From centuries ago, the wonderful uses of vinegar in hair care have been discovered and thoroughly utilized.
With these ubiquitous and easy-to-find ingredients, you can make your hair silky and shiny or even revitalize its texture.
However, the amount of acid in the vinegar will also make you wonder if it is harmful to your hair or not. How long should it leave? Or what kind of vinegar is recommended to use for the best hair conditioning effect?
In this article, we’ll help you answer your questions and provide you with essential information so you can optimize the use of vinegar in your hair care.
Can vinegar damage your hair?
The vinegar won’t damage your hair; however, it also makes your hair dry and breakage more likely if overused.
Because the pH level is slightly more acidic than apple cider vinegar, you must dilute it with more water.
The proportion of ¼ cup white distilled vinegar and ½ amount of filtered water, then apply to wet hair and don’t use it more than once a week.
What does white vinegar do to your hair?
White vinegar or even cider vinegar will work to balance the pH of your hair and scalp. The ingredients in vinegar will help lower the pH of the hair, cause the cuticles to lie flat, and create a protective seal.
That’s why it can make your hair smoother and easier to detangle, less frizzy, shinier, more moisturized, and less prone to breakage.
On the other hand, if used in inappropriate amounts and levels, it can strip away some of the hair’s natural oils.
Some other uses of vinegar:
- Tone Balayage Hair
- Detox dreadlock
- Get Beeswax Out Of Your Hair
Does white vinegar change hair color?
Vinegar does not strip permanent hair coloring; it can only partially change the shade. Sometimes people can also use vinegar to lighten hair.
That is why people who dye their hair should avoid white vinegar if they do not want to change their current favorite hair color.
Maybe you thought that acids are highly bleaching, and the amount of acid in white vinegar affect can change hair color. But the truth is it can’t.
Besides, it will be good news to know that many studies have shown that vinegar can make a great hair rinse and bring out the natural shine..
How long should you leave the vinegar in your hair?
According to Diane Irons – author of “World’s Best Beauty Secrets,” white vinegar can provide an effective solution to create or increase hair brightness.
To get the results you want, you should leave the vinegar in your hair for about 10 minutes or more before rinsing and conditioning your hair as usual.
However, if you use good quality apple cider vinegar like Bragg’s, you just need to let the apple cider vinegar mixture and water stay in your hair for 2-3 minutes to soak in before removing it from your hair. So your hair will be shinier, smoother, and less frizzy.
Can I leave white vinegar in my hair overnight?
You are advised to use white vinegar in detox stages which is the mixture of vinegar rinsing with shampoo.
You should still leave it on your hair for at least a few minutes before rinsing.
Especially, when you use white vinegar at a safe ratio for your hair, you can leave it on overnight without worrying about damaged hair. It can also help keep your hair from tangling.
What vinegar is best for hair?
It can be said that, compared to white vinegar, apple cider vinegar is used more and more popular in hair care.
Apple cider vinegar is always praised for being rich in vitamins and minerals good for hair, like vitamin B and C.
Furthermore, many people point out that apple cider vinegar contains alpha-hydroxy acid helping in exfoliation of the scalp skin, anti-inflammatory, and can help treat dandruff. That’s why apple cider vinegar is considered the best vinegar for hair.

Why transition the kitchen ingredient to your beauty routine? “Just like your face and neck, your scalp also needs some TLC every once in a while,” explains S.W. Basics founder and Skin Cleanse author Adina Grigore (who’s also a big believer in the prettifying power of pantry items). “By applying apple cider vinegar, you’re helping to balance the pH of your scalp and clear excess buildup—which gives you healthier, shinier hair.”
The promise of commercial-level shine and volume is more than a little enticing (which might explain why apple cider vinegar’s cropping up in more beauty products than ever before). So I decided to take my trusty, kale salad-ready bottle of vinegar and relocate it to my shower to test out the trend for myself.
This is what happened when I tried rinsing my hair with apple cider vinegar.

