Puffy, baggy eyes can be caused by tiredness, allergies, dehydration or crying. Some people’s baggy eyes are even hereditary. The skin around your eyes is very thin and the blood vessels underneath the surface are very sensitive. Baggy eyes can make you look tired and much older than you actually are. While there are cosmetics that can cover up baggy eyes, there are things you can do to actually make the bags under your eyes go away.

Ice your eyes. The CNN Health website recommends a cold compress to help reduce puffy eyes. Put a cold ice pack over your eyes for about 15 to 20 minutes when you wake up. The cold reduces the swelling under your eyes; however, this is only a quick fix. Ice can only reduce the bags under your eyes for a few hours. Consistently using an ice pack can slow down the larger bags under your eyes from developing. The cold temperature will also help reduce stress and the stretching of the skin.

Make a tea compress. Green tea helps get rid of the puffiness and swelling beneath your eyes. Brew a cup of tea with two green tea bags. Take the tea bags out of the cup, let the water drip out, then chill. Apply the tea bags to your eyes while laying down for at least 20 minutes during a nap or at the end of the day. Green tea works because it contains the anti-inflammatory EGCG.

Sleep. If you don’t sleep enough, you rob your body of the chance to repair. As you sleep, your body recovers from the abuse you put it through every day. Therefore, if you are sleep deprived, it shows in the bags underneath your eyes. The National Sleep Foundation recommends adults get at least eight hours of sleep per night. If you can’t get that much sleep, try to take a 15-minute nap. CNN Health recommends resting with your head elevated with a few pillows. Elevating your head prevents fluid from accumulating underneath your eyes.

Stop smoking. Smoking reduces the vitamin C in your body, making your eyes watery, baggy and bloodshot.

Give yourself facial. A facial massage can help reduce the bags under your eyes by providing blood flow to the skin and making your skin more elastic. Clean your face, then put a think layer of light oil or cream over your skin. Place your index finders on the sides of your nostrils and apply pressure. Move your fingers in tiny circular motions for 10 seconds. Take a break and repeat five times. The sides of your nostrils are acupressure points that release toxins and help reduce bagginess under your eyes.

Eat healthy. Fruits and vegetables are loaded with vitamin C that can help reduce the bags under your eyes. Grapefruit, oranges and carrots are all good examples. Vitamin C starts the process of cell regeneration, which gets rid of inflammation and can reduce those dark bags underneath your eyes. Avoid foods that make you retain water. These are foods that contain a high amount of salt. According to health experts at the University of Illinois, you should eat 1,100 to 3,300 milligrams of sodium per day; they also recommend avoiding soy sauce, seasoned salt and Worcestershire sauce.

What causes bags under the eyes?

There are several reasons people get puffy eyes, including:

  • High-salt diet: Eating a lot of salty foods causes you to retain water and leads to swelling.
  • Allergies: Congestion and inflammation from allergies can sometimes exacerbate under-eye puffiness.
  • Medical conditions: Some health conditions such as thyroid problems can cause the eyes to become swollen.
  • Genetics: Having under-eye bags can be a physical characteristic that runs in your family.
  • Natural aging process: Loss of firmness in the skin and muscles happens as you age.

Why under-eye bags form when you get older

“The most common cause of under-eye bags or puffiness is natural aging,” says Shaun Desai, M.D., a facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon at Johns Hopkins Center for Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. “Older skin becomes too lax and tends to fall or wrinkle. The muscles and tissues around the eye can also weaken and contribute to the baggy look. This weakening allows the fat surrounding the eye to bulge out, creating that bubble-like appearance.”

Ways to Get Rid of Eye Bags

There are different approaches to reducing under-eye puffiness, depending on the cause. At-home treatments can temporarily shrink lower lids that are sometimes swollen from fluid pooling in the undereye area.
But, says Desai, home remedies and over-the-counter products can only do so much, “To effectively get rid of under-eye bags that are prominent and permanent, medical treatment is oftentimes necessary.”

