How to play office april fool’s day pranks

Hoping to pull an April Fools’ Day joke on someone? Here are some simple ideas for some last-minute April Fools’ Day pranks you can stage.

Put superglue on a coin

This simple prank is easy to set up. Place superglue on a coin and stick it onto the sidewalk. Then point out the coin to the person you’re trying to trick to have them pick it up. They’ll be stuck in a sticky situation.

. or a jar

Put superglue around the lid of a jar and ask someone for help opening it. You can do this trick with any other objects you might need help with in some way.

Rubber band the sink

Place a rubber band around your sink sprayer and whenever someone goes to turn the tap on, they’ll get splashed with water.

Keep soap from lathering

Coat a bar of soap with clear nail polish. Let it dry before placing it back in the bathroom or sink where it’s in use. Those who use it will never be able to develop a lather when washing their hands.

Put plastic wrap on a doorway

Spread plastic wrap across a doorway to see people bounce off the film while trying to pass through.

. or over a toilet bowl

Following the same procedure as the aforementioned plastic wrap prank, this one might have a messier result.

Make a sponge brownie

Spread some chocolate or any other icing all over a sponge, cover it with lots of sprinkles and offer it to someone as a sweet treat.

. or a box cake

Cover a cardboard box about the size of a cake with frosting, sprinkles and any other cake decorations, in a similar way done with the sponge brownie. Then ask someone to slice the cake for you.

. or homemade Oreo cookies

Buy a pack of Oreo cookies and replace the white creme filling with white toothpaste before offering them to someone.

Send an envelope of glitter

Place a generous amount of glitter inside an envelope or package. Secure it well so that the person opening the package will need to use some force to rip it open and be showered with glitter.

Bug a lampshade

Cut out a piece of paper roughly into the shape of a cockroach or other bug. Tape it to the inside of a lampshade and when someone turns the lamp on, it will create the illusion of a giant bug hanging around inside of it.

April Fools’ Day is a great opportunity to lift the spirits of your team and add excitement to their day. A memorable joke can go a long way in making employees feel connected to one another, leading to better communication and productivity.

If the stapler-in-Jell-o style prank is not your thing (fans of The Office will understand), here are 10 clever practical jokes to try this April Fools’ Day, whether you’re in office or working remotely.

Pranks for the Office

  • Change a colleague’s computer wallpaper to something ridiculous. If they have more than one monitor, you have more than one opportunity to start their day with something goofy. It’s funniest if you keep to a theme, and bonus points if you continue the theme beyond their screens. Try printing out some additional photos to decorate their desk area.
  • Who doesn’t love free snacks at the office? Bring in one healthy snack and one guilty pleasure treat your coworkers will love. Swap the boxes, so the healthy snack is packaged as the treat and vice versa. One good example is setting out a vegetable tray disguised as a box of donuts, and then hiding the donuts from the box in the office fridge.

Pranks for Remote Workers

  • Before your next big meeting (think all-hands for smaller teams or a department-wide meeting for bigger companies), choose a few teammates to choreograph a quick flash mob-type dance. Decide when you’ll start and if you want any props. This prank takes a lot of preparation, but is definitely worth it once you see your team’s reactions!
  • Take the (virtual) vacation you’ve always dreamed of, and make your coworkers jealous. Find a realistic-looking Zoom background that makes it look like you’re sitting on a lounge chair at the beach. Consider one of these. Dress the part and see if anyone calls your bluff.
  • Warn everyone that your keyboard is broken, and go the whole day pretending it’s true. Choose a common letter to “malfunction,” and send messages with that letter purposely missing from words. For example, if you choose the letter “T,” you might write something like, “jus leing you all know my lapop keyboard is acing up, and the letter after “S” isn’ working!”
  • Create a fake colleague! Give them a work email address or Slack profile and introduce them to your whole team. Watch the friendly welcome messages pour in, and the panic HR experiences when they can’t recall this new hire. To take it one step further, wait until the end of the day and plan a virtual meeting to introduce the new employee. Set up a laptop for your pet or child and see how long it takes for everyone to realize the new employee’s a little underqualified.
  • Speaking of Slack, you could even change your profile photo and display name and take on an alternate identity for the day. Whether you choose a fictional character, a celebrity or steal a coworker’s identity, the whole team will be abuzz when the unidentified person chimes in with a great idea in the company channel.

