All that toting it around from project to project makes it subject to lots of grime, too! When it comes the day you simply can’t stand the sight of your beloved toolbox anymore, then it’s time to get down to business with a deep clean and organizational overhaul. That way, your tools stay in prime condition and time wasted digging around the toolbox is better spent tackling your next DIY project.

First thing’s first: scrub down that toolbox! It provides you with all the items you need to make and fix a variety of things, but it can get dusty if left unused or untouched over time. And if your tools’ home isn’t kept in good shape, their condition may wear down. Here’s how to clean a toolbox to keep your tools and their box in tip-top shape.

Tools and Materials Needed

  • Towel
  • Clean cloths
  • All-purpose cleaner
  • White vinegar
  • Spray bottle
  • Handheld vacuum or crevice tool on regular vacuum
  • Cleaning bucket
  • Wire brush

Step 1: Empty the Toolbox

Put a clean towel on the floor. Remove all items from the toolbox and place them on the towel.

Step 2: Clean the Outside of the Toolbox

Spray an all-purpose cleaner over the exterior of the toolbox. Wipe with a clean cloth. If the toolbox is made of stainless steel and you notice it’s oxidizing (it will appear hazy or brown), add 1/2 cup of white vinegar to a spray bottle and spray the vinegar on the affected areas. Allow the vinegar to sit for a few minutes, then rub the vinegar in with a cloth.

Step 3: Clean the Inside of the Toolbox

Use a handheld vacuum or a crevice tool attachment on your larger vacuum to suck up dirt from the inside of the toolbox. Dilute white vinegar in a spray bottle with water (three parts water and one part vinegar), and spray the inside of the toolbox. If there are any stains, you can dab white vinegar directly to the spots and scrub with a cloth after letting the vinegar sit for a few minutes. Wipe the interior dry with a clean cloth.

Step 4: Toss Out Old Tools

Throw away any rusted screws, bent nails, and items you no longer plan to use.

Step 5: Clean the Tools

Fill a bucket with hot water and a small amount of all-purpose cleaner. Place the tools in the bucket for a few minutes. Then, use a wire brush to scrub down the tools. Rinse them under warm water and then dry them with a clean cloth.

Step 6: Group Like Items

Place tools back on a clean towel, grouping like items. For example, place accessories like bits and sockets together or miscellaneous supplies like sandpaper and duct tape together. How you group is really up to you and what makes sense for your tool supply.

Have you ever been frustrated that your tool chest is a mess? I know how it feels. I was constantly having to search for tools, and then would have to clean up the chest afterward.

A lot of times, there were even missing tools which made me more irritated than before. But no more! With this blog post, you too can learn how to organize your tool chest in 9 easy steps!

1. Identify the Tools You Need to Organize

The first step in organizing your tool chest is to identify the tools you already have and group them according to what they are used for: cutting, measuring, etc.

If this seems like a lot of work, don’t worry – it’s only temporary! Once everything has been organized by type (like saws or hammers), you can put them in their appropriate places.

2. Find Missing Tools

The second step is to identify all the tools that are missing! You may be surprised by how many there might be, and it’ll make your organizing process a lot easier if you fill those gaps now rather than later. While this will require some work from your part, it’s worth spending those extra moments to save time later on.

3. Find Appropriate Places for Tools

The third step is to put your tools in their appropriate places! If you have a lot of space, this will be easy and all the different parts of your tool chest can share that space equally.

But if you’re like most people with limited storage, then it’ll require some planning: Do I want my saw blades or hammer in the same storage space or do I separate them? Do I want to store my work gloves in the same compartment as my screwdrivers or do I keep them in their own space? Ask these questions to yourself and go with the way that seems reasonable to you.

When planning the space for specific tools make sure to think about weight and size with their use cases. You won’t want to have your gloves sitting with a saw blade.

4. Use drawer liners to keep things in place

Drawer liners will help you prevent tools from moving when you open and close the drawers. They help protect the chest from scratches, too. You also don’t want tool handles poking out into other drawers.

