Renting a car can put a huge dent in your wallet, especially if you plan on holding onto the vehicle for more than a couple of days. If you’re organizing a lengthy holiday or need a car for a two-month-long business trip, forget about booking the first rental car you find. Take time to do some market research and then book your rental car knowing you got the best deal possible.

Visit Third-Party Travel Sites

Look into long-term car rentals through travel websites that regularly offer deeply discounted prices. Some rental companies boast of offering the cheapest prices for everything from airfares to car rentals, so conduct a search on a number of third-party websites for the best two-month deal possible. Also try online travel bidding sites. There, customers can name their own price for a car rental and often can receive up to a 40 percent discount.

Become a Loyal Customer

Some of the major car rental companies send out email promotions to customers who sign up for club membership, where new promotions are offered every month. If you sign up for membership, you might also be able to skip the lines and all the paperwork when renting a car. Other companies offer rewards to its frequent renters. If you’ve rented with one company before, you can save from 10 to 20 percent on future rentals in the same year by booking online. When renting a vehicle for two months, this can add up to a nice chunk of change.

Search for Coupons and Promo Codes

Search online for car rental coupons and promotion codes for discounts. Also look for coupons in car magazines and entertainment guides. It’s also worth visiting the social networking pages of the major car rental companies to see if they’re offering monthly promotions — post questions about two-month discounts while on these sites.

Use Your Frequent Flier Miles

If you’re earning air miles with an airline, you can apply those well-earned frequent flier points to booking a rental car for two months. Airlines offer their loyal customers air miles that can not only be redeemed for future flights, but for car rentals. You might not get the miles to pay for the entire reservation, but if you’ve racked up enough points, it will definitely make a big difference.

Visit the Car Rental Company

If you’ve searched high and low and still can’t find a good deal on a two-month car rental, speak to an agent or manager at your local car rental company. Simply explain what type of vehicle you’re seeking, as well as the two-month time frame, and see if the company can give you a better deal.

  • How to rent a sports car

Renting a car is expensive, yes. But often times necessary. When I think about the convenience of being able to move at my own pace and go wherever I want, the cost is much more digestible.

In some areas, it’s absurd to rent a car, for instance in New York City or Paris, because their public transportation system is excellent while traffic is chaotic.

But if you’re going to Orlando, or want to direct your independent cultural travel for a month through Italy or Spain, a car is your best choice!

Renting a car may be an art form

You’d think things were simpler when it comes to travel, and to the “spontaneous” traveler, they may very well be.

But for us geeky organized tourists, there are seven steps to avoid being overcharged for things we don’t need or we may get a fantastic deal for the same price.

So here’s my simple methodology to rent a car:

Step 1: Decide on your travel plans

Shopping for a rental car is best when you have already purchased your airline tickets because you can then coordinate pickup and drop-off times accordingly.

Though sometimes picking up a car outside of the airport may offer a discount, in my experience the cost of time and loss of convenience is not worth it.

Once you know specific dates and hours of your plane (or train) tickets, go ahead and start shopping for you rental car.

And the earlier you start shopping and make that reservation, the better prices you’ll get.

How to rent a sports car

Step 2: Compare prices online

I like to use very well known worldwide companies like Hertz or Avis. I tend to buy from the same brands because I know them and know what to expect from them.

I read that europcar.co.uk is a good resource if you’re going to Europe.

However, do your homework and compare thoroughly. Beware of hidden fees and take into consideration things like:

  • GPS navigation system (the cheaper cars don’t come with GPS).
  • Child car-seats.
  • Insurance.
  • Different drop-off location.
  • Upgrades.
  • Returning the car before the booked return date.

… because all of these will increase the price.

Often the best deal is to book weekly, because this will grant you a smaller weekly rate than booking based on days.

Usually the seventh day of the week is free!

Also, compounding discounts from airline frequent-flier plans or hotel plan can sometimes give you a great deal!

Step 3: Credit card insurance coverage

Credit cards like Visa and MasterCard offer travel insurance that sometimes covers car rentals.

Make sure you confirm with them the coverage of those policies abroad. You may be able to save on insurance at the counter.

