“The earlier someone starts therapies, the more likely they are to be effective,” Wasserbauer says. “If you are losing more than 100 hairs per day, or if your hair is less thick when you run your hand through it, it is worth seeing a hair expert.”
A doctor can determine if you can treat thin hair without medical intervention, or if it is a sign of alopecia — a more severe condition in which hair falls out in patches or causes balding.
If your hair loss is not due to an underlying health condition, you may be able to thicken your hair with the following lifestyle changes:
1. Eat a healthy diet
A nutritious diet is critical to hair health, says Sanusi Umar, MD, CEO and medical director of Dr. U Skin and Hair Clinic in Manhattan Beach, California. This is because adequate nutrition ensures hair follicles construct hair shafts of normal thickness.
According to Umar, certain nutrients are essential to the thickness and growth of hair, like:
- Protein, which makes up hair follicles. Sources of protein include eggs, meat, and dairy products.
- Iron, which carries oxygen throughout your body, including hair follicles, and aids in cell repair and growth. Sources of iron include spinach, beans, and seafood.
- B vitamins, particularly biotin. Studies linked biotin deficiency to hair loss. Biotin is found in many foods, including sweet potatoes, fish, seeds, and nuts.
- Vitamin C has antioxidant properties, which protect hair follicles from damage. The body also uses vitamin C for collagen production, which can strengthen hair. Foods with vitamin C include berries and citrus fruits.
- Omega-3 fatty acids, which, according to a 2015 study, are associated with hair growth. Sources of omega-3 fatty acids include fatty fish, like salmon.
2. Reduce stress levels
Cortisol, the stress hormone, disrupts the functioning of the hair follicle and contributes to thinning hair. A 2016 study found high levels of cortisol can cause certain proteins in hair to break down.
It is important to differentiate between different types of stress, Wasserbauer says. If you experience a stressful event, you may notice a period of hair loss and accelerated thinning, but the hair usually recovers within a year. Ongoing hair loss is more serious, and unless it is caught, diagnosed, and treated, it may result in permanent loss.
If you’re concerned stress may be causing hair thinning, you can alleviate stress and lower cortisol levels by:
- Exercising regularly
- Practicing relaxation techniques, like meditation
- Eating a healthy diet with fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and lean meat
- Sleeping seven to eight hours a night
3. Address a hormone imbalance
A hormone imbalance, such as during pregnancy or menopause, can cause thinning hair. A decrease in estrogen or an increase in testosterone levels can thin hair as well, Umar says.
Research found an imbalance of hormones like estrogen, progesterone, and prolactin can all contribute to hair loss. Hair loss can also be due to an imbalance of thyroid hormones, Umar says.
Signs of a hormone imbalance, like a thyroid condition, include:
- Irregular periods
- Increased facial hair
- Weight gain
- Dry skin
- Brittle hair and nails
If you think a hormone imbalance may be causing thin hair, reach out to your doctor, Umar says. A primary care physician may refer you to a dermatologist, who specializes in skin and hair, or an endocrinologist who specializes in hormonal imbalances.
4. Stop heat styling
Heat styling products, like blow dryers, straighteners, and curling irons all weaken the hair shaft and fiber, Umar says. These products damage the cuticle on the outer layer of the hair, especially if the heat setting is set too high or you use a heating product daily.
“Using heating styling products excessively can cause breakage and cause the scalp to become stressed thus leading to thinning hair,” Umar says.
A 2004 study found using a curling iron causes hair to weaken and break, though hair treated with a conditioner showed less damage than hair that was not.
Another 2011 study found using a blowdryer caused more surface damage to hair than natural drying, but how you use a blowdryer matters. For instance, the study found blow drying hair at a distance of 15 cm with continuous motion caused less damage than letting hair air dry or using a hair dryer without motion very close to your hair.
If you use heat styling products regularly and have noticed your hair thinning, try reducing how often you use these products. To prevent damage, you should also limit other treatments, like hair dye, bleach, and chemical treatments.
5. Use sulfate-free shampoo
Sulfates are chemicals found in most shampoos and soaps that provide the “sudsy” effect when you lather them up.
Sulfates also strip hair of its natural oils and moisture, Umar says, causing it to become dry and brittle, which makes it break more easily.
However, switching to a sulfate-free shampoo won’t stop hair loss, Umar says. Using a sulfate-free shampoo can help preserve the natural oils in your hair, reduce irritation, and potentially prevent future damage, like hair breakage.
If you have no underlying health conditions causing hair loss, there is no proven way to thicken your hair. However, you can improve overall hair health by eating a nutritious diet, limiting heat styling, and using a sulfate-free shampoo. Healthier hair means less damage and breakage, which can help hair grow longer and thicker.