Some drawer liners come with a built-in tool tray. If you don’t want this, then use empty egg cartons to create your own compartmentalized area.

Drawer organizers are also great if you have too many tools in your chest and need more organization options. You can get these at any home improvement store or online shop.

5. Keep your tools in one area and have a designated space for them

Having designated space for each tool will help you find what you need quickly and easily.

Keep the tools that are used most often in a convenient spot, like the top of your chest. If they are not heavy or bulky, just pile them on top of each other so you can grab whichever one is needed without digging through all the drawers. This also helps to keep everything organized.

Another trick you can apply is to mark the spots with different colors so you can tell which spot is for what kind of tool.
If your chest has a pull-out tray, take the top tools and put them in that area so it will be easier to grab whatever you need quickly when needed.

The heavy or bulky ones should go on the bottom drawer because they are harder to reach from above.

Longer tools like screwdrivers and wrenches can be stored in foam organizers, which are inexpensive and come in a variety of sizes to suit your needs. They’re also easy to clean since you just wipe them down when they get dirty or dusty.

If you want to save some bucks, you can simply buy foam sheets at the hardware store and customize your own organizer from scratch.

The upside of this approach is that you can design it to fit any size or shape, but the downside is that you’ll have a lot more work on your hands if you want it to look really nice and neat.

7. Remove unnecessary tools from eyesight

Step aside some unused tools and make room for the new ones. All other tools should be organized according to their size, shape, weight, and use cases: long or big in one place; light and small things in another drawer.

You may have some broken tools that you don’t want to throw away. Keep them in a neutral place, not too close to the working area but still visible so that if one day you need it, you’ll find it quickly.

Tools are usually very expensive and there is no point in buying new ones just because you are not organizing them perfectly. So, start organizing before you lose some important tools.

STEP 1: Take stock of your tool collection.

If you’ve been building a tool collection for a while, you may have lost track of exactly which tools you own. The first step is to take a visual inventory. Find somewhere all of your tools can be laid out and arranged into groups. Think about which tools are frequently used together and check for duplicates.

Tools that aren’t needed can be donated to charity, and those that are beyond repair probably have parts that can be recycled—don’t let them go to waste in the trash.

How to organize a toolbox

A tool chest, tool box, or tool cart is a personal sort of domain, and everyone has a different idea of the perfect layout for their tools. On the other hand, a little consideration for the tools involved will help you decide where they should be located in the hierarchy of tools.

Rather than provide you with a blueprint for your own tools, we put together some tips and suggestions to make your tools easier to use as you need them.

Sorting Tool Types

If you have tools that come in more than one specific type, such as SAE and metric tools, keep them in separate drawers to avoid confusion.

If you have the space available, sorting drive and socket sizes will also save you time in the long run, as you will know exactly where to go for any specific size and drive of socket.

Sorting tool types is also helpful with different screwdriver sizes, allowing you to put slotted, Phillips, and screwlock drivers in their own locations. Where space is available, break up your tools accordingly, including separating punches from chisels and other fine distinctions.

Top to Bottom

Upper Drawers

Keeping your sockets in the upper drawers makes them easier to get to, read the markings, etc. A good socket organizer is a must have. Depending on the drawer height, you can go with a couple different options.

Middle Drawers

The middle drawers can be used for screwdrivers, wrenches, specialty tools, chisels, etc., or they can be put to whatever specific purposes you may have.

A well-cushioned drawer liner for at least these drawers makes a huge different. Tools stay where they’re supposed to and both them and the metal drawer bottoms stay protected.

Plastic drawer ogranizers also work well here. One of my favorites is the 6-compartment tray from Harbor Freight. Cheap and versatile. I think I have about a dozen of them total in my tool chests. You can never have too many drawer organizers.

Lower Drawers

For obvious reasons, your heavier tools should be located in the lower drawers of the tool chest. This provides more stability for the chest, and has the added benefit of keeping heavy tools near ground level for chests that are portable.

