Everyone needs a home pampering day now and again. Taking a day off just to take care of your mind and body, luxuriate in a bubble bath, and paint your nails can work wonders on your attitude and spirit. No matter how busy you are, if you’re really feeling the need to relax and decompress, then you should treat yourself to a day that is meant to rejuvenate your body and give you the energy and positive thoughts you need to enjoy your life.
Clean up your home the day before. You may not think a tidy space is essential to having a home pampering day, but having a clean and orderly home will actually make you feel much more calm and relaxed.
- Get rid of any sign of your work from your bedroom or whatever room you’ll be staying in. You want this day to be about you, not about finishing that report you’ve been stressing about.
- Empty your dishwasher, water your plants, and do any household chores you can in the evening so you don’t have to think about a single one when you wake up.
Prepare to have a phone and email-free day. You don’t want to be answering emails from work or helping your friends deal with drama during your home pampering day. This day will be all about you, and you can try to forget everyone else as much as you can.
- If you want to leave your phone on for emergencies or check it every few hours because you simply can’t live without it, then you can do that.
Gather all of the materials you’ll need. If you want to have the most successful home pampering day possible, then you don’t want to spend a minute going to the store, checking items off a list, or gathering anything you need, unless that makes you feel more relaxed.
- Relaxing herbal teas
- A face mask
- Bubbles for a bubble bath
- Scented candles
- Cucumbers for your eyes
- Your favorite foods
- Fruit for a smoothie
- Nail polish
- Your favorite classic movie
- Some iced tea or cucumber water
Don’t put any pressure on yourself to do things. The whole point of a home pampering day is that you relax and take care of your body. So, if you wanted to do a manicure and pedicure, take a warm bath, exfoliate your skin, and make a smoothie, along with doing a million other things to make yourself feel relaxed, you may actually be overwhelming yourself by trying to do too much.
Instead, just do what you feel like doing when you wake up, and don’t feel pressured to stick to any schedule. If you feel too obligated to do too much, you won’t be able to relax.
Do what you feel like doing. If putting on a face mask feels like too much of an effort and you’d rather just lie in bed, then you should feel free to do that. Remember that this day is all about relaxing in the best way possible for yourself.
Sleep in. Okay, so you probably don’t want to sleep in past noon and miss half of your home pampering day. That said, you should make sure that you get plenty of rest so that you wake up feeling healthy and refreshed.
Arguably, there is simply nothing better than being able to kick back, relax, and find ways to pamper yourself, especially after a really long, hard day at work, or a day of seemingly endless obligations. But, as we all know too well, oftentimes the greatest and most luxurious ways to pamper ourselves require quite a stash of cash. And, sometimes those of us on a budget just don’t have the funds to spend the big bucks on what we might think of as "nice-to-haves" versus "must-haves."
In our constantly moving worlds, it’s so important to take a timeout for even just a bit of relaxation and "me" time. In fact, according to the Huffington Post, there are plenty of health benefits associated with relaxation. Taking time to #TreatYoSelf might result in those relaxation benefits, including lowering your risk of heart problems, boosting your memory, and even reducing your stroke risk.
So what’s a girl to do when she’s tight on cash, but is eager for some necessary pampering? There is hope. There are countless inexpensive ways that you can pamper yourself, some that don’t even require you to crack up your wallet. Here are a few easy suggestions. And, the greatest part is that most as these can be done from the comfort of your very own home.
1. Give Your Hair An At-Home Hair Treatment
Love that feeling of leaving a salon with a gorgeous ‘do? Don’t we all. You can achieve that silky smooth hair at home without the huge expense by giving yourself an at-home hair treatment. You can do this easily by purchasing a hot oil treatment from your local grocery store or pharmacy, or can make your own treatment, like an avocado remedy. The avocado treatment requires mixing a mashed, ripe avocado with one egg, and applying the mixture to your hair. Leave it on for at least 20 minutes, and then rinse several times. You’ll quickly notice that certain glow is back in your hair.
2. Skip The Salon, And Be Your Own Manicurist
Heading to your nearby nail salon for regular mani-pedis can very quickly become a giant expense. But having beautiful nails doesn’t have to come at such a steep cost. Head to your nearest beauty supply store and do a one-time investment in getting the the manicure tools and polish. Now, you’ll be able to continually give yourself a treatment, and it comes without the cost of a tip. Not great at painting your writing hand? No sweat! Invite a girlfriend over for the home manicure sesh, and you’ll be able to help each other out. Pro tip: Though it’ll cost you more on the onset, it’s totally worth getting a good quality polish brand, as your color will last way longer.
3. Look Into Local Deals
Open you browser to Google, look up local deals, and your wallet will be extremely happy that you did. You’ll easily be able to find great pampering deals through Groupon, Living Social, Amazon Local, and Gilt. These sites regularly offer deals on services you might not have the ability to do yourself, such as massages and blow-outs. I recently bought a 60-minute Swedish massage in my neighborhood for — wait for it — $27. It was the best 60 minutes ever, and cheaper than the simple lunch I had with a friend earlier that day.
