In this tutorial, we will show you how to draw a fairy. You may have met a fairy in the cartoons and on the pages of magazines.
A fairy is a fabulous creature, she is very small in size and has unique abilities. Most fairies are kind characters. As we can see, our fairy has a small dress, high wings, and cute shoes. This image makes her very tender. This fairy lives in the land of elves. Fairies’ favorite color is green, that’s why we see a fairy in a green dress.
How to Draw a Fairy
Step 1 – Draw the Basic Outlines of the Body
Firstly, sketch out the outlines of the fairy’s torso. This is a very graceful creature, so it is best to use small, elongated ovals. As in any female figure, the pelvis, in this case, should be much wider than the shoulders. A smooth curved line that mimics the spine will help you in the correct positioning of these ovals.
Step 2 – Sketch the Arms and Legs
You can create any pose for your fairy. In our case, the fairy slightly spreads her arms to the sides and brings her knees together. If you want to create the same pose, sketch out the arms and legs using smooth, curved lines as in our sample.
Step 3 – Outline the Contours of the Torso
Connect the pelvis and chest using rounded, flowing lines. These lines should emphasize the gracefulness of the female figure and smooth expansion after a narrow waist. Also, draw a vertical line for the face to indicate symmetry and a horizontal line to indicate the eyes.
Step 4 – Draw Fairy Hands
Draw the smooth, graceful outlines of our fairy’s hands. Due to the cartoon style, the length of the hands is equal to the length of the forearms.
Step 5 – Draw Fairy Feet
Draw the outlines of our fairy’s legs. As you can see, these are fairly wide contours that taper smoothly towards the joints. … Note the typical curvature of the shins.
Step 6 – Sketch the Eyes and Mouth of the Fairy
Use the facial lines to draw the outlines of the eyes and mouth. So you may notice large, almond-shaped eyes and plump lips. Don’t forget about the nose, which looks like a short line.
Step 7 – Sketch a Hairstyle of the Fairy
Draw the outlines of the hairstyle. In fact, you can create any hairstyle for your fairy. By the way, we decided to use smooth, rounded lines to create a traditional feminine hairstyle with fluffy bangs.
Step 8 – Draw Fairy Clothes
So, we made a rough outline of the face and head of our beautiful fairy. Now sketch out the smooth outlines of the shoulders and the upper part of this little charmer.
Step 9 – Sketch the Outlines of the Arms
Draw the flowing, graceful outlines of the shoulders and forearms. The forearms have minimal extension in the proximal part. Also, avoid too sharp contractions and extensions.
Step 10 – Draw the Hands of a Fairy
Now is the time to finish the work with our character’s hands, isn’t it? Draw long, thin fingers. Pay attention to the shape and size of our sorceress’s fingers. In addition, match the position of the thumb with the other fingers in the palm.
Step 11 – Draw the Hips and Dress
Draw the outlines of the dress and the top of the legs of our fairytale character. You can choose the outline of the dress according to your imagination.
Step 12 – Draw Fairy Shoes
Choose a shoe shape for this lovely fairy. We decided to paint large, rounded decorations on each shoe. You can add laces, heels, or other parts of the shoe.
Step 13 Draw Fairy Wings
Fairies are pretty fast and mobile. These cute creatures have thin elastic wings that help them to very quickly find themselves in the thick of things. Each wing consists of a long elongated part and a rounded part. The contours of the wings are very similar to that of a butterfly.
Step 14 – Erase the Guidelines
To make your drawing of a fairy look really beautiful and complete, erase all auxiliary guidelines. So you can darken the lines of your drawing of the fairy to make it more expressive.
Step 15 – Color the Fairy
Choose the perfect colors for this lovely fairy. Come up with a suitable color for the skin of the eyes, hair, and clothes of our character. Don’t forget that all shades are beautiful. The ideal color for the wings is light blue.
How do you feel about this drawing lesson? Are you happy with the result? As a result of the work done, the fairy should look very gentle and charming. If you have chosen all the colors correctly, then the fairy should look very impressive. Did you have any difficulties? Great! Let’s begin with the head. To illustrate this part of the body, simply use a large oval shape. The body can be made using a small rectangle. The dress is done with another rectangle that is narrower on top.
The hair is sketch with several curved lines. The arms are made from small rectangles. The legs are also made from small rectangles and the shoes are created using circles.
You can use two large circles to represent the eyes. Make sure that the hair is partially covering these eyes. Wings are drawn using large rectangles with round corners.
Move on to the fourth step by adding pupils inside the eyes. These shapes are slightly close to each other. The magic stick is drawn using a rectangular shape and a small star.
Inside the pupils, you can draw small oval shapes. These shapes are illustrating the effect of lighting inside the pupils. The nose and the mouth are made from curved lines.
Great job! This cartoon illustration is now completely done! As you can see on this black and white version, you need to draw just enough details to make this character recognizable without having to spend hours drawing this cute fairy.

These lessons on how to draw a fairy are filled with cute characters that are easy to illustrate. I will show you how to create a few simple versions using mostly rectangles, circles and oval shapes. Unlike some tutorials from this site, no characters are created using complex shadows, patterns, highlights or weird textures. All you need to know is how to sketch basic shapes and draw simple lines.