Brush From Ends to Roots to Reduce Breakage

So much damage and breakage can happen at the fault of your hair-brushing technique. Make sure to use the “bottoms-up” method as well as tools that are gentle on your hair. “It’s vital to detangle from the bottom up, starting at your ends not your scalp,” explains Fernando Salas, creator of White Sands Haircare. “When you comb hair from the bottom up, you are working with less surface area to untangle at one time.” Be extra gentle on your ends—that’s where breakage comes from.
Use a boar-bristled brush for finer hair textures—they’re strong enough to detangle and minimize breakage but gentle enough that they won’t pull out hair strands.
Your hair’s thickness naturally starts to wane in your mid-20s. Smoking, excessive heat and chemical treatments can make the unwanted change even more pronounced. It’s tough to permanently thicken hair, but that doesn’t mean you need to live with fine, limp locks. A flattering haircut or new color can give thin tresses instant volume. Pair your style with body-boosting products for a look you’ll love.
Your quest for thicker hair starts in the shower with the right shampoo. Shampoos formulated for fine hair work by adding volume and strengthening weak strands. Buy a shampoo that’s labeled “thickening” or “volumizing.” If you have gray tresses, look for a product that’s made for that hair type, as all-purpose thickening shampoos may not work as well for gray hair. Coloring your hair makes it look thicker than it really is. Peroxide, used in many hair dyes, doubles the thickness of hair strands. Highlights give hair texture and creatures the illusion of fullness. If you have bangs, dye the bottom layer two shades darker than the rest of your hair to make them seem thicker. Permanent dye may weaken your hair, so consider using a semi- or demi-permanent color instead. Consult a salon stylist if you’re not sure what colors look best on you. If you’d rather experiment or save money, use an at-home dye kit.
To add instant volume to your mane, spritz damp roots with a lifting spray or apply a dab of volumizing mousse. Smooth a thickening cream from the middle of your hair strands to the ends. Twist the rollers 180 degrees and use plastic clips to hold them in place. Remove them after 20 minutes.

HOW TO TEXTURE YOUR HAIR
Despite what you might think, texturizing hair isn’t something that you do at home. It’s actually a technique your hairstylist can use—not something to DIY. With that in mind, let’s break down how the pros do it.
3 TEXTURIZING TOOLS YOUR HAIRDRESSER USES
First, let’s talk tools. These three tools are key for bringing a texturized mane to life.
Texturizing Tool #1. Haircutting scissors. In case you didn’t already know, the scissors your hairdresser uses and the scissors in your kitchen drawer are quite different. Haircutting scissors are specifically shaped to get a precise, accurate cut. They’re smaller in size and have a sharper blade than your typical household pair.
Texturizing Tool #2. Thinning shears. If your hair is on the thicker side, your hairdresser may use thinning shears on your mane. A type of haircutting scissor, thinning shears have a guard on one blade to allow only some hair to be removed with each chop.
Texturizing Tool #3. Razors. Your hairdresser may also use a razor to texturize your mane. And no, we don’t mean the same razor you use to shave. While less precise than using scissors, hairdressing razors create a consistent, soft texturized look.
5 TEXTURIZING TECHNIQUES TO KNOW
Now that you’re familiar with the tools used to texturize hair, let’s go over some popular techniques your hairdresser may use. The following are different methods that can be done with haircutting scissors to create a specific texturized look.
Texturizing Technique #1. Point cutting. One of the most popular haircutting techniques, you’ve likely heard of point cutting at some point—but what is it? This texturizing method is a finishing technique that involves holding your hair vertically and cutting up into the hair. The result? A smooth, texturized cut as opposed to a blunt cut. For subtle texturization, your stylist will hold the scissors straight, cutting directly into the hair. For a bit more texture, they will cut into your hair at a slight angle. Typically, small chunks are cut at a time, though bigger chunks can be cut for a choppy, shaggy look.
Texturizing Technique #2. Twist cutting. This texturizing technique is done by sectioning thin areas of hair, then twisting each as tight as possible from root to ends. As the section is twisted, your hairdresser will cut your hair. When released, you’ll be left with a textured, thinned-out look.
Texturizing Technique #3. Chipping. If you have very thick hair that you could use help managing, this texturizing technique may be just what you need. Your hairdresser will pull a section of hair upward so that it’s parallel with your scalp; then they’ll “chip” away at the mid-lengths of the section with a very light hand. This technique creates a more dramatic texturized look, greatly thinning out thick hair in the process. Make sure to go to a stylist you trust, as going overboard with this technique can leave you with a less than desirable look.
Texturizing Technique #4. Slithering. This texturizing technique is pretty much what it sounds like. Your stylist will start at the mid-lengths of your hair and slither downward toward your ends, leaving the blade of their haircutting scissors open with a light grip. This technique can help thin out thick hair in addition to adding texture. On the flip side, it can also be used to add volume to flat hair when done closer to the scalp.
Texturizing Technique #5. Smooth cutting. With this technique, your stylist will use a hairdressing razor. Remember, this type of razor has a guard, preventing too much hair from being cut at once! Your hairdresser will slide the razor from mid-length to ends in one fluid motion to thin and texturize your strands.