Similarly, power tools require more space for storage, and the lower drawers may be the only storage option if you keep a drill, jigsaw, portable bandsaw, or other larger tools in your tool chest.

By contrast, some craftsmen say that the best layout is to have the most commonly used tools in the center drawers. While this may make sense for some, it has a tendency to clutter those drawers as tools migrate from the other drawers to, effectively, center stage.

Unless your tool box has a lot of extra room, this method may not work out.

Easy Access with Pegboard

If you use specific tools often, save yourself time and hang them from pegboard or other hooks. This will not work if you have a mobile tool chest, but it would be an excellent way to keep commonly used tools at hand in your garage or workshop.

Because of the way many wrench sets are manufactured, the boxed ends are a perfect way to hang – and sort – your wrenches.

Do It Your Way

In the end, you should organize your tool chest to fit you and your usage, the same as a professional would setup their tool belt. Keep commonly used tools close at hand and store rarely used ones in the most out of the way places.

Sort tools by use, color, manufacturer, or age. As long as they are in a spot where you can find them when you need them.

Labeling your drawers is another option for the OCD crowd and looks great. The only rule is to make sure the heaviest items are near the bottom of the chest.

You can find a million different chest owners to give you a million different views of the best tool layout, but the only which which truly matters is going to be your own.

Above all, spend some time to plan your setup. There’s nothing worse that constantly having to change the location of tools.

If you have tools that come in more than one specific type, such as SAE and metric tools, keep them in separate drawers to avoid confusion.

If you have the space available, sorting drive and socket sizes will also save you time in the long run, as you will know exactly where to go for any specific size and drive of socket.

Sorting tool types is also helpful with different screwdriver sizes, allowing you to put slotted, Phillips, and screwlock drivers in their own locations. Where space is available, break up your tools accordingly, including separating punches from chisels and other fine distinctions.

Top to Bottom

Upper Drawers

Keeping your sockets in the upper drawers makes them easier to get to, read the markings, etc. A good socket organizer is a must have. Depending on the drawer height, you can go with a couple different options.

Middle Drawers

The middle drawers can be used for screwdrivers, wrenches, specialty tools, chisels, etc., or they can be put to whatever specific purposes you may have.

A well-cushioned drawer liner for at least these drawers makes a huge different. Tools stay where they’re supposed to and both them and the metal drawer bottoms stay protected.

Plastic drawer ogranizers also work well here. One of my favorites is the 6-compartment tray from Harbor Freight. Cheap and versatile. I think I have about a dozen of them total in my tool chests. You can never have too many drawer organizers.

Lower Drawers

For obvious reasons, your heavier tools should be located in the lower drawers of the tool chest. This provides more stability for the chest, and has the added benefit of keeping heavy tools near ground level for chests that are portable.

Similarly, power tools require more space for storage, and the lower drawers may be the only storage option if you keep a drill, jigsaw, portable bandsaw, or other larger tools in your tool chest.

By contrast, some craftsmen say that the best layout is to have the most commonly used tools in the center drawers. While this may make sense for some, it has a tendency to clutter those drawers as tools migrate from the other drawers to, effectively, center stage.

Unless your tool box has a lot of extra room, this method may not work out.

Easy Access with Pegboard

If you use specific tools often, save yourself time and hang them from pegboard or other hooks. This will not work if you have a mobile tool chest, but it would be an excellent way to keep commonly used tools at hand in your garage or workshop.

Because of the way many wrench sets are manufactured, the boxed ends are a perfect way to hang – and sort – your wrenches.

Do It Your Way

In the end, you should organize your tool chest to fit you and your usage, the same as a professional would setup their tool belt. Keep commonly used tools close at hand and store rarely used ones in the most out of the way places.

Sort tools by use, color, manufacturer, or age. As long as they are in a spot where you can find them when you need them.

Labeling your drawers is another option for the OCD crowd and looks great. The only rule is to make sure the heaviest items are near the bottom of the chest.

