The act of hotwiring is to drive the car without the need to unlock it by bypassing the ignition. The majority of older vehicles manufactured before the mid-1990s are able to do this. Newer models hide all the wiring units, unlike older models.

Step 2: Connect Your Jump Cable
The positive battery terminal should be connected to one of the positive connections of the coil using a jump cable. It can also be connected to the red wire leading to the coil. The dashboard will be powered, and the engine will be started immediately.
If you are using a Ford car, the starter solenoid is located on the right side near the battery. GM cars have it under the steering wheel, somewhere on the starter.
Step 3: Unlock the Steering Wheel
Push the wheel and the column together with a flat screwdriver. You will need to push hard if you want it to work so you can push out the pin. You will see the solenoid underneath once the lock pins break or a warning is triggered.
Step 4: Connect the Battery Positive Terminal to The Solenoid
A small wire is located on top of the solenoid, and the battery cable is located below it. With an insulated screwdriver, disconnect the ignition switch wire from the solenoid.
Install the positive battery terminal on the ignition switch’s connecting point. The solenoid can be activated by 12 volts flowing from the battery through this connection. If everything is done correctly, the engine will make a starting sound and come to life.
Method 2: Tune Up the Steering Wheel Wire
Step 1: Remove the Plastic Covers from The Steering Column
Here’s another way to hotwire a car to achieve the desired result. Unscrew the steering column using a screwdriver. To access the panel, remove the cover.
If your car is an older model, you may want to break the lock pins. An ordinary screwdriver is put into the keyhole and hammered into place. By hand, perhaps, unless the car model is built in such a way as to make it easier.
Step 2: Identify the Right Wire Bundle
With the plastic cover removed, you will be able to see bundles of cables. As long as you can recognize the right wire roll, this process shouldn’t be intimidating. The wiring harness connector is usually located in one of three bundles.
Connectors of the wiring harness connect the ignition, the starter, and the battery. It connects to the steering column, which is known as the starting point. If you are unfamiliar with the wiring in the car’s panel, read the car manual carefully.
Disconnect the battery, ignition, and starter wires. There is one of these for powering the ignition switch, and the others are for powering the starter and ignition wires. If you read the user’s manual, you’ll be able to identify the wires correctly.
A brown ignition can be found in some cases, a yellow starter wire, and a red battery. You want to avoid making costly mistakes. Consult the manual whenever possible. When you move wires, be careful not to get electrocuted.

Step 1: Drill the Hole Right Through the Keyhole

A nationwide class action lawsuit, Draeger v. Toyota Motor Sales, was filed against multiple vehicle manufacturers, including Honda, Nissan, Toyota, Volkswagen, and others on August 26, 2015. Second , you must locate the wires connecting to the ignition and cut all of them.

Step 6: Start the car
The same action is taken on the starter wires. Cut the starter wires from the cylinder and strips the ends. However, you are not going to connect the starter wires by twisting them together. Simply touch the starter wires together until the car starts. Separate them and tape the ends to make sure you are not shocked while driving.
Notes: Be very careful in this step. You don’t want to touch the exposed ends because they have a powerful live current and it will definitely shock you.If your car has only one starter wire, touch it to the stripped ends of the power wires to start the car
Step 7: Handle the additional security
In some cases, the steering wheel lock’s bolt can be open by simply wedging the screwdriver into the space between the steering column and the steering wheel. However, modern cars now have much more complicated wheel locks and electronic key system. They make it seemingly impossible to be hotwired without using tools and in-depth understanding about the car’s ignition.
Step 8: Stop the car
You can turn the vehicle off by simply pulling the power wires away from each other.

If you have watched movies about car theft, you have seen thieves break into a car and start it without a key through a set of wires.
While we do not advocate car theft, the ability to hot-wire your car will prove useful if you lose your car keys.
Newer cars use an immobilizer, which means you need the chip in the key near the ignition to start your car. So in newer cars, hot wiring will not work. Always check to see if your car is equipped with an immobilizer before trying to hotwire it.
There are still ways to bypass the immobilizer, but you need a lot more knowledge to do that kind of thing.
How to Hotwire a Car
Total Time: 5 minutes
1. Remove the plastic cover around the steering column
First, you need to remove the plastic cover around the steering column to reach the ignition switch. Use a screwdriver to remove the screws under the steering wheel. Here you should find the wiring harness connection for the ignition switch.
2. Locate the ignition switch plug
Check the ignition switch’s backside, and you are going to find a connector going the ignition switch. You can either remove the connector to short the wires or cut the wires to short them.
3. Figure out the ignition switch wirings
This is the most important part of making a successful hotwiring. You have to find out which connector is doing what. You can find the wiring diagram marked on the ignition lock on some cars, but most often, you have to check a wiring diagram to know which wire s going where. You need to figure out the battery+, ignition, and starter motor wires. The battery cables are normally red, while the starter is yellow, and the ignition cables are brown. You should always confirm this with the owner’s manual, though.
Remember that if you don’t find the correct wiring diagram and put the wrong wires together, you can burn expensive parts like engine control units and even put your car on fire.