While it won’t help you grow longer hair (that’s a myth, sorry!), using coconut oil before or after you shampoo can give your tresses a natural-looking shine.

Yes! I’ve used castor oil on both my lashes and brows–which are hair follicles, by the way–with pretty good success. In fact, castor oil the main ingredient in WINK . This hair mask is as simple as you can get. Before washing hair, dampen it with a hydrosol like rosewater, or just plain warm water. Spray or comb through hair until it is damp, but not dripping wet.
Then, put a tablespoon of castor oil in the palms of your hands and work it into your hair, starting with the ends first. Add another half or full tablespoon to your hands if you need more. You want your hair to be saturated with the oil but not dripping; how much you use will depend on how long or thick your hair is.
When you’ve saturated your hair, wrap it in a towel or old t-shirt (this is an oil and will leave stains behind, so keep that in mind when you choose the fabric you use). Keep it wrapped for at least 30 minutes, but if you can wait an hour or even longer that will just give the oil more time to work.
When you are ready, hop in the shower, remove the towel, and rinse the oil out with plain water first. Then, use shampoo and conditioner as you normally would. Your hair should feel softer, silkier, and less frizzy after this treatment.

How 1 stylist helped a woman struggling with thinning hair
Sessa is certainly not alone in her struggle. About 80 million people in the U.S. are battling hereditary hair loss, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. Hair loss for women typically presents itself initially as a widening part that progresses into overall thinning.
“Thin hair can also be related to certain medications like thyroid replacement medications, anti-anxiety meds and even birth control pills,” Dr. Shilpi Agarwal, board-certified physician and author of “The 10 Day Total Body Transformation,” told TODAY Style. “All of these medications can affect hormone levels and in turn have an effect on the hair growth cycle, making thinning hair a possibility.”
Mele and experts across the country shared their best at-home and salon tips for women with thinning hair. Here’s what they had to say.
1. Cutting your hair creates more volume
Nervous to cut thin, fine hair? Don’t be! Longer tresses weigh down hair near the scalp, so you lose fullness and volume at the root.
“Some women think by not cutting their hair it’ll make it look thicker, but the reality is you have to cut it because if you don’t it’ll look stringy,” Mele explained.
Heavy layers tent to thin the bottom out even more, so that adds to a thinner, more scraggly appearance overall.
“Finer hair typically looks best when the length is at the collarbone or shorter,” said Holly Pistas, artistic director, master makeup and hair designer at Gordon Salon in Chicago. “With anything longer than that, the ends can look transparent.”
Bobs, lobs or blunt cuts — even pixie cuts — are all great options for giving an appearance of thicker hair. “If your hair lays flat as a board, is prone to static and shows every scissor mark after a cut. I suggest opting for a blunt cut with microlayers,” said Fae Norris from Neighborhood Salon in Los Angeles. You definitely want to avoid “The Rachel,” she added. (Even Jennifer Aniston hated her most-famous haircut.)
2. Don’t cut bangs
“Don’t do it,” Mele warned. Female pattern hair loss typically begins at the crown; by creating bangs, you’re removing hair from where you need it most!
According to experts, you can still create softness around the face with strategic texturing that can give the illusion of bangs, but won’t compromise fullness and volume.
3. Be strategic with layers
Layers can make the hair look skimpy. The key word you should hear from your stylist is “texture,” not “layers.” Hairstylist Claude Baruk of Claude BARUK Salon in Las Vegas suggests starting with a simple cut and style, then adding long bangs followed by a texturized cut, which will provide a fuller look.
“Rather than layering hair, texturizing the ends will make hair look longer and fuller,” he said.
“Keeping layers near the crown of the head gives the hair more lift without interfering with the perimeter, giving the hair and the style more density,” Pistas added.

