How to make vegetable glycerin

Vegetable glycerin is a versatile ingredient. It can be used to make homemade cosmetics, certain food products and even candles and lotions.В (h/t to OrganicFacts.net)

What is vegetable glycerin?

Vegetable glycerin, also called glycerol or glycerine, is a clear liquid that’s usually made from coconut, palm or soybean oils.

Vegetable glycerin is odorless and it has a mild, sweet taste. This ingredient has a syrup-like consistency and can be used to make cosmetics or certain food products.

Vegetable glycerin is added to foods to help oil and water-based ingredients mix. It is also used to sweeten or moisten food. Additionally, vegetable glycerin canВ prevent ice crystals from forming in frozen foods like ice cream.

Vegetable glycerin is used to make toothpaste and it helps prevent the toothpaste from drying out or hardening in the tube. Finally, it is addedВ to candles,В deodorants,В lotions, makeup andВ soaps.

You can buy vegetable glycerin in vape shops, pharmacies, supermarkets or online stores. When buyingВ vegetable glycerin, consider these factors:

  • When buying glycerin for culinary use, make sure the product you buy is food grade.
  • Look for 100 percent or pure glycerin. Pure vegetable glycerin has a long shelf life and doesn’t oxidize.
  • Always check the expiration date. Vegetable glycerin usually expires one year from the date of manufacturing.

Make your own vegetable glycerin

To make vegetable glycerin, you must heat triglyceride-rich vegetable fats and combine it with a strong alkali like lye.

Follow the recipe to make your own vegetable glycerin at home. You will need a saucepan and a food thermometer.

Ingredients:

  • 1 Cup coconut oil
  • 1 Cup olive oil
  • 1 Cup water
  • 1/2 Cup salt
  • 2 Tbsp lye

Preparation:

  1. Combine the coconut oil and olive oil in a saucepan and stir the mixture.В Heat the mixture for 2 minutes or until the coconut oil melts.
  2. Pour the water in aВ heat-safe glass container, then add 2 tablespoons of lye.
  3. Add the lye and water mixture to the saucepan. Stir until all the ingredients are combined.
  4. Heat the mixture for 20 minutes or until it reaches 125 F.
  5. Once you have achieved the above-mentioned temperature, turn down the heat to medium-low, until it reaches 100 F. Continue stirring for 15 minutes until the mixture is thicker.
  6. Remove the saucepan from heat, then add half a cup of salt. Stir well.
  7. Let the mixture rest for 30 minutes or until the soap and glycerin separate into different layers.
  8. Use a clean spoon to remove the layer of soap. Store it in a different container.
  9. Transfer the glycerin into an airtight glass bottle and refrigerate it. Vegetable glycerin can last for four weeks, but if you see a cloudy texture or if it smells off, don’t use it.

If you don’t have coconut and olive oil, useВ jojoba,В palm or vegetable oils.

To make DIY soap, pour the soap into a mold and freeze it for 24 hours. Air-dry the soap for at least three weeks to finish curing it before use.В (Related:В How to make your own DIY liquid hand soap and laundry soap.)

Since vegetable glycerin is made after exposing your ingredients toВ high temperatures, it is best to wear safety gear like a face mask, goggles, pants and a long-sleeved shirt.В If the mixtures come in contact with your bare skin, flush the affected area with cold water and consult a physician as needed.

Considerations when using vegetable glycerin

Vegetable glycerin is generally considered safe, but if you’re not used to applying products that containВ vegetable glycerin, do a patch test first to see how your skin reacts.

When ingested, vegetable glycerin can cause symptoms such as:

  • Dizziness
  • Excessive thirst
  • Headaches
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting

Note that glycerin is a form of sugar alcohol that your body can’t fully absorb. If you consume too much vegetable glycerin, you may also experience symptoms like diarrhea and gas.

How to make vegetable glycerin

Have you been searching for an alternative to alcohol-based tinctures? Looking for a way to extract and preserve your herbs? Vegetable glycerine, the sweet principle of oils, was discovered in 1789 and came into use by herbalists around 1846. This liquid is obtained by the hydrolysis of vegetable fats or fixed oils.

