blow cool air, it may be time for an AC recharge. Recharging your AC means adding more refrigerant to your AC system to allow the air to start blowing cold again.

Important to know: recharging your AC is a temporary fix to a likely bigger problem. If your system is indeed missing refrigerant, your air conditioning system has a leak and needs to be inspected and repaired with a certified mechanic. Refrigerant does not evaporate in an airtight system, so air must be leaking in.

  • Note: Some older vehicles cannot have their AC unit recharged. These vehicles generally fall before the year 1995 and use an R12 refrigerant no longer made. The only option is AC replacement.

Though an ac recharge can be completed at home, it is still considered a more professional repair, as it contains work with hazardous liquid and is best left for a certified mechanic.

Recharge your AC in 7 easy steps:

Because of the sensitivity of this procedure, we will explain how to use the AC recharge kits. They have shown to be the most effective and safest option in comparison to trying to repeat a mechanic’s role at home.

Materials Needed:

  • AC dispenser with trigger and low side gauge
  • Meat thermometer
  • Refrigerant (12-28 ounces, depending on vehicle requirement. This information is located on the underside of the hood).

Safety glasses and gloves

Tip: Always wear safety glasses when performing work under the hood. It is especially important to be careful to not get any refrigerant on your skin as it freezes quickly and is very painful. Please be sure to follow all instructions that are included with your AC recharge kit and read every canister’s warnings carefully.

Step 1: Turn on your AC. Start your car and turn your AC to Max or High.

Step 2: Determine if AC compressor is engaging. An AC compressor is a device driven by the accessory belt that converts the refrigerant from liquid to gas. The compressor has a clutch at the end of it that should be spinning with the accessory belt when the AC is on high. Look for these pulleys moving.

If the clutch on the compressor is indeed engaging, then it is likely that the system is low on refrigerant, especially if the air is still blowing slightly cold. You will still want to move ahead with testing the pressure before adding refrigerant.

If the clutch is not engaging the compressor, then the AC system is either very low on refrigerant, there is an electrical problem, or the compressor itself has failed. Adding more refrigerant after pressure testing will allow you to know which of these the cause is.

Step 3: Test the pressure. To test the pressure, turn the vehicle off and locate the low side pressure port. The low side pressure service port is generally located on the passenger side of the engine bay. It will have a black or grey cap on it with the letter “L”.

  • Tip: If you are having a hard time finding it, try locating the two aluminum pipes that are coming out of the firewall (the metal wall behind the engine) and trace the larger-diameter pipe until you find the service port.

Step 4: Attach the recharge hose from the kit. To attach the recharge hose, place the quick-connect fitting — found on the end of the recharge hose — over the port and push down firmly until you hear it click into place.

  • Be careful not to pull the trigger at this time as this will release refrigerant from the AC system into the atmosphere.

Step 5: Restart the vehicle and monitor the gauge. Restart the vehicle and make sure the air conditioner is on the highest settings. Begin to monitor the gauge by watching for the AC compressor to engage the clutch. Once the compressor is engaged, if the low side pressure is under 40 psi, it is verified that the AC system is undercharged. You want the reading to be as close to 40 psi as possible.

Step 6: Thread the refrigerant can onto the recharge hose. Threading the can onto the hose allows you to slowly top off the AC system with liquid refrigerant. Once the can is installed, hold the can upright and squeeze the trigger for 5 to 10 seconds to add the refrigerant to the system. After you release the trigger, check the pressure gauge to be sure you are not overcharging the system.

  • Proceed until you are as close to 40 psi as possible.

Step 7: Return to the inside of the car and check the temperature. Using a thermometer, insert it into one of the AC vents on the driver’s side, near the steering wheel, and note the temperature. A fully charged system will blow air as cold as 28 degrees. This can vary slightly depending on ambient temperature as well as whether the vehicle has been stationary.

  • If the pressure is over 40psi, that is considered “high” low side pressure. This can be caused by overcharging the system or if the compressor itself is malfunctioning. If the pressure is reading high, it is time to seek professional mechanic help, as repairs may be necessary.

You have successfully recharged your AC! Your AC should be running colder now and your drive should be much nicer.

  • Warning: It must be stressed that if your refrigerant was low to begin with, there is little doubt that there is a system leak. AC repairs are highly specialized and this sort of repair needs to be addressed by a professional for proper procedures and practice, as well as keeping the refrigerant from leaking into the atmosphere and polluting the air we breathe.