Having said that, I would much rather pay for every insurance policy they offer. An accident can happen to anybody and I’d rather be covered.

How to rent a sports car

Step 4: Brace yourself; there will still be hidden fees

I may be doing something wrong, but in my experience, not all fees are disclosed online. They will either include some insurance that you hadn’t thought of and taxes.

In any case, these unexpected fees can go up to twice the price you’d anticipated to pay.

I’ve heard of people having to pay an additional “cleaning” charge at drop-off. And do fill up the tank before returning the car, so that they don’t charge you extra from their pump.

If you’re on a long trip, prepay for the tank and return it empty.

Step 5: Research

Learn about traffic regulations and traffic in general at your country of destination.

Maybe you need to be prepared to drive on the other side of the road, or take a crash course on driving with a mechanic transmission.

Or perhaps you’re going to India or Cambodia, where the traffic is chaotic and hectic (to say the least) and traffic signs or traffic lights are not respected whatsoever (in some areas).

Learn about this in advance.

Also, in most countries your own country’s driver’s license will be valid to rent a car (not drive any car, like a friend’s for example), provided it hasn’t expired. Research first.

If not, you can get an International Driver’s License or International Driving Permit at home.

Step 6: You’re not done shopping until…

You drive out of the parking lot with the car. Once at the counter ask for any upgrade specials or discounts.

Also, you can play a little bit and haggle (this has been my experience) when all those unexpected fees show up.

Whenever I have not agreed with them and showed them my printed online reservation (granted, they won’t take down the price) you can get some really good upgrades!

Step 7: Check your car before leaving the parking lot

It once happened to me that when I was getting into the car, I noticed that the license plate was about to fall off.

I told the clerk about this, and he not only apologized for having a damaged car, but gave me an instant upgrade from a regular sedan, to a fabulous SUV!

How about sharing your comments in the field below!

What is the best car rental company? According to a survey by Condé Nast Traveler: Hertz, Enterprise, and Avis top the list. The results, which take into account rates, reliability, locations, and vehicle options were not overly surprising as these companies are some of the largest car rental companies. In addition, many of the agencies on the list are at the forefront of new developments in the industry. Hertz recently announced one-way rentals that will allow consumers to drop off a car at an airport instead of an original pick-up spot. This is particularly helpful for international and out-of-state travelers. Enterprise and Avis, on the other hand, are pioneering electric car rentals for the upcoming year.

It’s not just travelers who are benefiting from the innovations by the leading car rental companies. Newer companies such as Zipcar are attempting to shift urban centers from car owners and renters to car-sharing members. Their hope is that major cities around the globe will embrace their on-demand mobility model. While this is a popular method in European cities, it will be more difficult to push through in the United States where car ownership is ingrained in the culture. That said, an emphasis on being green has taken afoot in certain segments of the population.

For the companies that didn’t perform well in the survey such as Dollar and Thrifty, it would benefit them to re-evaluate their products and services as it will prevent them from being associated with the worst car rental companies.

Where to Rent: “Location, location, location is the reason we rent sports cars in L.A.,” says Dan Darvish, general manager of the Black and White rental-car company. “Our weather is great all of the time, and the public transportation here is terrible.” Enterprise exotic rentals are available in Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Nevada, and Texas—all vacation destinations where the weather allows driving all year.

But you don’t need to go someplace warm, necessarily, to rent a great car. Just be in a popular destination. Gotham Dream Cars started in New York in 2004 and opened a Florida branch in 2006. Hertz began renting Porsches in 2012 in Miami, Los Angeles, and Las Vegas.

The Cars: Here are a few exotics available to rent in this country to whet your appetite: Porsche Boxster, Porsche 911 Carrera S, Porsche 911 Turbo, Bentley Continental GTC, Ferrari 458 Spyder, Tesla Model S, Rolls-Royce Ghost, Fisker Karma, Audi R8 V-10, Lamborghini Aventador, Mercedes SLS, and McLaren MP4 12C.