Fairies are mythical creatures often depicted with wings and some sort of magical stick. These characters are usually very small, often only a few inches in height. We can find them everywhere, from books, movies, music and modern culture. We can trace the first fairies a few centuries ago. Let’s see how we can draw fairies in just a few easy steps using all lessons below. 🙂
Using rectangles to draw a delicate character
Our first fairy clipart is created mostly from rectangles. This particular shape might seem inappropriate for such a delicate character. However, we can make it work if we are using other smoother shapes to complete this tutorial. First, draw the head and body using these sharp rectangles. Feet are made from curved lines.
You can draw hair using long curved lines. Arms are made from more small lines. Eyes and pupils are created using very large circles. Notice how a portion of these circles are cropped by the head of the fairy. Complete this lesson by adding short wings and a long curved smile. A few plain colors are added inside our subject.
A more traditional version using beautiful circles
Now that we have seen that drawing a cute character using rectangle is possible, let’s draw a fairy using perfect circles. This version is the most popular version of this character that you can find on the site. First, sketch the head using an oval shape with a narrower top. The body is made from a square and the skirt from a rectangle.
Add hair using long curved lines. Arms and legs are done with more cute curved lines. Since the subject is flying, both feet are up (behind the creature). Draw large eyes and pupils using circles. Wings are represented by long rectangle with smooth ends. Add plain colors and you are finished! Unlike all versions found here, this character doesn’t have any outlines.
Let’s use perspective to create something different
Learning how to draw a fairy made from basic shapes is easy, but what happens if we are working with a different perspective? In this lesson, the character is facing us while the body is visible from a slight angle. Both the head and body are done using circles. Arms are tiny compared to the hands.
Wings are large and made from irregular lines. Feet are tiny and created using triangles. It’s the only character who is NOT filled with plain colors. Instead, the fairy is colored using gradients. This creature is happy, that’s why it’s important to create a large open mouth with a visible tongue.
Learning how to draw a fairy using irregular lines
The posture of this cartoon fairy is slightly more complex than all previous tutorials. Both arms and hands are active as we can see below. The head is represented by a large circular shape. Hair is done using curved lines. Wings are also large and not very constant.
A simple pattern is created on the skirt of the fairy. The face is pretty basic. Eyes are made from dots and the mouth is done using a long curved line. Plain colors are added inside the illustration once all body parts are created. The magical stick is filled with both colors found inside the dress.
Nice work! I hope you had fun learning how to draw a fairy using all examples found on this page. Don’t hesitate to draw more cartoon fairies using all tips and techniques learned here. Since these are mythical creatures, you can use your imagination and add more features, more textures and more patterns. More lessons from this series can be found here.

How to draw fairies – This is the tutorial you were looking for to realize a perfect drawing of a Fairy.
A fairy is a type of mythological being or legendary creature, a form of spirit, often described as metaphysical, supernatural or preternatural.
How to draw fairies – Let’s get started!
We’ll draw not one but two Fairies in this tutorial so you get twice the effect with the same effort. Let’s get prepared for the ride.
We are going to draw two fairies interacting with each other. As these little creatures are supposed to have a human body we’ll sketch them as if we were drawing human female characters with slightly different features.
Sketch a large circle for the head, a thin neck and a couple of elongated circles for the torso and hip region.
How to draw fairies – sketching the bodies
As if you were drawing ant legs sketch the arms and legs of the fairies with long sticks. The hands are small balls and the feet small triangles.
Fairies wouldn’t be such if they had no wings so go on and draw big insect like wings. Two pairs for each one. Then use black pencil to start defining the real shape of the bodies over the sketch.
Fairies resemble various beings of other mythologies, though even folklore that uses the term fairy offers many definitions. Sometimes the term describes any magical creature, including goblins or gnomes: at other times, the term only describes a specific type of more ethereal creature.
How to draw fairies – defining the bodies
Using the sketched lines as a guide start to add a bit of flesh to it defining better the shapes of arms and legs.
Also add long hairs with many curling wisps!
These two are looking more and more like real fairies! Start reducing the number of construction lines and define what is in front of what. For example the wings of the fairy on the right are partially covered by the fairy itself and those of the fairy on the left are partially covered by her hairs.
How to draw fairies – looking good!
Remove all of the construction lines and unveil the beauty of the fairies. Now it’s time to adding the final touches and details!
Fairies are two beauties so draw angelic faces for them and long pointy ears. Tight corsettes around their elongated bodies and short skirts.
Also put two beautiful flowers in their hands.
Fairies are generally described as human in appearance and having magical powers. Their origins are less clear in the folklore, being variously dead, or some form of demon, or a species completely independent of humans or angels.
How to draw fairies – Let’s finish it
Time to add all those small details to finish the drawing. Divide the long hairs in smaller wisps and add a texture or pattern to the small dresses. Be sure to remove the lines that are not supposed to be seen and voila! You two beautiful Fairies are ready!