A Mechanic’s Tips about an AC recharge

  • Always leak test the AC system before a refill.
  • Always vacuum test the AC system before you refill the AC. Condense, or water in the AC system may damage it quickly.
  • Check the AC compressor clutch and the AC pressure sensors before you do any advanced work on your AC system. If the AC compressor clutch is not engaging, you might be able to remove some shims inside of it to make it functional for some more time.
  • The best way to find AC problems is to connect the AC machine – Empty the system, put vacuum for 20 minutes. Check for any leaks and then refill the system with leak detector fluid, oil, and refrigerant. Let it run for 20 minutes and check the function and look out for any leaks. If everything seems fine, you can give the car to the customer. If it is not fine, empty the system again and repair any leaks and continue the troubleshooting.
  • Pressure tests are a better way to test for leaks than vacuum tests. Vacuum tests can seal the small leaks.

What is a AC recharge?

All cars AC systems leak a little bit every year. After a while, you need to recharge the AC system. Before you do an AC recharge, you test for any leaks and test the system’s function.

How serious is low AC pressure?

The only thing you may notice when the AC pressure is low is that the AC is not working. However, some newer cars have a variable AC compressor, which can get seriously damaged if the AC system is empty. If you have an ac compressor with a clutch, you do not have to worry, though.

How often do you need to recharge the AC?

There is no specific schedule for when you should recharge your AC. Usually cars AC system have to be recharged every 6-8 years for natural reasons if you need a recharge before, there is probably a problem with a leak somewhere.

What are the symptoms of low AC pressure?

The only symptom you may notice is that you will not get any cooling effect inside your car. You might also hear the ac compressor go on and off on idle if you have an ac compressor with a clutch, though.

Having time off is an excellent opportunity to recharge your batteries and relax from the stressors of everyday life. It’s easier to perform productively and feel rejuvenated when you take a break from work.

But for some people, relaxing during their time off is difficult. They can’t seem to shake their workaholic mindsets or simply don’t know what to do with the extra time. Whether you run a company or work for one, it’s crucial to have a healthy work-life balance to feel fulfilled.

It’s important to use your time wisely so that you come back to work more productive and motivated than before. Everyone deserves to take time for themselves to do what they enjoy. You don’t have to vacation to a tropical island, either.

Here are four tips to help you recharge during your time off.

1. Reflect On Yourself

Every Entrepreneur Comes To This Fork In The Road—Here’s How To Decide Your Path

If you feel like you need time off work to recharge, then it’s important to understand what got you to this point. If it’s a recurring theme to feel burned out every week, then you need to take steps to change that. The first step is to reflect on how you feel.

Reflecting on your thoughts and emotions helps you better understand yourself and your current situations. When you can pinpoint the stressors in your life, it’s easier to map out how you’ve come to this point so you can prevent it from repeating.

Practicing self-reflection also helps you figure out what’s important to you. Perhaps you want to work on building successful relationships that last. If you’re stressed and feel anxious about your current situation, you don’t have much time to focus on connecting with others.

2. Step Away From Electronics

It’s easier said than done, but stepping away from your electronics can improve your mood and overall well-being. Spending excessive time scrolling through social media and staring at screens takes away from time you could spend doing things you enjoy.

Thanks to the novel coronavirus and FOMO, the fear of missing out, many people feel lonely. They can’t hang out, and if they do, they have to practice social distancing. With fewer options available for social interaction, it’s even more challenging to put your phone down.

A study from Berkeley University shows that unplugging from devices improves sleep, deepens social connections, increases productivity and allows for present-moment awareness. Throughout the day, notification after notification pops up on our phones, giving us less time to appreciate the current moment. Being off work is the perfect time to explore using your screens less and enjoying what’s in front of you.

3. Pick Up A Hobby

We all have things we’d like to try or spend more time on. Activities such as painting, reading, writing and cooking are common hobbies people enjoy to relax and unwind. Regardless of what it is, it’s vital to have hobbies to explore our passions and find happiness in the small things.

You can use your time off to pick up an old hobby or try a new one. It’s never too late to set goals and work toward something new. Doing so boosts your creativity and improves your mood. It feels good to indulge in what you enjoy, and vacation time is the perfect opportunity.

4. Move Your Muscles

Busy work schedules can leave less time for working out and moving your body. But no matter how difficult it is, it’s essential to make time for exercise and take care of your health.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, exercise has many benefits, including:

• Reducing anxiety and depression.

• Maintaining a healthy weight.

• Lowering the risk of certain cancers.

• Strengthening bones and muscles.

Overall, exercise makes you feel better, both physically and mentally. You don’t have to do an exhausting cardio workout, either. You can do yoga or meditation to stretch your muscles and practice mindfulness.

Your Turn

Taking the time to reset your mind and body is a game-changer for your physical and mental well-being. Humans aren’t machines and, therefore, can’t operate as such. We need breaks away from regular routines to feel rejuvenated and fulfilled. This ensures improved productivity and creativity at work and in other areas of our lives. How will you recharge during your time off?