The place can be a bit overwhelming with aisles and aisles of home decor items, but if you go in there looking for a specific thing you’re less likely to get sucked into the black hole 🙂 I’ve had great luck finding the exact same items that The Container Store carries so now I go to Garden Ridge first before anywhere else, and that’s where I found this large, mini drawer compartment organizer!

Here are some tips on organizing your tools in the garage:

  1. Maximize space. First and foremost, if you want your tools and garage to be organized, you must prioritize creating space. Forget about having an organization in your life if you live in a small room. Most of the following tips will be more about creating space, so be ready.
  2. Get pegboards. This is a must-have for a messy garage and a boatload of tools. All you need to do is stick them to the wall, put some pegs in, and then hang up your tools. Even if you don’t organize or arrange your tools, having them on the pegboard makes it so much easier to find the tool that you need as soon as possible.
  3. Outline your tools on pegboards. If you choose to get the pegboards, you can make the tools you place there more organized by drawing outlines. Place the tool where it’s supposed to be. Get a marker, and draw around the edges of the tool. This way, you will always know where tools are supposed to go and which ones are missing.
  4. Install screws on boards or walls. A good and inexpensive alternative to pegboards is using screws. You can just plant two or three of them on the wall, and you can use them as a makeshift hook for some of your equipment: hammer, wrenches, pliers, etcetera.
  5. Use wire shelves. They are lightweight, cheap, and easy to install. Aside from that, you can easily see the items that are placed on them. Get wire shelves and mount them on your boards or walls, or you can just use some rope and hang them from the ceiling. You can place your power tools on them.
  6. Convert a storage chest into a workbench. The good thing about storage chests is that they are sturdy, solid, and can store items. And if you don’t have a workbench yet, it is best that you convert one or two of your storage chests into workbenches. Little modifications are needed and you will be efficiently using the space in your garage that way. And to help you become even more organized, label the storage chest — list down all the tools it holds and pastes that list on one side of the chest so you can tell at a glance which tools are in there.
  7. Get a used and cheap locker. If you browse around CraigsList, Etsy, or eBay, you will find at least two or three lockers for sale. They are excellent storage locations for your tools and all you need to do is place them in your garage. And as with storage chests, make it a point to “inventorize” the tools inside the locker for easy, hassle-free access.
  8. Store items vertically if possible. It is common for people to neglect vertical space. When your garage or room is already cramped, look up. If there is still space between you and the ceiling, that means the room isn’t full yet and you can take advantage of that space for storage.
  9. Use a slat wall. This is a nice and good looking alternative to pegboards. A number of tools you can hang on it depends on how big or narrow the gaps are between the pieces of wood or plastic.
  10. Recycle jars, bottles, and plastic containers. If you’ve already used up all your coffee, don’t throw away its container. You can still repurpose it in your garage. These bottles and canisters can be a nice place to store screws, nails, bolts, and nuts.
  11. Acquire some old pallet. Pallets have become one of the most used and sought-after DIY materials. And it doesn’t hurt to use one as a tool container or holder in your garage. Just like with the pegboard, pallets can be just placed on the wall. You can place your big tools on the pallet, especially your garden tools.
  12. Make a storage tower. If your garage still has an empty corner, then it is best that you make a storage tower, and place it in that empty place. Make sure to build the tower as high as possible to maximize vertical space.

This way you can immediately see whether you are working realistically. You systematically adjust the provisional budget when you receive offers or when you can make a more targeted estimate.

Event technology

The role of the technique is becoming increasingly important, but it can differ greatly from event to event. Sometimes the technical feats literally steal the show. At other events, audiovisual concepts are used to support presentations or performances. In any case, choose a reliable supplier for renting audiovisual material.

Photo and video

Don’t forget to hire a photographer and/or cameraman. You can send them out to capture beautiful images of important moments, acts and audience.

Permits and insurance

Permits and event insurance are especially important to you as an organizer. If you are fine with everything, you can save a lot of headaches and save a financial hangover.

