We all know how important it is to keep our bodies fit by keeping active and maintaining a regular exercise routine. But, did you know that you can exercise your eyes as well? Eye exercises are designed to strengthen your eye muscles, improve focusing, eye movements, and stimulate the vision center of your brain. While there is no scientific proof that eye exercises will improve your eyesight, they may help to counteract existing eye problems you may have and maintain your current eyesight level. Exercises to strengthen weak eye muscles will improve your eyes’ muscle tone while also increasing blood circulation to your eyes, according to the Chinese Holistic Health Exercises website. Include eye exercises as part of your everyday exercise program to help improve your eyes’ health and minimize eye strain. These exercises are not miracle cures, but they may be able to help your eyes work more efficiently.

Eye Circles

Eye circles will help tone and stretch your eyes’ muscles. Either stand, sit or lie down for this exercise, and keep your eyes open. Slowly move your eyes in a clockwise direction. Do this 20 times. Make as wide a circle as you are comfortable with. Relax for 10 seconds. Repeat this exercise in a counterclockwise direction. Do this exercise three times daily. If having your eyes open for this exercise is too discomforting, close your eyes. Help your body wake up from sleeping by doing this exercise as soon as you awake.

Moving Pen Focus

Focus exercises can help strengthen your weak eye muscles. Sit upright in a firm chair. Hold onto a pen with your right hand, and straighten your right arm in front of your body. Hold the pen upright. Breathe regularly as you focus your eyes on the pen’s tip. Focus for 10 seconds. Slowly bring the pen towards your nose by bending your arm. Keep looking at the pen’s tip. Hold this position for 5 seconds. Slowly extend your arm again, all the time focusing your eyes on the pen’s tip. Hold the position for 5 seconds. Do not blink your eyes. Relax for 10 seconds. Repeat three times.

Immobile Face Focus

Sit upright in a firm chair. Lower your eyes and gaze at the tip of your nose. Breathe as you regularly would. Hold this position for 15 seconds. Do not blink. Slowly return your eyes to the original position. Close your eyes. Relax for 20 seconds. Open your eyes and look up between your eyebrows. Focus your eyes on this point for 20 seconds. Return your eyes to the original position. Quickly blink your eyes 10 times. Close your eyes. Relax for 20 seconds. Repeat this exercise three times throughout the day.

Eye Contractions

Contractions will strengthen and stretch your weak eye muscles. Sit upright in a firm chair. Place your palms on your lap, palms facing upward. Place your feet firmly on the floor. Tightly contract your eye muscles by closing and squeezing your eyes together. Hold this tension for 4 seconds. Open your eyes. Quickly blink your eyes 15 times. Relax for 5 seconds. Repeat this exercise five times throughout the day.

Vertical Maneuvers

Strengthen your eye muscles by doing vertical maneuvers. Sit upright in a firm chair and look up at the ceiling. Hold this gaze for 5 seconds. Return your eyes to the straight-ahead position. Relax for 6 seconds. Move your eyes to look down at the floor. Hold this position for 5 seconds. Return your eyes to the original position. Blink quickly 10 times. Relax your eyes for 20 seconds. Repeat this exercise four times.

Wouldn’t it be wonderful to be able to afford all of that fancy equipment used in the gyms? Well, as nice as it sounds, it just isn’t an option for most people. And since exercise is so important, you need to find exercises that are effective and don’t require any equipment at all.

Now you have no more excuses! Here are 10 great exercises that you can do at home, without the need for any equipment:

    Walking – If the weather is nice, it’s wonderful to get outside and enjoy the scenery around you while you exercise. However, if the weather has other ideas, you can just as easily get an effective walking workout at home. If you have a flight of stairs, go up and down them a few times. (You could even grab a load of laundry as you’re going that way anyway!) This will help to tone up your legs, while getting some low impact aerobic exercise as well. If you don’t have any stairs available, just walk around the house a few times – it may not be very exciting, but it will do the job!

  • Jumping Jacks – These are always fun, as they bring back memories of being a kid! Who hasn’t done jumping jacks for fun as a child? Well, surprise – they are also great cardio exercises, and good for warming up, too.
  • Pushups – These are probably not the most favorite exercise of many people, but while they can be hard to do, you can find easier ways to do them. You don’t need to pretend you’re “Rocky”, and do them with one hand; just do what works for you. Do them on your knees, instead of keeping your legs straight. Or, do them standing up against a wall. You will be building up arm strength and working out muscles in your chest area.
  • Leg Lifts – These are great for building up strength and muscles in your legs. If you find it hard to do the exercises with your legs straight, try bending them slightly.