The food grade vegetable glycerine offered by Mountain Rose Herbs is certified organic and kosher, making it a great option. Sometimes referred to as glycerol, glycerine is a clear, colorless, and odorless liquid with an incredibly sweet taste having the consistency of thick syrup. Glycerine has been used as an ingredient in toothpaste, shampoos, soaps, herbal remedies, and many other household items.

Glycerine is also a great solvent for extracting constituents from plants without the use of alcohol. These extracts are known as “glycerites” and are an excellent choice for administering herbal support to people who are sensitive to alcohol for any reason. Glycerine has anti-fermentative properties that are efficient for preservation. A glycerite has a shelf life of 14-24 months, versus an alcohol extract with a shelf life of 4-6 years.

When making a glycerite with dried herbs, it is common to use water to rehydrate the herbs and loosen up the botanical matter. Generally a mixture with 60% or more glycerin to 40% or less water is a safe ratio. To err on the side of safety, I go with a 75% glycerine to 25% water ratio. If you are working with fresh moist herb, you can go with 100% glycerine for your extract – just be sure to muddle well.

  3. Pour liquid mixture over the herb and completely cover to fill the jar.
  4. Label container with date, ratio of glycerine to water, and herbs used.
  5. Agitate daily for 4-6 weeks.
  6. Strain with cheesecloth, bottle, label!

Note: If you used a fine powder you may need to double filter, and even filter through a coffee filter to ensure that no botanical material remains in your glycerite.

Tincture #2: Cannabis-Infused Glycerin

Vegetable glycerin is an ideal alternative to alcohol when it comes to infusing cannabis tinctures. It is naturally sweet, so keep that in mind when using this infusion in your edible creations.

Ingredients

  • 7 grams cannabis decarbed
  • 4 ounces vegetable glycerin food-grade

Instructions

In a small mason jar, combine the decarbed cannabis with the glycerin. Seal the lid and shake to mix the ingredients.

Place your mason jar on a heat-safe silicon pad or small folded towel (to prevent the jar from breaking) in your slow-cooker. Carefully fill the slow-cooker with water until it’s at the halfway point.

Place the lid on your slow-cooker and heat for 24 hours on the lowest setting (preferably the ‘warm’ setting). Remove the mason jar and shake every couple hours if you can.

After 24 hours, remove the mason jar and allow to cool (slightly) for 15 minutes.

While the tincture is cooling, secure cheesecloth around a funnel small enough to fit the opening of your glass eyedropper bottle (if using) with a rubberband. Otherwise, line a fine-mesh strainer with cheesecloth.

Carefully pour your slightly cooled tincture through the cheesecloth, collecting the ground cannabis in the middle of the cheesecloth. Once all the liquid has filtered through the cheesecloth, gather the edges and squeeze as much of the liquid out as you can.

Allow the tincture to cool completely before closing the lid of your container.

1. Take the herbs that you have chosen and cut into small pieces if they are fresh or crush them with your hands, if they are dry.

2. Take a glass bottle and drop in the herbs. Wet the herbs with little bit of water till the herbs are moistened, if they are dried. If they are fresh herbs, skip the water.

3. Fill the bottle with vegetable glycerin till the herbs are fully immersed and cap it tightly.

4. Take a large pan and fill it with water. Take a kitchen towel, fold and keep it at the base of the pan, this prevents the bottle from cracking.

5. Place the bottle on top of the cloth and take another cloth and cover
the pan to retain the heat, as a lid won’t fit above the bottle. Heat
the water and once it gets hot, lower the flame as much as possible. The water should not boil but should be hot enough the entire time. Let the bottle be in the pan for 3 hours. Each one suggest different timings for boiling the herbs from 2 hours to 10 hours! I went with 3 hours.

6. Remove, let cool and pour in small bottles. The individual dosage depends on the herb that you are using. For internal consumption for adults, around 10 to 15 drops of this eucalyptus tincture twice a day after food. To use it as gargle for kids, mix around 15 drops in 1/4 cup water and gargle with it.

  • The color of the final product depends on the herbs that you are using and the amount of time you are boiling.
  • You can crush the leaves finely, which I realized I didn’t do for maximum extraction.
  • Glycerin tinctures spoil faster than alcohol based tinctures and the shelf life is from 6 to 8 months.
  • Glycerin tinctures taste sweet which makes it easier for the kids to swallow so try it with different herbs.