I have been working on the “Creative Wall” in my craft room… aka… my Studioffice.

I am creating 3 frames and filling them with rolls of gift wrap, tools and a mini photo studio.

This wall side of the room in general is where I create – hence the name I have given the room as it is more than just a craft room or home office – it is a creative studio + office = Studioffice.

The tool frame is the most utilitarian aspect of the room, but without it – the room would not function and without the function the design of the room would be a failure.

Before making this tool frame, I kept the tools I used daily in cache pots I made that I kept on the worktable. These looked very pretty, but whenever I began to make something– they were in the way and I had to move them – not functional.

The tools on the wall keeps my worktable clutter free while the tools are still easily accessible.

This is what I love about design and decorating – customizing for the way I live and work in a space – the process is the same for every room.

If you read in your living room, do you have the right type of task lighting to make reading easy or is there only one ceiling light that makes it hard to read? Is there a place to curl your feet up and a side table to place your drink?

When I look at a room – these are the first things I consider-

What is this room’s main purpose? What items will make that purpose happen? What needs to be added? What is not needed?

Editing. It makes me happy and enables me to create a home that meshes perfectly with how my family and I live, not some arbitrary source that says a room should look or be a certain way.

How to Make a Craft Room Wall Tool Organizer

supplies needed:

  • Frame
  • Pegboard
  • Pegboard Organizer Kit
  • Staple gun
  • 1/2-inch staples
  • Saw tooth hanger and wall hanging nail and hook
  • White gloss spray paint
  • Tin cans
  • Ribbon
  • Awl
  • Hot glue and glue gun

The last wall frame is where I will set up to take photos of the items I make. I will show you it in my next post.

To see how I made the frame, you can click over to this post – Putting the Creative Wall Together. I bought the pegboard at Lowes. It comes in white, but only very big sheets of it.

I only needed a small section, so I opted for this $6 brown piece and spray painted it white.

Once the paint was dry – I stapled it to the back of the frame using 1/2 – inch heavy duty staples. You could also nail it on with small nails

I added two saw tooth hangers to the back of the frame – one on each side, then hung it on the wall. Since the frames are butted up against each other, use a level to make sure you are placing the picture hanger on the wall in the right spot.

If you have trouble doing this – here is a picture hanging trick that may help you figure out exactly where the nail and hook should go on the wall.

I bought this pegboard organizing kit at Lowes for $12. I didn’t use all of the items. The blue plastic just didn’t do it for me.

They would be fine if this was in my basement, but in this room, I decided to use tin cans covered with ribbon to hold some of the smaller items I use daily. I used an awl to punch a hole into the top edge of each can and hung them on hooks that came in the kit.

TIP: Details count!

I wanted to change the blue tips that were on some of the hooks, so I went into my daughters’ stash of nail polish. I picked pink and green. I dipped each blue tip on the hooks into the nail polish and let it dry. Now I have colors that coordinate with the room. Easy!

I used nail polish instead of craft paint since it is shiny and has an enamel finish.

Form does not come first for me, function does. What good is a pretty item, piece of furniture, or room if it is uncomfortable or serves no purpose in your life?

It may look good, but if you never sit in it -what good is it? If it makes you smile then it serves a purpose 🙂 the best kind of purpose! If it doesn’t then I would probably edit it – out of my life.

How to Efficiently Pack and Move Your Workshop Tools

1. Organize & Purge

Moving to a new location is a great time to take inventory of your tool collection. As you sort through all your workshop or garage items, separate the items into four piles:

  1. Large tools you want to take
  2. Large tools to give away or toss
  3. Small items you to take
  4. Small items to toss

Creating these piles make it easier to know what type and how much packing supplies you’ll need. Plus, if you’re planning on giving away or selling your items, it allows you to see what you have available.