4. Try A Staycation
Just because you’re scheduling some vacation days off from work does not mean you need to also book an expensive trip somewhere, especially if you can’t afford it. If you don’t have the extra money right now, try planning a staycation. You can use the time to really disconnect from technology, and reach that perfect point of relaxation. Read a hard copy newspaper, take a walk around your block, grab a coffee with a friend. You’ll find there are so many activities to do around your hometown that you normally don’t get to experience, and it’ll feel great to not have that giant credit bill when you head back to work.
5. Take A Long, Hot Bath
This might sound completely obvious, but taking a bath definitely works to get you in relaxation mode. In fact, according to a study highlighted in the The Telegraph, taking a bath improves general psychological wellness.
Do you have a book you’ve been dying to read, but haven’t had the chance? Well, now’s your time! Draw your bath, surround the tub with candles, put on the most relaxing music you can find, and commit to some quality reading and relaxation time. By the time you step out later, you’re bound to feel refreshed.
6. Write A “Life Is Good!” List
Pampering is really about making yourself feel good. And, what better way to make yourself feel good than by clearly reminding yourself of why your life is good. Making such a list can also help break any bad mood you might be trying to shake.
Take out a notepad and try to come up with at least 15 reasons why you think you are great. Then, try writing down 15 (or more) things you are thankful for that day. Step away from the list for an hour, and reread it later. You’ll find yourself smiling without even having to try. And it’s completely free.
7. Eat Something Sweet
In our daily lives, a lot of us become so wrapped up making sure everything is running perfectly — from work, to juggling family, to our nutrition routine — that we often forgot to stop and take a breath. Sometimes, all we need is a little bite of chocolate to make us feel good.
Pampering yourself might not always seem like the simplest thing to do when you’re on a budget, but it is certainly very possible. By trying some of these tactics, you might find that you’ll feel relaxed, pampered, happy, and without a dent in your bank account.
Together, we will fearlessly navigate through the ups and downs of this crazy thing called life. TMM is a single source destination of inspirational yet relatable content. Welcome to the ultimate band of babes!
Sep 20 The Most Luxurious Ways To Pamper Yourself Without Leaving The House
Unless you’re living that Kylie Jenner lifestyle, weekly trips to the spa are not financially an option. So, what happens when you’re having one of those days and you desperately need a (budget friendly) way to unwind? I’m so happy you asked because, I GOT YOU GIRL. Below are some of my favorite ways to unwind and pamper myself, without leaving the house!
Coconut Oil Is The Answer
Frizzy Hair? Coconut Oil
No Shaving Cream? Coconut Oil
Dry Skin? Coconut Oil
Bad Credit? Coconut Oil
BF Acting Up? Coconut Oil
LOL ok but in all seriousness, one thing that should always be in your cabinet is Coconut Oil. It can solve at least 86 of your problems! Let’s chat hair care: coconut oil serves as a hair conditioner and moisturizer. You can leave it in overnight or condition with a heat cap if you are pressed for time. Coconut oil also provides shine and will leave you feeling like Beyoncè after one application.
Pour Some Sugar On Me
For an at home exfoliate scrub, grab the following ingredients:
1 cup brown sugar
1 cup raw oatmeal
1 cup olive oil
Once mixed together, apply to dry skin. Don’t forget to make slow circles on your body – ENJOY the treatment, don’t rush it or rub too hard on your skin. After gently scrubbing, rinse off and your skin will be singing hallelujiah!!
I also came across a Vanilla and Lavender Body scrub that sounds too heavenly not to share.
2 cups sugar
1 cup grape seed oil
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 tablespoon dried lavender (optional)
12 drops lavender essential oil
Mix all ingredients together in a medium sized bowl and use in the shower or tub, daily.
Take your shower up a notch by hanging a eucalyptus bundle from your shower head. Eucalyptus plants are more than a pretty bouquet to look at. When hanging them in your shower, the steam and heat from the shower helps to release aromatherapy powers. Not only does the aromatherapy work wonders for your body but it also serves as a relaxing treat for your mind.
Hide Behind A Mask
One of my favorite ways to pamper myself is by putting on a mask. What mask do you swear by? I love recommendations so leave a comment at the end of this post, please 🙂 Here are some of my favorites:

Turn The Lights Off
Few things are more peaceful than a candle lit bath and or shower. Turn on the water, light your favorite scented candles and let the day wash away as the candles flicker on the other side of the curtain.
The Little Things
Sometimes the most mind blowing treatment you can give yourself is simply plopping down on the couch and doing nothing but listening to silence. Pure and utter silence. We tend to get caught up in the idea that we need to partake in an extravagant gesture to unwind or to treat ourselves. Reality is, the little things tend to have the biggest most beneficial effects. So, pour yourself a glass of wine, turn on your favorite song and dance around your place. Call a friend to TALK on the phone. Look in the mirror and say, I love you to the reflection that is staring back. Enjoy a piece of chocolate and taste each and every single bite. Open a new book and get lost in the pages. Relax my friend, relax. YOU deserve it.
