Insulate yourself in the darkest and quietest room in the house. Muffle outside sounds, if possible. Wear earplugs. Consider sleeping on the couch if your living room has fewer windows than your bedroom. Adjust the temperature to your liking. You are more likely to fall asleep in your personal ideal conditions, regardless of the weather outside.

Sleep with someone. A common piece of advice for those agitated by thunderstorms is to snuggle up to someone else. Allow a child to sleep with you to calm their fears. Sneak into a sibling’s bed. Regardless of whether the storm is causing you fear or distraction, the knowledge that someone is next to you will do wonders for your state of mind.

Breathe deeply. Most people who toss and turn during a thunderstorm are so occupied with listening to the rain that they forget to breathe regularly. Concentrate on deep breaths, and you will soon forget about the raging thunder outside.

Light a scented candle. Smell is the strongest sense linked to memory and positive thoughts. A pleasant odor and a flicker of light will calm your nerves considerably.

Read a book. A boring book is even better. Not only will reading take your mind off the lightning, but books are a common way to get insomniacs to start snoring.

All of this noise combined with high temperatures up to 30 degrees makes it very difficult to drift into a peaceful slumber. She said: “If you are a light sleeper and loud rain and thunder will easily wake you, then it’s a wise choice to invest in a good pair of earplugs so you can experience a peaceful and undisturbed night’s sleep.

“If you are worried about not hearing your alarm the following morning, try inserting just one earplug in the opposite ear you rest your head on, in order to block out as much of the storms noise as possible without the chance of being late for work the next morning!”

Many people hail sleep apps such as Calm or Headspace as miracle cures to sleepless nights.

These sleep meditation apps could be the key to falling asleep during a thunderstorm.

Lucy said: “Focusing on something specific that distracts your focus away from the outside noise will help with preparing your body for sleep.

“Pop in your headphones and listen to some relaxing music or podcasts, or alternatively try downloading one of the increasingly popular apps designed to help users drift off to sleep more quickly.”

Planning

To be able to sleep through a storm, you will need to be in a deep sleep before it hits.

Planning your bedtime around the weather forecast is a good idea, Lucy said.

She explained: “Try to plan ahead and keep checking the weather forecast for when it’s likely to hit your local area.

“If a trusted weather source says thunder and heavy rain is forecast for 12.30am for example, then make sure you are in bed at least 2 hours beforehand as you’ll be less likely to wake up if you’re already in a deep sleep and significantly into your nightly sleep cycle.”

Blackout blinds or curtains

Blackout blinds and curtains are another way you can distance yourself from the thunderstorm and get a good nights sleep.

Lucy said: “If you haven’t already, invest in some blackout blinds or curtains for your bedroom.

“Creating a pitch-black atmosphere in your room will signal to your eyes and brain that it’s time to shut down for the night and enjoy some well-deserved rest.

“The last thing you need waking you is flashes of lightning creeping through your window in the middle of the night.”

Don’t worry

Stressing about a poor night of sleep is only going to make the situation worse.

Lucy advises getting yourself into a relaxed headspace before bed.

She said: “Reassure yourself that one night of poor rest won’t be the end of the world.

“The more you start thinking about not being able to sleep, the more likely it is that your worries will manifest into a self-fulfilling prophecy!

“So, try to relax and remember that it’s highly unlikely you’ll be the only person in your office the next morning who needs that extra-large shot of espresso in their coffee to make it through the day!”

Don’t sleep alone

Many of us leave our partners, friends or family members in our shared bed alone, instead opting for the sofa during a hot night.

Humidity makes it uncomfortable being so close to someone at night.

However, if you struggle to sleep during a thunderstorm it might be better to sleep with a ‘thunder buddy’, said Lucy.

She said: “Having a partner, family member or friend there will bring you comfort if you are disturbed or scared of the noises that a thunderstorm can bring with it.”

I am sharing the method I used to help my daughter go from crawling up into my lap during thunderstorms to sitting in a chair at the door watching the rain that “looks like diamonds falling from the sky” (her words!).

How to stop being afraid of thunderstorms

Thunderstorm fear can come out of nowhere. My daughter had never said a word about the weather until a few months ago.

I got an Amazon Echo for Christmas and I love it. We use it literally every day (especially for Amazon Music to play the soundtrack for every. single. animated movie. we have ever seen). It is great exercise, super fun, and great mommy & me time. It even finds my missing cell phone. However…

Lately, “Alexa” has become our weather girl. My daughter is constantly asking “Alexa, what is the weather today?” as she nervously stares out the window studying the sky. If Alexa mentions showers or (gasp) thunderstorms… the rest if the day is spent asking about what time the storm is starting or checking out the window for rain.