“We started with five cars, including a Lamborghini LP550, but we found people wanted cars that were more comfy,” says John Temerian of Lou La Vie, which has several locations in South Florida. “Now we have a Nissan GTR, which is incredibly fast but easy to drive. And we have a new Porsche Carrera S convertible, and these cars drive normally on the street.”

How Much: You can burn through all the cash you’ve got if you really want to ride in style. A Porsche Boxster starts at $450 for a day from Lou La Vie. Just $87 will get you a Camaro or Mustang convertible from Black and White in the Los Angeles area. At Gotham Dream Cars, you can ride in a Bentley Continental GTC for a little under a grand for a weekday—though the rate jumps to $2250 for a weekend day. Got a little more cash burning a hole in your pocket? Spend $2800 to get a Ferrari 458 Spyder from Lou La Vie. Or fly to London and really go nuts: Drop $26,000 per day for a Bugatti Veyron.

“Our bank is in Indiana, and when we call them for a loan for $400,000 for a car, they are in shock,” says Dan Darvish from Black and White, which owns its own cars.

When It Started: Black and White Rental Cars owner Sam Zaman got into the business eight years ago, when people kept offering him money to borrow his personal Porsche 911. Gotham Dream Cars started around the same time. The owners tell us that exotic cars have been available for rent since they made their way to the U.S. in the 1950s as Mercedes SLs, but the big trend for “bucket list” driving experiences started around 1996 and has recently seen increasing demand. This summer, Andrew Hendricks started Driven Experiences at the Gateway Canyons resort in southwest Colorado. This agency has about 20 high-end cars, including Bentleys, Ferraris, and Porsches, and it offers direct access to Hendricks’s off-road driving course and school at the resort.

Who Rents These Things? About whom you’d expect: European vacationers, Middle Eastern and Latin American businessmen, car nuts, and bucket-list-gift receivers make up the bulk of the customers. “We see pro soccer stars, celebrities, CEOs, designers,” says Lou La Vie’s Temerian.

“We all love these cars, and they cross all boundaries,” says Dan Darvish. “Our customers in Europe and the Middle East drive these cars back home. They’re used to that caliber of car. Some are rentals for the movies.”

“Clients in Brazil, Canada, New York, Los Angeles, might already have a 458 Spyder,” Temerian says. “We had a client from the Middle East and he came back and told me that our Porsche Turbo feels slow. Then I found out he had a McLaren SLR at home.”

Budding racing drivers can also rent time on tracks in some of the cars for training and higher-speed driving without the risk of speeding tickets.

Why Do They Rent Them? Some customers have exotic cars at home, and want to drive the same car on vacation or when traveling for business. Or just for show: “In L.A. you are judged by what kind of car you drive,” Darvish says. “There are a lot of people whose business impression is important and they claim it’s their car.” Still others join the local culture: Miami is synonymous with exotic cars, beaches, exotic people, Temerian says, so well-heeled tourists want a well-made car.

What Can You Learn? The reputable companies will show you how to use the electronic shifter in a Ferrari, and teach you how to brake, how not to curb a wheel on a wider exotic. “I want to share our passion for cars with people. We’re educating them. We want to tailor the rental experience to them; it’s an educational process; we tell them why the 458 Spyder is so cool, and why the Lamborghini shifts so aggressively. We get a feel for the client—do they want a killer sound system? Things like that.”

Can Anyone Do It? Requirements are surprisingly simple, starting with a driver’s-license check to make sure there are no odd violations on record, Temerian and Darvish say. Next comes a check of your own personal auto-insurance policy to see that it’s valid and covers rental cars. Then they’ll often request a security deposit on your credit card of up to $5000 depending upon which rental company you use. (What, you think they’d put someone behind the wheel of a Bentley without it?)

“That’s for small damage,” Black and White’s Darvish says. “We’ve been very fortunate with customers taking care of our cars. We don’t make money off damage like big rental-car companies do.”

What’s Next: Frequent renter clubs. Why keep a garage full of your own exotic cars that you’ll drive only once in a great while when you could join a club that gets the hottest performance cars as soon as they come out. So far only Lou La Vie has announced a members’ club, price to be determined, but it offers different exotics and priority reservations to regular customers.
