How often do I request payment?

Everyone, regardless of the type of benefit, requests payment weekly in MyUI+.

When do I request payment

You may request payment as early as the Sunday following the week that ended, and you have 14 days to request that week.

If you do not request payment within those 14 days, your claim will close and you will have to reopen it.

Why am I not receiving the email to reset my password

Some email providers, including but not limited to Yahoo and AOL, are experiencing significant delays in delivering emails from the MyUI+ system for password resets. Unfortunately, this is an email provider issue. If you have not received an expected email message, please check your spam folder over the next few hours.

We ask that you not submit multiple requests to reset your password and wait for your email notification, unless the email was not delivered before the code expired. If you received the email after the code expired, please request a new code. Because of the delays, we increased the amount of time the code is valid.

How to Claim Unemployment Benefits in Colorado

Colorado residents hoping to claim unemployment benefits should have a basic understanding of the state’s eligibility requirements. Most of the requirements to claim unemployment benefits involve determining whether or not an applicant is willing and able to seek out full-or-part-time employment.

  • Being terminated due to repeated misconduct or going against work place rules and standards.
  • Being unable to perform work duties do to drug and/or alcohol use during work hours.
  • Theft or property damage exceeding a value of $25

In addition to the above requirements, an applicant must pass a second series of qualifications concerning their ability to work in order to be able to claim unemployment benefits. The additional unemployment eligibility requirements stipulate that the applicant:

  • Must be physically and mentally able to pursue work at the time of filing their claim.
  • Must be actively seeking out employment and keeping an adequate record of all applications submitted.
  • Must continue active involvement in any employment programs assigned to them by the state of Colorado.

If an applicant fails to meet these eligibility requirements while he or she is claiming benefits for unemployment, then he or she risks getting their benefits denied or terminated. In some cases, there are exceptions in which an applicant may still hold eligibility for federal unemployment benefits in Colorado despite not falling under the listed qualifications.

Exceptions may be considered if the applicant has to voluntarily leave their job as a direct result of sexual harassment, illegal withholding of wages, unsafe work conditions or excessive verbal, physical or mental abuse. Temporary financial assistance is offered to individuals in Colorado in for form of unemployment insurance (UI). This is only offered to unemployed people who have lost employment at no fault of their own.

These UI Benefits are entitled to individuals who meet all necessary eligibility requirements as stated in the Colorado Employment Security Act. Residents have the ability to use this online application application to begin the unemployment filing process.

Colorado Unemployment Online

State law requires all individuals unemployed who are 18 years and older to show proof that they are lawfully present in the United States before receiving certain benefits, including unemployment insurance (UI). In order to receive state compensation from Colorado, you must affirm that you are a citizen or a legal, permanent resident of the United States or otherwise legally reside in the United States in accordance with federal law. You must possess and show information regarding one of the following forms of identification (ID):

  • A official Colorado driver’s license or a official Colorado ID card.
  • A United States military ID card or a military dependent ID card.
  • A United States Coast Guard Merchant Mariner card.
  • A Native American tribal document.

BE ADVISED: Unemployed workers living outside Colorado must show information proving that they have a official driver’s license or ID card issued by another state or by Canada.

You must confirm your legal presence or citizenship in the United States by signing and returning the UIB-1 frm, Application for Unemployment Insurance Benefits. Also, please show information about your proof of ID on the same form. The form is mailed to you after you file a new benefits, file an additional benefits, or reopen an existing benefits. You must show this information only once during each application year. The form must be completed, signed, and received by the UI Program within the timeframe specified on the form or your application for state compensation will not be paid for the weeks prior to the week in which the form is received by the UI Program.

When to File Your Insurance Claim

Delaying to file a application for state compensation in a future base period could result in lower potential benefit amount, or deny your benefits.

When a claimaint begins to file their benefits, weekly and highest amount of benefits are calculated using your wages during the “base period.” The base period is the first four of the last 5 base periods complete at the time a claimaint begins to file for state compensation. A base period is simple a three month time period; there are 4 base periods in an entire year.

The base periods are January through March, April through June, July through September, and October through December. A completed base period is one quarter in which all 3 months are in the past.

Therefore, the date on which your application becomes effective may make a difference in your weekly and highest amount of benefits.

In most cases, waiting for the next base period to file an application has little or no impact on your weekly and highest amount of benefits. However, in other cases, delawying until the next base period to file for benefitscan result in significantly higher or lower weekly and highest amount of compensation. Therefore, you may want to consider these differences in choosing when to file their benefits.

CO Workforce Unemployment Considerations

  • When an applicant earns a subsantially higher salry over the previous 6 months than in previous months, weekly benefits might be higher in amounts if they wait for the next base period to file your UI claim.
  • When an applicant earns less money over the last 6 months than in previous months, your weekly benefit amount might be lower if you wait until the next base period to file your UI claim.
  • The explantion for the leaving from your any previous employers or your base-period wage amounts can impact your weekly benefit amount potential. State compensation is given only to anyone who is out of work through no fault of their own. Do I qualify for unemployment benefits?

In order to receive unemployment benefits, you must be without a job due to no fault of your own and you must be actively seeking work.

You must also have earned at least $2,500 during the standard base period. A base period is defined as the first four of the last five completed calendar quarters before your claim.

If you did not earn enough during the standard base period you may qualify using an alternative base period, defined as the last four completed calendar quarters prior to the date of application.

How do I apply for unemployment benefits?

You can file your claim by phone (1-800-388-5515) or online, but be aware that the call center and website are experiencing unprecedented numbers of inquiries.

As a result, the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment is restricting online access according to the filer’s name. To file your unemployment claim online:

  • If your name begins with the letters A through M, you can file on Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday, or after noon on Saturday.
  • If your name begins with the letters N through Z you can file on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, or before noon on Saturday.

You will need to provide personal information such as your Social Security number and address. You will also need to submit your work history for the past 18 months, including details of your employment and the reason you are no longer working.

How much money will I receive in unemployment benefits?

Colorado weekly benefits range from $25 to $561, and this Claims Benefit Estimator can help you determine how much your unemployment benefit payments might be.

Most claims are calculated by dividing the wages earned in the highest two consecutive quarters by 26 to give a weekly wage, which is then multiplied by 60%. If your wages from your highest two consecutive quarters were $12,000, your unemployment benefit would be $277 per week.

If you are approved, the money can be deposited directly into your bank account every two weeks or paid to a state prepaid debit card.

How long can I collect unemployment benefits?

A new executive order has extended the maximum duration to 39 weeks, up from 26 weeks. The order also eliminates the traditional one-week waiting period. However, the CARES Act extends the benefit period by 13 weeks, allowing you to collect unemployment benefits for up to 39 weeks.

It could take up to six weeks to process your claim, during which time you will still need to register with your local workforce center and request payment every two weeks.

What if my unemployment claim is denied?

If you are denied unemployment benefits, you can submit an appeal in writing. You have 20 calendar days from when the denial was mailed to do so. A hearing will be scheduled that you can join by phone or in person during which the decision will be reviewed.