    Crunches – The best exercise for building up and strengthening abdominal muscles. When you’re just getting started, don’t worry about getting your head all the way up. So long as you’re going up until you feel the stretching of the muscles, you will see some benefit.

  • Jogging In Place – Jogging is a great exercise for your heart. You can jog in place at home while watching TV or listening to music. The only equipment you will require is a good pair of shoes, to eliminate any stress to your legs.
  • Squats – These are wonderful exercises for your legs and buttocks. You can even just try these by sitting and standing up again from a regular chair, if you’re finding them to be too difficult. As long as you’re able to do a few repetitions, you will be providing some benefit to your body.
  • Light Weight Lifting – No, you don’t need to go out and buy expensive weights for this! Just use whatever you can find in your house. Start out with something lighter, such as a can of peas, and work yourself up to heavier items. You can use milk jugs, laundry detergent bottles or even water jugs.
  • Dancing – Dancing is a wonderful exercise, which is great for your heart. Not only that, but it can lift your spirits as well, and give your overall feeling a boost.
  • Step Exercises – Using the steps in your home, you can do repetitions which will tone your leg muscles. (Just remember to be careful!)
  • Getting some exercise is important, but you don’t need to go out and join a gym, paying a large amount in membership fees each month. You don’t even need the expensive equipment in order to give your body an effective workout. Use what you have in your house, and work out in the comfort of your home. You will be more likely to keep up with the exercises when you’re comfortable, so just get up and start exercising!

    1. Close your eyes
    2. Place a couple of fingers over each eyelid
    3. Press lightly for 2 seconds then release (Make sue you don’t press too hard!)
    4. Repeat 5 to 10 times
    5. Allow your eyes to re-adjust to the light once repetitions are finished

    1. Roll your eyes slowly to the left in a circle
    2. Repeat 5 to 10 times

    7. Repeat this exercise 10 times

    4. After it reaches your nose, slowly move it back to arm’s length

    3. Facing the objects you’ve chosen, put your thumb in front of your face, at arm’s length and focus on that
    4. Put your thumb down and look at the object that is 10 feet away from you
    5. Now switch to the object that is 25 to 30 feet away
    6. Work backwards from there and look at the object 10 feet away
    7. Put your thumb back in front of your face and focus on it at arm’s length
    8. Repeat this process 5 to 10 times

    The Basics of Eye Exercises

    If you want to know if eye exercises will make you never need glasses or contacts ever again, we’re sad to inform you the answer is no. Exercise, of any kind for that matter, is not the end-all, be-all to any condition or disease.

    When it comes down to it, certain eye exercises can make your eyes feel better, but they won’t necessarily cure anything. If you sit at a desk all day and look at a computer screen for multiple hours, soft movements of the eye can make them feel more lubricated and comfortable in the socket.

    There are of course companies that will tell you otherwise, give you so-called miracle ways to move your eyes around and fix nearsightedness, astigmatism and a list of other eye conditions.

    What Do Eye Exercises Do?

    Changing Focus: This exercise should be done in a seated position and will work on your eyes’ ability to focus.

    • Take your finger and hold it directly in front of you, a few inches away.
    • Focus on your finger, then slowly move it away from your face.
    • Look away at the farthest point, then look back at your finger and focus on it again.
    • Move your finger slowly back to you while focusing.

    Figure Eight: This exercise should also be done in a seated position and will allow you to work on the movement abilities of your eye muscle.

    • Pick a point on the wall or floor in front of you.
    • Trace an imaginary figure eight around the object for 30 seconds.
    • Rest.
    • Trace an imaginary figure eight around the object in the opposite direction.

    There are many other ways you can exercise your eyes, but those exercises should be given to you by an eye care specialist.

    What exactly is glaucoma?

    Glaucoma is a condition in which the eye’s intraocular pressure (IOP) is too high. This means that your eye has too much aqueous humor in it, either because it produced too much, or because it’s not draining properly. Other symptoms are optic nerve damage and vision loss. Glaucoma is a silent disease that robs the patient of their peripheral vision. Early detection is very important.

    Regular eye exams are the only way to catch “silent” diseases such as diabetes, glaucoma, and other conditions in their early stages when they’re more easily managed or treated. Many conditions can be discovered in a carefully planned eye exam. Those who consider mass-produced, over-the-counter reading glasses are truly doing themselves a disservice, both financially and medically. One-size-fits-all reading glasses not only do not work well for most people who have a different prescription in each eye, and/or astigmatism, or whose lens and frame parameters are not measured correctly, they bypass the opportunity to have their eyes checked for early detection of many manageable diseases or conditions. For those insisting on selecting glasses not measured specifically for their eyes, headache and eye fatigue are common symptoms.