Round one of my (diluted) apple cider vinegar treatment gave mixed results
Having learned the hard way that you shouldn’t down an undiluted shot of apple cider vinegar, I decide to ease myself into this trial by starting with a styling product that includes the vinegar rather than the OG ingredient itself (hey, baby steps). After a long day at the beach, my hair is pretty worse for the wear; straggly and sandy, my look has crossed from beachy waves to full-on drowned mermaid territory.
Since I shampooed this morning, I’m hoping the Younghee Essential Rinse Scalp Toner will be the perfect way to get my locks back into manageable shape. Apple extract and apple cider vinegar are the first two ingredients (after water), followed by botanical oils to mask the smell and honey for a hydrating boost.
I pump five splashes of the product (which looks like a dark apple c5ider vinegar) into my hands, and it feels just like a face toner—a fact, I’ll admit, I’m not especially thrilled about. The thin liquid doesn’t work into a satisfying lather, and with it slipping through my fingers (and down my arms), covering my tresses from roots to strands becomes a Sisyphean task. I do the best I can and let it sit for five minutes as instructed.
If your hair’s dyed (like mine), an apple cider vinegar rinse could be the avocado you never realized your toast needed.
But after letting my hair air-dry, I’m shocked to see that my drowned locks have sprung back to life—literally: There’s major volume going on, and everything looks a whole lot softer. This is because the enzymes from the fermented apple close and smooth the hair cuticle. At least, that’s what Lucy Vincent, founder of the hair-care brand Sans[ceuticals] (which makes an apple cider vinegar-accented pH-balancing product), tells me. “This is the protective layer that locks in vital lipids, proteins, and moisture. [Protecting it] restores condition and shine, and prevents color pigment loss,” she says. So if your hair’s dyed (like mine), an apple cider vinegar rinse could be the avocado you never realized your toast needed.
The one downside: Running my fingers through my strands isn’t exactly an option after my shower. (Some people swear by apple cider vinegar as a natural detangler, but it didn’t work its magic on my knotty mop.) I’d still say the toner lives up to its promise of being the perfect thing to “refresh and revive hair between washes,” though.5
Which, as Grigore explains, is really all you need it for. “Some people use apple cider vinegar every day, so it is totally safe to do so—but the effects are long-lasting, so there’s no need to overdo it,” she tells me. “It’s more of a treatment than a way to get clean.” If your scalp is particularly itchy, she notes that you could do it daily for about two weeks and then take a break, but there’s no real need to trash your shampoo in favor of the vinegar.
I decide to grant the Essential Rinse precious space on my shower’s (tiny) shelf—and then commit to taking off the training wheels and trying the real thing.

Round two—a pure apple cider vinegar treatment—was more successful
Even after the fairly fantastic results that came along with the apple cider vinegar hair toner, I’m nervous to rinse my mane with one of the stinkiest things in the wellness world. But I plug my nose and mix half a cup of apple cider vinegar into a cup of warm water as I start my shower.
“Carefully transfer onto your hair, and try to avoid having the mixture run down your face—it’s a strong dilution, so it may burn a little,” is the advice Grigore gives. (Yes, I’m mildly terrified.) “Then massage it into your scalp, let it sit for five to ten minutes, and rinse.”
I plug my nose and mix half a cup of apple cider vinegar into a cup of warm water as I start my shower.
That’s easier said than done. As I slowly pour the liquid over my head, aiming for the back and away from my eyes, it trickles down my temples. (I wish I’d found this genius hack of using a spray bottle to apply before I took the plunge.) Luckily it doesn’t burn, so I count it as my a.m. toner treatment and carry on. Once again, it’s a struggle to get all of my hair covered. And when I rinse out the concoction, I notice that my strands don’t feel very soft—there’s certainly no way I can run a brush through them. (Worst of all? My bathroom reeks of apple cider vinegar.)
Which makes what comes next all the more surprising: My locks turn tamable (there’s even a healthy bounce and shine to them) as soon as they dry. The stench, however, doesn’t go away—on my way to work, I catch consistent whiffs and silently beg that it fades before I subject my poor coworkers to my funky new “perfume”.
