Feel like a movie star yourself when you book the VIP Experience at Universal Studios Hollywood. First there’s that valet parking —not bad. Then there’s that private entrance leading you to an exclusive lounge, where you relax with snacks and refreshments, in your own A-lister’s inner sanctum. Next, you meet your expert guide for the day, who will go out of his or her way to find out what kind of insider tips and movie facts you’d like to know more about as you tour the back lot and soundstages. They’re also very helpful when the urge to take a group photo in front of your favorite movie set strikes.

Unlike the standard back-lot tour, this tour lets you get out of your group’s private trolley and walk around. You’ll be able to wander around and get up-close looks at sets, learn about lighting and camera angles, and see where current TV shows and movies are being shot. Pose for a selfie at the steps of Norman Bates’ house from Psycho, or wander through the Bravermans’ living room from the long-running TV series Parenthood. A favorite stop is the massive prop warehouse, which houses an impressive collection of movie paraphernalia, from vintage bowling bags to full suits of armor. The tour includes a gourmet lunch prepared by the studio’s executive chef and served in a private dining room, as well as front-of-the-line privileges for all rides throughout the day, prime seats secured by your guide at all shows, and meet-and-greets with featured performers.

If Hollywood is the land of make-believe, then Universal Studios Hollywood is your chance to step into that fantasy world. On a sprawling complex in the Hollywood Hills, this movie-studio-meets-theme-park blends a studio tour with thrilling action rides that swoosh, dive, swoop, and astonish with dizzying special effects.

Step inside the park’s front gates, for instance, and you can choose from the Despicable Me Minion Mayhem ride, the zombie-filled AMC’s Walking Dead Attraction, or the popular WaterWorld live show, with stunning pyrotechnic effects and real-life stunt actors performing daredevil feats. Head to the right and you’ll arrive at The Wizarding World of Harry Potter™, complete with a recreation of Hogwarts Castle and Hogsmeade Village. Toward the rear of the park, you’ll find the Springfield of Simpsons fame, including an irreverent simulator ride and branches of Moe’s Tavern and Krusty Burger.

Take the escalator to the park’s lower lot to hop on rides based on Revenge of the Mummy (where you’ll feel the G-forces on California’s fastest indoor rollercoaster) and Transformers (don your 3D glasses for stunningly authentic visual effects). Jurassic World—The Ride delivers Mesozoic-era fun with a “Raptor Encounter” with the beloved velociraptor Blue, an interactive “DinoPlay” area, and a Jurassic-themed bar and restaurant.

Look for digital signs in the park that highlight the current wait times for all rides, as well as the schedule for daily shows, and download the Universal Studios Hollywood Mobile App to help you strategize your day. The app helps you track wait times, pings you when your favorite ride reaches an ideal timeframe, reminds you about show times, and even leads you back to your parked car at the end of the day.

Want to skip the longest lines? Upgrade to a Universal Express ticket, which includes express access to each ride, attraction, and seated show. Or splurge on the VIP Experience and you’ll feel like a movie star yourself. First, there’s valet parking. Then make your way through a private entrance that leads to the VIP inner sanctum, where you relax with snacks and refreshments. Next, meet your expert guide, who will go out of his or her way to find out what kind of insider tips and movie facts intrigue you. Unlike the standard back-lot tour, the VIP Experience tour lets guests wander around sets, learn about lighting and camera angles, and see where current TV shows and movies are being shot. Pose for a selfie at the steps of Norman Bates’ house from Psycho, or wander through the Bravermans’ living room from the long-running TV series Parenthood. The tour includes a gourmet lunch prepared by the studio’s executive chef, as well as front-of-the-line privileges for all rides throughout the day.

No matter how you spend your day at Universal Studios, save time for Universal CityWalk. The park’s adjacent, neon-lit complex offers an array of stores and dining options, such as outposts Pink’s Famous Hot Dogs, Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville, and the first California branch of VooDoo Donuts, home of the ambrosial bacon-maple bar.

11 Tips for visiting Universal Studios Hollywood that will make your time a little easier and a lot of fun!

On our trip to California, Universal Studios Hollywood was hands down our favourite stop. This park is amazing. It’s so interesting to see how movies are made and see movie and TV sets from our favourite shows. The park also has some of the best rides we were on during our trip…it’s a fantastic place and we can’t wait to go back.

How to visit universal studios hollywood

The first attraction we visited was Despicable Me, and it was a perfect introduction to the park. It is awesome! We laughed from the second we entered the house until we left. Seriously so funny, we had to go twice!

How to visit universal studios hollywood

Which brings me to this…the great thing about Universal Studios is that it’s fun for everyone of all ages. There is something for everyone…from adults to teens to littles, there’s something.

How to visit universal studios hollywood

The biggest thing we know is that the line ups are worth the wait…because when you get a family picture like the one below (we’re in the second row from the bottom), it’s worth every second. I mean, just look at my little guy in the middle hahaha!

We loved our time at Universal Studios Hollywood so much, we’re sharing some tips for making the most of your own visit to this amazing park!

11 Tips For Visiting Universal Studios Hollywood

There is a lot to do and see at Universal Studios, and because we only had one day to visit, we had to maximize our time. But we came prepared (see tips below) and enjoyed our day very much.

Buy Entrance Passes Online

If you don’t want to wait in line to buy entrance passes, consider buying them online ahead of time. This is a huge timesaver…you don’t want to start your day in an entrance line.