4. Cut & Strip the battery, starter, and ignition wires
Once you have located the starter, ignition, and battery+ wires, it is time to strip them – if you don’t choose to short them in the connector instead.
5. Twist the ignition + battery cable
Begin with twisting together the ignition and the battery+ cable. This should make a slight spark when connecting them, but you have for sure found the wrong wires if it is terrible.
6. Check if the ignition is turned on
Once the ignition and battery+ wires are connected, you should hear the ignition in your car turned on, and you should in most cars also hear the fuel pump starting. If nothing happens, you probably found the wrong battery+ or ignition cable.
7. Hold the starter + battery cable together
After you are sure that the ignition is on, it is time to make the engine turn around to start. To do this, hold together the starter motor cable and the battery+ source for a couple of seconds until the car starts. When the car starts, you need to remove these two cables from each other, but let the battery+ and ignition cable be twisted together.
8. Break the steering lock
The last step is to break the steering lock if your car is equipped with one. This can be really tough in some cars, and you really need some muscles for this.
However, after you broke the steering wheel lock, you should have a functional car.
To shut off the car – remove the ignition and battery+ wires from each other, and the car should die imminently.

This method should only be used in emergency situations.
The other method to gain access to your car is to drill the lock pins. The purpose of this method of starting the car is to turn on the ignition with a screwdriver instead of a key. Place the drill bit on the keyhole until it is 60 percent covered. Orient yourself on the length of the key and drill into the keyhole until small metal pits come out. Each keyhole has two parts of the spring.
Note that this method will destroy your keyhole. Remove the drill and use a screwdriver to turn on the ignition. Now that all the pins are broken, you don’t need to press the screwdriver so hard. The engine will come to life. Be aware that once you have broken the keyhole, anyone can steal your car.
Before anything else, let’s be clear: we don’t encourage or condone the hotwiring of a car for illegal purposes. The purpose of this guide is to show you how to start a car in an emergency or survival situation, in case you have no other means to escape a catastrophe or a pursuer. At the same time, this enables you to better protect your car against theft, if it is the type of model that can be hotwired. First, a couple of caveats:
X Not all cars can be hot-wired
Hotwiring only works on vehicles made before 2000. Models made after 1999 are way more complicated and take too much time for a quick escape. They also require tools only a professional car thief would have.
You can hotwire older cars, like this beautiful classic Mercedes-Benz 560 SEC from 1990.
X Practice on a junked car, not your daily driver
For testing purposes never practice on your own car. Hotwiring can do serious damage to a car, since you may have to break certain components like the steering wheel lock and mess around with the wiring. Hotwiring is a one-time deal and might mess up the starter or electrical system. Remember that “practicing” hotwiring also looks very suspicious. For these reasons we highly recommend practicing on a car that’s destined for, or already at, the junkyard.
To pull this off, you’ll have to bring the right tools. Don’t try hotwiring without them, or you risk electrocuting yourself or causing an electrical fire. You’ll need:
- Wire cutters
- Wire strippers
- A hammer
- Insulated gloves
- One flathead and one Phillips screwdriver
- Electrical tape
A pair of pliers is one of the tools you’ll need to hotwire a car. Use tools that can perform multiple functions, like the one shown, to keep your kit small and low-profile.
There are at least two ways of hotwiring:
- Insert the flathead screwdriver into the ignition as you would the key.
- Use the hammer to drive the screwdriver into the ignition, turning the screwdriver clockwise as you force it in.
- Should you encounter resistance, use the pliers to help turn the screwdriver. In some cases, this is enough to start the car.
In the “right” circumstances, mere possession of a screwdriver (deemed a “burglar’s tool” because of your intent to start a car that’s not your own) can be a felony. Be 100% sure you are hotwiring for valid reasons.
This is a bit more complicated and invasive. It also requires insulated gloves since you will be dealing with live wires. Follow these steps:
- Use the flathead screwdriver to remove the panel that covers the steering wheel column. Behind the panel you’ll see several wires; don’t be intimidated.
- If there are two brown wires:
Cut both wires and strip the ends. Touch the two brown wires together to start the car; once the car is started, don’t let the two brown wires touch again as these are live wires. Snip off the stripped wires and separately wrap both ends with electrical tape to keep yourself from getting electrocuted or accidentally causing a fire.
- If there is only one brown wire:
Look for two red wires. With your insulated gloves on, cut the red wires, stripping about an inch from the ends. Twist the ends of both wires together Then strip the brown wire and connect it to the two red wires to start the car. Once the car is started, snip off the stripped end and wrap the end of the brown wire with electrical tape.
Some final words
Again: the practice of hotwiring a car is something for emergency use only. Mere possession of the tools you’ll use to hotwire a car can constitute a felony, so use this guide judiciously.
That said, knowing how to hotwire a vehicle can literally be your ticket out of harm’s way. And for defensive purposes, it also gives you a better understanding of how cars can be “procured” without keys, so you can better protect your wheels.
Obviously, you won’t have the keys and may not have the time to pick the door lock of your target ride. To get into the car, you’ll have to break a window. Throwing a rock or brick will attract unwanted attention. You can break the window quietly and quickly with some duct tape and a sturdy tool like a knife, multi-tool or tactical pen with a hardened strike face.
First, use the duct tape to mark a huge X on the window. This will help deaden the sound and minimize shattered glass. Next, sharply strike the window’s lower corners where it’s weakest. Don’t strike at the center of the duct tape “X”; the tool may just bounce off the surface if you don’t hit the glass hard enough.