Ultimately, my bottle of vinegar won’t be permanently shacking up in my bathroom. Instead, it’s something I’d definitely work into my routine. when I’m out of shampoo. (I just can’t get over that smell.) I’m also a bonafide lather enthusiast, and apple cider vinegar doesn’t grant me that satisfaction. For the time being, I’ll continue with my usual products—but I’ll keep drinking (diluted) shots of the wellness elixir after my morning shower.

That feeling when your friends compliment your shiny and glossy hair is beyond words. Isn’t it? But do you find it hard to maintain that shine and smoothness of your tresses? We understand, it certainly can’t be achieved in a day.
Even the gloss and shine that your favorite celebrity sports on her Instagram, takes a solid hair care regimen to achieve. So if you’re looking to sport shiny hair permanently, look no further. Here’s your mini guide.
1. What Is Shiny Hair?
When the hair cuticle lays flat, your hair strands repel water. This property of hair is called low porosity . When light shines on this kind of hair, it is easily reflected. The result being, shiny hair.
2. How To Get Shiny Hair?
A. Hair Oils
Oils provide moisture to the hair and prevent it from getting dry, damaged and brittle. Apply coconut oil , olive oil or castor oil overnight and wash off the next day. Your hair will thank you later.
You can also try the hot oil treatment like heating coconut oil and mixing with curry leaves. Apply this mixture on your hair, let it sit for 30 minutes and rinse with a mild shampoo. You can spray argan oil on your hair to tame those flyaways and have shiny hair.
B. Hair Masks
Eggs are abundant in protein , no matter how much you hate the smell. The yolk part of the egg helps in adding moisture to your hair, while the proteins strengthen it. Egg mask is something that our beauty editors swear by. So how do you do it?
- Beat one or two eggs in a bowl depending on your hair length.
- Wet your hair and apply the egg. Use a wide-tooth comb to spread out the egg evenly all over your hair.
- Rinse with your regular shampoo after 15 minutes.
Love avocado as a fruit? You’ll love it more when you see its benefits for hair. The fats in avocado not only nourish your hair, but also add shine.
- Mash one avocado to make a fine paste.
- Wet your hair and spread this paste all over your hair and scalp.
- Shampoo after 15 minutes.
Honey is a humectant, meaning it can attract moisture from the air and provide it to the hair.
- Mix 3-4 tablespoons of honey with equal amounts of water.
- Wet your hair and apply this mixture on it.
- Rinse with a gentle shampoo after 15 minutes.
C. Rinse With Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple cider vinegar acts like an instant conditioner and shine booster. It not only balances your hair’s pH level, but also leaves your hair soft. Plus it is antibacterial and combats dandruff. Here’s how to use it.
- After shampooing your hair, pour a mixture of 1 tablespoon vinegar and 1 tablespoon water on your head.
- Comb your hair and let it sit for 5 minutes.
- Rinse with cold water. (skip conditioner)
Glycerin is a common ingredient in many beauty products. It is thick in consistency, clear and is odor-free. Applying glycerin to dry hair can help retain moisture and reflect shine. Look for glycerin conditioners, make a glycerin hair mask or use it as a spray.
E. Hair Serum
Invest is a serum that is formulated to add shine to your hair. Serums are made of silicones and other ingredients that defrizz hair, make them shiny and protect them from heat.
Word of caution:
Consider a serum without alcohol and save serums only for special occasions. Using a serum every single day can have a damaging effect on your hair.
F. Vitamins & Supplements
Hair care experts recommend a combination of vitamin E , biotin and iron for shiny hair. The philosophy lies in the fact that these vitamins supply ample amounts of hydrating nutrients to the hair follicles. They replenish lost moisture, prevent breakage and give shiny hair.
3. Top Tips For Shiny Hair
A. Use conditioner before shampoo
You can use hair mask or hair primer if you want to achieve shiny hair. It prepares your hair strands for shampoo and adds a double dose of hydration. Mask, Conditioner, shampoo and conditioner! Yay, you know the drill now!