Be prepared.

Take a backpack and pack it with sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat and a sweater in case the weather changes. Wear comfortable shoes because you’ll be doing A LOT of walking. Make sure to drink a lot of water. And don’t forget your camera, and have your phone fully charged.

Get a park map as soon as you enter.

As soon as you enter the park, make sure you grab a park map so you can plan out your visit, we referred to our endlessly. Or download the app (see tip below).

Arrive early.

Arrive to the park early so you can get to the most popular attractions before they get too busy. The busiest attractions were Jurassic Park, Transformers, The Mummy, The Simpsons and I’m sure the new Harry Potter and Walking Dead exhibits are now too!

There are food and drink restrictions when entering the park.

You can bring in some food and drink items into the park (things like bottled water, baby formula, small snacks). For a full listing refer to their website here.

Buy a reusable drinking container.

You can buy a reusable drinking container at kiosks in the park for around $12, and refills are free all day (you can all share it too – we just refilled it and shared it amongst the 5 of us)! It’s cheaper than buying $6 disposable water bottles every hour for all of us! And they make great souvenirs.

A peek at the site tour

Take the Site Tour!

This is a must. You will see and learn so much about the park…this tour was a favourite with our family. You’ll see so many familiar buildings and sets from movies and TV shows.

Be prepared for line ups.

This is a big one. You are going to stand in line, it’s just the way it is. The line ups to the popular attractions were huge. Huge. BUT, I do have to say that they were managed really well. Sometimes we were waiting for over an hour (close to 2 for some), but they seemed fast. In most of the line ups there are kiosks to buy food and snacks (even beer!), often there are activities and entertainment to keep you occupied. And if it’s a hot day, there are misters to help keep you cool while you wait. Line ups are no fun to wait in, but honestly Universal Studios managed them the best I have ever seen.

Download the app.

Download the Official Universal Studios Hollywood App. With the app you can track wait times for all attractions and shows, it will send you alerts when a line time reaches the time you want, you can set reminders for start times of shows, use the park map, create an itinerary for your visit and more!

Consider ‘Front of the Line’ passes

If you want to skip most of the lines and get to the front of the line, you can purchase ‘Front of the Line’ passes for an extra $100/person. Yikes. We didn’t do this and even though the lines were long, we still wouldn’t buy them.

Start early and stay until the park closes.

You can see the whole park in one day, but get there early and stay until it closes. It’s a long day, but it is worth it!

How to visit universal studios hollywood

Oh, we have to share one more tip as a bonus…make sure you get one of the Homer donuts from the Springfield attraction! Deeeelicious.

How to visit universal studios hollywood

It wasn’t that long ago that you could find everything you needed know about Universal Studios Hollywood on just one web page. People who visited back then often think they’ve seen it all and don’t need to go back again. They would be wrong.

Over the past few years, Universal has produced some of the most exciting theme park experiences in California. It takes several pages just to cover everything you can see and do there, and if you haven’t visited lately, it’s time to think about going back.

Is Universal Studios Hollywood Right for You?

Universal wows its visitors with innovative, thrilling rides, but it’s not for everyone. If you enjoy (and can tolerate) fast-paced thrill rides and don’t mind if they’re the motion simulator type, you’ll probably love it.

If you have physical issues that prevent you from going on fast rides – or if you prefer your rides slow and steady, you may not find enough to do to justify the cost of a ticket. Small people (less than 40 inches tall) and big people (whose body shape may prevent safety restraints from fastening) may also discover that they can only go on a limited number of rides.

To find out more about what the park is like, and to see it all -without leaving your chair, check out the Universal Studios slideshow.

Universal Studios Hollywood Planner

These resources are everything you need to get started planning your Universal Studios experience. Allow a full day, and you can enjoy everything they have to offer.

  • Universal Studios Complete Ride Guide: Detailed descriptions and tips for every ride and attraction, with height and size restrictions.
  • How to Get Universal Studios Tickets: The box office is the worst way to go. Find out how to get them ahead of time, how to get a discount – and learn about a ticketing loophole that could save you money.
  • What’s New – and What’s Coming – at Universal Studios Hollywood: Not only what’s next, but what’s been done in the past few years.
  • Tips for a Perfect Day at Universal: You’ll have more fun, stress less, and amaze your companions with how much you know if you follow even half of these tips.
  • Hotels Near Universal Studios: You can do Universal in a day, but you might be too tired to drive home afterward – or you may want to visit other attractions in the area. This guide highlights some of the nicest places to stay nearby.

When to Go to Universal Studios Hollywood

Universal is crowded during summer and long school holidays like spring and winter break. They get even crazier around Christmas when you may encounter the longest lines of the year.

In the summer, it gets really hot at midday, but the hours are longer. You’ll have few worries about getting rained out during California’s rainy winter season because most of the fun rides are indoors.

Annual Events at Universal Studios Hollywood

Halloween Horror Nights: Every October, Universal puts on a special event, featuring some of their scariest slasher villains. Even the “chainsaw guys” who go around terrorizing people have to try out for their jobs. You’ll have to buy a separate ticket or an all-day package to enjoy the park and this bloody scare-fest on the same day.

Harry Potter Christmas and Grinchmas: The Grinch stole Christmas, but then he brought it back – and it’s a good thing he did because the holiday celebration at Wizarding World is excellent. You don’t need a separate ticket for these.