4. Consider a blunt cut
Patty Mocarski, owner of Little Space Salon in New York City recommends that clients with thin hair keep the ends blunt to give a fuller, thicker appearance. “Don’t shy away from shaping and graduation around the face though,” she said.
“A short precision cut that is worn above the shoulder makes a bold statement while still remaining classic and elegant,” said Cassandra Carter from Oranj Studio in Portland, Oregon.
In short, you want to maintain as much bulk as possible. A longer angle can give the illusion of layers and movement without having to shatter the inside bulk of the haircut. If the hair texture is baby fine, stick with an overall bold shape like a bob and get creative with the face-grazing sections of hair.
5. A darker root gives the appearance of a denser scalp
An effective way to create the perception of thickness is to add color at the root. A slightly deeper root color will create the illusion of depth and can camouflage thinner hair.
“It’s similar to darkening eyebrows to make them appear thicker,” said Norris. While it won’t provide the appearance of volume necessarily, it does make hair look denser.
One caveat: The deeper root color, also known as a “shadow root,” can reflect less light and make some hairstyles appear smoother and flatter. Her suggestion is to take a test drive first with colored dry shampoo. “They provide volume and actually make the scalp appear a bit darker as well,” she said. Plus, it’s temporary so you can experiment before committing!
6. Play with your part
Avoid center part styles and sleek, smooth looks, suggested Dana Caschetta, Eufora national trainer and stylist.
A deep side part will give volume and fullness around the face. Try adding wave and movement through the roots and midshafts of the hair with a curling iron or wand.

Layers are when the top portions of your hair are cut shorter than hair underneath. Layers can range from short to long, and can either be connected—a gradual flow of layers from the shortest layer to longest length—or disconnected, with a layer much shorter than the overall length. There are a few factors to consider when thinking about adding layers to your haircut.
- How thick or thin is your hair? If your hair is thick, it can feel heavy if not cut in a certain way. This weight can start adding unwanted bulk which is more noticeable at certain lengths. A common complaint for medium length hair is that it falls in a triangular bell-shape. This is a perfect example of when layers would be a positive addition to your cut because they will remove weight from the ends, allowing the hair to have more movement. If you fall into the “category” of thick hair but really don’t love layers, ask your Hair Cuttery stylist about removing some weight from the underneath sections of your hair without adding a defined layer. If your hair is on the thinner side, you may want to steer clear of layers. Layers can be a disservice to thin hair because taking away hair from the longest length can leave this section looking sparse and straggly. This isn’t always the case and some people simply prefer a layer so they can add more volume to the style. Here, a disconnected layer at the crown would help give that pop of volume without taking too much from the ends.
- How long is your hair? Still keep in mind the quantity of hair here because those factors play largely into medium and long length styles and some short styles. However, the shorter your hair is cut—like a pixie, for instance—the more the whole cut is based around layers as there really isn’t a base length anymore. This applies to both thin and thick hair. Thick hair is easier to add layers to at any length simply because you’re working with more hair; but a really important length to focus on adding layers is right around shoulder-length (above to just past) as this is where that triangular shape can really take over, adding unfavorable bulk to the sides of the face.
- How fine or coarse is your hair? No matter how thick or thin your hair is, the texture plays a role, too. If your hair is fine and thick, layers will help reduce weight and add movement. If it’s fine and thin, light layers might be preferred, to keep as much hair as possible. Coarse, thick hair is typically very layer-friendly and frequently preferred. - Curly or straight? Those of you with curly hair may prefer more layering than those with straight hair no matter what you determined for the previous factors. Curls tend to respond well and behave better when there is not a blunt weight line as layers allow them more movement and bounce which helps them lay better. Those with straight hair will find themselves relying on the previous three factors to determine what’s best for their hair.

