Whether you’re short on time or don’t have a working oven, making a baked potato in the microwave can provide a great alternative. While you may sacrifice the crispy skin you get in the oven, you’ll also save 30 minutes or more.

“Although the microwave gets a bad rap in the cooking world, it actually works pretty well to cook potatoes,” says Devan Cameron, a professional chef who runs the food blog Braised & Glazed. “If I’m at home, I’ll sometimes cook potatoes in the microwave because it’s much faster than waiting for them to bake in the oven.”

A microwaved potato can generally offer the same texture and flavor as an oven-baked potato, says Cameron, but you do need to keep certain things in mind. Below, experts share their top tips for making baked potatoes in the microwave.

Quick tip: If crispy skin is a priority, try cooking baked potatoes in an air fryer. It’s not as quick as the microwave, but it’s still faster than baking them in the oven.

How long to microwave baked potatoes

Keep in mind that the cooking time for microwave-baked potatoes can depend on how powerful your microwave is, as well as how large your potatoes are and how many you’re making.

Chef Adrian Davila — the owner of Davila’s BBQ in Seguin, Texas — recommends five to six minutes per side for one potato, and seven to nine minutes per side for two potatoes. As a general rule, he advises adding four minutes (two minutes per side) to the cooking time per additional potato you put in the microwave.

The best way to tell if your potatoes are done, according to Cameron, is to slide a fork into the center — if it feels soft on the inside and there’s no resistance, they’re ready. If they don’t feel tender in the center, however, they probably need more time.

“The microwave can cook unevenly, so it’s important to check all areas of the potato for spots that may still be uncooked,” he says.

How to make baked potatoes in the microwave

Here are Cameron’s step-by-step instructions for making baked potatoes in the microwave.

  1. Wash the potatoes under running water. Dry them thoroughly with a towel.
  2. Poke holes into both sides of the potatoes with a fork. This helps steam escape and prevents them from bursting in the microwave.
  3. Cover with a damp towel. Place the potatoes on a microwave-safe plate and cover them with a damp paper towel or dish towel to keep them moist while they cook.
  4. Microwave the potatoes on high. Start with five minutes for one potato and add two minutes to the cook time for every additional potato you’re microwaving at once.
  5. Flip the potatoes. Use tongs or oven mitts. They’re hot!
  6. Microwave again. Set your microwave for the same amount of time as the first round of cooking.
  7. Pierce one of the potatoes with a fork to tell if it’s done. It should slide into the potato easily. If it doesn’t, place them back in the microwave at one-minute intervals until it passes the fork test.
  8. Slice the potatoes open and fluff the flesh with a fork. Add butter, salt, pepper, or any other preferred seasonings and condiments.

Quick tip: If you like crispy skin, Cameron recommends brushing the skins with olive oil and baking the potatoes in the oven for five minutes at 500 degrees Fahrenheit after they’re done microwaving. This method is still faster than baking them all the way through.

Insider’s takeaway

Making baked potatoes in the microwave can be a huge time-saver. The only real drawback is that you won’t get crispy skin — but fortunately, popping your potatoes into the oven for five minutes afterward can solve that problem.

Since cooking times can vary vastly depending on the microwave you’re using, how many potatoes you’re cooking, and how large the potatoes are, use the fork test to tell for sure if they’re done.

For safety reasons, always remember to use oven mitts or tongs when removing the potatoes from the microwave.

How to bake a potato in the microwave

Wash your potato

Wash your potato thoroughly, especially if you like to eat your baked potato with the skin. Pat dry to remove all the moisture as possible.

Pierce the potato with a fork, grease, and salt.

Using a fork, pierce your potato all over: this will cause the steam to evaporate during the heating process so that the potato will not explode in the microwave. Using a kitchen brush, grease your potato with oil and sprinkle salt all over.

Microwave your potato.

Place your potato on a safe microwavable plate. Depending on the size of your potato, start with 3-4 minutes. Using a tong flip the potato on the other side and microwave for another 3-4 minutes. Add more time if you need to ensure your potato is tender and fully cooked. Let it cool for about 2-3 minutes.

Using Toppings.

Use the topping of your choice, be creative, and make it fun. I use ground beef because it’s my favorite. Slice the potato down the middle or slice off the top. You can season with black pepper, top it with butter, bacon, sour cream, your favorite vegetables, add some cheese, and put it back in the microwave for a minute to get your cheese melted and crispy. Serve warm.

Note: I first published this post in 2014. Homeschool mom tip: a microwaved baked potato is a great option for a homeschool lunch, one the kids can even make themselves. Life skills like these are part of the reason we homeschool. Life hack 101!

Welcome back to “potato week” here at Simple Life and Home! Yesterday, I shared one of my favorite potato side-dish recipes: creamy potato casserole. Today, I’m sharing one of my favorite potato-cooking shortcuts: how to bake a potato in the microwave.

This tip has been revolutionary at my house. It all started when we invited friends over for dinner years ago. I had the chicken ready to put on the grill but had forgotten to place the potatoes in the oven to bake. Yikes! There was no way I could bake the potatoes in time to serve with the chicken.

That’s when my friend graciously shared this baked-potato shortcut, and I’ve been using it ever since.

Here’s how to bake a potato in the microwave:

1. Scrub the potato under running water.

2. Pierce the potato several times with the tines of a fork and wrap it in a wet paper towel.

3. Place the wrapped potato in the microwave and cook it on HIGH for five minutes. (The steam from the wet paper towel will keep the potato from drying out.)

4. Carefully remove the potato from the microwave with a potholder and give it a slight squeeze. If the potato squeezes easily, it’s done. If not, put it back in the microwave in one-minute increments, checking after each minute to see if it’s done cooking.

Easy peasy. Potato squeezy. 🙂

Here are a few more tips:

  • If you’re baking several potatoes at once, you’ll have to increase the baking time. I recommend starting with five minutes, then increasing by two-minute increments until they all test done.
  • If you are grilling, start the potatoes in the microwave. After five minutes of baking in the microwave, remove the damp paper towels and wrap the potatoes individually in aluminum foil. Place them on the top rack of the grill for another five to ten minutes of baking time.

These days, I always start baking potatoes in the microwave first, then finish the baking on the grill. It cuts the baking time in half, and I don’t have to have the grill on so long.

Lately, my kids have picked up on this baked potato tip. They often make themselves a baked potato snack in the afternoon, or they add toppings to a baked potato for a healthy lunch. So many possibilities!

Stay tuned tomorrow for a roasted potato recipe that’s sure to please!