What’s Nearby

Universal CityWalk, just outside the park entrance is a lively shopping and dining complex open to the public. It’s a good place to eat dinner or to do a little shopping, or even go to a movie after a day at Universal Studios Hollywood.

If the Universal studio tour got you interested in how movies are made, Warner Bros Studios is just up the street, and they have a great public tour.

The Metro Red Line also stops near the park, and you can catch a shuttle bus from there to the entrance. The Metro system covers much of the LA area. Find out more information about the Metro Red Line here.

Universal offers a shuttle from lots of Los Angeles hotels with a one-day admission ticket. Get details on their website.

Some tour companies offer admission and transportation packages from San Diego. They can cost as much as $40 per person over full ticket price with no chance for discounts, and they limit your time at the park. Consider this option only if you have no others.

My Universal Studios Hollywood tips offer ideas to have a great time and might even give you ideas to stretch your vacation fun further.

Get the Most Out of Universal Studios Hollywood Vacation

You have to know that Universal Studios Hollywood is a bit of a tourist trap. It doesn’t mean you can’t have a great time on your vacation. Just expect to see others in the area vacationing as well!

Also, it’s a little more expensive on property, be it the CityWalk property or Universal Studios as they cater to vacation goers and guests. So you might need more cash than you originally expected for your vacation.

Don’t worry though. If you consider our tips, figure out ways to cut extra expenses by planning and stick to a schedule (even if it’s a simple itinerary you can save cash.) Many people love this theme park and have spent countless hours riding the attractions.

Here are some tips on how to maximize your Universal Studios Vacation:

  1. Get tickets in advance. The lines can be long, and it’s not always worth it to wait in line for hours just to get in the park. Plus, you might find better deals if you start to look for tickets when you plan your vacation. Tickets go on sale several weeks in advance, so start planning your trip early!
  2. Plan the ride times as best as you can. Yes, they’re fun, but they also take up a lot of time and energy. Make sure the minute to arrive you head to the ride you want to go on the most first. During down times explore the various themed areas of the park. This will offer a relaxing change of pace while still appreciating all the theme park. Remember there’s plenty to see and do!
  3. Stick to daytime hours for the Universal Studio rides. The evenings can be quite busy, especially during the summer. In fact, if you can, try to visit during the day when it’s less crowded. If not, then check out the attendance crowd calendars online for the best times. Coming a little early OR during a certain time of the day could bring you more rides!
  4. Use the Universal Studios Hollywood Apps and guides for help when you arrive. There are plenty of employees who can help you find your way around the park, but if you can cut down time by knowing where you are going (or almost knowing) it saves time waiting for directions.
  5. Take advantage of the park’s lineless system: the Fast pass. This feature lets you reserve rides in advance on selected attractions. Fast Pass tickets are good for one hour from the time of purchase. You can also get a selection of Fast Pass options at the park’s kiosks. If you don’t have time, this is your best option!
  6. Be aware of which rides are closing before the park closes. Universal Studios Hollywood typically closes down its major attractions 45 minutes before their scheduled close time. Make sure you know what attractions will be closing early in order to plan ahead and avoid disappointing moments/
  7. Pack snacks and drinks. Of course, the park has multiple food stands and drink options. And you might really want to check those out. Yet it’s always a good idea to bring along snacks and drinks in case the lines get too long or you get hungry. Then, once you have a break, go to the places you’d like to eat at.
  8. Make use of Universal Studios Hollywood’s photo opportunities. Pictures are worth a thousand words! Having access to different photo spots is a great way to remember your trip.
  9. Always use common sense when visiting the park. Stay out of areas marked off and make sure you keep your wallet in the front pocket. There are dozens of cameras in the theme park, but even so crime can happen.
  10. Stay hydrated while visiting Universal Studios Hollywood. Depending on the time of year it can be very hot and could be even humid at the theme park. Bring plenty of water, and drink water regularly throughout your visit.

If you are looking to have fun on your next vacation, Universal Studios Hollywood is a perfect place to take the family. Offering amazing rides, fun themed areas and even some amazing food, you will be swept away from everyday life and transported into fun! It’s a wonderful way to make family vacation memories too!

Opening hours

The Universal Studios Hollywood opens at 9 am every day of the year.

However, its closing time varies seasonally, from 6 pm in winters to 11 pm during peak summer.

The park remains open on Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve as well.

Note: This Los Angeles attraction gets the maximum crowd on days when it is open for longer.

Best time to visit Universal Studios Hollywood

The best time to visit Universal Studios Hollywood is 15 minutes before they open for the day so that you are ahead in the line and can get a good spot for the most popular rides.

If you are driving to the park, arrive at least half an hour early to park your car and reach the attraction’s entrance.

If you want to avoid the crowd, it is best to visit Universal Studios during weekdays, school days, and off-season (mostly winter).

Since the rides run all through the day, but the shows do not, it’s best to schedule your day around the show timings.

Official show schedules and wait times are displayed around the park and on the park’s mobile app (Android / iOS).

How long does Universal Studios Hollywood take?

Visitors who don’t want to miss anything start early and end up spending the whole day at Universal Studios.

Visitors who pace themselves well can even spend up to eight hours exploring Universal Studios.

If you don’t have a lot of time on your hands, get the Universal Express ticket, which helps skip the queues at the rides and finish faster.