At-home treatments for puffy eyes

If you occasionally wake up with puffy lids, these quick fixes may help. They work to reduce swelling until it naturally subsides over the course of the day.

  • Cold compresses: Cooling the area lessens inflammation and swelling by reducing blood flow. You can place anything cold, such as an ice pack, frozen bag of vegetables, chilled cucumber slices or refrigerated spoons, over closed eyes for a few minutes.
  • Hemorrhoid creams: Some people pat over-the-counter creams designed for hemorrhoid treatment under their eyes. Product ingredients such as phenylephrine narrow blood vessels to reduce swelling. But use these products with caution: They may cause irritation in this sensitive area. Also, it’s important to keep this medication from getting in your eyes.
  • Caffeine: Caffeine is a vasoconstrictor, meaning it constricts blood vessels. Many cosmetics companies sell eye creams with caffeine to reduce under-eye puffiness. You can also try resting chilled tea bags (caffeinated black tea) on closed eyes.

Medical options for under-eye bags

If you’re fed up with under-eye bags, these medical treatments can improve and even eliminate them:

Nonsurgical options
These noninvasive treatments smooth the under-eye area:

  • Filler: This treatment places a filler material (usually hyaluronic acid, which is a jelly-like substance) where the under-eye area and cheek meet to create a smooth transition. The injection is performed in a doctor’s office under local anesthetic. Results last six to 12 months.
  • Laser resurfacing: This treatment uses a laser to remove surface layers of wrinkly skin in the under-eye area and stimulate new collagen growth, resulting in firmer skin. Results can last years, depending on your skin type and sun exposure.
  • Chemical peel: A chemical peel also treats wrinkly under-eye skin by removing superficial top layers. An in-office application of a chemical solution dissolves old skin cells to reveal tighter, brighter skin. Depending on your skin type and sun exposure, results can last a few years.

Surgical option
A lower eyelid lift (blepharoplasty) is an outpatient procedure where the surgeon readjusts the fat in the lower eye area and tightens the muscle and skin to create a smooth appearance. In most cases, a lower eyelid lift gets rid of under-eye bags for life — it’s rare for people to need future touch-ups.

However, says Desai, sometimes patients require multiple therapies to treat under-eye bags, such as combining laser resurfacing with filler or an eyelid lift.

What causes eye bags?

Many factors may cause you to get puffy under the eyes:

  • Lack of sleep can trigger both puffiness and dark under-eye circles.
  • Dehydration can cause the skin around your eyes to look saggy and sunken.
  • Fluid retention — such as from allergies or a salty meal — can produce puffiness.
  • Irritation from cosmetics can cause the tissue around your eyes to swell (especially if you don’t wash your face before bed).
  • Aging causes the fat pads in the face to shrink and sink, causing bags to form.
  • Heredity makes some people just more prone to under-eye bags. Sigh.

What can I do to shrink eye bags at home?

Under-eye bags are rarely a cause for concern, but they can be annoying from a cosmetic point of view. If your bags are bugging you, Dr. Kassouf suggests these at-home strategies to look your best.

Prop up your pillow

Sleeping with your head slightly elevated can help prevent fluid from building up around your eyes while you sleep.

Try a cool compress

Cucumbers on your eyes may be a spa-day cliché, but they work, Dr. Kassouf says. A cool compress such as cucumbers or cold tea bags can help reduce puffiness. “Green tea bags are particularly nice because green tea contains antioxidants that can help firm the skin around the eyes,” she says.

Add more moisture

Use a good daily moisturizer to keep skin healthy (just choose a gentle formula for use around your eyes). “Well-moisturized skin has a better moisture barrier, which prevents irritants and allergens from getting into the skin,” Dr. Kassouf says.

Hydrate and avoid alcohol

Dehydration can make the skin around your peepers saggy and sad. Make sure to drink plenty of water. And avoid drinking too much alcohol, which can be dehydrating.

Skip yo-yo dieting

When your weight goes up and down, the fat in your face can grow and shrink — and shift. “Frequent yo-yo dieting can cause the fat pads on your face to become redistributed,” Dr. Kassouf says. To help keep them in place, skip the fad diets and try to maintain a stable weight.