Hotwiring will probably work only on those cars that have been manufactured in the mid-’90s or before.
Hotwiring is a process of starting a car engine without using a key. Ordinarily, when the key is turned, it completes the circuit between the battery, ignition/electrical system, and the starter motor, resulting in the engine turning on. Hotwiring involves directly completing this circuit without the lock-key mechanism getting involved.
Before You Begin
- This process involves significant risk of electrical shock, so care needs to be taken.
- Hotwiring may cause damage to the wiring and/or the steering lock system, and should be carried out only in case of an emergency.
- Use this last resort on your own car only.
- Make sure that the car is in neutral, with the hand brake applied.
Preferred Method – Hotwiring the Wires Around the Keyhole
- Car ownership proof
- Wire clipper
- Electrical tape
- Protective gloves (recommended)
■ First, insert a screwdriver into the ignition tumbler (the place you insert your key) and turn it. If this works, your car will start right away, and won’t need hotwiring.
■ If the above step doesn’t work, you will have to hotwire your car. Look at the steering column. It will have access panels near it.
■ Remove the panels of the steering column. You will encounter several bundles of wires.
There will most likely be three different bundles of wires:
- One bundle will supply the car lights, cruiser control, etc., with electricity.
- Another bundle will supply the wipers, seat warmers, etc., with electric current.
- The third bundle leads to the car battery, ignition, and electrical systems, that go up to the steering column.
In the bundles, there will be wires leading to the battery, wires for the ignition/electrical system, and wires for the starter motor. There is no fixed color coding for wires of all cars. You may have to check your car manual to identify the wires.
■ Identify and separate the wire that leads to the battery and the one leading to the ignition/electrical system.
■ Remove a little insulation from the ends of both wires using a wire clipper. Then twist the bare ends together (preferably tape them). This should turn on electric supply to the radio, lights, and ignition. The engine is now ready to fire.
■ Locate the wire for the starter motor (mostly brown-colored). Cut off some insulation at the end.
■ Simply touch the bare end of the above wire to the bare ends of the joint red wires. The engine will turn on. Rev the engine to keep it running.
You have got the engine running, but the steering wheel may still be locked, keeping you from driving away. To disable the lock:
- Try to remove the shaft from the back of the steering column. Find a disc with holes that the lock fits into. Using a screwdriver, remove this disc.
- Try to remove the keyhole with a screwdriver. A spring will come loose, disabling the steering lock. This method works only on a few car models.
- Try to force-turn the steering wheel to the extreme until you heard the lock break. This method is based on sheer effort and may yield results.
When driving, keep the starter wire covered with duct tape and separated from the joint wires, to prevent draining of the engine. To turn off the engine, just separate the ignition/electrical wire from the battery wire. Take care to prevent any chances of the wires shorting with any car component.
Alternative Method – Drilling Into the Keyhole
- Cordless drill
- Small drill bit
- Take a drill and start drilling into the keyhole about two-third of the way up from below.
- Drill in as deep as the key would normally go.
- While drilling, remove the drill from the keyhole a couple of times. This is because each lock pin has two sections and a spring. When the drill bit is removed, they will fall into position.
- Simply insert a screwdriver in the keyhole and turn it to make the engine come to life. You need not insert the screwdriver in too deep, as the lock is broken.
Note: This method will destroy the ignition lock, making it easy for anyone else with a screwdriver to start/steal your car in the future. Therefore, get the lock replaced/repaired by a mechanic as soon as possible.
Now you know how to hotwire your car in case you are caught up in an emergency. Disclaimer: Only try this on your own car or your parents Corolla. Hotwiring other cars without the owner’s permission might be illegal. This is not how thieves steal cars in real life.
This method will work on vehicles that do not have an engine

Step 2: Steering Column
Here are a few photos of the process. I found it
surprisingly easy to do. Since your not breaking into your own car, I chose to remove everything nicely.

Disconnect the ignition switch on the back of the cylinder (left).
The switch is only held on by two Philips screws.
Now you can use a regular screwdriver to start the car.
Step 4: Steering Lock
To unlock the steering wheel, the ignition switch needs to
be removed. It’s held in by two security screws which I removed with a hammer and pick.
