Limited functionality but a great first start

For months, trying to use TikTok on a PC has been a tough challenge. We were forced to use strange desktop apps or try to force workarounds with Android emulators, but that day has come to an end.

TikTok has now finally released a TikTok PC app and it’s available straight within the browser. For the most part, the functionality works the same as it does on the mobile, although you’ll need to wrap your head around the desktop layout, which can be a little confusing at first. Some features are also disabled, but it’s a great first start for desktop users.

How To Browse TikTok On Your PC

To access TikTok on PC, simply visit TikTok.com. Once you’re there, click the Watch Now button to get started. You now have access to TikTok on your desktop.

You can browse by clicking on each video panel on the trending homepage to watch it, or click discover in the very top right to find more content.

You may notice that functionality is a little bit limited. You won’t be able to search for specific tags or phrases, but there is a workaround. If you want to search for a specific tag, simply click on the URL bar at the top of the page and type the following address:

https://www.tiktok.com/tag/KEYWORD-HERE.

How to send direct messages on tiktok

Unfortunately, functionality has been limited to encourage more installs to mobile devices, so this is the only workaround to browse past the standard trending tags right now.

You can also manually search for specific users by using the following URL – https://www.tiktok.com/@USERNAMEHERE.

For now, these are the main workarounds you’ll need to use to browse TikTok on your PC. We predict TikTok will limit functionality on PC for the foreseeable future so you should bookmark this page in case you need to follow our guide again.

How To Upload TikTok Videos & Access Your Account On PC

You can upload videos to TikTok on PC through the main website, and functionality is similar to the mobile app when you follow our steps below. First, visit TikTok.com and click Watch Now if you haven’t already.

After, click the upload button in the top right, and then choose the login option you’ve used for your account in the past. If you’re new to TikTok, you can use another social platform like Twitter or Instagram to login and automatically create an account.

How to send direct messages on tiktok

We would highly recommend downloading the TikTok app first, and setting up your account there as you’ll have more control in the app itself. You can download the TikTok iOS app here and the Android app here. If you need to learn the basics, you can find out how to use TikTok on mobile here.

Once you have signed in, you can start to upload videos. Simply click the upload video at the top right of the screen at any time to get started. You’ll be taken to the upload page. You can click Select a Video to Upload to be taken to your file browser on your computer. Navigate to a video you’d like to upload, and then double click it to start uploading.

It’s important to know that the video must be under 60 seconds in length and 720×1280 resolution or higher. Videos shot in portrait mode will always work out better, but landscape videos will upload too. When a landscape video is viewed, they’ll have black bars above and below the video.

How to send direct messages on tiktok

Whilst your video is uploading, you’ll have some options to edit the caption, tag users, and add hashtags. Click either of the @ or # symbols and you’ll be able to type to find tags.

How to send direct messages on tiktok

When you start typing, suggestions will appear. This is useful if you want to find popular hashtags, because the results will showcase just how many TikTok videos have been posted for each hashtag. You can read our TikTok marketing guide if you need help with choosing Hashtags.

Many of TikTok’s most powerful editing features are lost on the desktop. You cannot choose music, which is one of TikTok’s biggest features and you cannot add captions on the video itself. However, for those that struggle to upload regularly from their mobile, it’s a great alternative.

If you want to try and get all of the features for TikTok, an alternative option would be to download an Android emulator on your PC. That way, you can download the mobile app within the emulator and get access to all features.

This approach has some difficulties, though. TikTok often crashes or doesn’t respond when you try to upload through an emulator – the developers try their hardest to stop emulator usage so it’s hit or miss whether it’ll actually work.

Will Full TikTok Functionality Come to Desktop Soon?

How to send direct messages on tiktok

TikTok is taking a similar approach to Instagram with how they provide access from the browser. Functionality is purposely limited to encourage more app installs.

Unfortunately, this means TikTok’s desktop usage may always lack the great video editing features available on mobile. On top of this, uploading content through Android emulators rarely works. There are many Microsoft Store apps that claim to offer TikTok features on desktop, but through our research we’ve yet to find one that genuinely works.

So what does this mean? You’ll either need to settle for the limited functionality on the official TikTok website, or if TikTok is paramount to your work or social life, you’ll need to change up your workflow so that you can easily transfer videos to and from your mobile device to upload them there.

People who create content for TikTok are, in many cases, focused on growing their audience and becoming more and more popular. That means that the more shares, comments, and “likes” they get, the better. TikTok also gives people the ability to send creators DMs (direct messages). Ideally, DMs can be used to communicate one-on-one with fellow TikTokers and share a productive convo.

Of course, this is the internet. We’re therefore forced to admit that sometimes, DMs are anything but pleasant for the people receiving them. Luckily, TikTok makes it relatively easy to control who is allowed to contact you with a direct message. If you’re looking to turn off your DMs, here’s what you need to know.

Here’s how to turn off your DMs on TikTok.

As part of their plan to create a safe online space for everyone, TikTok only allows your friends to send you DMs through the app. That means that you need to follow them and they need to follow you in order to communicate privately. So if one of your so-called friends is sending you unwanted messages, you can simply unfollow them or remove them from your followers.

To remove them from your followers, go to their profile, tap the three dots in the upper right-hand corner, then select the “remove this follower” option. They will not be notified that you have removed them as a follower, but they will be able to see that they no longer follow you if they visit your profile.