Eye cream for under-eye bags

Alas, there’s no magic potion to shrink bags around the eyes, says Dr. Kassouf. But eye creams might provide some benefit.

Some “instant fix” gels and creams are available but with those, the gel itself shrinks as it dries. Those, though, are only temporary fixes and, Dr. Kassouf says, “They’re helpful but only as long as it doesn’t peel or wear off at the wrong time.”

To pamper the skin around the eyes, consider these skin-soothing ingredients:

  • Retinol.
  • Caffeine.
  • Vitamin C.
  • Antioxidants such as CoQ10.

But a word of caution: “Ingredients such as retinol or antioxidants can be helpful — but if the concentration is too strong, it can break down the moisture barrier and irritate the skin,” Dr. Kassouf says.

To avoid coming on too strong, look for gentle formulas and ease in: When trying something new, wait a day or two to see how your skin responds. Slowly work up to using it daily.

Medical treatments for eye bags

If at-home tools aren’t doing the trick, these in-office procedures can help treat under-eye bags, Dr. Kassouf says.

  • Laser resurfacingcan tighten skin and improve its texture.
  • Botulinum toxin (Botox®)injections can relax some muscles around the eyes, Dr. Kassouf says ­— “so they don’t pull quite so hard and make those drapey lines and bulges.” Botox can also lift the brow, which can help people who have a bulgy or droopy upper eyelid.
  • Fillerscan plump up hollows beneath the eyes. “Fillers can help lift the cheek and make a smooth, continuous curve from the lower eyelid to the upper cheek, instead of a hollow spot,” she says.

Is eye bag surgery a thing?

For a longer-lasting fix, plastic surgery is also an option. In a blepharoplasty procedure, plastic surgeons redistribute fat around the eyes and remove extra skin to banish bags for good.

The right solution for eye bags depends on your budget, your anatomy and how much the bags are bugging you. A dermatologist can help you zero in on the best approach. “We can assess what your goals are and how much you want to invest in the process,” Dr. Kassouf says.

Whatever you choose, it’s nice to know there are ways to shed your excess baggage.

The good news is that you don’t have to go out and purchase lotion and potions to get rid of bags under your eyes. In some cases, you can grab things you already have at home. We talked to the experts to find out what causes bags under your eyes and what you can do about it right now.

What causes bags under your eyes?

“Bags are caused by either fat herniating through the very thin lower eyelid muscle,” notes Dr. Ted Lain, board-certified dermatologist and Chief Medical Officer at Sanova Dermatology, “or from lymphatic swelling, or both.” The good news is that bags under your eyes are often just cosmetic and aren’t a sign of a serious underlying condition. According to Dr. Lucy Chen, board-certified Miami dermatologist of Riverchase Dermatology, they aren’t a cause for concern.

Dr. Chen notes common causes of bags under the eyes include:

  • Dehydration,
  • Consumption of too much salt,
  • Stress,
  • Lack of sleep
  • Smoking
  • Allergies
  • Aging

Sometimes, under-eye bags can even just be caused by genetics, according to Dr. Shuting Hu, cosmetic scientist and founder of Acaderma. In fact, studies have been conducted that confirm and help pinpoint exact genes that contribute to sagging eyelids. The good news is that no matter the cause, there are both at-home and medicinal treatment options for under-eye bags.

Should you see a specialist for bags under your eyes?

You can see a specialist to help pinpoint the cause of bags under your eyes; however, because they often are not concerning, there isn’t usually a need to see a specialist. As with anything, there are always exceptions, however, so if you’re concerned, it’s best to err on the side of caution.

“For the most part, under-eye bags are a cosmetic concern and not a medical concern,” confirms Washington D.C.-based celebrity dermatologist Dr. Tina
Alster, MD, FAAD, creator and co-founder of The A Method® Skincare. “In some instances, vision can be affected due to excessive eyelid drooping and should be evaluated by a specialist. Persistent pain, burning, and itching of the eyes or eyelid skin should also be investigated and treated.”