If your garage or workshop is a cluttered mess and there’s no room for any piles of goods, use your driveway or tarp on grass to start your piles. If you create your separate piles outside of your garage or workshop, you open up space in the garage to set the packed and boxed items that are ready for the move. It’s also easier to sweep and clean the space when tools aren’t crowding the floor.

2. Clean & Inspect

Before packing your tools, wipe them down and clean dirt and gunk from the surfaces. This way, you’ll have clean tools when you arrive at your new location! Keep in mind that stored tools are havens for spiders! Wear gloves before reaching into dark corners of your workshop or garage. Use damp rags, towels and cleaning agents to remove the following debris:

  • Dust, dried mud and dirt
  • Pollen
  • Sawdust
  • Grass clippings
  • Lubricant and oil spills
  • Cobwebs and spider eggs

3. Remove Fuel & Oil

Properly drain gasoline and fuels from your tools. Most moving companies will not allow you to move tools that are full of flammable fuels because gasoline can leak out of tools when the vibration of the moving van loosens their fuel caps.

Not only is leaking fuel a fire hazard, but the gasoline can drip or pool on other expensive household goods. Fuels can soak and stain boxes… and your goods end up smelling like gasoline.

How to Properly Remove Fuel & Oil from Your Tools

Never dump gas, oil or lubricants in your yard or down your drains. Take spent fuel and lubricants to an approved disposal site like an auto-service garage or local recycling facility.

4. Remove Blades & Bits

Take blades out of circular saws, table saws and other motorized saws. Otherwise, mounted blades can become warped or damaged during the move. Additionally, follow these tips to keep your tools safe:

  • Use rubber guards around saw teeth so they don’t puncture moving boxes
  • Pack saw blades upright when possible and allow plenty of cushioning between the blades
  • Remove drill bits from drills, impact wrenches and drivers
  • Pack bits separately from fasteners like nails and screws so they’re easier to locate in your new workshop or garage
  • Use pierce-proof containers to hold drill bits and fasteners inside your moving boxes

5. Support Larger Tools & Gear

Heavy tools need extra support to stay undamaged during the drive to your new location. Cushion the corners and all protruding parts with thick packing foam or bubble wrap.

If you plan to move your rolling tool chests, remove the tools to make the chests lighter. Don’t use tape to secure the doors—instead, wrap tool cabinets and chests with moving blankets. Use rope or tie-downs to secure the blankets around the large tool cases.

Whenever possible, break down your larger workshop tools into smaller parts. Take photos before disassembling the tools to make reassembling the tools easier. Protect your large tools with the following steps:

  • Use boxes reinforced with plywood
  • Wrap motor shafts and mounts
  • Coil cords and tape to tools
  • Avoid using lightweight Styrofoam to pack sharp-edged tools

6. Research & Plan

If You’re Moving by Plane:

If you’re flying to your new home, you may be able to take some tools along. Tools generally aren’t allowed with your carry-on bags but must be packed with your luggage. Check with TSA to find out which of your tools is approved for airplane transport.

If You’re Moving by Car:

When driving to your new home, pack your necessary tools in a designated move-in toolbox.

Hand tools are valuable during move-in to unscrew light fixtures, hang pictures, mount drapery rods and perform other tasks. Plan ahead so you have the tools you need when you get to your new home. Tools you might want for your move include:

  • Hammer
  • Pliers
  • Screwdriver
  • Level
  • Scraper
  • Stud Finder

Expand the tool category to which you want to add a tool. For this example, we’ll select Edit PDF.

Select a tool from the list. For this example, we’ll select the Add Text tool. Then click the Add to Toolbar icon on the right side of the dialog box to add the tool to your custom toolbar.

Reorder your tools

You can use the left and right arrows at the top of the dialog box to reorder your tools. Highlight a tool, then click an arrow to move it. Use the trash can icon to remove buttons from the toolbar. You can also add a divider to your toolbar by clicking that icon and then moving it to the desired location in your toolbar.

Click Save to finalize your new toolbar preferences. Your custom tools will now appear in the Quick Tools toolbar.