When planning a prank at work, keep a few things in mind: it shouldn’t put anyone or anything in harm’s way. This means to avoid anything that could be offensive, damage property or expose private information. The bottom line is to remain respectful, safe and professional while making everyone laugh. And of course, have fun!

April Fools’ Day (April 1st) is fast approaching, so we thought we might offer a few prank ideas for the more mischievous pandas among you (and if you’re not prone to mischief, now you’ll have some idea about what to look out for).

It’s unclear exactly where the April Fool tradition originated, but some people are more than happy to have the opportunity to play personal pranks on their friends, family members or coworkers. Similar precursor holidays can be found in Rome (the Festival of Hilaria on March 25th) and the medieval Feast of Fools in December. Some also believe that the holiday stems from Pope Gregory XIII’s decision to restore January 1st as New Year’s day on the Gregorian calendar – the Julian calendar that it replaced celebrated New Year’s day on April 1st.

We definitely don’t advocate hurting anyone or destroying or damaging anyone’s property, but if you want to prank someone – here are 25 good ways to do it!

Foolproof Fun Lesson Activities for April Fool’s Day

Nothing helps an ESL class relax more than some good old-fashioned laughter. And isn’t that what April Fool’s Day is all about?

On this day when so many take the time to play pranks and practical jokes, give your ESL students the chance to join in the fun, and who knows? Maybe you’ll inspire them to play some pranks of their own. Here are some ideas for April Fool’s activities for your ESL class.

Fun April Fool’s Day Activities

A Prank with Appeal

There’s no better way to illustrate the meaning of a prank than to simply play one. You will need a ripe banana and a toothpick. Stick the toothpick into the banana, preferably where there’s already a spot. Move the toothpick left and right inside the banana, and cut through the fruit – make sure you don’t cut through the peel. Take out the toothpick and repeat five to six times on different spots on the banana.

Now in class, tell you’re students you’re in the mood for a snack. Give the banana to one of your students and ask him or her to peel it for you – you can pretend you’re busy doing something else, like erasing the board. Witness your students’ looks of surprise and bafflement as they see the banana has been sliced inside the peel!

Briefly explain to your students the tradition of playing pranks for April Fool’s Day. Tell them they can play this prank at home, and show them how to prep the banana. Other pranks your students can try at home include switching sugar for salt or replacing fresh eggs with hard-boiled ones.

Fool Me Once…

There are a great deal of expressions and phrases with the word “fool”. Some of the most common are:

  • Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.
  • A fool and his money are soon parted.
  • Fools rush in where angels fear to tread.
  • A man who is his own lawyer has a fool for a client.

Introduce these, or others, to your students and ask them to explain the message the phrase is trying to convey and to which situations these phrases may apply. Recommended for upper-intermediate to advanced students; however, there are plenty of other shorter expressions that you may use with students in lower levels, like “a fool’s paradise” or “fool’s gold”. You will find these and more at PhraseFinder.com.

April Fool’s Reading

Here are two great options for April Fool’s reading activities:

The Very Bad Yorkshire Joke – This worksheet comes complete with introduction and follow-up activities. See if your students get the joke!

April Fool’s Day – HeadsUpEnglish provides this great reading task, which also comes with audio you can download (simply right click where it says Listen Now and go to the Save Link As option to download the audio file to your computer), plus a worksheet you can use in class.

Foolish Games

April Fool’s is a great opportunity to teach vocabulary related to humor, namely words like joke, hoax, prank, trick, surprise, annoy, etc… EnchantedLearning.com has tons of worksheets, puzzles, and other fun activities that are ideal for your youngest learners.