Universal Studios has two parts. The larger section is called Upper Lot and has attractions such as Wizarding World of Harry Potter, Springfield Hollywood, etc., and the smaller Lower Lot consists of adventurous rides.

To save time, avoid moving between these two sections – finish everything in one before moving to the next.

It is better to visit the Lower Lot first because the lines are shortest there in the morning. The crowd at the Lower Lot peaks by afternoon.

Tip: Universal Studios Hollywood Studio Tour is a 60-minute ride in a tram to see actual filming sets of movies and TV serials. Board the tram during non-peak times (late morning, afternoon or early evening) because the ride’s waiting time varies by day and season.

Universal Studios Hollywood prices

Universal Studios Hollywood’s General Admission ticket costs between $110 and $125 per adult or $104 and $119 per child when purchased in advance.

All visitors ten years and above must purchase an adult ticket.

Weekends, holidays, and most July and early August have high prices, while weekdays and off-season have lower ticket prices.

The Express Ticket, which gets you express access to all rides, shows, and attractions, is priced at $189 on regular days and $259 on peak days.

Both the General Admission ticket and Express Ticket cost more at the gates.

Universal Studios Hollywood discount tickets

The best way to get a discount on Universal Studios Hollywood tickets is by booking them online, in advance.

The General Admission ticket price at the gate is $139 for all visitors aged ten years and above and $133 for visitors between three to nine years.

The same tickets, when purchased online, are priced at $110 and $104, respectively, so you get a discount of up to $29 per ticket on select dates.

Buy General Admission tickets online to claim the reduced prices.

Universal Hollywood Express Pass costs $269 for all visitors aged three years and above at the gate.

But when you buy them online, you pay a discounted rate of $189 per person, thus saving $80 per person on select days.

Kids under three years get the best discount at Universal Studios – they can enter for free throughout the year.

If you are on a budget holiday, find out how to get Universal Studios Hollywood discount tickets.

Universal Studios Hollywood for free

If you are in Los Angeles for more than a week, Go Los Angeles All-Inclusive Pass is a great way to save money.

With this pass, you get free entry to more than 40 top attractions in the city.

It is available for 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, or 7 days and when you opt for a 3, 5, or 7-day pass, you get a free ticket to Universal Studios Hollywood, valid for any day.

Universal Studios Hollywood tickets

It is better to purchase your Universal Studios Hollywood tickets in advance since they are much more expensive at the attraction’s entrance.

Depending on when you are visiting, online tickets can be more than $30 cheaper than the ticket counter’s price.

Online Universal Studios also help you save a lot of waiting time at the ticket counters, especially during the summer months, which is the peak tourist season.

In this section, we explain the four types of Universal Studios Hollywood tickets.

General Admission Ticket

How to visit universal studios hollywood

Universal Studios Hollywood’s General Admission ticket is the cheapest way to get inside the theme park, which is why it is also the most popular ticket.

Besides access to all the rides, shows, and attractions at the park, this ticket also includes the behind-the-scenes Universal Studios Tour.

Price for 1-day ticket

Adult ticket (10+ years): US$ 110
Child ticket (3 to 9 years): US$ 104

*On peak days, the ticket price can go up to US$ 125 for 10+ year old visitors.

How to visit universal studios hollywood

One of the most popular attractions at Universal Studios Hollywood is the Bates Motel. The facade of the Bates Motel has stood on the backlot of Universal Studios since the film Psycho began filming in 1959.

While it’s been relocated to a different area within the backlot and expanded due to popularity it’s still a ‘must-see’ when visiting Universal Studios Hollywood.

You can visit the Bates Motel Universal Studios Hollywood on the backlot tour (also known as the Studio Tour) which is available to general admission guests as well as Universal Studios VIPs.

How to visit universal studios hollywood

The backlot tour is located in the lower lot of the park. To get here you’ll want to take the multiple escalators down from the upper lot in which you will arrive when entering the park.

How to visit universal studios hollywood

How to visit universal studios hollywood

The backlot tour lasts between 40 and 60 minutes depending on the ongoing attractions, filming and wait times during the tour.

The attraction is suitable for all ages, although younger guests may find this particular section of the backlot tour scary.

If you’re worried your little travellers might get scared then try sitting at the front of the tour rather than the back as when “Norman” comes towards you he heads to the back rather than the front.

You can use the Universal Studios mobile application or check any of the screens around the park to find out the wait time for the backlot tour at any given time.

Nearby the Studio Directory you should also be able to see a map or directions overhead that should direct you as to how to get to the lower lot where the backlot tour is located.

Aside from the Bates Motel, you’ll also see facades from popular shows such as The Good Place & Desperate Housewives.

This is a real, live, working set so you may see some celebrities or pass filming for a TV show or upcoming blockbuster – although I’ve been on the ride a number of times and I’m still yet to see that happen (although I did catch Mario Lopez filming an advert at the front of the park once).

During the Studio Tour, there are also two different 3D showings. You’ll be able to pick up your 3D glasses near the end of the queue for the ride (don’t forget to drop them off again in the buckets provided at the end).

Be sure to get in the mood to see Bates Motel Universal Studios by watching the fantastic film that is Physco in advance.

