How to block someone from viewing a linkedin profile

LinkedIn is supposed to be the professional’s social network but some people can still act dumb or be annoying even there. Some companies just don’t know how to market to people and think the more they spam you the more likely you are to do business with them. Fortunately, it is possible to block someone on LinkedIn. Here’s how.

How to block someone from viewing a linkedin profile

I have had a very positive experience on LinkedIn. I have made business contacts, gotten a few freelance jobs and even met old school friends from years ago. I do know others who have not had quite the same experience though. People acting like jerks, marketing incessantly even though that isn’t supposed to happen and some quite inappropriate messages have been sent. Not what you want from a professional network!

Block someone on LinkedIn

Fortunately, it is simple to block someone on LinkedIn. Introduced back in 2014, the ability to block someone means you can finally get a bit of peace and quiet while on the network.

If you block someone:

  • You will not be able to access each other’s profile.
  • You will not be able to send messages to each other.
  • You will not be able to access content shared by the other.
  • You will no longer be connected.
  • All recommendations and endorsements from the other person will be removed.
  • All mentions of the other person will disappear and will no longer be presented.

Here’s how to block someone on LinkedIn.

  1. Go to the profile page of the individual you want to block.
  2. Select the three dot More option in their title box.
  3. Select Report/Block from the dropdown menu.
  4. Select Block NAME in the popup window and then Block again to confirm.

This will instigate a block and will immediately stop them from contacting you again.

If you block someone by mistake, you can unblock them using a similar process.

  1. Click the Me icon on your own profile page.
  2. Select Privacy & Settings and Privacy.
  3. Navigate to Blocking and select Change in the Blocking section.
  4. Select Unblock next to the person you want to allow back into your life.

Good reasons why you might want to block someone on LinkedIn

Aside from spammy or inappropriate messages, why would you need to block someone on such a well behaved social network like LinkedIn? I personally know of three reasons.

Stalker behavior – Even though a person might not be a stalker, if they act like one they need to be blocked. Life is too short and professional networks too valuable to waste time on such people.

Former employee, business partner or boss – If you didn’t part company on good terms there is no reason to show them how well or badly you’re doing. Some people hold grudges or take offense at the strangest things.

Exes – Even though LinkedIn is a professional network, it is prime territory for an ex to come looking for you. While it might not matter to you at all what they know about you, not all exes will have a benign interest in your wellbeing.

There are a few other neat tricks you can use in LinkedIn to create a great first impression.

Removing a connection

Sometimes it becomes necessary to remove a connection for one reason or another. Some people just don’t know when to stop or when enough spam is enough. Removing them as a connection should quieten things down a bit.

  1. Visit your Feed page on LinkedIn.
  2. Select the three dot menu icon to the right of the person you want to remove.
  3. Select Unfollow NAME and confirm as required.

This won’t block them but it will remove them as a connection and stop their spam appearing on your feed.

Manage connection requests

If you send and receive lots of connection requests on LinkedIn, you can easily manage them from the Manage invitations dashboard. This is a simple UI that lets you see who you have received connection requests from and who you have sent them to.

  1. Navigate to My Network using the top menu in your profile window.
  2. Select Manage all in the pending invitations box at the top of the network screen.
  3. Select either Received or Sent and select a request.

You can resend, delete or personalize the connection request by selecting the circle to the left of the profile or the envelope icon to the right.

LinkedIn have made it simple to block people, manage messages and generally take care of business on the social network. That makes it a great place to build your professional persona and reach out to anyone who could help your business or your career.

• Endorsements and recommendations from each other are removed

Want higher quality connections on LinkedIn?

Here’s the (unfortunate) truth: Once you have a LinkedIn profile picture that makes an excellent gut-level first impression, people read your profile and see your work in a much more positive light.

It’s what psychologists call the “halo effect,” and it puts you way ahead of the competition.

One of the easiest ways to make your LinkedIn profile better (and get high quality views, connections, and messages) is to test some pictures on Photofeeler. Then use the picture that makes the best first impression.

Although Linkedin is great for networking and keeping in touch with business contacts, sometimes you want to keep your activity private. If you want to keep some control over who sees what you’re up to, there is a simple way to change the settings for your activity feed on Linkedin.

Login to your Linkedin account on a mobile or desktop browser.

Click on your profile picture and select ‘settings and privacy’.

How to block someone from viewing a linkedin profile

You will be on the main settings screen which has 4 tabs across the top. Select the ‘privacy’ tab.

You will see an option for ‘How Others See Your Linkedin Activity’. Under this subheading you’ll see various options such as:

  • Manage Active Mode: Choosing who can see if you’re online or stay hidden.
  • Sharing Profile Edits: Letting people know that you’ve edited an aspect of your Linkedin.
  • Notifying Connections When You’re In the News and Mentions by Others: Both of which share a post if your name is mentioned in a feed.

You can change the settings for each of these to keep your activity private. Once you’re finished updating your settings, click close and the changes will be saved.

If you wish to use a more private network and powerful contacts app, try out Covve (available in App Store and Google Play store).

LinkedIn is a tremendous tool for every working person, student, job-seeker and entrepreneur. It’s a free billboard, a massive research database, a place to learn about a vast range of topics and a networking forum like nothing else on earth.