Your central air conditioner works by performing a complex form of heat transfer with the assistance of a chemical refrigerant. When your refrigerant level runs low, the heat transfer does not take place and the unit, while remaining functional and blowing air, will not provide cold air. This is a sign that you should be recharging or refilling the air conditioner.

Research what kind of refrigerant your unit uses. There are different types and recharging with the wrong one could cause problems much worse than simply not having a charged AC unit. While it is possible to acquire coolant and recharge the unit yourself by purchasing a commercial Freon kit, the rest of the functioning elements of air conditioners can seem dangerous and intimidating to an inexperienced person. If you do not feel comfortable with a project of this magnitude, it’s a good idea to call an air conditioning expert.

DISCLAIMER: We recommend avoiding this type of project and using a professional since it can be hazardous if you’re inexperienced. Refrigerant is toxic, and ingesting it can damage your health. Even while performing the check and removal of the old refrigerant, wear protective gear such as a mask, goggles, and gloves. In some areas, it is illegal to use refrigerants or do this kind of work on air conditioning units without the proper license. Note that just because refrigerant is available for sale online or in a store, it still may be against the rules for you, a layperson, to be the one handling it once it’s purchased. Check your local laws before attempting this project.

Step 1 – Inspect the Unit

Using your air conditioner’s manual, locate the compressor of your unit. It will look like a metal cylinder and have two lines coming off it.

TIP: Before adding the coolant, use this opportunity to inspect the rest of the components and make sure they are clean and working. There are two reasons this is necessary: 1) it may be something other than the refrigerant that impacting the unit’s performance, and 2) if fresh refrigerant is added and the unit is powered on while another component isn’t functioning optimally, all kinds of general damage could occur far beyond a coolant or charging issue.

Step 2 – Plug the Service Valve

Locate the service valve inside your Freon kit. It will be the large connector valve found amongst the kit’s other contents. Plug the service valve into a compressor line (one of the lines you located next to the compressor earlier) in air conditioner unit. Follow the Freon kit instructions to attach the service valve appropriately.

Step 3 – Plug the Tap Valve

Your Freon kit also contains a small valve connector. That valve is called the tap valve. The tap valve must be plugged into the remaining compressor line to your AC’s compressor. You will find fittings on top of your air conditioner’s compressor. Follow the instructions in the Freon kit’s manual for the best results or if there is any confusion.

Step 4 – Add Freon

How to recharge

To add Freon to the lines, you need to attach the Freon container to the two valves that you have just installed. Follow the instructions set in your Freon kit to secure the container between the two valves. Basically, the air conditioner will force the Freon into the unit.

Step 5 – Charge Freon

Now that you’ve finished installing new refrigerant to your home AC unit, you need to let the Freon flow in to it. To do so, simply turn on the unit and turn it up to the highest setting. This will force Freon into your unit, effectively recharging your air conditioner in the process.

Once the unit is done taking in all of the Freon, turn off the air conditioning unit. Remove the Freon container and the two valves that you installed.

How to recharge

10’000 Hours | Getty Images

As an entrepreneur, you likely give dozens of people hours and energy, possibly at the expense of your well-being. This, however, is simply not sustainable long-term, and will likely lead to burnout. In this post- (sort of) pandemic “new normal,” it is more important than ever to maximize time for yourself in order to recharge and live life on a higher level.

Some key concepts I’ve learned that help make it easy:

1. Make this “You” time part of every day

This is the most important concept to embrace. Whatever your escape may be — even something as simple as following a gratitude practice wherein you write down a great moment that happened in your day before going to bed — engaging in it regularly helps get you into what’s called a “flow” state. This doesn’t have to take up every moment of free time, but it has to be part of a consistent schedule.

2. Make a to-do list and prioritize tasks

It’s hard to stay in “go” mode all day long, yet vital that you are dialed-in and focused on the pressing tasks at hand. Make a list of the things you need to do and prioritize them by choosing the top three that “must get done today.” By focusing on them, you will be able to move your business forward, achieve a sense of completion and create a space within which to indulge a little, or get away (mentally or physically). Once these top three are finished, you might also choose to move onto less urgent tasks.

3. Learn how to say “No” and set boundaries

Your time is valuable because it is constrained, so spend it with the right people. It doesn’t mean that you have to stop being friendly or helpful generally, but it does mean knowing when the task in front of you is more important than a sudden request. There’s an art to knowing when to take the responsibility of declining and putting yourself first, and part of it is setting boundaries with people who are, perhaps, taking up too much time talking or inquiring about extraneous or otherwise peripheral topics. You may want to consider finding someone else within the company who could answer these types of questions. The takeaway here is not giving up engagement, but learning how best to manage and leverage connections with people.