B. Get regular trims
Have you been experiencing dry and lacklustre hair due to split ends? Ask your stylist to trim off the ends or simply use a comb and scissors to get rid of split ends.
4. What to Avoid To Get Shiny Hair?
A. Chemical Hair Coloring
It goes without saying that hair colors damage your hair overtime, but now is the time to flaunt those magenta, burgundy, blue and green locks. Right? Choose demi-permanent hair color. Wondering what it means? Allow us to explain. Demi-permanent hair colors are ammonia free meaning they reach under the cuticle, but do not penetrate further.
B. Heat Styling
Heat styling can mess with your hair’s cuticle, making your hair dry and frizzy. It is difficult to cut down on heat styling tools like flat iron, curler and blow dryer completely. But how about giving your hair rest once or twice a week by air drying your hair and styling it naturally?
C. Protect From Sun, Cold And Pollution
Sun damages your hair in ways that you can’t imagine. Protect your hair with a cap, hat or stole while you step outdoors. Similarly extreme cold or humid conditions can cause damage to hair and sap the shine.
You may apply all the goodness to your hair. But if you are not eating right, consider your hair gone for a toss. Eating healthy and staying hydrated is the key to shiny hair. Include eggs, poultry, fish, green leafy vegetables, nuts and legumes in your diet.
For hydration, drink at least 3 litres of water everyday, water-rich fruits like melons, berries, apples and drink herbal teas. Whether you have curly hair, wavy hair or straight hair, you can always add shine to them using all the above tips.
While women with straight hair think about how to make it wavier, women with curly hair are dreaming about making it silky straight. Many styling devices can harm the hair structure, and you can't always be sure about the effect of chemical hair straightening procedures.
Bright Side gathered several natural ways to make hair straight, and we want to share them with all the women who have curly hair.
Proper styling begins in the shower.
- It's not a joke. You won't create a good hairdo without a good shampoo and conditioner. In this case, make sure you choose products that contain keratin, which is well known for good straightening properties.
- After washing your hair, use a towel made of a highly absorbent material. For example, an antibacterial bamboo bathroom towel.
- Very gently, dry your hair with a towel to avoid hair damage and fuzziness. Carefully rub it with a towel along the length to remove excess moisture.
Choose the right type of comb.
- Don't use round brushes because they're made to curl the hair, especially at the ends.
- To brush your hair properly, use a wide tooth comb – it's great for untangling your hair. You can even use it in the shower to apply conditioner to every inch of your locks.
You can make your hair straight by combing it.
- Let your hair dry naturally after the shower, but don't forget to comb it every 5 minutes. Part your hair in several sections, and slightly pull each section so that your hair remains in a straight form. You can use a hair dryer as well but only on the cool setting.
A ponytail can help you conquer stubborn curly hair.
- After a proper washing, wait until your hair is at least 70% dry and make a low tight ponytail. If you have bangs or hair that falls out of a ponytail, fix it with hairpins. Comb the ponytail to make sure there are no tangles.
- Use several hair ties to fix your hair every 5-7 cm (the number of hair ties depends on the length of your hair). Cover your head with a silk scarf, and wait until your hair is dry. Pull off the scarf, and remove all the hair ties. Comb your hair. There you go!
Or you can use a secret from Latin American women.
- In Latin America, women have their own secret to straight hair: the technique is called "La toca." To style curly hair, women from tropical countries wash their hair, blow-dry it on the cool setting, and wrap their mostly dry hair around their head, fixing it with hairpins. The next morning they wake up with straight shiny hair.
Learn more about cosmetic straightening:
- Straightening creams and serums
They should be applied along the length of the hair and left to dry. These products protect from UV rays and damaging and overheating of the hair structure. The only drawback is they can't be used with a hair dye because it blocks the cream from getting into the hair's core. Thus, the effect of use won't be noticeable.
- Straightening sprays and smoothing oils
They can be applied to both wet and dry hair. Despite the convenience of using sprays, they have an unpleasant disadvantage: most of them contain silicone and other harmful ingredients that pile up in the hair and damage it from the inside. On the other hand, oils work well for both hair straightening and heat protection.