How to visit universal studios hollywood

Universal Studios offers visitors rides through their favorite Universal Studios movies. With our favorite tips, you’ll be navigating the park like a pro and enjoying the best of Universal Studios Hollywood.В

Six Top Universal Studios Hollywood Tips and Tricks 2022

How to visit universal studios hollywood

It’s true, Universal Studios Hollywood can get crowded, and lines start to form for everyone’s favorite rides. Our tips will help you avoid and manage lines and make the most of your day at the park.В

1. Buy Tickets in Advance

You’ll save time and money if you buy your tickets before arriving at the park. If you are worried about lines, consider upgrading to a Universal Express ticket, including Express access to rides, shows, and attractions.В

2. Arrive Early

Make sure you account for your area’s traffic and plan on arriving as soon as Universal opens. To ensure you reach the gate as soon as the park opens, plan at least 30 extra minutes for traffic and 30 extra minutes to park and get through security. The park begins to get crowded one to two hours after opening time.В

3. Plan Around Crowds

How to visit universal studios hollywood

Summer, weekends, and holidays are the busiest times to visit Universal Studios. If you can visit during spring, fall, or winter, you’ll enjoy fewer crowds. Crowds also increase anytime that kids are out of school.

The Forbidden Journey, Secret Life of Pets, Despicable Me, and The Simpsons are the most popular rides. Their location near the front of the park means they’ll get crowded quickly. Try and do as many of these rides as possible before the park gets crowded, or wait until the end of the day.В

The Lower Lot attractions are quiet before lunch. If Transformers, Revenge of the Mummy, and Jurassic World are your priorities, go straight to the Lower Lot, and you won’t have long wait times.В

Try The Three Broomsticks for an early lunch or an early dinner. The Three Broomsticks offers Universal’s tastiest food in an iconic Harry Potter setting.В

4. Use Single Rider

If you’re OK with riding separately from your party, the Single Rider option will save you a lot of time waiting in line. Single Rider is available in Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey, Revenge of the Mummy, Transformers, and Jurassic World.В

5. Don’t Miss the Studio Tour

How to visit universal studios hollywood

The Studio Tour is always the highlight of a Universal Studios visit and shouldn’t be missed. The tour takes visitors to the Back Lot, where movie and TV show backdrops are stored. For example, you can see the town square from “Back to the Future” and the Bates Motel from Alfred Hitchcock’s famous thriller. The tour takes about an hour and is an ideal break from walking. It’s best to do the tour in the afternoon when lines for other attractions are long.В

6. Take a Break

It might be too tiring to stay active from opening to closing if it’s hot out or you have young kids. Stay at a Los Angeles hotel with parking, and drive back for a quick nap.В

If you want to stay in the park, Kung Fu Panda and the Special Effects Show both have air conditioning so you can cool off. The Wet Zone area in Super Silly Fun Land has 80 water play features for kids and shaded areas for parents.В

Enjoy the Magic in Hollywood

Universal Studios offers the perfect mix of excitement and surprises. After your day at the park, experience the top Hollywood photo spots and enjoy real-life Hollywood glamor.

Universal Studios has two theme parks in the United States – Universal Studios Hollywood and the Universal Orlando Resort, which is home to both Universal Studios Florida and Universal’s Islands of Adventure. These parks transport visitors to their favorite movies and television shows with rides and shows that range from thrilling roller coasters to 3-D movies. The best way to visit these parks is by taking advantage of the many packages and deals available to visitors for everything from accommodations to front of the line access to attractions.

Accommodations

At Universal Studios Orlando, visitors can stay at one of the three hotels located on site. The Loews Portofino Bay Hotel, Loews Royal Pacific Resort and Hard Rock Hotel are all located within walking distance of CityWalk and both theme parks in the resort. Hotel guests also have access to a water taxi. A package deals offer discounted park tickets and even have the option of adding a daily buffet breakfast. Resort guests also get complimentary Universal Express passes which allow them to skip the regular lines for many attractions.

Guests to Universal Studios Hollywood can obtain hotel and ticket packages with reservations at several nearby resorts including the Sheraton Universal Hotel, Marriott Burbank Airport, the Beverly Garland Holiday Inn, Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel and W Hollywood. For the most convenient park access, the Hilton Universal City is located within walking distance of the park.

Tickets

To get the best deal on Universal Studios tickets, take advantage of one of the many package options available. Visitors to the Orlando park can add tickets to Wet ‘n Wild to their purchase for a discounted price. Tickets to Universal Studios Hollywood are available in packages along with tickets to Disneyland, Sea World San Diego, the San Diego Zoo or the San Diego Zoo’s Wild Animal Park. Visitors who come to the parks often may want to consider an annual pass. These can be paid for in small monthly installments over the course of the year.

Dining

Planning to stay at Universal Studios all day, purchasing a dining plan can provide great savings. At Universal Studios Hollywood, the All You Can Eat Pass provides unlimited trips to any of the five participating restaurants in the park. Guests get one free entree with each trip through the line at the restaurant. At the Universal Orlando Resort, the Universal Meal Deal provides a similar experience. Here, guests can get one entree and one dessert with each trip through the line at participating restaurants. A refillable mug can be added to the Universal Meal Deal for unlimited soft drinks as well.

Time Frame

As with any theme park, the prime visiting times take place during the summer and over the holidays, when kids are out of school. January through May and September through November are much less busy. At the Universal Orlando Resort, guests can also enjoy special events if they plan their vacation accordingly. The Summer Concert Series takes place during the summer, followed by Rock the Universe, a Christian Rock concert series in the fall. Halloween Horror Nights take over the parks during the evenings in October, and Grinchmas and the Macy’s Holiday Parade take place in winter.