To unfollow another user, simply go to their profile and tap the “Following” icon to unfollow them. Again, they won’t be notified that you have unfollowed them, but they will no longer be able to see you on their followers list.

Like for part 2 it gets so much worse ##trolling ##dms ##instadm ##instagram ##insta ##creepy ##getthelook def gonna regret posting

You can also elect to turn off your DMs completely. If you do, that means that no one — friends included — will be able to send you a message on TikTok (though they will still be able to comment on your videos if you have comments turned on). If you want to choose this nuclear option, go to your profile, tap the three dots in the upper right-hand corner of your screen, then select “Privacy and safety.” Then, tap “Who can send you messages” and toggle the selection from “Friends” to “Off.”

As you probably already know, turning off your DMs on TikTok will not block direct messages on other platforms. If you want to thoroughly block someone from contacting you via any internet outlet (like Twitter or Instagram), you’ll have to turn off your DMs on your other social media accounts as well.

At the end of the day, turning off your DMs is a good way to keep your TikTok experience as positive as possible. It can also be a good way to give yourself a bit of a respite from the constant barrage of messages you may otherwise be subjected to. After all, do you really need people to be able to contact you in 12 different ways? Probably not!

TikTok will introduce a minimum age requirement of 16 for its direct messaging feature at the end of April in a bid to gain parental trust during the coronavirus lockdown

  • Only TikTok users aged 16+ can send and receive direct messages from April 30
  • The changes aim to help parents ‘trust the service’ during coronavirus lockdown
  • The platform has been criticised for allowing 13-year-olds to create an account
  • Here’s how to help people impacted by Covid-19

TikTok is introducing a minimum age requirement of 16 to use its direct messaging feature, to help ensure families can ‘trust the service’ during coronavirus lockdown.

By the end of this month, only users aged 16 and over will be able to send and receive direct messages on the video-sharing platform.

TikTok has said the decision is part of efforts to boost safety at a time when messaging services are increasingly being used to stay in touch with loved ones.

Any TikTok user under the age of 16 who will impacted by the change will receive an in-app notification from Thursday.

On April 30, existing users and new users who do not meet the new age requirements for direct messaging will no longer have access to it.

TikTok has previously come under fire from for its live-streaming capability that potentially allows anyone to view videos of children.

The platform, which allows users as young as 13 to create an account, acknowledged the potential of direct messaging to be ‘misused’ by predatory adults.

WHAT IS TIK TOK?

TikTok is a Chinese social media app where users can live stream, create short videos and music videos and Gifs with a host of functions.

TikTok’s tagline is ‘Make every second count’.

It was the most downloaded app in the US in 2018 and the world’s fourth most downloaded app in 2018, ahead of Instagram and Snapchat.

TikTok is known in China as Douyin where it was launched in 2016 and then made more widely available around the world in 2017.

Douyin is still the version of the app used in China, available to download separately to TikTok.

The app was merged with popular music video lip-syncing app Musical.ly, also with headquarters in China.

Most children use the app to film themselves lip-syncing to chart hits.

It offers users a raft if colourful modification and editing tools including overlaying music, sound, animated stickers, filters and augmented reality (AR) for creating short videos.

The Beijing based social network has more than 500 million active users and the company is now worth more than $75 billion (£58 billion).

‘Direct messaging is an amazing tool that enables people to make new friends and connections no matter where they are in the world, but despite its potential for good, we understand the potential for misuse,’ said Cormac Keenan, TikTok’s head of trust and safety for Europe, the Middle East and Africa, in a blog post.

‘Today’s announcement is about going one step further to put in place stronger proactive protections to keep younger members of our community safe.

‘We look forward to the feedback of our community and all of our stakeholders as we constantly improve with new features and resources to help our community manage their TikTok experience.’

Keenan said more robust safety features were needed as more people came to places like TikTok as a means of staying in touch with others while social distancing.

‘More than ever, families are turning to platforms like TikTok to keep entertained, active, and informed,’ he said.

‘As we are all further apart physically, platforms like ours are providing people with ways to express their creativity, seek some light relief, and show support for their friends, families, and communities.

‘At the same time, we know families are focused on ensuring that their family members have an appropriate experience and most importantly, that they are safe when they are online.’

TikTok already prevents users from receiving unsolicited messages from other users who they are not friends with and has a 16-and-over age limit for a user to host a live stream.

As well as this, the China-based social network doesn’t allow videos or images to be shared within direct messaging.

TikTok has already come under fire from a children’s charity for its live-streaming capability that potentially allow anyone to view videos of children

Last year, the company changed its virtual gifting policies to only allow those over 18 to purchase, send, or receive virtual gifts, such as emojis.

Before this was introduced, anyone older than 13 was allowed to send virtual gifts, and anyone over 16 could receive them.

In February, it introduced ‘Family Safety Mode’, which links a parent or guardian’s account to their child’s account to keep them safe.

Parents can use the system to control how long children spend on TikTok each day, limit or turn off direct messaging and rebuff potentially inappropriate content.

Andy Burrows, head of child safety online policy at the NSPCC praised the new ‘proactive’ step taken by the social media firm.

‘This is a bold move by TikTok as we know that groomers use direct messaging to cast the net widely and contact large numbers of children,’ he said.

‘Offenders are taking advantage of the current climate to target children spending more time online, but this shows proactive steps can be taken to make sites safer and frustrate groomers from being able to exploit unsafe design choices.

‘It’s time tech firms did more to identify which of their users are children and make sure they are given the safest accounts by default.’