- Long length and medium to thick hair: Add many lengths of layers to create a cascading appearance. This looks especially nice on wavy hair or hair blown out with a large round brush.
- Short to medium length and medium to thick hair: Blunt looks are popular, like the bob and lob (long bob), but for you adding lots of texture and removing weight in addition to some long layers will help this trendy style work for you. Otherwise, opt for a long, textured, medium to long layered cut.
- Long length and thin hair: Try for all one length. Skipping layers altogether will keep your hair looking full. Add some face-framing angles to perk up the style. This will positively add to the overall appearance and prevent your long, thin hair from dragging down your face. This would be an ideal look for straight or wavy hair.
- Short to medium length and thin hair: A blunt bob cut would work wonders for you. The bluntness and length combined will really add a sense of fullness. If your hair is straight, adding texture to it with a curling iron or wand will create a more voluminous style. If you really like height, add a very light, shorter layer at the crown.
- Short length and thin hair: If your hair is thin, don’t be afraid to go short, like pixie short. Short cuts are based around layers and can allow you to achieve considerable volume. Or, take it the other way and make this a super sleek ‘do.

Leave backcombing in the 80s – there are plenty of ways to make thin hair appear thicker without causing any damage to fragile strands. Here, some of London’s leading hairstylists explain exactly how to supersize your strands.
1.Create optical illusions with colour
The man known for bringing balayage to the UK, Jack Howard, says making thin hair look thicker with colour is really simple. The Paul Edmonds salon colourist explains, “The lighter the hair the thinner it can look, so adding dimension into it with darker pieces will add depth.” How so? “This can be done with micro-balayage or baby lights [super subtle highlights], or clever placement of darker colours underneath the surface of the haircut can also really make the hair look thicker”. Think of it like contouring. “It’s an optical illusion, but it works.”
However, pay attention to the detail. Anna Short, colour director at the celebrity favourite salon Daniel Galvin, adds that when colouring finer hair types, less is more. “A few highlights can add texture to the hair, although too many can have the opposite effect and make it look even thinner.” She reiterates that darker hair can naturally look thicker, “therefore – if the skin tone allows – going brunette may help hair to appear fuller”.
If you already have dark hair, “why not try several shades of chocolate rather than just one all over colour” advises Adam Reed, industry authority and founder of Percy & Reed. “Your hairdresser will be able to do this – a box colour wont!”
2.Try discreet extensions and clever cuts
Short also says you can cut your hair thicker. “Opting for a blunter cut over a more layered style also helps to keep the weight in the hair, making it look fuller,” she advises. And don’t forget regular trims – “to keep the ends strong and prevent it from becoming wispy”.
Of course, faking it with some hair extensions is always an option, and possibly ” the most effective way to make thin hair look thicker,” says Shannon Lewis, colour director at Neville Hair and Beauty.
Fran Dixon, creative colourist at Hari’s Salon on the King’s Road, advises “try adding few extensions in at the sides.” No one need know. “You don’t need a full head of extensions, just a few to give instant thickness and guts.” Ask your stylist for a consultation or colour-match your hair to some clip-ins to use at home.
3.Products, products, products
The power of products can’t be denied, either. Reed recommends using prep products on fine hair “such as the L’Oreal Professionnel Tecni.ART Pli and the Full Volume Extra Mousse”. Apply them before you dry your hair to get maximum body. Additionally, the appropriate use of a texturising product afterwards can create further fullness. Lewis says to try the L’Oreal Professionnel Tecni.ART Morning After Dust; a dry shampoo “which is great for giving volume to your natural hair.”
Don’t forget that finer hair types are more susceptible to damage, “so good home care is essential,” adds Short. “I recommend the Kerastase Volumifique range [a thickening effect shampoo, conditioner, mousse and spray] as it creates body in the hair while keeping it strong.”