Attraction Lines

Long lines for attractions and shows are the most frustrating part of a theme park vacation. At the Universal Studios parks, there’s a simple solution to this problem. The Front of the Line Pass allows guests to bypass regular lines. At the Universal Orlando Resort, this pass is good for most attractions at Universal Studios Florida and Universal’s Islands of Adventure. At Universal Studios Hollywood, this pass is good for all rides, attractions and shows and includes behind-the-scenes access to T2:3D, Universal’s Animal Actors and WaterWorld.

How to visit universal studios hollywoodWhen is Universal Studios Hollywood least crowded?

Known as “The Entertainment Capital of L.A.,” Universal Studios Hollywood is the very first Universal Studios theme park and is located less than an hour from Disneyland. The park is still a working movie studio, and features many rides, shows, and attractions from the big screen.

Universal Studios attracts millions of visitors each year, making it one of the most popular destinations in all of Southern California, but when is the best time to go? Let’s take a look at what kind of crowds to expect throughout the year.

January

New Year’s Day – The holiday season crowds are still around for the first week of the New Year. The off season (and shorter lines) doesn’t usually begin until after the first weekend of the month.

MLK Weekend – Weekdays and weekends after the first week of January are traditionally manageable, but it does get busier for MLK Weekend. Plan on that Saturday, Sunday, and Monday (MLK Day) to be crowded.

February

Presidents Day Weekend – The off season continues into February, with light crowds on weekdays and manageable weekends. Presidents Day Weekend, however, attracts big crowds.

March – April

Spring Break – Aim for going early in March if you can. The Spring Break crowds start to pick up by the end of the month as schools get out of session, peaking on the week before Easter and the week of Easter.

Weekdays – Crowds aren’t too bad at Universal in most of May. Saturdays are still busy, but weekdays and Sundays tend to be manageable.

Memorial Day Weekend – The three-day weekend marks the start of the summer season as more schools get out of session. Plan on that Saturday, Sunday, and Monday to be crowded. The weekdays after Memorial Day are manageable.

Summer Season – For shorter wait times in June, try to go on weekdays early in the month. Weekends in all of June are crowded, and weekdays are packed as well by the last week of the month.

4th of July Weekend – Universal Studios is typically very crowded for the 4th of July. Try to arrive early.

The summer season is in full swing by July, and most days are very busy. Avoid the weekends if you can. Weekdays (Monday – Thursday) are your best bets for lighter crowds.

August

Summer Season – The summer season crowds are still out in early August, but start to die down on weekdays by the last two weeks of the month. Saturdays and Sundays are still crowded.

September

Labor Day Weekend – The summer crowds are back for the three-day weekend. Be prepared for that Saturday, Sunday, and Monday to be busy.

Weekdays – The summer season crowds are gone completely after Labor Day, with manageable weekdays. Saturdays are most crowded.

October

Halloween Horror Nights – The annual Halloween event is wildly popular and starts in late September through the first weekend of November. Shorter hours mean manageable crowds during the day, especially on weekdays. For lighter crowds on Halloween Horror Nights, go in September or early October. It traditionally gets very crowded on the last weeks of October around Halloween, especially on Saturdays.

Check out our updated Halloween Horror Nights: Best & Worst Dates to Go crowd guide, with our handpicked best and worst nights to visit HHN every year.

November

Veterans Day Weekend – Weekends in November are traditionally busy, including the holiday weekend. Crowds are usually light on weekdays.

Thanksgiving Weekend – Universal Studios gets crowds for the extended weekend starting on Thanksgiving Day through Sunday.

December

Grinchmas – Grinchmas takes over Universal for the holiday season in December. Expect weekends to be busy, while crowds are manageable on weekdays for most of the month. The holiday crowds peak at the end of December, so be prepared for some of the biggest crowds of the year on the week of Christmas (including Christmas Eve and Christmas Day) through the end of the year (New Year’s Eve).

LOS ANGELES — Starting Friday, visitors to Universal Studios Hollywood won’t need to show their proof of a COVID-19 vaccine or negative test to enter the Hollywood movie-themed theme park — nor will visitors be required to wear a face covering or mask once inside.

What You Need To Know

  • Visitors to Universal Studios Hollywood and Six Flags Magic Mountain will not need to show proof of a COVID-19 vaccine or provide a negative COVID-19 test before entry
  • Visitors to Universal Studios Hollywood and Six Flags will also not be required to wear a face-covering or mask once inside
  • The theme parks in LA County are following new county public health orders that recommend but not require pre-entry vaccine verification and masking
  • Since October, theme parks in LA County required visitors to show proof of vaccine or provide a negative COVID-19 test

After months of requiring visitors to wear masks and bring their vaccine documents, Universal Studios Hollywood dropped its face covering and proof of vaccine or pre-entry negative COVID-19 test to align with new guidance from the Los Angeles Department of Public Health.

“Beginning on Friday, March 4, and in accordance with government guidelines, guests will no longer be required to wear facial coverings or show proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test when visiting Universal Studios Hollywood,” a Universal Studios Hollywood spokesperson wrote in a statement to media. “Facial coverings continue to be strongly recommended while indoors.”