This is just not typical behavior for her so I was pretty desperate to help. I looked at a couple of resources I have used before then pulled together a plan. After about a month (lots of summer storms!) she is feeling much better and now says that storms are “pretty”.

Helping your child overcome a fear of thunderstorms:

Knowledge is power

When we understand something, it immediately become less scary. Use truthful and factual information to explain to a child what is happening in the sky (being as age appropriate as possible). I have found that using old saying such as “the angels are bowling” just cause more confusion. Using a few resources that are great for finding kid-sized answers, we learned about what causes lightning and thunder. Discuss the benefits of rain

While we are learning about what storms are, we also talk about why they are important. (Such as rain makes plants grow, we eat plants, animals eat plants, it fills our rivers for the fish…). We learned some of these things in the book Franklin and the Thunderstorm.

Provide comfort

Besides Mom’s comforting hugs, let your child find a security item to hold during a storm. A special blanket, stuffed animal, or favorite book can go a long way in providing some security when a child is scared. There are also some great options for kids such as Weighted blankets (designed to help reduce anxiety), fidget spinners (used for their originally intended purpose), or non-spinning fidget toys, All are great options for providing comfort and/or distraction during a storm.

Reduce the effects of the storm

Try to reduce anxiety by minimizing the sensory aspects of the storm. Keep the blinds drawn so they can’t see the rain and wind. Get them to a room where the storm is not as loud. Noise canceling headphones are a great way to reduce or even eliminate the sounds of a thunderstorm. You can also help by providing a distraction that keeps their mind occupied and off of the storm. This might be an iPad, video games, their favorite music, reading books, building a puzzle, or watching their favorite movie. I often used a combination of these to distract my daughter during the worst parts of the storm.

Have a Thunderstorm Party!

When you can’t beat ’em, join ’em! When a storm is brewing and nerves start to flare, have a Thunderstorm Party! Maybe that means everyone gets their sleeping bag, eats cookies in the living room, and plays a board game (something distracting like Pie Face!). You can keep a “Thunderstorm party box” of activities and treats and pull it out any time a storm is on its way. Try an indoor activity. Whatever tradition you decide on, make it upbeat and fun so a storm can be something the kids look forward to, instead of fear. (Thunderstorm parties might work best after you have made some progress with their fear through education and other comfort measures).

*Astraphobia (fear of thunderstorms) is a real condition and nothing to be made light of. Sometimes children just need to understand a phenomenon so they don’t fear it. Then other times there is an actual problem. If you are concerned about your child’s fear of thunderstorms, please discuss with your pediatrician or health care professional.

A thunderstorm is a powerful force of nature that has the potential to cause destruction.

Why is it then that we find listening to a storm so soothing? What is it about the tremulous sound of thunder and heavy rain that we find relaxing?

Interestingly, some clever people at the Brighton and Sussex Medical School looked into this exact question.

Their study found that sounds from nature – including rain, ocean waves caressing the shore, flowing streams, and thunder – have a relaxing effect on brains, physically adjusting the way our brains work by reducing our brain’s fight-or-flight instinct. In other words, lowering feelings of stress and anxiety.

The research findings reported that listening to nature sounds increases focused attention, allowing for greater relaxation (1).

It’s one thing being out in a thunderstorm – that can be pretty scary – and another looking out of the window with your slouch pants on and a hot drink in hand. The latter is far safer, of course.

There’s something about the rain running down the window pane, seeing the flashes of lightening off in the distance, and hearing the roar of Mother Nature (thunder) that roots you in the present moment.

It makes you take a moment and marvel at the universe. It reminds you of how insignificant we are in the face of such vast power, but yet what an amazing thing we are part of at the same time.

And for that very reason, we developed the Theta Thunderstorm meditation.

How to Use the Theta Thunderstorm Meditation

Theta Thunder is purposefully designed for relaxation and providing a sense of inner calm and comfort.

It is best listened to in closed-back headphones that block the sound into your ears and give you that in-stage (isolated) feeling, whereby the rest of the world and its distractions are blocked out.

13. sleep (something) off – sleep until you do not feel ill anymore, especially after drinking too much alcohol

E.g: He went to his room to sleep it off.

14. sleep on it – delay making a decision until the following day