What ingredients should you look for in eye creams for under-eye bags?

If you choose to use an eye cream that can address under-eye bags specifically, there are a number of ingredients to look for, according to Dr. Hu:

  • Vitamin C, to brighten skin, boost collagen and de-puff under-eye bags
  • Retinoids, an anti-aging ingredient to regenerate cell growth
  • Peptides, which support collagen production
  • Ceramides, to hydrate the skin and improve elasticity

How to get rid of bags under your eyes

Wear sunscreen every day

“Your skin is extremely delicate and prone to sun damage,” notes Dr. Hu. “I recommend wearing sunscreen or a UV-barrier for an added layer of protection from the sun’s harsh UV rays.”

Stay hydrated

“Hydration is key to minimizing swelling around the eyes,” reveals Dr. Chen. “When you are not consuming enough water, your body reacts by retaining water. Fluid retention causes inflammation under the eyes. Try and drink 8 eight oz glasses of water throughout the day, and listen to your body; it will tell you when it is thirsty.”

Get adequate rest

According to Dr. Hu, lack of sleep can be a cause for bags under the eyes; rest can sometimes help reduce the appearance of these bags.

Use a cold compress

“Either in the mornings or right before bed, applying something cold will help the blood vessels to constrict quickly for some temporary relief and this will also help with bringing down any swelling,” explains Dr. Hu.

Place green tea bags under the eyes

“The tea is loaded with anti-inflammatory properties and the caffeine constricts the blood flow that is causing the puffiness,” notes Dr. Chen. “You can soak the tea bags and then refrigerate for 10-20 minutes. Then place the tea bags on your eyes for about 10-25 minutes.”

Drinking turmeric tea

“Or [you can try] applying turmeric under the eyes can minimize bags and dark circles,” reveals Dr. Chen. “Turmeric is a natural antioxidant that contains antimicrobial properties that brighten dark circles and fight inflammation.”

Stop smoking

Dr. Chen notes that smoking can be a cause of under-eye bags. The American Academy of Ophthalmology explains smoking contributes to collagen loss, leading to thinner skin under the eyes that can make bags more visible.

Seek treatment for allergies

Dr. Hu notes that allergies are a cause of under-eye bags, and seeking treatment for allergies and/or taking over-the-counter allergy medications may help reduce puffiness.

Sleep with your head elevated

“Elevating your head at night will prevent fluids from pooling under your eyes when you sleep,” shares Dr. Alster.

Limit your fluid intake as it gets closer to bedtime

Dr. Alster notes this will also help prevent fluid-build up when you are lying down for bed.

Eat collagen-rich foods

“Vitamin C is a powerful vitamin for your skin’s health,” explains Dr. Hu. “Having a diet that includes foods high in Vitamin C and amino acids will boost your collagen production which will result in healthier, plumper skin.”

Reduce your salt intake

According to Dr. Alster, this can help prevent swelling, even under your eyes.

Use a jade roller

“Jade rollers are another excellent tool you can use at home for under-eye bags,” shares Dr. Chen. “The rollers can calm and tighten the skin; tightening the skin creates a smooth appearance. They also massage the epidermis (outermost layer of the skin), which helps reduce puffiness from lymphatic fluid-build up.”

Use a topical treatment

“If [under-eye bags] are due to swelling, topicals that reduce inflammation and constrict vessels can help,” explains Dr. Lain. “Look for ingredients such as caffeine, aloe, green tea extract, manuka honey and Vitamin C.”

Use an under-eye concealer

The American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends the use of cosmetic concealers to help hide under-eye bags and dark circles.

Contact a specialist

“If you ever find that your under-eye bag swelling is persistent, uncomfortable, or causing pain, you should see a specialist to check and see if there are any more serious, underlying causes,” adds Dr. Hu.


Dr. Lain notes that if you see a specialist and your under-eye bags are caused by fat herniating through muscle, surgery may be a viable treatment option.