However, not everybody you will encounter on LinkedIn is the kind of person you want to get to know better.

LinkedIn has spammers and scammers just like any networking platform does. You may find that you need to cut off communications with a LinkedIn user, or cut your connection with them — or even block them.

When you block a LinkedIn user, they can’t see your profile and you can’t see theirs. You can’t message them, and they can’t message you. Sometimes blocking an obnoxious LinkedIn user is the best way to go!

Here are ten good reasons to block someone on LinkedIn:

1. They spam your LinkedIn inbox with marketing messages.

2. They use LinkedIn as a dating site.

3. They reach out to your contacts without your knowledge or permission, representing themselves as a close friend of yours.

4. They use rude or inappropriate language.

5. Their LinkedIn profile is fake. The profile photo, name, job title and summary paragraph don’t correspond to one another. You can Google Search a LinkedIn user’s profile photo by right-clicking on it. It may be a photo swiped from an advertisement, or the portrait of someone famous the fake LinkedIn user is pretending to be.

6. They add you to their newsletter subscriber list and spam you to death.

7. They try to sign you up as an affiliate partner of their website — although you have no interest in the topic and have never suggested that you do.

8. They ask you to invest in their dubious project.

9. They want you to endorse them as an expert in some topic or other, although they know you have no knowledge of their work.

10. They creep you out, plain and simple.

If you know a LinkedIn user in the real world and they commit one of these offenses, you can talk to them about it. If you don’t know them and they take liberties with your association, that’s a bad sign. Some folks don’t know how to use LinkedIn, and others don’t care. Some LinkedIn users are not even real people.

Here’s how to block someone who contacts you through your LinkedIn inbox:

1. Click on the message in your LinkedIn inbox.

2. Click on the line of three horizontal dots to the right of the sender’s name, above the message.

3. Choose Report This Conversation to report the inappropriate/spammy/unwelcome message to LinkedIn.

4. Click on the link to Block the LinkedIn user, also.

It pays to be careful when adding new first-degree LinkedIn connections. Just because you meet someone at a networking event and they shove their business card in your hand doesn’t mean you and they are meant to be fast friends.

In networking as in every other part of life, setting boundaries is a critical skill. When somebody is not your cup of tea in the networking department, don’t hesitate to cut the cord!

How to block someone from viewing a linkedin profile

LinkedIn can be a great place to connect with professional contacts, both known and unknown, and thereby expand your network.

However, when you accept invitations from people you don’t know or don’t want to hear from, things can get uncomfortable — fast. That’s when blocking becomes a good option.

On LinkedIn, blocking a person means that you will no longer be connected (if you are), and you won’t be able to message each other, or view each other’s profiles or updates. You can block up to 1,000 people on the platform.

In most cases, the other person won’t get a notification about being blocked. The only exception is if you’re currently sharing or have previously shared a LinkedIn Recruiter account with this person. So you probably don’t have to worry about backlash or hurt feelings when you block someone on the site.

How to block someone from viewing a linkedin profile

It may seem odd to want to control privacy on a social network like LinkedIn, especially when your goal is to be known and promote your career or home business. However, there may be situations when you want to limit the information shared particularly outside the network.

One positive aspect of social media is that your information can be found through Google searches. But maybe you don't want that. Or maybe you only want people you're connected with on LinkedIn to see your full profile, while keeping it hidden from others.

LinkedIn makes controlling and protecting your privacy relatively simple when compared to other social networking sites like Facebook. While those you connect with will be able to see your complete LinkedIn profile, you have considerable control over what portions of your profile are displayed to the public (people outside the network or through search engines).

Why Limit Access to Your Profile?

It seems counter-intuitive to limit who can see your profile if your goal is to expand your (freelance) career or home business. However, there may be reasons to hide your profile or limit what people can see including:

  • You're moonlighting your home business and you don't want your boss to know.
  • You want to avoid a former boss from finding you and posting a bad reference.
  • Your goal in using LinkedIn is more for support and resources, not for business building and marketing.

You can control what people can and cannot see, or be alerted to on your Linkedin profile.

How to Hide Your LinkedIn Public Profile

If you don't want your profile to appear in Google or other search engines, and don't want your profile visible to non-LinkedIn members, you can completely hide your profile. Here's how:

According to LinkedIn, if your profile has been visible, it might take a few weeks for it drop out of search engines.

How to Control What Parts of Your LinkedIn Profile Are Visible to the Public

If you want your profile to be found in search engines and by non-LinkedIn users, but want to limit what they have access to viewing, you can do that through your profile as well. Here's how:

  1. Login to LinkedIn
  2. Click on "Me" in the top right hand corner to see the drop-down menu. Then click on "Settings & Privacy."
  3. Go back to the area marked "Your profile's public visibility."
  4. You will see a series of categories (including your headline, websites, posts, summary, current and past experience, and education) that you can make public or private. If the item is visible, it will be marked "Show" and the button will be blue. To turn it off, click on the button to hide it. The button will turn gray.
  5. To see what your profile now looks like to the public, click "View My Public Profile" as others see it link.

You can also customize who sees your profile photo—your connections, your network, all LinkedIn members or the public through search engines.

Remember, the controls offered here are designed to limit access to people who are not a part of the LinkedIn community. Your connections and other LinkedIn members will be privy to information you provide.