On Thursday, officials with the Los Angeles Department of Public Health relaxed many of its stringent masking and pre-entry proof of vaccination or negative COVID-19 test rules for indoor places, including bars, breweries, nightclubs, gyms, movie theaters and lounges. Health officials also only recommend but do not require outdoor mega-event operators such as theme parks, Dodger Stadium and other venues to have visitors show vaccination proof.

“After the post-winter surge, the county of Los Angeles continues to experience consistent decline in COVID-19 cases, test positivity rates and related hospitalizations,” the county health order states. “The consistency in the decline of these important metrics in the county and across the state allow for a significant revision of required community-level infection control strategies.”

Since October, theme parks in Los Angeles County, including Universal Studios Hollywood and Six Flags Magic Mountain, have consistently complied with county public health orders requiring visitors to show proof of vaccine or negative COVID-19 test before entry and mask up once inside.

In December, Universal Studios changed the age requirement for visitors to show proof of vaccination from 12 years and older to ages five and older.

The Hollywood theme park also partnered with a company to offer free rapid COVID-19 tests before entry.

Six Flags Magic Mountain in Valencia will also align with the county’s new order. The website states visitors will not need to show proof of vaccination status nor a negative COVID-19 test for entry.

Universal Studios Hollywood – additional information

Universal Studios Hollywood is a working movie studio and a theme park. First opened only as a studio in the early twentieth century, its popular tours lead to the building of attractions, which later developed into a full theme park. The rides and attractions at the park mostly are based on popular movies or television shows of the studio such as Jurassic Park, the Ride, Despicable Me, Minions, Mayhem and The Simpsons Ride. As well as this, the park still offers the original attraction of a studio tour, allowing guests to see where and how movies are filmed.

Over the last few years, the attendance at Universal Studios Hollywood has increased annually, reaching 9.15 million visitors in 2018 and 2019. Despite the consistent increase in attendance, the park still receives less visitors than its sister park Universal Studios Orlando which had 10.92 million guests in 2019. The Universal Parks brand has spread globally, and there is now also a Universal Studios in Japan and Singapore, with plans to build parks in other international locations such as China and Russia. The success of the brand has allowed Universal Studios to become the third largest amusement park chain in the world in terms of attendance, behind Walt Disney Attractions and Merlin Entertainments.

Among the tourist attractions in Los Angeles, California, the visit of Universal Studios in Hollywood belongs to one of the top places to go, where you can spend whole day laughing and discovering, how the movie industry works. Whether the price for day ticket is worth to pay and if there’s enough to do for the whole day, read in the post below.

How to visit universal studios hollywood

the entrance to the Universal City studios

If you have TV at home, then you’ll definitely know the most of the places seen in Universal Studios in Los Angeles. You can spent there at least one day, but there’s an option to buy multi tickets valid up to one year. Universal Studios are easy to reach from the city center and people of every age will surely find something to laugh at – I call it the laughing factory. The perfect time to visit Universal Studios is anytime during the whole year, since the weather in LA is most of the time fair so you don’t have to worry about being cold, neither hot.

HOW TO GET THERE

The most convenient way to get to the Universal Studios in Hollywood is to use red metro. Simply hop on the red train towards to ‘North Hollywood’ station and leave the train at the ‘Universal City’ station. From there, simply follow the crowd towards to the free shuttle bus – you won’t be the only one, who’s going there. This is highly visited attraction recommended by many people, who have been there, already. I personally didn’t want to go at first, but then I changed my mind, fortunately and I don’t regret it. The only reason, why I was unsure, whether to go or not, was the high price for the ticket, but luckily, I was convinced to go by many people, who’ve been there and enjoyed this attraction. I don’t like these ‘must to see’ lists that try to force you to visit all the points they state and if you miss just single one, they make you feel guilty and it’s like you haven’t even been there, but if I should write one about Los Angeles, the visit of the Universal Studios would be definitely mentioned.

the long queues

WHERE TO BUY TICKETS

Tickets are sold before the entrance or online, but try to manage to come early in the morning, since the queues for tickets are way too long and you can spend there up to one hour just standing and waiting. It drove me mad a little, since we’ve arrived around 11am and the studios are closing its doors at 6am (closure times vary according the time of the year) so I spent one hour of my precious time standing in the line. What a gross. Tickets can be paid off cash or by card at the place and you can decide what kind of ticket you want, whether day or two day pass, annual pass etc. For VIP ticket you must call beforehand. Standard day ticket cost $92. If you have travel agent IATA card, there’s a special stall, where you can get travel agent rate and have tickets with almost 40 % discount. The travel agents stall stands being the regular one, so you don’t have to wait in a long queue.

WHY TO COME

Even though, the entrance fee is pretty high, it is totally worth to pay, since there’s so much to do. One of the most popular attracion is the Studio Tour that takes around 80 minutes, where you’ll get behind the scenes of world’s famous TV shows. You will see the Wisteria lane – the street, where the Desperate Housewives live, you will see the famous Norman Bates’ hotel from the horror Psycho or the shark from famous horror movie. You’ll be flooded in the metro station or your car will drown into the lake. One of the parts of this attraction is the visit of world’s largest 3D cinema or small replica of New York city, where the most of NYC scenes are shot. Except of the studio tour you can visit Simpsons, Transformes, the temple of Mummy or Jurassic Park.