Who Can You Fool?

For this writing assignment, ask students to come up with their own practical joke or prank. Make sure they write the materials that will be needed first, then, the steps for the setup, and finally the execution of the prank itself. Walk around and supply hints or ideas as needed. Students share their pranks with the class, then, vote for the best one!

A Fool’s Debate?

This is a great speaking task for intermediate to advanced students, whether they are teens or adults. Discuss what makes a practical joke appropriate or inappropriate? Where should they be played? What lines should never be crossed? When does good old-fashioned fun become a painful embarrassment? Now’s a good time to review the real meaning behind April Fool’s – that it should be a day of fun for everyone, rather than simply a good opportunity to have fun at someone else’s expense.

Watch Videos – Just for Laughs!

Just for Laughs is a hidden camera show that best illustrates the true spirit of practical jokes. Watch some of these pranks on VideoBash with your students and you will have a classroom full of roaring laughter. Discuss people’s reactions: how do they react when they realize they’ve been fooled? Make sure you choose videos that are appropriate to your students’ ages.

So, if you’ve been focusing too much on grammar lately, or giving your students way too much homework, lighten up! Laughter is the best medicine, right? Forget about reported speech for one day and try these fun April Fool’s activities instead.

Reorganise the house

While we’re all staying at home, we’ve become quite used to our surroundings.

So to mess with family members, why not reorganise the kitchen cupboards so people won’t know where to find plates and pans?

Or you might even turn all the books on the bookshelf upside down and wait for your loved ones to be confused.

You can even take this prank a bit further and change all of the family pictures in the house.

Trending

Tape printed pictures of some well known celebrity faces onto beloved family photos.

All that’s left is to wait for someone to notice Dad has been replaced by Daniel Craig.

Whoopee cushions

Whoopee cushions are a classic prank from our school days and they’re easy to obtain online.

Just place one under the sofa cushions and wait for the fart noise – guaranteed hilarity.

Because honestly, why not use the digital opportunity for a joke?

After a full year of remote school, I think we can all agree it is in no way a decent substitute for the real deal. Not even close. And while many schools have now fully opened, there are still lots of kids plodding along through classes via their computer screens. It is . . . less than ideal. Which is why you should totally encourage your kid to liven up her four millionth Zoom with one of these 11 zany online April Fools’ Day pranks.

Last year, April Fools’ went largely unrecognized. Mainly because at that time, reality itself felt like an unbelievable joke. It’s rather heartening and encouraging that a year later, I think we all feel a bit more up to acknowledging the silliness of the day and having some laughs. From changing your background to the surface of Mars, to donning a mustache and wig, there are lots of goofball ways kids can prank their peers this April 1.

Though I think we can all agree the greatest Zoom laugh we’ve had this year wasn’t intended as a prank at all. Cat lawyer, we salute you. Now, and forever. Case closed. Meow.

Pull A Background Switch

This one can be super funny, but you need to prepare a bit. In the days leading up to April Fools’ Day, see if the teacher walks off the screen for a moment, giving you or your kiddo an opportunity to screenshot their background, which is probably their living room or office. Then, using the Zoom background feature, set their house as your own background (you can even have everyone in the class do this for extra emphasis). Then see how long it takes the teacher to realize that it looks like everyone is setting in their house. It’s sure to be a funny, confusing surprise.

Try Snap Camera

You probably know of SnapChat already, but they also make a desktop app known as Snap Camera (which Elite Daily explains how to use). You can add a fun filter to your Zoom to give everyone in the class a little April Fools’ surprise. There are hilarious wigs, glasses, and other accessories to choose from, or your kiddo can show up to class as their favorite animal or another selection from Snap Camera’s WFH collection (which stands for “win from home,” per Bustle), which includes toilet paper binoculars or a cat sitting on their head.