Using hair masks on a regular basis will make your hair look silky and smooth. Hair masks are made to nourish and moisturize your hair as well as work on its internal structure. When hair is healthy from the inside, it looks gorgeous in any style.

Debunking the Gray Myth
Interestingly enough, there is really no such thing as natural gray hair. If we pull out any individual gray hair and examine it, the hair is actually white. It lacks all pigment. When the follicles of our hair begin to produce less pigment, the result is what we see as gray hair. Gray hair is essentially an optical illusion created by white (unpigmented) hairs sitting next to hairs that still have pigment in them. This is why someone can appear more gray haired earlier in life and white haired later. The less remaining pigmented hairs we have left, the whiter our hair will look.
I often describe white or gray hair like a crisp white shirt that never quite stays crisp and white. Normal washing in water, air pollution, literally everything seems to show up on the shirt causing it to become more dingy and yellowed over time. Gray hair is like this.
Use a Clarifying Shampoo
To keep the gray hair more bright and shiny, I suggest switching your favorite hair cleanser for a clarifying shampoo like Living Proof Triple Detox Shampoo once a week. This will remove impurities and surface build up from your gray hair which will result in a nicer tone. Follow the clarifying shampoo with a violet based shampoo and/or conditioner like Sachajuan’s Silver Shampoo. The violet will counteract any dull, yellow hues in your white hair.
Add a Serum and Follow These Steps
Shiny hair happens when light reflects off of it. Light can reflect off of dark more easily than it can off of light. When the hair becomes more gray or white, we can use styling tools and products to help seal the cuticle of the hair down, allowing eye catching light to bounce off of the hair.
For extra shine in your gray hair, try a clear serum such as Restore & Repair Oil from Number 4. On gray hair, always use a clear, colorless oil or serum over one that is amber-colored. This will give shine without affecting the tone of your gray.
- Apply a light amount of the serum to your damp hair along with your usual thermal protection spray. (I like Phytokeratine Heat-Protecting Repair Spray from Phytologie)
- Then dry and style your hair to your liking. If your hair is not naturally smooth in texture, hot tools like Dyson Supersonic Hair Dyer and Dyson Airwrap Styler will make your home hairstyling MUCH easier.
- Once your hair is dry, add a touch more of the oil to the edges of your hair for a polished finish.
Taming Textured Grays
Since pigmentation softens hair, when our hair becomes gray, it can often feel more coarse or wiry than the textures we are accustomed to. I sometimes recommend mild keratin treatments to my silver-haired clients who struggle with rebellious texture in their hair. These treatments can last 3-4 months and will soften the coarseness significantly while adding beautiful shine to the gray. Best of all, the efforts spent on softening/smoothing the hair at home will be greatly diminished.
Best Hairsprays, If You Must
Most hairsprays are quite dry which can give a matte finish to the hair. If you love the styling performance of your hairspray, but want a healthier looking effect, I’d suggest lifting your hair up in sections and applying the spray to the hair that’s near the scalp. Keeping the spray underneath the more visible top section of hair provides the hold and support to your style without dulling out its sheen. I love all of the R+Co hairsprays. R+Co Outer Space Hairspray is a bit more flexible while R+Co Vicious Strong Hold Hairspray is what its name suggests, but still workable. Even though these are dry sprays, they leave your hair texture looking healthy.
Avoid Granny Gray
A cool way that I like to prevent what I call “granny gray” on someone who embraces their grays is by mixing a few platinum colored pieces into their hair. Adding these intentional white bits brightens the tone of the silver hair slightly and makes granny gray look more like a chic Miranda Priestly vibe.
When strands start to lose their luster, use an apple cider vinegar mask to enhance glossiness. Ingredients: Equal parts raw organic honey with apple cider vinegar and coconut oil. Directions: Apply the blend to damp hair and leave on for at least 20 minutes, then shampoo out.

Apple Cider Vinegar