The visit of Universal Studios in Hollywood is totally worth its price and I’d definitely paid the ticket again, if I went there again. My day in Universal Studios was full of fun, I laughed a lot and really enjoyed the time there. I’ve seen many places of my favorite TV series and movies and figured out, how the special effects are made before the movies go public. If you’re not sure, whether to pay those $ 92, go ahead, visit the Universal Studios in Los Angeles, pay it and have fun. You won’t regret it.

1. The new Jurassic World ride is open! Finally!

How to visit universal studios hollywood

Jurassic World – The Ride is now open and as they say, “It just got real!” Inspired by the Jurassic World movies, this totally reimagined and redesigned ride is sure to delight and scare the pants off you and your whole family. More dinosaurs, more magic, more screams – still the same splash at the end! You WILL get wet on this ride – and in the Summer, that’s great!

2. New Raptor Encounter w/ Blue and Baby Raptor

How to visit universal studios hollywood

Have you ever met a Velociraptor up close? Well, you’ll get your chance at the park’s brand new “Raptor Encounter.” Blue, one of the most popular velociraptors from the blockbuster Jurassic World franchise (and I’m told a close personal friend of Chris Pratt) comes out to say hello and pose for pictures every 30 minutes, and the dudes assigned to handle her get to ham it up every time. Plus there’s a baby raptor that you can pet.

3. Delicious Food and drinks at the new Jurassic Cafe and Isla Nu-Bar

How to visit universal studios hollywood

There’s a new restaurant in town at Universal, and it’s serving Costa Rican-inspired cuisine. Plus the Isla Nu-Bar is serving Tiki Cocktails. The portions at the restaurant are huge, and the food I sampled was amazing. You get your money’s worth for sure.

4. Nighttime Lights Are Back and Darker than Ever – But Not For Long

The famous and delightful Nighttime Lights at Hogwarts Castle inside the Wizarding World of Harry Potter are back for a limited time. This Summer’s show is called Dark Arts at Hogwarts Castle, and plays nightly through August 11th. So hurry!

Pro Tip: pay the extra fee and get the Express Pass. It lets you cut to the front of the line on practically every ride and experience, and saves you from literally hours of standing in line.

5. Guy Diamond the Troll is here to Dance with You

Dreamworks’ Trolls return to the park as Guy Diamond joins Poppy and Branch for a Summer of glittery fun.

6. DreamWorks Theatre

How to visit universal studios hollywood

Visit the DreamWorks Theatre featuring “Kung Fu Panda: The Emperor’s Quest,” which opened in 2018. It’s a gorgeous new venue, with an immersive visual and motion experience, showcasing DreamWorks animation films in newly-created stories, designed especially and exclusively for this theater. The screen wraps around half of the room, and the theatre seating moves with the action. Bonus? It’s air-conditioned!

7. Dress up Like Hermione and Snape

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter has been one of the big draws at Universal Studios ever since it opened, and Butterbeer (the beverage) has been a big hit. Whether you’re interested in cold Butterbeer for the Summer, or Hot Butterbeer in the Winter, it’s all good.

9. New Wand Magic Inside Wizarding World of Harry Potter

How to visit universal studios hollywood

It must be said that we are Harry Potter fans here at MomsLA, so we love seeing Hogsmeade come to life at the Wizarding World. They’ve made it extra fun with the wand magic spots around the park, and now there are two new ones to try out: the Incendio fire-making spell and the Alohomora unlocking spell.

10. The park is a terrific Family Experience

How to visit universal studios hollywood

As if 1-9 weren’t enough reasons, the fact is that Universal Studios is not only a theme park, but is one of the oldest working studio lots in Hollywood. It’s where the magic gets made, and the tram ride takes you through a living history of American cinema.

Plus, there are misting fans placed all over the park so it’s less likely you’ll melt from the heat, and we didn’t even get to mention all the shows – wow! , There are a lot of reasons to take your family to Universal Studios Hollywood this Summer.

Metro Parking Lots

How to visit universal studios hollywood

If you plan to take or don’t mind taking one of the metro lines to the station near Universal City then you may find free parking available. Select metro stations have an ample amount of spaces free to use for the day.

Metro Line parking lots are strictly for customers only, so if you don’t plan to take the metro line then do not park in of the lots or you risk having you car towed.

If you had planned to drive straight to Universal Studios, the Metro Line might be worth taking a look especially if you have a lengthy drive. The Metro Line isn’t for everyone, but it might get you to Universal Studios Hollywood faster and cheaper than driving!

Vineland & Lankershim City Lot (Lot 747)

How to visit universal studios hollywood

The Vinland & Lankershim parking area managed by the county of Los Angeles is about a 30 minute walk from Universal Studios Hollywood. From 7AM-9PM you can park for free at this location for two hours.

If you exceed the two hour free limit you can park at Vineland & Lankershim for up to ten hours for only $2.50!

Outside of these hours there are no restrictions and you can park for free here. While it’s very late and a fair amount of walking, during Halloween Horror Nights you might find value in parking here.

Be sure to check posted signs for any updated prices, rules and restrictions as these can change at any time and always be careful when walking for an extended period at night. The area is generally safe, but you should never walk alone or if you feel uncomfortable.

We don’t recommend going about this way to get free parking at Universal Studios, but it certainly is an option if you can work around any restrictions.

TIP: Unless you’re planning to purchase an annual pass or the VIP Experience then you’re better off just paying for parking at Universal Studios Hollywood.