Is Your Hair Thin, Fine or Both?
One thing to understand before talking styles is whether your hair is thin or fine. Sometimes these words are used interchangeably, but the truth is, they are two different things. Thin hair speaks of the density, or quantity, of hair you have, while fine refers to the texture. There are three categories for density: thin, medium and thick; and there are three for texture, meaning the diameter of each strand: fine, medium and course. Your hair could be any combination of these, like coarse and thin, just as it could be fine and thin. If your hair is fine (what people often call “thin”) but thick (you have lots of it), you will likely prefer different styling options than someone who has thin hair of any texture. Cuts to Consider for Thin Hair
Ok, so you’ve determined you do indeed have thin hair. Here are some different cuts that tend to enhance and flatter thinner hair: The shorter you keep your cut, the thicker it will look. Trying a pixie will give your hair more volume and add a fuller appearance. The longer the hair is, the more it can appear weighed down and flat. A short style allows your hair to lift from the root and not be pulled flat by the weight of your hair (especially with the addition of a little product worked in with a round brush).
The graduated bob will always be a timeless option. This style will fall around chin length and provides more density at the ends. Adding layers provides this density, and you’ll still be able to achieve some height at the root area without it being weighed down. A little longer than the bob, and quite popular, is the lob. Again, keeping as much weight as possible around the perimeter will keep your hair looking the thickest. If this length weighs your hair down more than you’d like because of its length, incorporate a very light layer. This layer will not take too much away from your ends but will allow some extra height at your root.
Styling Thin Hair
Styling products and tools along with a great cut are really important. You do need to be mindful not to use too much product, though. The more product you add to your hair, the more it can be weighed down. The same goes with conditioner—don’t use too much if you use any at all. If you do condition, don’t put it near your scalp—keep it mid-length, or lower, to your ends and, if possible, try not to use it each wash. With that said, a nice volumizing root spray like Cibu High Top and thickening lotion such as Cibu High Density Volumizing Cream might be the perfect combination of products to give you the right amount of lift and fullness. After you add your products, how you blow dry your hair is important. To gain lift at the root and make your hair appear fuller, you want to dry your hair in the opposite direction it grows. If your hair is medium to long length, flip your head and rough-dry it upside down, then flip over and finish with a round brush, working the root area up (toward the ceiling) or forward (toward the mirror). If you pull your brush downward (toward the floor) when drying, there won’t be lift because that’s where the hair is used to falling—it’s all about counteracting! If your hair is short, you’ll still want to dry it with the round brush in an upward motion to add volume, then, when dry, use a styling paste or gel to give a finished look.
Whether your hair is long or short, another trick is to switch your part around. Your hair “learns” where to fall when you part it in a particular spot day after day. If you typically part on the right, switch it to the left for a few days, then switch back. This change of direction will lift the hair at the root because it has not been trained to lay that way. Don’t give it a chance to learn, and switch the part again to gain volume!

- Identify the areas of your hair which is overly thick, and using a comb, part the area into even sections.
- Hold out one of the sections of the hair and slide the thinning shears halfway through the length of the hair from the scalp. Make sure that you do not attempt to thin hair from the roots or the ends.
- Holding the shears at a forty-five degree angle, make a snip with the thinning shears.
- Remove the thinning shears and run a comb through the section.
- Move on to the next section of hair and snip hair with the thinning shears in the same way.
- Repeat the same procedure with the remaining sections.
- Step back after you are done, and take a careful look at your hair in the mirror. If your hair looks less poofy and voluminous, then you are done.
- If you feel that the first snip has not thinned the hair section enough, then you need to snip it once again. This time, place the thinning shears ⅓ rd way up from the scalp.
- Snipping twice will be sufficient for straight and wavy hair, while curly hair may require a third snip as well.

- Use a paddle brush while blow drying your hair. This will ensure that your hair remains straight and does not frizz.