Ok so this doesn’t fall under the category of at home spa treatments but it’s worth chatting about anyway. Sometimes, splurging on a massage or a facial is a luxurious treat to yourself that you’ve been craving. Before you book the appointment, do your credit card bill a favor and check both Groupon and Living Social. Both sites offer serious discounts for spa services #YassHoney – no shame in the coupon game!
As soon as I walk in the door after work…
I can immediately tell if Toby or Anton had a rough day. They’ll walk up, say “Mommmmmmmy” and slump onto me. Their stressed little faces break my heart, and for years, my first instinct was to try to make it better.
Problem with a friend? It will be fine tomorrow, I’m sure! Tough time on a test? You’ll figure it out! Teacher gave you a time out? You’re still a great kid!
But now, over time, I’ve realized what the boys really want: for me just to be there.
I recently read a great article in the Washington Post, and here’s what it said:
“Parents are taking so much responsibility for their children’s mood and spirit that it feels like it’s your job to reset as soon as possible,” says Wendy Mogel, clinical psychologist and the author of The Blessing of a Skinned Knee: Raising Self-Reliant Children. “It deprives them of the opportunity to be crabby and cross when they finish school or at the end of a day of camp.”
Part of the reason kids may be upset when they get home is that home is “the soft landing,” Mogel says. It’s the place they feel comfortable enough to get it all out. “They followed all those rules all day. They were polite to all the teachers. It’s exhausting”…
She suggests parents practice “reflective listening.” So, for instance, a child comes home and is frustrated after a tough day in math class. The parent then says, “Wow, it sounds like math was really overwhelming today.” Then the child says something else, and the parent reflects their feelings back to them. “Each time they feel heard, it brings the emotion down and they can see it for what it is,” she says.
Doesn’t that ring true? Now if the boys are upset after a long day, I let them vent in a calm space. I’ll repeat back their emotions and validate their feelings. And I’ve been surprised by how well that simple approach has worked. After getting things off their chest, they almost always feel better and go off to play with their toys or read a book or (true to form) beg for more dessert.
Thoughts? What do you do when your child has a bad day? What do you crave for yourself at the end of a long one?
Mother’s Day is now behind us, and memories of choking down cold eggs in bed with a smile on your face are beginning to fade, along with the cut flowers you may have received. We have good news for you, though. Even if Mother’s Day didn’t exactly leave you feeling pampered and spoiled they year, all is not lost. There are lots of little ways that you can pamper yourself, all year long. Today we’re highlighting five suggestions that can turn any day into Mother’s Day, or at least help you turn your mood around.
Five Ways to Pamper Yourself all Year Long
1. Head Outside
Did you know that there’s actually research that suggests that being in nature has health benefits like lowearing blood pressure and fighting depression? With sunny days ahead of us, that’s great news. Taking even 15 or 20 minutes to head outside when you’re having a bad day can help turn things around. Whether that’s taking a quick walk over your lunch hour, or loading your toddler into the double stroller and getting a dose of fresh air and sunshine, spending a little bit of time in nature is a free way to pamper yourself anytime.
2. Buy the Good Moisturizer
Little indulgences – like splurging on lotion that smells fabulous or springing for the good shampoo – can really make you feel pampered. And the best part is that you’ll feel that way again each and every time you use it. If you do your research and choose non-toxic products you’ll feel even better, because you’ll know that great smell doesn’t come at a cost to your health. Yes, it may cost a little more, but your well-being is worth a little splurge now and again.
3. Make a Date with a Friend
When you’re a busy mom, all too often your relationships with your friends can end up on the back burner. A girls’ night out ends up at the end of your list, behind everything else you have to do. If you make the time to get out and socialize, though, it can have a huge positive impact on your mood. In fact, just like being in nature, spending time socializing has proven health benefits. If you can’t get away from your kids, make a date at a kid-friendly Toronto spot so that you can catch up while your little ones play.
4. Book the Haircut You’ve Been Putting Off
How long has it been since your last haircut? When was the last time you had a manicure? What about a massage? It’s hard to find time for yourself, we understand. But finding an hour to escape and do something to take care of your health and well-being can have benefits that last far after the appointment is over. Not just for you, but for partner, kids and even your co-workers, who see you every day. Call on your friends and family for help making it happen. Hire a sitter or arrange a childcare swap with a friend. It may not be easy, but we know it will be worth it.
5. Throw the Rules out the Window
We all know that serving healthy, well-balanced family dinners is important. We’ve all heard that we should limit screen time, create structure for our kids and enforce limits. This is all true … most of the time. But rules are made to be broken, and sometimes that means letting the rules slide. Call out for pizza and eat dinner in front of a movie the whole family enjoys. Or do something else that you and your kids will enjoy, to shake up your routine. It’s like taking a vacation at home, and it has the added bonus of not having to endure the stress and hassle of packing and travelling.
